وَعَنْAnd fromالْهَيْثَمِAl-Haythamبْنِson ofالْحَسَنِAl-Hasanبْنِson ofعُمَارَةَUmarahقَالَ:he said:
And from Al-Haytham ibn Al-Hasan ibn Umarah, he said:
قَدِمَCameشَيْخٌan old manمِنْfromخُزَاعَةَKhuza'ahأَيَّامَin the days ofالْمُخْتَارِAl-Mukhtarفَنَزَلَand he stayedعَلَىas a guest ofعَبْدِAbdالرَّحْمَنِAl-Rahmanبْنِson ofأَبْزَىAbzaالْخُزَاعِيِّ،Al-Khuza'i
An old man from Khuza'ah came during the days of Al-Mukhtar and stayed with Abd al-Rahman ibn Abza al-Khuza'i.
فَلَمَّاSo whenرَأَىhe sawمَاwhatتَصْنَعُdoشِيعَةُthe partisans ofالْمُخْتَارِAl-Mukhtarبِهِfor himمِنَofالْإِعْظَامِvenerationلَهُfor himجَعَلَhe beganيَقُولُ:saying:
So when he saw how the partisans of Al-Mukhtar venerated him, he began to say:
يَاOعِبَادَservants ofاللَّهِGodأَبِالْمُخْتَارِis it for Al-Mukhtarيُصْنَعُthat is doneهَذَا؟this?
"O servants of God, is this done for Al-Mukhtar?
وَاللَّهِBy GodلَقَدْindeedرَأَيْتُهُI saw himيَبِيعُsellingالْإِمَاءَslave girlsبِالْحِجَازِ!in the Hijaz!
By God, I have seen him selling slave girls in the Hijaz!"
فَبَلَغَSo that reachedذَلِكَthatالْمُخْتَارَAl-Mukhtarفَدَعَاand he calledبِهِfor himفَقَالَ:and said:
That reached Al-Mukhtar, so he summoned him and said:
مَاWhatهَذَاis thisالَّذِيthatيَبْلُغُنِيreaches meعَنْكَ؟about you?
"What is this that reaches me about you?"
قَالَ:He said:الْبَاطِلُ،Falsehood,فَأَمَرَso he orderedبِضَرْبِthe striking ofعُنُقِهِ،his neck,
He said, "It is falsehood." So he ordered his neck to be struck.
فَقَالَ:He said:لَاNoوَاللَّهِby Godلَاyou will notتَقْدِرُbe ableعَلَىto doذَلِكَ!that!
He said, "No, by God, you will not be able to do that!"
قَالَ:He said:وَلِمَ؟And why?
He said, "And why?"
قَالَ:He said:أَمَّاNotدُونَbeforeأَنْthatأَنْظُرَI lookإِلَيْكَat youوَقَدْwhenفَتَحْتَyou have conqueredمَدِينَةَthe city ofالدَّمَشْقِDamascusحَجَرًاstoneحَجَرًاby stoneوَقَتَلْتَand killedالْمُقَاتِلَةَthe fightersوَسَبَيْتَand capturedالذُّرِّيَّةَthe offspringثُمَّthenتَصْلُبُنِيyou crucify meعَلَىonشَجَرَةٍa treeعَلَىbyنَهْرٍ!a river!
He said, "Not until I look at you after you have conquered the city of Damascus stone by stone, killed the fighters, captured the offspring, and then crucified me on a tree by a river!"
وَاللَّهِBy Godإِنِّيindeed Iلَأَعْرِفُknowالشَّجَرَةَthe treeالسَّاعَةَat this very hourوَأَعْرِفُand I knowشَاطِئَthe bank ofذَلِكَthatالنَّهْرِ!river!
By God, I know the tree right now and I know the bank of that river!"
قَالَ:He said:فَالْتَفَتَSo turnedالْمُخْتَارُAl-Mukhtarإِلَىtoأَصْحَابِهِhis companionsفَقَالَand saidلَهُمْ:to them:
Al-Mukhtar turned to his companions and said to them:
أَمَّاIndeedإِنَّthatالرَّجُلَthe manقَدْhasعَرَفَknownالشَّجَرَةَ،the tree,
"Indeed, the man has known the tree."
فَحُبِسَSo he was imprisonedحَتَّىuntilإِذَاwhenكَانَit wasاللَّيْلُnightبَعَثَhe sentإِلَيْهِto himفَقَالَ:and said:
So he was imprisoned until night fell, when he sent for him and said:
يَاOأَخَاbrother ofخُزَاعَةَKhuza'ahوَمِزَاحٌand is it jokingعِنْدَatالْقِتَالِ!the time of fighting!
