وَيُقَالُ:Andهُوَheأَوْفَىisمِنَmoreالسَّمَوْأَلِfaithfulبْنِthanعَادِيَاءَ،al-Samaw'al bin 'Adiya.
And it is said: He is more faithful than al-Samaw'al bin 'Adiya.
وَكَانَAndمِنْitوَفَائِهِwasأَنَّpartامرَأَofالْقَيْسِhisبْنَfidelityحُجْرٍthatالْكِنْدِيَّImru' al-Qays bin Hujr al-Kindi,
And part of his fidelity was that Imru' al-Qays bin Hujr al-Kindi,
لَمَّاwhenأَرَادَheالْخُرُوجَwantedإِلَىtoقَيْصَرَset outمَلِكِfor Caesar,
when he wanted to set out for Caesar,
الرُّومِthe kingاسْتَوْدَعَof Rome,السَّمَوْأَلَhe depositedدُرُوعاًcoats of mailلَهُ،with al-Samaw'al.
the king of Rome, he deposited coats of mail with al-Samaw'al.
فَلَمَّاThenمَاتَwhenامْرُؤُImru' al-Qaysالْقَيْسِdied,
Then when Imru' al-Qays died,
غَزَاهُa kingمَلِكٌfrom the kingsمِنْof ash-Shamمُلُوكِattacked him,الشَّامِso al-Samaw'alفَتَحَرَّزَfortifiedمِنْهُhimselfالسَّمَوْأَلُ،against him.
a king from the kings of ash-Sham attacked him, so al-Samaw'al fortified himself against him.
فَأَخَذَSoالْمَلِكُthe kingابْناًtookلَهُa son of his,
So the king took a son of his,
ذَكَرُواtheyأَنَّهُmentionedكَانَthatمَتَصَيِّداً،he was out hunting,
they mentioned that he was out hunting,
فَصَاحَand heبِهِ:cried outيَاto him:
and he cried out to him:
سَمَوْأَلُOهَذَاSamaw'al,ابْنُكَthis isفِيyour sonيَدِيin my hands,
O Samaw'al, this is your son in my hands,
وَقَدْandعَلِمْتَyou knowأَنَّthatامْرَأَImru' al-Qaysالْقَيْسِisابْنُmy cousin,عَمِّيand I amوَأَنَاmost entitledأَحَقُّtoبِمِيرَاثِهِhis inheritance.
and you know that Imru' al-Qays is my cousin, and I am most entitled to his inheritance.
فَإِنْSo ifدَفَعْتَyou hand overإِلَيَّto meالدُّرُوعَthe coats of mail,
So if you hand over to me the coats of mail,
وَإِلَّاotherwiseذَبَحْتُI will slaughterابْنَكَ.your son.
otherwise I will slaughter your son.
فَقَالَ:He said:أَجِّلْنِي،Grant me a respite,
He said: Grant me a respite,
فَأَجَّلَهُ.so he granted him a respite.
so he granted him a respite.
فَجَمَعَSo he gatheredأَهْلَthe membersبَيْتِهِof his householdوَشَاوَرَهُمْ،and consulted them,
So he gathered the members of his household and consulted them,
فَكُلٌّand every oneأَشَارَadvised himعَلَيْهِthatأَنْhe should hand overيَدْفَعَthe coats of mailالدُّرُوعَand saveوَأَنْhis son.يَسْتَنْقِذَand saveابْنَهُ،his son.
and every one advised him that he should hand over the coats of mail and save his son.
فَلَمَّاThen whenأَصْبَحَmorning came,أَشْرَفَhe appeared
Then when morning came, he appeared [on the ramparts]
فَقَالَ:and said:لَيْسَThere isإِلَىno wayدَفْعِto handing overالدُّرُوعِthe coats of mail,
and said: There is no way to handing over the coats of mail,
سَبِيلٌwayفَاصْنَعْso doمَاwhatأَنْتَyouصَانِعْ!are going to do!
so do what you are going to do!
فَذَبَحَSo the kingالْمَلِكُslaughteredابْنَهُhis sonوَهُوَwhile heيَنْظُرُwas lookingإِلَيْهِ،at him.
So the king slaughtered his son while he was looking at him.
وَكَانَAnd heيَهُودِيّاً،was a Jew.
And he was a Jew.
فَانْصَرَفَThen the kingالْمَلِكُ،departed,وَوَافَىand al-Samaw'alالسَّمَوْأَلُfulfilled his trustبِالدُّرُوعِwith the coats of mailالْمَوْسِمَat the season,
Then the king departed, and al-Samaw'al fulfilled his trust with the coats of mail at the season,
فَدَفَعَهَاand handed them overإِلَىtoوَرَثَةِthe heirsامْرِئِof Imru'الْقَيْسِal-Qays,
and handed them over to the heirs of Imru' al-Qays,
وَقَالَand he saidفِيregardingذَلِكَ:that:
and he said regarding that:
وَفَيْتُI kept faithبِأَدْرِعِwith the coats of mailالْكِنْدِيِّ،of the Kindi,إِنِّيverily I......إِذَاwheneverمَاother folkخَانَbreak faith,أَقْوَامٌI keepوَفَيْتُfaith.
I kept faith with the coats of mail of the Kindi, verily I ... whenever other folk break faith, I keep faith.
وَقَالُواAnd they saidعِنْدَهُwith himكَنْزٌis a greatرَغِيبٌtreasure,
And they said: With him is a great treasure,
فَلَاso no,وَأَبِيكَby your father,أَغْدُرُI will not betrayمَاas long asمَشَيْتُI walk.
so no, by your father, I will not betray as long as I walk.
بَنَىBuiltلِيfor meعَادِيَاءُ'Adiya'حِصْناًa strong fortressحَصِيناًand a well,
Built for me 'Adiya' a strong fortress and a well,
وَبِئْراًwheneverكُلَّمَاI wished,شِئْتُI drewاسْتَقَيْتُwater.
whenever I wished, I drew water.
وَقَالَAnd al-A'shaالْأَعْشَىsaidفِيregardingذَلِكَ:that:
And al-A'sha said regarding that:
كُنْBeكَالسَّمَوْأَلِlike al-Samaw'alإِذْwhenسَارَthere marchedالْهُمَامُthe brave leaderلَهُtoward him
Be like al-Samaw'al when there marched the brave leader toward him
فِيinجَحْفَلٍan armyكَسَوَادِlike the blacknessاللَّيْلِof night,
in an army like the blackness of night, immense and swarming,
جَرَّارِimmense and swarming.

