يَبِيتُspends the nightأَبُوكَyour fatherبِهَاin itمُغْدِفاًveiled......كَمَاjust asسَاوَرَassailedالْهِرَّةَthe catالثَّعْلَبُthe fox
Your father spends the night in it veiled... just as the fox assailed the cat.
وَقَدْand indeedيُولَدُis bornمِنْfromبَيْنِbetweenالْكِلَابِthe dogsوَالثَّعَالِبِand the foxesهَذِهِtheseالْكِلَابُdogsالسَّلُوقِيَّةُSalukiالْمَاهِرَةُskilfulبِالصَّيْدِat hunting
And indeed there are born between dogs and foxes these Saluki dogs skilful at hunting.
وَقِيلَand it was saidإِنَّهُthat itيَخْرُجُemergesمِنْfromبَيْنِbetweenالذِّئْبِthe wolfوَالْكَلْبَةِand the bitchوَلَدٌan offspringيُسَمَّىnamedالدَّيْسَمَal-Daysam
And it was said that there emerges from between the wolf and the bitch an offspring named al-Daysam.
قَالَsaidبَشَّارٌBashshar
Bashshar said:
أُدَيْسِمُO DaysamيَاOابْنَson ofالذِّئْبِthe wolfمِنْfromنَسْلِthe lineage ofزَارِعٍZari'......أَتْرُويdo you transmitهِجَائِيmy satireسَادِراًheedlesslyغَيْرَwithoutمُقَصِّرٍfalling short
O Daysam, son of the wolf from the lineage of Zari'... do you transmit my satire heedlessly without falling short?
وَزَارِعٌand Zari'اسْمُis the name ofكَلْبٍa dogيُعْرَفُknownبِزَارِعٍas Zari'
And Zari' is the name of a dog known as Zari'.
وَزَعَمُواand they claimedأَنَّهُthat itيَخْرُجُemergesمِنْfromبَيْنِbetweenالذِّئْبِthe wolfوَالضَّبُعِand the hyenaوَلَدٌan offspringيُسَمَّىnamedالسَّمْعَal-Sam' locator
And they claimed that there emerges from between the wolf and the hyena an offspring named al-Sam'.
كَالْحَيَّةِlike the snakeلَاdoes notيَعْرِفُknowالْعِلَلَillnessesوَلَاand does notيَمُوتُdieإِلَّاexceptبِعَرَضٍby an afflictionيَعْرِضُbefallingلَهُit
Like the snake, it does not know illnesses and does not die except by an affliction befalling it.
وَأَنَّهُand that itأَشَدُّis fiercerعَدْواًin runningوَأَسْرَعُand fasterمِنَthanالرِّيحِthe wind
And that it is fiercer in running and faster than the wind.
قَالَsaidالشَّاعِرُthe poet
The poet said:
مُسْبِلٌtrailingفِيinالْحَيِّthe campأَحْوَىdark-lippedرَفِلُّtrailing garments......فَإِذَاso whenيَغْزُوhe raidsفَسَمْعٌthen a Sam'أَزَلُّslender
Trailing in the camp, dark-lipped, with trailing garments... so when he raids, he is a slender Sam'.
وَمِنْand amongعَجَائِبِthe wonders ofالتَّرْكِيبِhybridization
And among the wonders of hybridization:
فَوَالِجُthe FawalijالْبُخْتِBukhari camelsإِذَاifضُرِبَتْthey are matedفِيwithإِنَاثِfemales ofالْبُخْتِthe Bukhariلَمْthere does notيُخْرِجِproduceالْحِوَارُthe camel calfإِلَّاexceptقَصِيرَshortالْعُنُقِneckedلَاnotيَنَالُreachingكَلَأًpastureوَلَاnorمَاءًwater
If the Fawalij Bukhari stallions are mated with Bukhari females, the resulting camel calf is short-necked, reaching neither pasture nor water.
وَإِذَاand ifضُرِبَتِthey are matedالْفَوَالِجُthe FawalijفِيwithالْعِرَابِArabian camelsجَاءَتْcome forthهَذِهِtheseالْجَوَامِزُJawamizوَالْبُخْتُand Bukhariالْكَرِيمَةُfine camels
And if the Fawalij stallions are mated with Arabian females, there come forth these Jawamiz and fine Bukhari camels.
وَمَتَىand wheneverضُرِبَتْare matedفُحُولُstallions ofالْعِرَابِArabian camelsفِيwithإِنَاثِfemales ofالْبُخْتِthe Bukhariجَاءَتْthere comeهَذِهِtheseالْإِبِلُcamelsالْقَبِيحَةُuglyالْمَنْظَرِin appearance
And whenever Arabian stallions are mated with Bukhari females, there come these ugly-looking camels.
