and indeed the astrologers had said to Shamr at his birth that he would die between two mountains of iron, so he placed his shield under his feet from the intensity of the scorching heat and placed a shield of iron upon his head from the heat of the scorching heat, so he remembered what had been told to him in his birth and said to the people: Disperse wherever you like for I have plunged you into ruin, so he and everyone who was with him perished.

And it was narrated that when the head of Marwan bin Muhammad al-Ja'di was carried to Abu al-Abbas while he was in Kufa, he sat for him in a public assembly and they brought the head and placed it before him, so he said to those who attended: Does any of you know this head? So stood up Saeed bin Amr bin Ja'da bin Hubayra and leaned over it and contemplated it for a long time then said: This is the head of Abu Abd al-Malik our caliph yesterday, may Allah have mercy on him, and returned to his assembly, so Abu al-Abbas leaped up until he left the assembly and Ibn Ja'da left and the people talked about his speech, so his sons and family blamed him and said: You exposed us and yourself to destruction! So he said: Be quiet, may Allah make you ugly! Are you not the ones who advised me yesterday in Harran to stay behind from Marwan and I did that other than the act of loyalty and gratitude, and nothing could wash away the shame of that deed except this, and I am only an old man near death, so if I escape this day from being killed I will die tomorrow! He said: and his sons began expecting the messengers of Abu al-Abbas to knock upon him in the depth of the night, so they woke up and no one had come to him, and the old man went out and behold, he was with Sulayman bin Mujalid, so when he saw him he said: O son of Ja'da, shall I not bring you glad tidings of the good opinion of the Commander of the Faithful concerning you? For indeed he mentioned this night what came from you. So he said: This speech did not issue from the old man except out of loyalty, and he is closer to us in relation and closer to us in kinship than he was to Marwan, if we are good to him. He said: Indeed.
وَذُكِرَAnd it was mentionedأَنَّthat al-Mansurالْمَنْصُورَsentأَرْسَلَto an old manإِلَىfrom the peopleشَيْخٍof Shamمِنْand he wasأَهْلِfrom the inner circleالشَّامِof Hishamوَكَانَbin Abd al-Malikمِنْbin Marwan,بِطَانَةِso he asked himهِشَامِabout Hisham'sبْنِmanagementعَبْدِin his warsالْمَلِكِwith the Khawarij,بْنِso the old manمَرْوَانَdescribed to himفَسَأَلَهُwhat he managed,عَنْso he said:تَدْبِيرِHe did,هِشَامٍmay Allahفِيhave mercy on him,حُرُوبِهِsuch and such,مَعَand made,الْخَوَارِجِmay Allahفَوَصَفَhave mercy on him,الشَّيْخُsuch and such.لَهُSo al-Mansurمَاsaid:دَبَّرَ،Rise,فَقَالَ:may the curseفَعَلَ،of Allahرَحِمَهُbe upon you!اللَّهُ،Do you treadكَذَاupon my carpetوَصَنَعَ،and invoke mercyرَحِمَهُupon my enemy?اللَّهُ،So the manكَذَا.stood upفَقَالَand saidالْمَنْصُورُ:while turning away:قُمْIndeed,عَلَيْكَthe blessingلَعْنَةُof your enemyاللَّهِ!is a necklaceتَطْأُaround my neckبِسَاطِيthat noneوَتَتَرَحَّمُshall removeعَلَىexceptعَدُوِّي؟the one who washesفَقَامَmy body for burial!الرَّجُلُSo al-Mansurفَقَالَsaid to him:وَهُوَReturn,مُولٍّ:O old man,إِنَّso he returned.نِعْمَةَHe said:عَدُوِّكَI bear witnessلَقِلَادَةٌthat you areفِيthe offspringعُنُقِيof a free womanلَاand of a noble stock,يَنْزَعُهَاreturnإِلَّاto yourغَاسِلِي!account.فَقَالَSo the old manلَهُreturnedالْمَنْصُورُ:to his accountارْجِعْuntilيَاhe finished,شَيْخُ،so he orderedفَرَجَعَ.wealth for himفَقَالَ:and he took itأَشْهَدُand said:أَنَّكَBy Allah,نَهِيضُO Commanderحُرَّةٍof the Faithful,وَغِرَاسِI have no needشَرِيفٍ،for it,ارْجِعْand indeedإِلَىthere diedحَدِيثِكَ.from meفَعَادَthoseالشَّيْخُwhose memoryفِيI cherished,حَدِيثِهِso how muchحَتَّىdo I needإِذَاto standفَرَغَat anyone's doorدَعَاafter him,لَهُand had it not beenبِمَالٍfor the majestyفَأَخَذَهُof the Commanderوَقَالَ:of the Faithfulوَاللَّهِand my preferenceيَاfor obeying himأَمِيرَI would not have wornالْمُؤْمِنِينَthe bounty of anyoneمَاafter him!لِيSo al-Mansurإِلَيْهِsaid:حَاجَةٌIf you wish,وَلَقَدْmay Allahمَاتَprotect you,عَنِّيfor had there not beenمَنْfor your peopleكُنْتُanyone other than youفِيyou would haveذِكْرِهِkept for themفَمَاan immortalأَحْوَجَنِيgloryإِلَىand an enduringوُقُوفٍmight.عَلَىmight.بَابِهِmight.أَحَدٌmight.بَعْدَهُmight.وَلَوْلَاmight.جَلَالَةُmight.أَمِيرِmight.الْمُؤْمِنِينَmight.وَإِيثَارِيmight.طَاعَتَهُmight.مَاmight.لَبِسْتُmight.نِعْمَةَmight.أَحَدٍmight.بَعْدَهُ!might.فَقَالَmight.الْمَنْصُورُ:might.إِذَاmight.شِئْتَmight.لِلَّهِmight.أَنْتَmight.فَلَوْmight.لَمْmight.يَكُنْmight.لِقَوْمِكَmight.غَيْرُكَmight.لَكُنْتَmight.قَدْmight.أَبْقَيْتَmight.لَهُمْmight.مَجْدًاmight.مُخَلَّدًاmight.وَعِزًّاmight.بَاقِيًا.might.
And it was mentioned that al-Mansur sent to an old man from the people of Sham and he was from the inner circle of Hisham bin Abd al-Malik bin Marwan, so he asked him about Hisham's management in his wars with the Khawarij, so the old man described to him what he managed, so he said: He did, may Allah have mercy on him, such and such, and made, may Allah have mercy on him, such and such. So al-Mansur said: Rise, may the curse of Allah be upon you! Do you tread upon my carpet and invoke mercy upon my enemy? So the man stood up and said while turning away: Indeed, the blessing of your enemy is a necklace around my neck that none shall remove except the one who washes my body for burial! So al-Mansur said to him: Return, O old man, so he returned. He said: I bear witness that you are the offspring of a free woman and of a noble stock, return to your account. So the old man returned to his account until he finished, so he ordered wealth for him and he took it and said: By Allah, O Commander of the Faithful, I have no need for it, and indeed there died from me those whose memory I cherished, so how much do I need to stand at anyone's door after him, and had it not been for the majesty of the Commander of the Faithful and my preference for obeying him I would not have worn the bounty of anyone after him! So al-Mansur said: If you wish, may Allah protect you, for had there not been for your people anyone other than you you would have kept for them an immortal glory and an enduring might.