خَيَّرَهُHe gave himخُطَّتَيْthe choiceخَسْفٍ،of two paths of disgrace,
He gave him the choice of two paths of disgrace,
فَقَالَand he saidلَهُto him:
and he said to him:
اذْبَحْSlaughterأَسِيرَكَyour captive,
Slaughter your captive,
إِنِّيfor I amمَانِعٌprotectorجَارِيof my neighbor.
for I am protector of my neighbor.
وَقِيلَ:And it is said:هُوَHe isأَوْفَىmore faithfulمِنَthanالْحَارِثِal-Harithبْنِbinعُبَادٍ،'Ubad,
And it is said: He is more faithful than al-Harith bin 'Ubad,
وَكَانَand partمِنْof hisوَفَائِهِfidelity wasأَنَّهُthat he took prisonerأَسَرَAdiy binعَدِيَّRabi'ahبْنَwithoutرَبِيعَةَknowingوَلَمْhim,
and part of his fidelity was that he took prisoner 'Adiy bin Rabi'ah without knowing him,
يَعْرِفْهُ،knowing him,
knowing him,
فَقَالَ:and said:دُلَّنِيGuide meعَلَىtoعَدِيٍّ.'Adiy.
and said: Guide me to 'Adiy.
فَقَالَ:He said:إِنْIfأَنَاIدَلَلْتُكَguide youعَلَىto 'Adiy,عَدِيٍّwill youأَتُؤْمِنُنِي؟grant me safety?
He said: If I guide you to 'Adiy, will you grant me safety?
قَالَ:He said:نَعَمْ،Yes.
He said: Yes.
قَالَ:He said:فَأَنَاThen I amعَدِيٌّ.'Adiy.
He said: Then I am 'Adiy.
فَخَلَاهُSo he let him goوَقَالَand saidفِيregardingذَلِكَ:that:
So he let him go and said regarding that:
لَهْفُAlasنَفْسِيmy soulعَلَىfor 'Adiy,عَدِيٍّwhenوَقَدْhe was broughtأُسـnear toقِبَdeathلِلْمَوْتِand graspedوَاحْتَوَتْهُby the twoالْيَدَانِhands.
Alas my soul for 'Adiy, when he was brought near to death and grasped by the two hands.
وَيُقَالُ:And it is said:هُوَHe isأَوْفَىmore faithfulمِنْthanعَوْفِ'Awf binبْنِMuhallim,
And it is said: He is more faithful than 'Awf bin Muhallim,
مَحْلَّمٍ،Muhallim,
Muhallim,
وَكَانَand partمِنْof hisوَفَائِهِfidelity wasأَنَّthat Marwanمَرْوَانَal-QarazhالْقَرَظَraidedغَزَاBakr binبَكْرَWail, soبْنَthey routedوَائِلٍhis army,
and part of his fidelity was that Marwan al-Qarazh raided Bakr bin Wail, so they routed his army,
فَفَضُّواand a manجَيْشَهُfrom themوَأَسَرَهُtook him prisonerرَجُلٌwhile he did notمِنْهُمْknow him.
and a man from them took him prisoner while he did not know him.
وَهُوَSo he brought himلَاto his mother,يَعْرِفُهُ،so she said:
So he brought him to his mother, so she said:
فَأَتَىVerily youبِهِare struttingأُمَّهُproudly with yourفَقَالَتْ:captive as ifإِنَّكَyou broughtلَتَخْتَالُMarwanبِأَسِيرِكَal-Qarazh!
Verily you are strutting proudly with your captive as if you brought Marwan al-Qarazh!
كَأَنَّكَMarwan!
Marwan!
جِئْتَcaptiveبِمَرْوَانَas if youالْقَرَظِ!brought Marwan al-Qarazh!
as if you brought Marwan al-Qarazh!
فَقَالَMarwan saidلَهَاto her:
Marwan said to her:
مَرْوَانُ:And whatوَمَاdo you hopeتَرْجِينَfor fromمِنْMarwan?
And what do you hope for from Marwan?
مَرْوَانَ؟Marwan?