وَقَدْand it hasقِيلَbeen saidفِيregardingالْإِبِلِcamels
And it has been said regarding camels:
إِنَّthatفِيهَاin themعِرْقاًis a traceمِنْofسِفَادِmating withالْجِنِّjinn
That in them is a trace of jinn mating.
وَأَنَّand thatفِيهَاamong themإِبِلاًare camelsوَحْشِيَّةًwildهِيَwhich areمِنْfromبَقَايَاthe remnants ofإِبِلِthe camels ofوَابَارَWabar
And that among them are wild camels which are from the remnants of the camels of Wabar.
لَمَّاwhenأَهْلَكَهُمُHe destroyed themاللَّهُGodجَلَّmajesticوَعَزَّand mightyبَقِيَتْremainedإِبِلُهُمْtheir camels
When God, majestic and mighty, destroyed them, their camels remained.
وَإِنَّand thatالْجَمَلَthe camel stallionمِنْهَاamong themرُبَّمَاperhapsصَارَgoesإِلَىtoأَعْطَانِthe watering places ofالْإِبِلِcamelsفَضَرَبَand mates withفِيaنَاقَةٍshe-camel
And that a camel stallion among them perhaps goes to the watering places of domestic camels and mates with a she-camel.
فَتَجِيءُso there comesمِنْهُfrom itهَذِهِtheseالْمَهْرِيَّةُMahriyyaوَالْغَسْجَدِيَّةُand Ghasjadiyya camelsالَّتِيwhichتُسَمَّىare calledالذَّهَبِيَّةَthe golden ones
So there comes from it these Mahriyya and Ghasjadiyya camels which are called the golden ones.
وَزَعَمُواand they claimedأَنَّthatبِبِلَادِin the land ofالْحَبَشَةِAbyssiniaذَكَرَthe male ofالضِّبَاعِhyenasيَعْرِضُapproachesلِلنَّاقَةِthe she-camelمِنَofالْوَحْشِthe wildفَيَسْفُدُهَاand mates with her
And they claimed that in the land of Abyssinia, the male hyena approaches the wild she-camel and mates with her.
فَتَلْقَحُso she conceivesبِوَلَدٍan offspringعَلَىhavingخِلْقَةِthe form ofالنَّاقَةِthe she-camelوَالضَّبُعِand the hyena
So she conceives an offspring having the form of the she-camel and the hyena.
فَإِنْthen ifكَانَit isأُنْثَىfemaleيَعْرِضُapproachesلَهَاherالثَّوْرُthe bullالْوَحْشِيُّwildفَيَضْرِبُهَاand mates with her
Then if it is female, the wild bull approaches her and mates with her.
فَيَصِيرُso the offspring becomesالْوَلَدُthe offspringزَرَافَةًa giraffeوَيُسَمَّىand it is namedبِالْفَارِسِيَّةِin PersianاشْتُرْUshturكَاوْبَلَنْكِGawpalang
So the offspring becomes a giraffe and is named in Persian Ushtur Gawpalang.
أَيْmeaningخَرَجَit emergedمِنْfromبَيْنِbetweenالْجَمَلِthe camelوَالثَّوْرِand the bullوَالضَّبُعِand the hyena
Meaning: it emerged from between the camel, the bull, and the hyena.
وَقَدْand indeedجَحَدَdeniedالنَّاسُpeopleأَنْthatتَكُونَisالزَّرَافَةُthe giraffeالْأُنْثَىfemaleتَلْقَحُconceivingمِنَfromالزَّرَافَةِthe giraffeالذَّكَرِmale
And indeed people have denied that the female giraffe conceives from the male giraffe.
وَأَمَّاand as forالنَّعَامَةُthe ostrichفَإِنَّهَاitلَاdoes notتَقَعُoccur/happenإِلَّاexceptمِنْfromذَكَرِmaleالنَّعَامِostrichesوَإِنَاثِهَاand their females
And as for the ostrich, it is produced only from male and female ostriches.
وَمِنْand amongنِتَاجِthe offspring ofالطَّيْرِbirdsمَاwhatرَوَاهُnarrated itبَعْضُهُمْsome of themأَنَّهُthat heرَأَىsawطَائِراًa birdلَهُhavingصَوْتٌa voiceحَسَنٌbeautiful
And among bird offspring is what some of them narrated: that he saw a bird with a beautiful voice.
