وَرُوِيَAnd it was narratedأَنَّهُthat he
And it was narrated that when he was killed, may God be pleased with him, the horizons of the sky turned red.
لَمَّاwhenقُتِلَ،he was killed,
when he was killed,
رَضِيَmay God be pleasedاللَّهُGodعَنْهُ،with him,
may God be pleased with him,
احْمَرَّتْturned redآفَاقُhorizonsالسَّمَاءِof the sky
the horizons of the sky turned red
وَاقْتَسَمُواand they dividedوَرْساًwars (a dye plant)كَانَthat wasمَعَهُwith him
and they divided a quantity of wars that was with him
فَصَارَso it becameرَمَاداً،ashes,
so it became ashes,
وَكَانَتْand there wereمَعَهُwith himإِبِلٌcamels
and there were camels with him
فَجَزَرُوهَاso they slaughtered themفَصَارَتْand they becameجَمْرَةًlive coalsفِيinمَنَازِلِهِمْ.their houses.
so they slaughtered them and they became live coals in their houses.
[مَسَاوِئِ[The evils ofالْحَرَّةِ]Al-Harrah]
[The Evils of Al-Harrah]
قَالَ:He said:
He said:
وَلَمَّاAnd whenكَانَthere wasمِنْfromأَمْرِthe matterالْحُسَيْنِ،of Al-Hussein,
And when what happened regarding the matter of Al-Hussein, peace be upon him, took place,
عَلَيْهِupon himالسَّلَامُ،be peace,
peace be upon him,
مَاwhatكَانَwas,
what was,
قَدِمَarrivedعَمْرُوAmrبْنُson ofحَفْصِHafsبْنِson ofالْمُغِيرَةِAl-Mughirah
Amr bin Hafs bin Al-Mughirah arrived
وَكَانَand he hadتَزَوَّجَmarriedيَزِيدُYazidبْنُson ofمُعَاوِيَةَMuawiyahابْنَتَهُhis daughter
and Yazid bin Muawiyah had married his daughter
وَأَعْطَاهُand he gave himمَالاًwealthكَثِيراً،much,
and gave him much wealth.
فَلَمَّاSo whenقَدِمَhe arrivedالْمَدِينَةَMedina
When he arrived in Medina,
جَاءَهُcame to himمُحَمَّدُMuhammadبْنُson ofعَمْرِوAmrبْنِson ofحَزْمٍHazm
Muhammad bin Amr bin Hazm,
وَعُبَيْدُand UbaidاللَّهِAllahبْنُson ofحَنْظَلَةَHanzhalah
Ubaidullah bin Hanzhalah,
وَبَعْدَهُand after him
and after him
عَبْدُAbdullahاللَّهِbinبْنِMutiمُطِيعِson ofالْأَسْوَدِAl-Aswad
Abdullah bin Muti bin Al-Aswad,
وَنَاسٌand peopleمِنْfromوُجُوهِnotablesأَهْلِof the peopleالْمَدِينَةِof Medina
and people from the notables of the people of Medina
قَالُوا:They said:
They said:
نَنْشُدُكَWe adjure you byاللَّهَGod,رَبَّthe Lord ofهَذَاthisالْبَيْتِHouse
We adjure you by God, the Lord of this House
وَرَبَّand the Lord ofصَاحِبِthe companionهَذَاof thisالْقَبْرِgrave,
and the Lord of the occupant of this grave,
أَلَّاwill you notأَخْبَرْتَنَاtell usعَنْaboutيَزِيدَ؟Yazid?
will you not tell us about Yazid?
فَقَالَ:He said:
He said:
إِنَّهُIndeed, heلَيَشْرَبُdrinksالْخَمْرَwine
Indeed, he drinks wine,
وَيُنَادِمُand associates withالْقِرَدَةَmonkeys
keeps company with monkeys,
وَيَفْعَلُand doesكَذَاsuch and suchوَيَصْنَعُand manufacturesكَذَا.such and such.
and does such and such, and behaves in such and such a manner.