"O brother of Khuza'ah, is this joking at the time of fighting?"
فَقَالَ:He said:أَنْشُدُكَI implore you byاللَّهَGodأَنْthatأُقْتَلَI be killedضَيَاعًا!in vain!
He said, "I implore you by God not to let me be killed in vain!"
قَالَ:He said:وَمَاAnd whatتَطْلُبُdo you seekهَاhereهُنَا؟?
He said, "And what do you seek here?"
قَالَ:He said:أَرْبَعَةَfourآلافِthousandدِرْهَمٍdirhamsأَقْضِيwith which I settleبِهَاmyدَيْنِي.debt.
He said, "Four thousand dirhams with which I may settle my debt."
قَالَ:He said:ادْفَعُوهَاGive themإِلَيْهِto himوَإِيَّاكَand bewareأَنْthatتُصْبِحَyou see the morningبِالْكُوفَةِ،in Kufa,
He said, "Give them to him, and beware of being in Kufa by morning."
فَقَبَضَهَاSo he took themوَخَرَجَ.and left.
So he took them and left.
وَعَنْهُAnd from himقَالَ:he said:كَانَWasسُرَاقَةُSuraqahالْبَارِقِيُّAl-Bariqiمِنْamongظُرَفَاءِthe wits ofأَهْلِthe people ofالْمَدِينَةِMedina
And from him, he said: Suraqah al-Bariqi was among the wits of the people of Medina.
فَأَسَرَهُSo he was captured byرَجُلٌa manمِنْfromأَصْحَابِthe companions ofالْمُخْتَارِAl-Mukhtar
He was captured by a man from the companions of Al-Mukhtar.
فَأُتِيَAnd he was broughtبِهِwith himالْمُخْتَارَto Al-Mukhtarوَقَالَ:and he said:أَسَرْتُ"I capturedهَذَا،this one,"
He was brought to Al-Mukhtar, and the captor said, "I captured this one."
فَقَالَ:So he said:كَذَبْتَ"You liedوَاللَّهِby Godمَاdid notأَسَرَنِيcapture meهَذَاthis manإِنَّمَاratherأَسَرَنِيcaptured meرَجُلٌa manعَلَيْهِupon whom wereثِيَابٌclothesبِيضٌwhiteعَلَىuponفَرَسٍa horseأَبْلَقَ!piebald!
Suraqah said, "You lied, by God, this man did not capture me! Rather, I was captured by a man wearing white clothes on a piebald horse!"
فَقَالَSo saidالْمُخْتَارُ:Al-Mukhtar:أَمَّاIndeedإِنَّthatالرَّجُلَthe manقَدْhasعَايَنَ،witnessed [them],يَعْنِيmeaningالْمَلَائِكَةَ،the angels,خَلُّواreleaseسَبِيلَهُ،his path,
Al-Mukhtar said, "Indeed, the man has witnessed [them]"—meaning the angels—"Release his path."
فَلَمَّاSo whenأَفْلَتَhe escapedأَنْشَأَhe beganيَقُولُ:saying:
When he escaped, he began to say:
أَلَّاOأَبْلِغْconvey toأَبَاAbuإِسْحَاقَIshaqعَنِّيon my behalf......رَأَيْتُI sawالدُّهْمَthe dark horsesبُلْقًاas piebaldمُصْمَتَاتِsolidly marked
O convey to Abu Ishaq from me... I saw the dark horses as piebald and solidly marked.
أُرِيShowingعَيْنَيَّmy two eyesمَاwhatلَمْdid notتُبْصِرَاهُsee......كِلَانَاboth of usمُولَعٌare infatuatedبِالتَّرَهَّاتِwith nonsense
Showing my eyes what they did not see... Both of us are infatuated with nonsense.
كَفَرْتُI have renouncedبِدِينِكُمْyour religionوَجَعَلْتُand I have madeنَذْرًاa vow......عَلَيَّupon myselfقِتَالَكُمْto fight youحَتَّىuntilالْمَمَاتِdeath
I have renounced your religion and made a vow upon myself... to fight you until death.
وَعَنْهُAnd from himقَالَ:he said:خَرَجَWent outالْأَخْوَصُAl-Akhwasبْنُson ofجَعْفَرٍJa'farالْمَخْزُومِيُّAl-Makhzumiيَتَغَدَّىto have lunchفِيinدَيْرِthe monastery ofاللَّجِّAl-Laj
And from him, he said: Al-Akhwas ibn Ja'far al-Makhzumi went out to have lunch at the Monastery of Al-Laj,
وَذَلِكَand thatفِيwas inيَوْمٍa dayشَدِيدِof severeالْبَرْدِcoldوَمَعَهُand with him wereحَمْزَةُHamzahبْنُson ofبَيْضٍBaydوَسُرَاقَةُand Suraqahالْبَارِقِيُّ،Al-Bariqi,
and that was on a day of severe cold, and with him were Hamzah ibn Bayd and Suraqah al-Bariqi.