زَعَمُواthey claimedأَنَّهُthat itمِنْis fromنِتَاجِthe offspring ofمَاwhat isبَيْنَbetweenالْقُمْرِيِّthe turtle-doveوَالْفَاخِتَةِand the ring-dove
They claimed that it is from the offspring between the turtle-dove and the ring-dove.
وَقُنَّاصُand the hunters ofالطَّيْرِbirdsيَزْعُمُونَclaimأَنَّthatأَجْنَاساًspeciesمِنَofالطَّيْرِbirdsتَلْتَقِيmeetعَلَىatالْمِيَاهِwatersفَتَسَافَدُand mate
And bird hunters claim that species of birds meet at waters and mate.
وَأَنَّهُمْand that theyلَاdo notيَزَالُونَceaseيَرَوْنَseeingأَشْكَالاًformsلَمْthey have notيَرَوْهَاseen themقَطُّever
And that they continually see forms they have never seen before.
فَيُقَدِّرُونَso they estimateأَنَّهَاthat theyمِنْare fromتَلَاقِيحِthe crossbreedings ofتِلْكَthoseالْمُخْتَلِفَةِdifferent ones
So they estimate that they are from the crossbreedings of those different ones.
[مَسَاوِئُvices ofالنِّتَاجِ]offspring
[The Vices of Offspring]
فَأَمَّاnow as forمَنْwhatيَخْرُجُemergesمِنْfromبَيْنِbetweenبَنِيthe sons ofآدَمَAdam
Now as for what emerges from between the children of Adam:
فَإِنَّهُindeedإِذَاwhenتَزَوَّجَmarriesخُرَاسَانِيٌّa Khorasaniبِهِنْدِيَّةًan Indian womanخَرَجَthere emergesمِنْfromبَيْنِهِمَاthe two of themالذَّهَبُpure goldالْإِبْرِيزُrefined
When a Khorasani man marries an Indian woman, there emerges from the two of them refined pure gold.
غَيْرَexceptأَنَّهُthatيَحْتَاجُhe needsأَنْtoيَحْرُسَguardوَلَدَهُمَاtheir childإِذَاifكَانَit isأُنْثَىfemaleمِنْagainstزِنَاءِadultery ofالْهِنْدِIndia
Except that he needs to guard their child if it is female against the adultery of India.
وَإِذَاand ifكَانَit isذَكَراًmaleمِنْagainstلِوَاطِsodomy ofرِجَالِthe men ofخُرَاسَانَKhorasan
And if it is male, against the sodomy of the men of Khorasan.
وَمِنْand amongخُبْثِthe wickedness ofالنِّتَاجِoffspringابْنُthe son ofالْمُذَكَّرَةِthe masculineمِنَamongالنِّسَاءِwomenوَالْمُؤَنَّثِand the feminineمِنَamongالرِّجَالِmen
And among the wicked offspring is the child of the masculine woman and the feminine man.
يَكُونُhe isأَخْبَثَwickedestنِتَاجاًin offspringمِنَthanالْبَغْلِthe muleوَأَفْسَدَand most corruptأَعْرَاقاًin lineageمِنَthanالسَّمْعِthe Sam'
He is the wickedest in offspring than the mule, and most corrupt in lineage than the Sam'.
وَأَكْثَرَand most numerousعُيُوباًin flawsمِنْthanكُلِّeveryخَلْقٍcreature
And most numerous in flaws than every creature.
وَأَنْand thatيَأْخُذَhe takesبِأَسْوَإِthe worstخِصَالِqualities ofأَبِيهِhis fatherوَأَرْدَىand the basestخِصَالِqualities ofأُمِّهِhis mother
And that he takes the worst qualities of his father and the basest qualities of his mother.
فَتَجْتَمِعُso gatherفِيهِin himخِصَالُthe qualities ofالدَّوَاهِيcalamitiesوَأَعْيَانُand principalالْمَسَاوِئِvices
So there gather in him the qualities of calamities and principal vices.
وَأَنَّهُand thatإِذَاwhenخَرَجَhe turns outكَذَلِكَthusلَمْdoes notيَنْجَعْprove effectiveفِيهِin himأَدَبٌdisciplineوَلَمْnorيَطْمَعْcan hopeفِيforعِلَاجِهِtreating himطَبِيبٌa physician
And that when he turns out thus, discipline does not prove effective in him, nor can a physician hope to treat him.
وَقَدْand indeedرَأَيْنَاwe sawفِيinدُورِthe houses ofثَقِيفٍThaqifفَتًىa youthاجْتَمَعَتْgatheredفِيهِin himهَذِهِtheseالْخِصَالُqualities
And indeed we saw in the houses of Thaqif a youth in whom these qualities gathered.
فَمَاso there wasكَانَnotفِيonالْأَرْضِthe earthيَوْمٌa dayإِلَّاexceptوَهُمْthat theyيَتَحَدَّثُونَwere talkingعَنْهُabout himبِشَيْءٍabout somethingيَصْغُرُthat dwarfsفِيbesideجَنْبِهِitأَكْبَرُthe greatestذَنْبٍsinكَانَthat usedيُنْسَبُto be attributedإِلَيْهِto him
So there was not a day on earth except that they were talking about him regarding something beside which the greatest sin attributed to him seemed small.
وَالْخُلَاسِيُّand the Khulasiمِنَamongالنَّاسِpeopleالَّذِيwhoيَخْرُجُemergesمِنْfromبَيْنِbetweenالْحَبَشِيِّan Abyssinian manوَالْبَيْضَاءِand a white woman
And the Khulasi among people is the one who emerges from between an Abyssinian man and a white woman.
وَالْبَيْسَرِيُّand the Baysariمِنَamongالنَّاسِpeopleالَّذِيwhoيَخْرُجُemergesمِنْfromبَيْنِbetweenالْبُيضِwhite peopleوَالْهِنْدِand Indiansوَيَكُونُand he isمِنْamongأَحْسَنِthe best ofالنَّاسِpeopleوَأَجْمَلِهِمْand most handsome of them
And the Baysari among people is the one who emerges from between white people and Indians, and he is among the best of people and their most handsome.
[مَحَاسِنُvirtues ofالْوَفَاءِ]loyalty
[The Virtues of Loyalty]
قِيلَit is saidفِيinالْمَثَلِthe proverbهُوَhe isأَوْفَىmore loyalمِنْthanفُكَيْهَةَFukayhah
It is said in the proverb: He is more loyal than Fukayhah.
وَهِيَand she isامْرَأَةٌa womanمِنْfromقَيْسِQaysبْنِson ofثَعْلَبَةَThalaba
And she is a woman from Qays ibn Thalaba.
كَانَit wasمِنْamongوَفَائِهَاher loyaltyأَنَّthatالسُّلَيْكَal-Sulaykبْنَson ofالسَّلَكَةِal-SalakahغَزَاraidedبَكْرَBakrبْنَson ofوَائِلٍWail
Among her loyal acts was that al-Sulayk ibn al-Salakah raided Bakr ibn Wail.
فَخَرَجَso went outجَمَاعَةٌa groupمِنْfromبَكْرٍBakrفَوَجَدُواand they foundأَثَرَa trace ofقَدَمٍa footprintعَلَىnearالْمَاءِwater
So a group from Bakr went out and found a footprint near water.
فَقَالُواso they saidوَاللَّهِby Godإِنَّindeedهَذَاthisلَأَثَرُis surely the trace ofقَدَمٍa footتَرِدُcoming to drink atالْمَاءَthe water
So they said: By God, this is surely the footprint of someone coming to drink at the water.
فَقَعَدُواso they waitedلَهُfor himفَلَمَّاand whenوَافَىhe arrivedحَمَلُواthey attackedعَلَيْهِhim
So they waited for him, and when he arrived, they attacked him.
فَعَدَاso he ranحَتَّىuntilوَلَجَhe enteredقُبَّةَthe tent ofفُكَيْهَةَFukayhahفَاسْتَجَارَand sought protectionبِهَاwith her
So he ran until he entered the tent of Fukayhah and sought protection with her.
فَأَدْخَلَتْهُso she made him enterتَحْتَbeneathدِرْعِهَاher garment
So she made him enter beneath her garment.
فَانْتَزَعُواso they pulled awayخِمَارَهَاher head-cover
So they pulled away her head-cover.
وَنَادَتْand she calledإِخْوَتَهَاher brothersفَجَاءُواand they cameعَشَرَةًten of themفَمَنَعُوهُمْand they prevented themمِنْهَاfrom her
And she called her brothers, and ten of them came and prevented them from her.
قَالَhe saidفَكَانَand al-Sulayk wasالسُّلَيْكُal-Sulaykيَقُولُsayingكَأَنِّيas if Iأَجِدُfeelخُشُونَةَthe roughness ofاسْتِهَاher buttocksعَلَىagainstظَهْرِيmy backحِينَwhenأَدْخَلَتْنِيshe made me enterدِرْعَهَاher garment
Al-Sulayk used to say: As if I feel the roughness of her buttocks against my back when she made me enter her garment.
وَقَالَand he said
And he said:
لِعَمْرِby the life ofأَبِيكَyour fatherوَالْأَنْبَاءُand reportsتَنْمِيspread......لَنِعْمَtruly excellent isالْجَارُthe neighborأُخْتُthe sister ofبَنِيthe sons ofعَوَارَاAwwara
By the life of your father and reports spread... truly excellent is the neighbor, the sister of the sons of Awwara.
مِنَamongالْخَفِرَاتِthe modest womenلَمْshe did notتَفْضَحْdisgraceأَخَاهَاher brother......وَلَمْand she did notتَرْفَعْraiseلِوَالِدِهَاfor her fatherشَنَارَاdisgrace
Among the modest women, she did not disgrace her brother... and she did not raise for her father any disgrace.
فَمَاso did notظَلَمَتْwrongفُكَيْهَةُFukayhahحِينَwhenقَامَتْshe stood......لِنَصْلِfor the blade ofالسَّيْفِthe swordوَانْتَزَعُواand they pulled awayالْخِمَارَاthe head-cover
So Fukayhah did not do wrong when she stood... for the sword blade and they pulled away the head-cover.
وَقِيلَand it was saidأَيْضاًalsoهُوَhe isأَوْفَىmore loyalمِنْthanأُمِّUmmجَمِيلٍJamil
And it was also said: He is more loyal than Umm Jamil.
وَهِيَand she isمِنْfromرَهْطِthe clan ofأَبِيAbuهُرَيْرَةَHurayrahمِنْfromدَوْسٍDaws
And she is from the clan of Abu Hurayrah from Daws.
وَكَانَand it wasمِنْamongوَفَائِهَاher loyaltyأَنَّthatهِشَامَHishamبْنَson ofالْوَلِيدِal-Walidبْنِson ofالْمُغِيرَةِal-Mughirahالْمَخْزُومِيَّal-MakhzumiقَتَلَkilledأَبَاAbuأُزَيْهِرٍUzayhir
And among her loyal acts was that Hisham ibn al-Walid ibn al-Mughirah al-Makhzumi killed Abu Uzayhir,
رَجُلاًa manمِنَfromالْأَزْدِAzd
A man from Azd.
فَبَلَغَso reachedذَلِكَthatقَوْمَهُhis peopleبِالسَّرَاةِin al-Sarat
That news reached his people in al-Sarat.
فَوَثَبُواso they pouncedعَلَىuponضِرَارِDiraarبْنِson ofالْخَطَّابِal-Khattabلِيَقْتُلُوهُto kill him
So they pounced upon Diraar ibn al-Khattab to kill him.
فَعَدَاso he fledحَتَّىuntilدَخَلَhe enteredبَيْتَthe house ofأُمِّUmmجَمِيلٍJamilوَعَادَand sought refugeبِهَاwith her
So he fled until he entered the house of Umm Jamil and sought refuge with her.
فَقَامَتْso she stoodفِيinوُجُوهِهِمْtheir facesوَنَادَتْand calledقَوْمَهَاher peopleفَمَنَعُوهُand they protected himلَهَاfor her
So she stood in their faces and called her people, and they protected him for her.
فَلَمَّاand whenقَامَtook chargeعُمَرُUmarبْنُson ofالْخَطَّابِal-Khattabرَضِيَmay God be pleasedاللَّهُwith himعَنْهُ...بِالْأَمْرِover the affair
And when Umar ibn al-Khattab, may God be pleased with him, took charge of the affair,
ظَنَّتْshe thoughtأَنَّهُthat heأَخُوهُwas his brotherفَأَتَتْهُso she came to himبِالْمَدِينَةِin Medina
She thought that Diraar was his brother, so she came to him in Medina.
فَلَمَّاand whenانْتَسَبَتْshe stated her lineageعَرَفَhe recognizedالْقِصَّةَthe storyوَقَالَand said
And when she stated her lineage, he recognized the story and said:
إِنِّيindeed Iلَسْتُam notبِأَخِيهِhis brotherإِلَّاexceptفِيinالْإِسْلَامِIslamوَهُوَand he isغَازٍaway on a raid
I am not his brother except in Islam, and he is away on a raid.
وَقَدْandعَرَفْنَاwe have recognizedمِنَّتَكَyour favorعَلَيْهِupon him
And we have recognized your favor upon him.
فَأَعْطَاهَاso he gave herعَلَىon the basis thatأَنَّهَاsheبِنْتُa daughter ofسَبِيلٍthe road (traveler)
So he gave her on the basis that she was a traveler.