فَقَالُوا:They said:
They said:
وَاللَّهِBy God,مَاwe haveلَنَاfor usبِأَهْلِagainst the peopleالشَّامِof Syriaمِنْanyطَاقَةٍpower,
By God, we have no power against the people of Syria,
وَلَكِنْbutمَاit doesيَحِلُّnot become lawfulلَنَاfor usأَنْthatنُبَايِعَwe pledge allegiance toرَجُلاًa manعَلَىuponهَذِهِthisالْحَالِ.state.
but it is not lawful for us to pledge allegiance to a man in this condition.
فَقَالَSaidمُحَمَّدُMuhammadبْنُson ofعَمْرٍوAmrلِأَهْلِهِ:to his family:
Muhammad bin Amr said to his family:
هَاتُواBringدِرْعِي.my coat of mail.
Bring me my coat of mail.
ثُمَّThenخَرَجَhe went out
Then he went out,
فَخَرَجَand went outأَهْلُthe peopleالْمَدِينَةِof Medina
and the people of Medina went out
وَخَلَعُواand they deposedيَزِيدَYazid
and deposed Yazid,
وَأَخْرَجُواand expelledعُثْمَانَUthmanبْنَson ofمُحَمَّدِMuhammadبْنِson ofأَبِيAbuسُفْيَانَSufyan
and expelled Uthman bin Muhammad bin Abu Sufyan
وَبَنِيand BanuأُمَيَّةَUmayyahمِنْfromالْمَدِينَةِ،Medina,
and the Umayyads from Medina,
وَكَانَand he wasعُثْمَانُUthmanوَالِيَthe governorالْمَدِينَةِ،of Medina,
and Uthman was the governor of Medina,
ثُمَّThenقَالَsaidمُحَمَّدُMuhammadبْنُson ofأَبِيAbuجَهْمٍJahmلِأَهْلِto the peopleالْمَدِينَةِ:of Medina:
Then Muhammad bin Abu Jahm said to the people of Medina:
أَطِيعُواObeyأَمْرِيmy commandالْيَوْمَtodayوَاعْصُونِيand disobey meالدَّهْرَ،forever,
Obey my command today and disobey me for the rest of time,
اقْتُلُواkillسَبْعَةَseventeenعَشَرَtenرَجُلاًmanمِنْfromبَنِيBanuأُمَيَّةَUmayyah
kill seventeen men from Banu Umayyah
لَاlestتَرَوْاyou seeشَرّاًevilأَبَداً.ever.
so that you never see evil again.
فَأَبَىSo refusedأَهْلُthe peopleالْمَدِينَةِof Medinaأَنْtoيَقْتُلُوهُمْkill them
But the people of Medina refused to kill them
وَأَخَذُواand they tookعَلَيْهِمُfrom themالْمَوَاثِيقَcovenants
and exacted covenants from them
أَنْthatلَاnotيَرْجِعُواthey would returnإِلَىtoالْمَدِينَةِMedinaمَعَwithجَيْشٍan armyأَبَداً،ever,
that they would never return to Medina with an army,
فَبَعَثَso sentعُثْمَانُUthmanبْنُson ofمُحَمَّدِMuhammadبْنِson ofأَبِيAbuسُفْيَانَSufyan
so Uthman bin Muhammad bin Abu Sufyan sent
قَمِيصَهُhis shirtمَشْقُوقاًtornإِلَىtoيَزِيدَYazid
his torn shirt to Yazid
وَكَتَبَand wroteإِلَيْهِ:to him:
and wrote to him:
وَاغَوْثَاهُ!Alas for help!
Alas for help!
إِنَّIndeedأَهْلَthe peopleالْمَدِينَةِof Medina
The people of Medina
أَخْرَجُواhave expelledقَوْمِيmy peopleمِنْfromالْمَدِينَةِMedina
have expelled my people from Medina,
وَشَقُّواand tornثَوْبِيmy garment
torn my garment,
وَارْتَكَبُواand committedمِنِّي.against me.
and committed offenses against me.