فَلَمَّاSo whenكَانَاthey wereعَلَىatظَهْرِthe outskirts ofالْكُوفَةِKufaوَعَلَيْهِand upon him wereالْوَبَرُfurوَالْخَزُّand silkوَعَلَيْهِمَاwhile upon the two of them wereأَطْمَارٌtattered clothes
When they were on the outskirts of Kufa, and he (Al-Akhwas) was wearing fur and silk while the other two were in tattered clothes,
قَالَsaidحَمْزَةُHamzahلِسُرَاقَةَ:to Suraqah:أَيْنَ"Whereيَذْهَبُis takingبِنَاusهَذَاthis manفِيinهَذَاthisالْبَرْدِcoldوَنَحْنُwhile weفِيare inأَطْمَارِنَا؟our tattered clothes?"
Hamzah said to Suraqah, "Where is this man taking us in this cold while we are in our tattered clothes?"
قَالَSaidسُرَاقَةُ:Suraqah:أَنَا"Iأَكْفِيكِيهِ.will suffice you against him."
Suraqah said, "I will manage him for you."
فَبَيْنَمَاSo whileهُوَheيَسِيرُwas travelingإِذْsuddenlyلَقِيَهُمْmet themرَاكِبٌa riderمُقْبِلٌcoming
As he was traveling, a coming rider suddenly met them.
فَحَرَّكَSo urgedسُرَاقَةُSuraqahدَابَّتَهُhis mountنَحْوَهُtoward himوَافَقَهُand conferred with himسَاعَةًfor a whileوَلَحِقَand rejoinedبِالْأَخْوَصِ،Al-Akhwas,
Suraqah urged his mount toward him, conferred with him for a while, and rejoined Al-Akhwas.
فَقَالَ:He said:مَا"Whatخَبَّرَكَdid inform you ofبِهِwith itالرَّاكِبُ؟the rider?"
Al-Akhwas asked, "What did the rider inform you of?"
قَالَ:He said:زَعَمَ"He claimsأَنَّthatخَوَارِجَKharijitesخَرَجَتْhave revoltedبِالْقُطْقُطَانَةِ،at Al-Qutqutanah,"
Suraqah said, "He claims that Kharijites have revolted at Al-Qutqutanah."
قَالَ:He said:بَعِيدٌ."That is far.
Al-Akhwas said, "That is unlikely."
قَالَ:He said:إِنَّIndeedالْخَوَارِجَthe Kharijitesتَسِيرُtravelفِيinلَيْلَةٍa nightثَلَاثِينَthirtyفَرْسَخًاfarsakhsوَأَكْثَرَ،or more,"
Suraqah said, "Indeed, the Kharijites travel thirty farsakhs or more in a single night."
وَكَانَAnd wasالْأَخْوَصُAl-Akhwasأَحَدَone ofالْجُبَنَاءِthe cowardsفَثَنَىso he turned backرَأْسَthe head ofدَابَّتِهِhis mountوَقَالَ:and said:
Al-Akhwas was one of the cowards, so he turned his mount around and said:
رُدُّوا"Returnطَعَامَنَاour foodنَتَغَدَّىlet us have lunchفِيatالْمَنْزِلِ،home."
"Let us take our food back and have lunch at home."
فَلَمَّاSo whenحَاذَىhe reachedمَنْزِلَهُhis houseقَالَhe saidلِأَصْحَابِهِ:to his companions:ادْخُلُوا،"Enter,"
When he reached his house, he said to his companions, "Enter."
وَمَضَىand he proceededإِلَىtoخَالِدِKhaledبْنِson ofعَبْدِAbdاللَّهِAllahالْقَسْرِيِّAl-Qasriفَقَالَ:and said:
He proceeded to Khalid ibn Abd Allah al-Qasri and said:
قَدْ"Hasخَرَجَتْrevoltedخَارِجَةٌa rebel groupبِالْقُطْقُطَانَةِ،at Al-Qutqutanah."
"A rebel group has revolted at Al-Qutqutanah!"
فَنَادَىSo called outخَالِدٌKhaledفِيinالْعَسْكَرِthe armyفَجَمَعَهُمْand gathered themوَوَجَّهَand dispatchedخَيْلًاcavalryتَرْكُضُgallopingنَحْوَtowardدَيْرِthe monastery ofاللَّجِّAl-Lajلِتَعْرِفَto ascertainالْخَبَرَ،the news,
Khaled called out to the army, gathered them, and dispatched cavalry galloping toward the Monastery of Al-Laj to ascertain the news.