قَالَتْ:She said:
She said:
عِظَمُA greatفِدَائِهِ.ransom for him.
A great ransom for him.
قَالَ:He said:وَكَمْAnd how muchتَرْتَجِينَdo you hopeمِنْfor asفِدَائِهِ؟his ransom?
He said: And how much do you hope for as his ransom?
قَالَتْ:She said:مِائَةُOne hundredبَعِيرٍ.camels.
She said: One hundred camels.
قَالَMarwan said:مَرْوَانُ:That isذَلِكَyours onلَكَcondition thatعَلَىyou return meأَنْto Khumamahتَرُدُّينِيthe daughterإِلَىof 'Awf binخُمَامَةَMuhallim.بِنْتِthe daughterعَوْفِof 'Awf binبْنِMuhallim.مَحْلَّمٍ.Muhallim.
Marwan said: That is yours on condition that you return me to Khumamah the daughter of 'Awf bin Muhallim.
قَالَتْ:She said:وَمَنْAnd whoلِيwill giveبِمِائَةٍme one hundredمِنَcamels?
She said: And who will give me one hundred camels?
الْإِبِلِ!camels!

فَأَخَذَSo he tookعُوداًa twigمِنَfrom the groundالْأَرْضِand said:
So he took a twig from the ground and said:
فَقَالَ:This isهَذَاyours forلَكَthem.بِهَا.them.
This is yours for them.
فَمَضَتْSo she wentبِهِwith himإِلَىto 'Awf,عَوْفٍso he soughtفَاسْتَجَارَprotectionبِخُمَامَةَwith Khumamah,
So she went with him to 'Awf, so he sought protection with Khumamah,
ابْنَتِهِ،his daughter.

