وَقِيلَAnd it was saidلِرَسُولِto the Messengerاللَّهِ،of God,

And it was said to the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him: Is not what has preceded of your sin forgiven you and what has lagged behind?

and what has lagged behind?

قَالَ:He said:أَفَلَاShould I notأَكُونَbeعَبْداًa servantشَكُوراً!grateful!

He said: Should I not be a grateful servant!

وَفِيAnd inالْحَدِيثِthe hadithأَنَّthatرَجُلاًa manقَالَsaid

And in the hadith that a man said in prayer behind the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him...

فِيinالصَّلَاةِthe prayerخَلْفَbehindرَسُولِthe Messengerاللَّهِ،of God,

behind the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him:

صَلَّىpeaceاللَّهُbeعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَلَّمَ:and blessings:

peace and blessings be upon him:

اللَّهُمَّO Godرَبَّنَاour Lordلَكَto Youالْحَمْدُis the praiseحَمْداًa praiseزَاكِياًpureطَيِّباًgoodمُبَارَكاًblessedفِيهِ.in it.

O God, our Lord, to You is the praise, a pure, good, blessed praise in it.

فَلَمَّاSo whenانْصَرَفَfinishedرَسُولُthe Messengerاللَّهِ،of God,

So when the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, finished, he said: Which of you is the owner of the word?

صَلَّىpeaceاللَّهُbeعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَلَّمَ،and blessings,

peace and blessings be upon him,

قَالَ:he said:أَيُّكُمْWhich of youصَاحِبُis the ownerالْكَلِمَةِ؟of the word?

he said: Which of you is the owner of the word?

قَالَsaidأَحَدُهُمْ:one of them:أَنَاI amيَاOرَسُولَMessengerاللَّهِ.of God.

One of them said: I am, O Messenger of God.

فَقَالَ:So he said:لَقَدْIndeedرَأَيْتُI sawبِضْعَةًa numberوَثَلَاثِينَand thirtyمَلَكاًangelsيَبْتَدِرُونَracingأَيُّهُمْwhich of themيَكْتُبُهَاwrites itأَوَّلاً،first,

So he said: I indeed saw over thirty angels racing to see which of them would write it down first.

وَقِيلَ:And it was said:نِسْيَانُforgettingالنِّعْمَةِthe blessingأَوَّلُis the firstدَرَجَاتِdegreeالْكُفْرِ،of ingratitude,

And it was said: Forgetting the blessing is the first degree of ingratitude.

وَلِابْنِAnd to Ibnالْمُقَفَّعِ:Al-Muqaffa:

And to Ibn Al-Muqaffa:

مَنَنْتُI conferred a favorعَلَىuponقَوْمِيmy peopleفَأَبْدَوْاso they showedعَدَاوَةًhostility......فَقُلْتُso I saidلَهُمْto themكُفْؤُequalالْعَدَاوَةِto hostilityوَالشُّكْرِis gratitude

I conferred a favor upon my people so they showed hostility... so I said to them: The equal of hostility is gratitude.

وَقَالَAnd saidآخَرُ:another:

And another said:

أَلَاAhفِيinسَبِيلِthe pathاللَّهِof GodوُدٌّaffectionبَذَلْتُهُI offered it......لِمَنْto one whoلَمْdid notيَكُنْbecomeعِنْدِيwith meلِمِعْشَارِهِto a tenth of itأَهْلَاworthy

Ah, in the path of God is affection I offered... to one who was not worthy of a tenth of it with me.

وَلَكِنَّButإِذَاwhenفَكَّرْتُI reflectedفِيهِupon itوَجَدْتُنِيI found myself......بِحُسْنِيby my goodnessإِلَيْهِto himقَدْindeedأَفَدْتُI benefitedبِهِtherebyعَقْلَاan intellect

But when I reflected upon it I found myself... by my goodness to him, I had thereby benefited an intellect.

وَقَالَAnd saidأَمِيرُthe Commanderالْمُؤْمِنِينَof the FaithfulعَلِيُّAliبْنُson ofأَبِيAbiطَالِبٍ:Talib:

And the Commander of the Faithful, Ali bin Abi Talib, said: Do not abandon kindness for the ingratitude of the one who is ungrateful for it.

لَاDo notتَدَعِabandonالْمَعْرُوفَkindnessلِكُفْرِfor the ingratitudeمَنْof one whoكَفَرَهُwas ungrateful for it

Do not abandon kindness for the ingratitude of the one who is ungrateful for it.

فَإِنَّهُfor indeedيَشْكُرُكَwill thank youعَلَيْهِfor itأَشْكَرُthe most gratefulالشَّاكِرِينَ،of the grateful,

for indeed the most grateful of people will thank you for it.

وَقَدْAndقِيلَit has been saidفِيinذَلِكَ:that:

And it has been said in that regard:

يَدُThe handالْمَعْرُوفِof kindnessغُنْمٌis a gainحَيْثُwhereverكَانَتْit was......تَحَمَّلَهَاbore itشَكُورٌa grateful personأَمْorكَفُورُan ungrateful person

The hand of kindness is a gain wherever it was... whether a grateful or an ungrateful person bore it.

فَعِنْدَSo withالشَّاكِرِينَthe gratefulلَهَاfor itجَزَاءٌis a reward......وَعِنْدَand withاللَّهِGodمَاis whatكَفَرَdeniedالْكَفُورُthe ungrateful

So with the grateful is a reward for it... and with God is what the ungrateful denied.

قَالَSaidبَعْضُهُمْ:some of them:مَاNotأَنْعَمَbestowedاللَّهُGodعَلَىuponعَبْدٍa servantنِعْمَةًa blessingفَشَكَرَso he thankedذَلِكَfor thatإِلَّاexceptلَمْHe did notيُحَاسِبْهُcall him to accountعَلَىforتِلْكَthatالنِّعْمَةِ،blessing.