فَانْصَرَفُواSo they returnedوَأَعْلَمُوهُand informed himأَنَّهُthatلَاnoأَصْلَbasisلِلْخَبَرِ،for the news exists,
They returned and informed him that there was no basis for the news.
فَقَالَSo he saidلِلْأَخْوَصِ:to Al-Akhwas:مَنْ"Whoأَعْلَمَكَinformed you ofهَذَا؟this?"
He said to Al-Akhwas, "Who informed you of this?"
قَالَ:He said:سُرَاقَةُ،"Suraqah."
He said, "Suraqah."
قَالَ:He said:وَأَيْنَ"And whereهُوَ؟is he?"
He said, "And where is he?"
قَالَ:He said:فِي"Inمَنْزِلِي،my house."
He said, "In my house."
فَأَرْسَلَSo he sentإِلَيْهِfor himمَنْsomeone whoأَتَاهُbrought himبِهِto himفَقَالَ:and said:
He sent someone to bring him, and when he came, he said:
أَنْتَ"Did youأَخْبَرْتَهُinform himعَنِaboutالْخَارِجَةِ؟the rebel group?"
"Did you inform him about the rebel group?"
قَالَ:He said:مَا"I did notفَعَلْتُdo soأَصْلَحَmay God rectifyاللَّهُGodالْأَمِيرَ،the commander,"
He said, "I did not do so, may God rectify the commander."
فَقَالَSo saidلَهُto himالْأَخْوَصُ:Al-Akhwas:أَوَتُكَذِّبُنِي"Do you call me a liarبَيْنَbeforeيَدَيِthe hands ofالْأَمِيرِ؟the commander?"
Al-Akhwas said to him, "Do you call me a liar in the presence of the commander?"
قَالَSaidخَالِدٌ:Khaled:وَيْحَكَ"Woe to youاصْدُقْنِي!tell me the truth!"
Khaled said, "Woe to you, tell me the truth!"
قَالَ:He said:نَعَمْ،"Yes,أَخْرَجَنَاhe took us outفِيinهَذَاthisالْبَرْدِcoldوَقَدْwhileظَاهَرَhe woreالْخَزَّsilkوَالْوَبَرَand furوَنَحْنُwhile weفِيare inأَطْمَارِنَاthese tattered clothes of oursهَذِهِtheseفَأَحْبَبْتُso I likedأَنْtoأَرُدَّهُ،turn him back,"
He said, "Yes. He took us out in this cold while he was wearing layers of silk and fur, and we were in these tattered clothes of ours, so I wanted to turn him back."
فَقَالَSo saidلَهُto himخَالِدٌ:Khaled:وَيْحَكَ"Woe to youوَهَذَاand is thisمِمَّاsomething thatيُتَلَاعَبُis jokedبِهِ؟!لِwith?!"
Khaled said to him, "Woe to you, is this something to joke about?!"
وَكَانَAnd wasسُرَاقَةُSuraqahظَرِيفًاwittyشَاعِرًاa poetوَهُوَand heالَّذِيwhoيَقُولُ:says:
Suraqah was witty and a poet, and he is the one who says:
قَالُواThey saidسُرَاقَةُSuraqahعَنِّينٌis impotentفَقُلْتُso I saidلَهُمْ:to them:......اللَّهُGodيَعْلَمُknowsأَنِّيthat Iغَيْرُam notعَنِّينِimpotent
They said Suraqah is impotent, so I said to them:... God knows that I am not impotent.
فَإِنْSo ifظَنَنْتُمْyou thinkبِيof meالشَّيْءَthe thingالَّذِيthatزَعَمُواthey claimed......فَقَرِّبُونِيthen bring me closeمِنْtoبِنْتِthe daughter ofابْنِthe son ofيَامِينَYamin
So if you think of me the thing that they claimed... then bring me close to the daughter of the son of Yamin.
وَذَكَرُواAnd they mentionedأَنَّthatشَبِيبَShabibبْنَson ofيَزِيدَYazidالْخَارِجِيَّthe Kharijiteمَرَّpassed byبِغُلَامٍa boyمُسْتَنْقِعٍstanding inفِيwater ofمَاءِthe water ofالْفُرَاتِthe Euphratesفَقَالَand saidلَهُ:to him:
They mentioned that Shabib ibn Yazid al-Kharijite passed by a boy standing in the water of the Euphrates and said to him:
يَا"Oغُلَامُboyاخْرُجْcome outإِلَيَّto meأُسَائِلْكَ،so I may question you."
