فَمَرَّSo passedالْحُسَيْنُ،Al-Hussein,عَلَيْهِupon himالسَّلَامُ،be peace,

So Al-Hussein, peace be upon him, passed

حَتَّىuntilنَزَلَhe alighted atمَكَّةَMecca

until he alighted at Mecca

فَأَقَامَand he stayedبِهَاin itهُوَheوَابْنُand the son ofالزُّبَيْرِ،Al-Zubayr,رَحِمَهُmay God have mercy onاللَّهُ،him,

and he and Ibn Al-Zubayr, may God have mercy on him, stayed in it,

وَقَدِمَand cameعَمْرُوAmrبْنُson ofسَعِيدِSaeedبْنِson ofالْعَاصِAl-As

and Amr bin Saeed bin Al-As came

فِيinرَمَضَانَRamadanأَمِيراًas a commanderعَلَىoverالْمَدِينَةِMedinaوَعَلَىand overالْمَوْسِمِthe pilgrimage season

in Ramadan as a commander over Medina and over the pilgrimage season

وَعَزَلَand he dismissedالْوَلِيدَAl-Walidبْنَson ofعُتْبَةَ،Utbah,

and he dismissed Al-Walid bin Utbah.

فَلَمَّاSo whenاسْتَوَىhe leveled / established himselfعَلَىuponالْمِنْبَرِthe pulpit

So when he ascended the pulpit

رَعَفَhe suffered a nosebleedفَقَالَso saidأَعْرَابِيٌّ:a Bedouin:

he suffered a nosebleed, so a Bedouin said:

مَاnotجَاءَنَاhe came to usوَاللَّهِby Godبِالدَّمِ.with blood.

By God, he did not come to us with blood.

قَالَ:He said:فَتَلَقَّاهُso met himرَجُلٌa manبِعَمَامَتِهِwith his turbanفَقَالَ:and said:

He said: So a man met him with his turban and said:

مَاnotعَمَّhe عمّ (covered/encompassed)النَّاسَthe peopleوَاللَّهِ.by God.

By God, he did not encompass the people.

ثُمَّThenقَامَhe stoodوَخَطَبَ،and delivered a sermon,

Then he stood and delivered a sermon,

فَفَانَاوُلُوهُso they handed himعَصاًa staffلَهَاwhich hadشُعْبَتَانِtwo branchesفَقَالَ:and he said:

and they handed him a staff that had two branches, and he said:

تَشَعَّبَbranch out / divideالنَّاسُthe peopleوَاللَّهِ.by God.

By God, the people have divided.

ثُمَّThenخَرَجَhe went outإِلَىtoمَكَّةَMecca

Then he went out to Mecca

فَقَدِمَهَاand arrived at itقَبْلَbeforeالتَّرْوِيَةِAl-Tarwiyahبِيَوْمٍ،by a day,

and arrived there one day before Al-Tarwiyah,

وَخَرَجَand went outالْحُسَيْنُ،Al-Hussein,عَلَيْهِupon himالسَّلَامُ،be peace,

and Al-Hussein, peace be upon him, went out,

فَقِيلَso it was saidلَهُ:to him:خَرَجَHas gone outالْحُسَيْنُ.Al-Hussein.

and it was said to him: Al-Hussein has gone out.

فَقَالَ:So he said:ارْكَبُواMountكُلَّeveryبَعِيرٍcamelوَفَرَسٍand horse

So he said: Mount every camel and horse

بَيْنَbetweenالسَّمَاءِthe heavenوَالْأَرْضِand the earthفِيinطَلَبِهِpursuit of him

between the heaven and the earth in pursuit of him

فَاطْلُبُوهُ.and seek him.

and seek him.

قَالَ:He said:فَكَانَSo the people used toالنَّاسُpeopleيَتَعَجَّبُونَbe astonishedمِنْatقَوْلِهِhis sayingهَذَا،this,

He said: So people were astonished at this saying of his,

فَطَلَبُوهُso they sought himفَلَمْand did notيُدْرِكُوهُ،overtake him,

and they sought him but did not overtake him.

فَأَرْسَلَSo sentعَبْدُAbdullahاللَّهِbinبْنُJaafarجَعْفَرٍhis two sonsابْنَيْهِAwnعَوْناًand Muhammadوَمُحَمَّداًto turn backلِيَرُدَّاAl-Hussein,الْحُسَيْنَ،but Al-Hussein

Abdullah bin Jaafar sent his two sons, Awn and Muhammad, to turn Al-Hussein back,

فَأَبَىbut refusedالْحُسَيْنُAl-Husseinأَنْtoيَرْجِعَreturn

but Al-Hussein refused to return

وَخَرَجَand went outبِابْنَيْwith the two sons ofعَبْدِAbdullahاللَّهِwith him,مَعَهُ،and Amr bin Saeed

and he went out with the two sons of Abdullah with him,

وَرَجَعَand returnedعَمْرُوAmrبْنُbinسَعِيدٍSaeedإِلَىtoالْمَدِينَةِMedina

and Amr bin Saeed returned to Medina

وَبَعَثَand sentبِجَيْشٍwith an armyيُقَاتِلُونَto fightابْنَIbnالزُّبَيْرِ،Al-Zubayr,

and sent an army to fight Ibn Al-Zubayr.