فَبَعَثَThen Amr binعَمْرُوHind sentبْنُdemanding thatهِنْدٍhe bring himأَنْto him,
Then Amr bin Hind sent demanding that he bring him to him,
يَأْتِيَهُso he said:بِهِ،My daughterفَقَالَ:has granted himقَدْprotectionأَجَارَتْهُand there isابْنَتِيno wayوَلَيْسَto him.إِلَيْهِno wayسَبِيلٌ.to him.
so he said: My daughter has granted him protection and there is no way to him.
فَقَالَAmr said:عَمْروٌ:I have swornقَدْoath notآلَيْتُto pardon himأَنْuntil he placesلَاhis handأَعْفُوَin my hand.عَنْهُuntil he placesأَوْhis handيَضَعَin my hand.يَدَهُhis handفِيin my hand.يَدِي.in my hand.
Amr said: I have sworn an oath not to pardon him until he places his hand in my hand.
فَقَالَ'Awf said:عَوْفٌ:He shall placeيَضَعُhis handيَدَهُin your handفِيon conditionيَدِكَthat my handعَلَىis betweenأَنْtheir twoتَكُونَhands.يَدِيis betweenبَيْنَهُمَا،their twoفَأَجَابَهُhands.عَمْروٌSo Amrإِلَىanswered himذَلِكَ،to that.
'Awf said: He shall place his hand in your hand on condition that my hand is between their two hands. So Amr answered him to that.
فَجَاءَSo 'Awf cameعَوْفٌwith Marwanبِمَرْوَانَand entered himفَأَدْخَلَهُupon him,عَلَيْهِso he placedفَوَضَعَhis handيَدَهُin his hand,فِيand 'Awf placedيَدِهِhis handوَوَضَعَbetweenعَوْفٌtheir two hands,يَدَهُand he pardonedبَيْنَhim.أَيْدِيهِمَاand he pardonedفَعَفَاand he pardonedعَنْهُ.him.
So 'Awf came with Marwan and entered him upon him, so he placed his hand in his hand, and 'Awf placed his hand between their two hands, and he pardoned him.
وَيُقَالُ:And it is said:إِنَّthat Qubadhقُبَاذَorderedأَمَرَthe executionبِقَتْلِof a manرَجُلٍfrom thoseمِنَwho criticizedالطَّاعِنِينَthe kingdom,عَلَىso he wasالْمَمْلَكَةِ،killed.
And it is said: that Qubadh ordered the execution of a man from those who criticized the kingdom, so he was killed.
فَقُتِلَ،so he was killed.
so he was killed.
فَوَقَفَThen a neighborعَلَىand clientرَأْسِهِof his stoppedرَجُلٌat his headمِنْand said:
Then a neighbor and client of his stopped at his head and said:
جِيرَانِهِMay Godوَصَنَائِعِهِhave mercyفَقَالَ:on you,رَحِمَكَverily youاللَّهُ،used to honorإِنْthe neighbor,كُنْتَendure his harm,
May God have mercy on you, verily you used to honor the neighbor, endure his harm,
لَتُكْرِمُconsoleالْجَارَthe destitute,
console the destitute,
وَتَصْبِرُand standعَلَىup in timesأَذَاهُof calamity.وَتُوَاسِيand standأَهْلَup in timesالْخَلَّةِof calamity.وَتَقُومُand standبِالنَّائِبَةِup in timesوَالْعَجَبُAnd the wonderكَيْفَis howوَجَدَSatan foundالشَّيْطَانُan openingفِيكَin youمَسَاغاًso as to leadحَتَّىyou to disobeyحَمَلَكَyour king,عَلَىso you departedعِصْيَانِfrom his mandatoryمَلِكِكَobedienceفَخَرَجْتَto disobedience to him,مِنْand for a longطَاعَتِهِtime has he prevailedالْمَفْرُوضَةِover one who isإِلَىstronger than youمَعْصِيَتِهِin powerوَقَدِيماًand firmerمَاin resolve!
and endure his harm, console the destitute, and stand up in times of calamity. And the wonder is how Satan found an opening in you so as to lead you to disobey your king, so you departed from his mandatory obedience to disobedience to him, and for a long time has he prevailed over one who is stronger than you in power and firmer in resolve!
تَمَكَّنَstrongerمِمَّنْthan youهُوَin powerأَشَدُّand firmerمِنْكَin resolve!قُوَّةًstrongerوَأَثْبَتُthan youعَزْماً!in power
stronger than you in power and firmer in resolve!
فَأَخَذَSo the chiefصَاحِبُof the policeالشَّرْطَةِtookالرَّجُلَthe manفَحَبَسَهُand imprisoned him,
So the chief of the police took the man and imprisoned him,
وَأَنْهَىand reportedكَلَامَهُhis speechإِلَىto Qubadh,
and reported his speech to Qubadh,
قُبَاذَ،to Qubadh,

فَوَقَّعَ:so he wrote in the margin:

يُحْسَنُGood isإِلَىdone to this oneهَذَاwho showed gratitude,

إِحْسَاناًand his rankيُفَضَّلُis raised,بِهِand his grantوَتُرْفَعُis increased.

مَرْتَبَتُهُis raised,وَيُزَادُand his grantفِيis increased.عَطَائِهِ.is increased.