"O boy, come out to me so I may question you."
فَعَرَفَهُSo he recognized himالْغُلَامُ،the boy,فَقَالَ:and said:إِنِّي"Indeed Iأَخَافُ،fear,
The boy recognized him and said, "I am afraid."
أَفَآمِنٌ"Will I be safeأَنَاIإِنْifخَرَجْتُI come outحَتَّىuntilأَلْبَسَI wearثِيَابِي؟my clothes?"
"Will I be safe if I come out, until I put on my clothes?"
قَالَ:He said:نَعَمْ،"Yes."
He said, "Yes."
فَخَرَجَSo he came outوَقَالَ:and said:وَاللَّهِ"By GodلَاI do notأَلْبَسُهَاwear themالْيَوْمَ،today,"
So he came out and said, "By God, I will not wear them today!"
فَضَحِكَSo laughedشَبِيبٌShabibوَقَالَ:and said:خَدَعَنِي"He has deceived meوَرَبِّby the Lord ofالْكَعْبَةِ!the Kaaba!"
Shabib laughed and said, "He has deceived me, by the Lord of the Kaaba!"
وَوَكَّلَAnd he appointedبِهِover himرَجُلًاa manمِنْfromأَصْحَابِهِhis companionsيَحْفَظُهُto guard himأَلَّاso thatيُصِيبَهُmight touch himأَحَدٌanyoneمِنْfromأَصْحَابِهِhis companionsبِمَكْرُوهٍ.with any harm.
And he appointed a man from his companions to guard him so that none of his companions would harm him.
قَالَ:He said:وَكَانَAnd wasرَجُلٌa manمِنَamongالْخَوَارِجِthe Kharijitesقَالَwho saidفِيinقَصِيدَةٍa poemلَهُ:of his:
He said: A man from the Kharijites said in a poem of his:
وَمِنَّاAnd among usيَزِيدُare Yazidوَالْبَطِينُand Al-Batinوَقَعْنَبُand Qanab
And among us are Yazid, Al-Batin, and Qanab,
وَمِنَّاand among usأَمِيرُis the commander ofالْمُؤْمِنِينَthe faithfulشَبِيبُShabib
And among us is the Commander of the Faithful, Shabib.
فَسَارَSo traveledالْبَيْتُthe verseحَتَّىuntilسَمِعَهُheard itعَبْدُAbdالْمَلِكِAl-Malikبْنُson ofمَرْوَانَMarwanفَأَمَرَso he orderedبِطَلَبِthe search forقَائِلِهِ،its reciter,
The verse spread until Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan heard it, so he ordered that its author be sought.
فَأُتِيَSo he was broughtبِهِ،to him,فَلَمَّاand whenوَقَفَhe stoodبَيْنَbeforeيَدَيْهِhimقَالَ:he said:
He was brought to him, and when he stood before him, he said:
أَنْتَ"Are youالْقَائِلُ:the one who said:وَمِنَّاAnd among us isأَمِيرُthe commander ofالْمُؤْمِنِينَthe faithfulشَبِيبٌ؟Shabib?"
"Are you the one who said, 'And among us is the Commander of the Faithful, Shabib'?"
قَالَ:He said:لَمْ"I did notأَقُلْsayهَكَذَاthusيَاOأَمِيرَcommander ofالْمُؤْمِنِينَ،the faithful,"
He said, "I did not say it thus, O Commander of the Faithful."
قَالَ:He said:فَكَيْفَ"Then howقُلْتَ؟did you say it?"
He said, "Then how did you say it?"
قَالَ:He said:قُلْتُ"I saidوَمِنَّاAnd among usأَمِيرَas the commander ofالْمُؤْمِنِينَthe faithfulشَبِيبٌ،Shabib,"
He said, "I said, 'And among us, [taking] as commander of the faithful, Shabib.'"
فَضَحِكَSo laughedعَبْدُAbdالْمَلِكِAl-Malikوَأَمَرَand orderedبِتَخْلِيَةِthe releasing ofسَبِيلِهِ،his path,
Abd al-Malik laughed and ordered his release,
فَتَخَلَّصَso he freed himselfبِحِيلَتِهِby his trickوَفِطْنَتِهِand his clevernessلِإِزَالَةِin shiftingالْإِعْرَابِthe grammatical inflectionعَنِfromالرَّفْعِthe nominative caseإِلَىtoالنَّصْبِ.the accusative case.
thus saving himself through his trick and cleverness in shifting the grammatical inflection from the nominative to the accusative case.