Some of them said: God does not bestow a blessing upon a servant and he is grateful for it except that He will not call him to account for that blessing.

وَقَالَAnd saidبَعْضُsomeالْحُكَمَاءِ:of the wise:عِنْدَUponالتَّرَاخِيslacknessعَنْinشُكْرِthankingالْمُنْعِمِthe Bestowerتَحُلُّbefallعَظَائِمُthe greatestالنِّقَمِ.punishments.

And some of the wise said: Upon slackness in thanking the Bestower, the greatest punishments befall.

قِيلَ:It was said:وَكَانَand wasرَسُولُthe Messengerاللَّهِ،of God,

It was said: And the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, used to frequently say to Aishah, may God be pleased with her: What did your house or the house of the Jew do?

كَثِيراًfrequentlyمَاwhatيَقُولُhe saysلِعَائِشَةَ،to Aishah,

used to frequently say to Aishah,

What did your house or the house of the Jew do?

فَتَقُولُ:So she says:

So she says:

It rewards you or praises you, and indeed whoever praises you for what you did is like one who rewarded.

فَيَقُولُ،So he says,عَلَيْهِupon himوَعَلَىand uponآلِهِhis familyالسَّلَامُ:be peace:

So he says, upon him and upon his family be peace:

قَدْIndeedصَدَقَhas spoken the truthيَاOعَائِشَةُ،Aishah,

You have spoken the truth, O Aishah.

إِنَّIndeedاللَّهَGodجَلَّmajesticوَعَزَّand mightyإِذَاwhenأَجْرَىHe causesلِرَجُلٍfor a manعَلَىatيَدَيْthe handsرَجُلٍof a manخَيْراًgood

Indeed God, majestic and mighty, when He causes good to happen for a man at the hands of a man...

فَلَمْand he did notيَشْكُرْهُthank himفَلَيْسَthen he is notلِلَّهِto Godبِشَاكِرٍ.grateful.

and he does not thank him, then he is not grateful to God.

قِيلَIt was saidوَقِيلَand it was saidلِذِيto Dhuالرُّمَّةِ:Al-Rummah:

It was said, and it was said to Dhu Al-Rummah: Why did you single out Bilal bin Abi Burdah for your praise?

لِمَWhyخَصَصْتَdid you single outبِلَالَBilalبْنَson ofأَبِيAbiبُرْدَةَBurdahبِمَدْحِكَ؟for your praise?

Why did you single out Bilal bin Abi Burdah for your praise?

فَقَالَ:So he said:لِأَنَّهُBecause heوَطَّأَsmoothedمَضْجَعِيmy resting placeوَأَكْرَمَand honoredمَجْلِسِيmy gathering

So he said: Because he smoothed my resting place and honored my gathering...

so it is right for the abundant kindness of his with me that it takes possession of my gratitude.

وَمِنْهُمْAnd among themمَنْare those whoيُقَدِّمُprioritizeتَرْكَleavingمُطَالَبَةِdemandingالشُّكْرِgratitude

And among them are those who prioritize leaving the demand for gratitude and attribute it to noble character.

وَيَنْسِبُهُand attribute itإِلَىtoمَكَارِمِnobleالْأَخْلَاقِ،character,

and attribute it to noble character,

Whoever waits for gratitude for his kindness has indeed summoned immediate recompense.

وَقَالَAnd saidبَعْضُsomeالْحُكَمَاءِ:of the wise:كَمَاJust asأَنَّindeedالْكُفْرَingratitudeيَقْطَعُcuts offمَادَّةَthe materialالْإِنْعَامِof bestowing

And some of the wise said: Just as ingratitude cuts off the material of bestowing, so too boasting about a favor wipes out the reward.

فَكَذَلِكَso likewiseالِاسْتِطَالَةُboastingبِالصَّنِيعَةِabout the favorتَمْمَحْقُwipes outالْأَجْرَ.the reward.

so likewise boasting about the favor wipes out the reward.

وَقَالَAnd saidعَلِيُّAliبْنُson ofعُبَيْدَةَ:Ubaidah:مِنَOfالْمَكَارِمِthe noble traitsالظَّاهِرَةِapparent

and raising aspiration above seeking recompense...

Some of the wise said: Kindness to the noble results in good, and kindness to the ignoble results in evil.

while the vipers drink from it and it results in venom.

وَقَالَAnd saidسُفْيَانُ:Sufyan:وَجَدْنَاWe foundأَصْلَthe originكُلِّof everyعَدَاوَةٍhostilityاصْطِنَاعَis bestowingالْمَعْرُوفِkindnessإِلَىuponاللِّئَامِ.the ignoble.

And Sufyan said: We found the origin of every hostility is bestowing kindness upon the ignoble.

قِيلَ:It was said:وَأَثَارَand rousedجَمَاعَةٌa groupمِنَofالْأَعْرَابِthe Bedouinsضَبُعاًa hyenaفَدَخَلَتْso it enteredخِبَاءَthe tentشَيْخٍof an old manمِنْهُمْ.among them.

It was said: A group of Bedouins roused a hyena, and it entered the tent of an old man among them.

فَقَالُوا:So they said:أَخْرِجْهَا.Drive her out.

So they said: Drive her out.

فَقَالَ:He said:مَاI wouldكُنْتُnotلِأَفْعَلَdo soوَقَدْwhileاسْتَجَارَتْshe sought refugeبِي.with me.

He said: I would not do so, for she has sought refuge with me.

Then the old man slept one day, and she leaped upon him and killed him.

فَقَالَSo saidشَاعِرُهُمْtheir poetفِيregardingذَلِكَ:that:

So their poet said regarding that:
