ثُمَّThenقَالَتْshe said

Then she said:

يَاOمَعْشَرَcompanyقُرَيْشٍof Quraysh

O company of Quraysh,

وَاللَّهِby Allahمَاis notمُعَاوِيَةُMuawiyahبِأَمِيرِthe commanderالْمُؤْمِنِينَof the believers

by Allah, Muawiyah is not the Commander of the Faithful,

وَلاnorهُوَis heكَمَاasيَزْعُمُhe claims

nor is he as he claims.

هُوَHeوَاللَّهِby Allahشَانِئُis an enemy ofرَسُولِthe Messengerاللَّهِof Allah

He is, by Allah, an enemy of the Messenger of Allah,

صَلَّىmay Allah invoke blessingsاللَّهُand peaceعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَلَّمَand grant him peace

peace and blessings be upon him.

إِنِّيIndeed Iآتِيَةٌam coming toمُعَاوِيَةَMuawiyah

Indeed, I am coming to Muawiyah

وَقَائِلَةٌand sayingلَهُto himبِمَاthat whichيُعْرِقُwill make sweatمِنْهُfrom himجَبِينُهُhis brow

and saying to him that which will make his brow sweat

وَيُكْثِرُand increaseمِنْهُfrom itعَوْيلُهُhis wailing

and increase his wailing.

فَكَتَبَSo wroteعَامِلُthe agentمُعَاوِيَةَof Muawiyahإِلَيْهِto himبِذَلِكَabout that

So Muawiyah's agent wrote to him about that.

فَلَمَّاSo whenبَلَغَهُit reached himأَنَّthatغَانِمَةَGhanimahقَدْhadقَرُبَتْdrawn nearمِنْهُto him

When it reached him that Ghanimah had drawn near to him,

أَمَرَhe orderedبِدَارِa houseضِيَافَةٍof hospitalityفَنُظِّفَتْto be cleaned

he ordered a guest house to be cleaned

وَأُلْقِيَand laidفِيهَاin itفُرُشٌfurnishings

and furnishings were laid in it.

فَلَمَّاSo whenقَرُبَتْshe approachedمِنَtheالْمَدِينَةِcity

When she approached the city,

اسْتَقْبَلَهَاmet herيَزِيدُYazidفِيwithحَشَمِهِhis retainersوَمَمَالِيكِهِand his slaves

Yazid met her with his retainers and slaves.

فَلَمَّاWhenدَخَلَتِshe enteredالْمَدِينَةَthe city

When she entered the city,

أَتَتْshe came toدَارَthe house ofأَخِيهَاher brotherعَمْرِوAmrبْنِson ofغَانِمٍGhanim

she went to the house of her brother Amr ibn Ghanim.

فَقَالَSo saidلَهَاto herيَزِيدُYazid

Yazid said to her:

إِنَّIndeedأَبَاAbuعَبْدِAbdالرَّحْمَنِAl-Rahman

“Indeed, Abu Abd Al-Rahman

يَأْمُرُكِorders youأَنْtoتَصِيرِيgoإِلَىtoدَارِthe house ofضِيَافَتِهِhis hospitality”

orders you to go to his guest house.”

وَكَانَتْAnd sheلَاdid notتَعْرِفُهُknow him

She did not know him.

فَقَالَتْSo she said

She said:

مَنْWhoأَنْتَare youكَلَأَكَmay protect youاللَّهُAllah

“Who are you, may Allah protect you?”

قَالَHe said

He said:

يَزِيدُYazidبْنُson ofمُعَاوِيَةَMuawiyah

“Yazid ibn Muawiyah.”

قَالَتْShe said

She said:

فَلَاThen may notرَعَاكَwatch over youاللَّهُAllahيَاOنَاقِصُdeficient oneلَسْتَyou are notبِزَائِدٍan addition

“Then may Allah not watch over you, O deficient one, you are not an increase!”

فَتَمَعَّرَSo changedلَوْنُthe color ofيَزِيدَYazid

The color of Yazid's face changed in anger,

فَأَتَىso he cameأَبَاهُto his fatherفَأَخْبَرَهُand informed him

and he came to his father and informed him.

فَقَالَHe said

His father said:

هِيَShe isأَسَنُّthe oldestقُرَيْشٍof Qurayshوَأَعْظَمُهُمْand the greatest of them

“She is the oldest of Quraysh and the greatest of them.”

فَلَمَّاWhenقَالَsaidيَزِيدُYazid

When Yazid said:

كَمْHow muchتَعُدُّdo you countلَهَاfor herيَاOأَمِيرَCommanderالْمُؤْمِنِينَof the Faithful

“How old do you consider her to be, O Commander of the Faithful?”

قَالَHe said

He said:

كَانَتْShe used toتَعُدُّrecountعَلَىfromرَسُولِthe Messengerاللَّهِof Allahصَلَّىpeace andاللَّهُblessingsعَلَيْهِof Allahوَسَلَّمَbe upon himأَرْبَعُمِائَةِfour hundredعَامٍyears

“She lived during the time of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, for four hundred years,

وَهِيَand she isمِنْfromبَقِيَّةِthe remainder ofالْكِرَامِthe noble ones”

and she is of the remaining noble ones.”

فَلَمَّاWhenكَانَit wasمِنَtheالْغَدِnext day

When the next day came,

أَتَاهَاcame to herمُعَاوِيَةُMuawiyahفَسَلَّمَand greetedعَلَيْهَاher

Muawiyah came to her and greeted her.

فَقَالَتْShe said

She said:

عَلَىUponالْمُؤْمِنِينَthe believersالسَّلَامُbe peaceوَعَلَىand uponالْكَافِرِينَthe disbelieversالْهَوَانُbe disgrace

“Upon the believers be peace, and upon the disbelievers be disgrace.”

ثُمَّThenقَالَتْshe said

Then she said:

مَنْWhoمِنْكُمْamong youابْنُis the son ofالْعَاصِAl-As?

“Which of you is the son of Al-As?”

قَالَSaidعَمْرٌوAmr

Amr said:

هَاHereأَنَاam Iذَاthis

“Here I am.”

فَقَالَتْShe said

She said:

وَأَنْتَAnd youتَسُبُّrevileقُرَيْشاًQurayshوَبَنِيand BanuهَاشِمٍHashim

“And you, you revile Quraysh and Banu Hashim,

وَأَنْتَwhile youأَهْلُare the people ofالسَّبِّrevilingوَفِيكَand in youالسَّبُّis the revilingوَإِلَيْكَand to youيَعُودُreturnsالسَّبُّthe revilingيَاOعَمْرُوAmr

while you are the people of reviling, the reviling originates in you, and to you it returns, O Amr!

إِنِّيIndeed, Iوَاللَّهِby Allahلَعَارِفَةٌam well aware ofبِعُيُوبِكَyour defectsوَعُيُوبِand the defects ofأُمِّكَyour mother

Indeed, I, by Allah, am well aware of your defects and the defects of your mother,

وَإِنِّيand indeed Iأَذْكُرُwill mentionلَكَto youذَلِكَthatعَيْباًdefectعَيْباًby defect

and I will recount them to you defect by defect.

وُلِدْتَYou were bornمِنْfromأَمَةٍa slave womanسَوْدَاءَblackمَجْنُونَةٍinsaneحَمْقَاءَfoolish

You were born of a black, insane, foolish slave woman

تَبُولُwho urinatesمِنْwhileقِيَامٍstandingوَيَعْلُوهَاand upon her mountاللِّئَامُthe base men

who would urinate while standing and over whom base men would mount.

إِذَاWhenلَامَسَهَاtouched herالْفَحْلُthe stallionكَانَتْwasنُطْفَتُهَاher fluidأَنْفَذَmore penetratingمِنْthanنُطْفَتِهِhis fluid

When a man approached her, her discharge was stronger than his.

رَكِبَهَاMounted herفِيinيَوْمٍa dayوَاحِدٍsingleأَرْبَعُونَfortyرَجُلاًmen

Forty men mounted her in a single day.

وَأَمَّاAnd as forأَنْتَyouفَقَدْindeedرَأَيْتُكَI have seen youغَاوِياًastrayغَيْرَnotرَاشِدٍguided

As for you, I have seen you straying, unguided,

وَمُفْسِداًand a corrupterغَيْرَnotصَالِحٍrighteous

and a corrupter, unrighteous.

وَلَقَدْAnd indeedرَأَيْتُI sawفَحْلَthe stallion ofزَوْجَتِكَyour wifeعَلَىuponفِرَاشِكَyour bed

And I saw another man upon your wife's bed,

فَمَاyet you neitherغِرْتَshowed jealousyوَلاnorأَنْكَرْتَobjected

yet you neither showed jealousy nor objected.

وَأَمَّاAnd as forأَنْتَyouيَاOمُعَاوِيَةُMuawiyah

As for you, O Muawiyah,

فَمَاyou were notكُنْتَeverفِيinخَيْرٍgoodnessوَلاnorرُبِّيتَwere you raisedفِيinخَيْرٍgoodness

you were never in goodness nor were you raised in goodness,

فَمَاso whatلَكَhave youوَلِبَنِيto do with BanuهَاشِمٍHashim

so what do you have to do with Banu Hashim?

أَنِسَاءُAre the women ofبَنِيBanuأُمَيَّةَUmayyahكَنِسَائِهِمْlike their women

Are the women of Banu Umayyah like their women,

أَمْorأَعْطَىdid giveأُمَيَّةُUmayyahمَاwhatأَعْطَىgaveهَاشِمٌHashimفِيinالْجَاهِلِيَّةِthe Age of Ignoranceوَالْإِسْلَامِand Islam

or did Umayyah bestow what Hashim bestowed in the pre-Islamic era and in Islam?

وَكَفَىAnd suffices asفَخْراًprideبِرَسُولِthe Messenger ofاللَّهِAllahصَلَّىpeace andاللَّهُblessingsعَلَيْهِof Allahوَسَلَّمَbe upon him

And [it] suffices as a source of pride that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, is among them.

فَقَالَSo saidمُعَاوِيَةُMuawiyah

Muawiyah said:

أَيَّتُهَاO youالْكَبِيرَةُelderly womanأَنَاI amكَافٌّdesistingعَنْfromبَنِيBanuهَاشِمٍHashim

“O elderly woman, I will desist from [speaking ill of] Banu Hashim.”

فَقَالَتْShe said

She said:

فَإِنِّيThen indeed Iأَكْتُبُbindعَلَيْكَupon youعَهْداًa covenant

“Then indeed I bind you to a covenant:

كَانَused toرَسُولُthe Messenger ofاللَّهِAllahصَلَّىpeace andاللَّهُblessingsعَلَيْهِof Allahوَسَلَّمَbe upon him

the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him,

دَعَاprayed toرَبَّهُhis LordأَنْthatيَسْتَجِيبَHe answerلِيfor meخَمْسَfiveدَعَوَاتٍsupplications

prayed to his Lord to answer five supplications for me,

فَأَجْعَلُand I will placeتِلْكَthoseالدَّعَوَاتِsupplicationsكُلَّهَاall of themفِيكَagainst you”

and I will direct all of those supplications against you.”

فَخَافَSo fearedمُعَاوِيَةُMuawiyahوَحَلَفَand sworeلَهَاto herأَنْthatلَاhe would notيَسُبَّrevileبَنِيBanuهَاشِماًHashimأَبَداًever

So Muawiyah feared her and swore to her that he would never revile Banu Hashim again.

فَهَذَاSo this isآخِرُthe lastمَاof whatكَانَtook placeبَيْنَbetweenمُعَاوِيَةَMuawiyahوَبَنِيand BanuهَاشِمٍHashimمِنَofالْمَفَاخَرَةِboasting

So this was the last of the boasting that took place between Muawiyah and Banu Hashim.

وَاللَّهُAnd Allahأَعْلَمُknows best

And Allah knows best.

مَحَاسِنُMahasinمَجَالِسِMajalisأَبِيAbiالْعَبَّاسِAl-AbbasالسَّفَّاحِAl-SaffahفِيinالْمَفَاخَرَةِAl-Mafakhirah