وَقَدَّمَAnd advanced / sent forwardالْحُسَيْنُ،Al-Hussein,عَلَيْهِupon himالسَّلَامُ،be peace,مُسْلِمَMuslimبْنَbinعَقِيلٍAqeelإِلَىtoالْكُوفَةِKufa

And Al-Hussein, peace be upon him, sent Muslim bin Aqeel ahead to Kufa

لِيَأْخُذَto takeعَلَيْهِمُfrom themالْبَيْعَةَ،the allegiance,

to take the allegiance from them.

وَكَانَAnd wasعَلَىoverالْكُوفَةِKufaحِينَwhenمَاتَdiedمُعَاوِيَةُMuawiyahالنُّعْمَانُAl-NumanبْنُbinبَشِيرِBashirبْنِbinسَعْدٍSaadالْأَنْصَارِيُّ،Al-Ansari,

And over Kufa when Muawiyah died was Al-Numan bin Bashir bin Saad Al-Ansari.

فَلَمَّاSo whenبَلَغَهُreached himخَبَرُthe news ofالْحُسَيْنِ،Al-Hussein,عَلَيْهِupon himالسَّلَامُ،be peace,قَالَ:he said:

So when the news of Al-Hussein, peace be upon him, reached him, he said:

لَابْنُThe son ofبِنْتِthe daughter ofرَسُولِthe Messenger ofاللَّهِ،God,صَلَّىmay God send blessingsاللَّهُand peaceعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَلَّمَ،and grant him peace,

The son of the daughter of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace,

أَحَبُّis more belovedإِلَيْنَاto usمِنْthanابْنِthe son ofبِنْتِthe daughter ofبَحْدَلٍ.Bahdal.

is more beloved to us than the son of the daughter of Bahdal.

فَبَلَغَSo reachedذَلِكَthatيَزِيدَYazidفَأَرَادَso he wantedأَنْtoيَعْزِلَهُdismiss him

So that reached Yazid, and he wanted to dismiss him,

فَقَالَso he saidلِأَهْلِto the people ofالشَّامِ:Syria:أَشِيرُواAdvise meعَلَيَّconcerningمَنْwhoأَسْتَعْمِلُI should employ / appointعَلَىoverالْكُوفَةِ؟Kufa?

so he said to the people of Syria: Advise me on whom I should appoint over Kufa?

فَقَالُوا:They said:أَتَرْضَىDo you accept / are you pleased withبِرَأْيِthe opinion ofمُعَاوِيَةَ؟Muawiyah?

They said: Do you accept the opinion of Muawiyah?

قَالَ:He said:نَعَمْ.Yes.

He said: Yes.

قَالُوا:They said:فَإِنَّIndeedالْعَهْدَthe covenant / decreeبِإِمَارَةِfor the governorship ofعُبَيْدِUbaidاللَّهِbinبْنِZiyadزِيَادٍoverعَلَىthe two Iraqsالْعِرَاقَيْنِhas been writtenقَدْinكُتِبَthe register,فِيso appoint himالدِّيرَانِ،over Kufa.فَاسْتَعْمِلْهُappoint himعَلَىoverالْكُوفَةِ.Kufa.

They said: The decree for the governorship of Ubaidullah bin Ziyad over the two Iraqs has already been written in the register, so appoint him over Kufa.

فَقَدِمَSo he arrived atالْكُوفَةَKufaقَبْلَbeforeأَنْthatيَقْدَمَarrivesالْحُسَيْنُ،Al-Hussein,عَلَيْهِupon himالسَّلَامُ،be peace,

So he arrived in Kufa before Al-Hussein, peace be upon him, arrived,

وَقَدْand indeedبَايَعَhad pledged allegiance toمُسْلِمَMuslimبْنَbinعَقِيلٍAqeelأَكْثَرُmore thanمِنْthirtyثَلَاثِينَthousandأَلْفاًmenمِنَfromالرِّجَالِthe people ofمِنْKufa.أَهْلِpeople ofالْكُوفَةِ،Kufa,

and more than thirty thousand men from the people of Kufa had pledged allegiance to Muslim bin Aqeel.

فَخَرَجُواSo they went outمَعَهُwith himيُرِيدُونَwanting / heading towardعُبَيْدَUbaidullahاللَّهَbinبْنَZiyad,زِيَادٍ،Ziyad,

So they went out with him wanting Ubaidullah bin Ziyad.

فَجَعَلُواSo they began / keptكُلَّمَاwheneverانْتَهَوْاthey reachedإِلَىan alleyزُقَاقٍalleyانْسَلَّslipped awayنَاسٌpeopleمِنْهُمْfrom them

So whenever they reached an alley, people among them would slip away

حَتَّىuntilبَقِيَhe remainedفِيinشِرْذِمَةٍa small groupقَلِيلَةٍfew,

until he remained with a very small group,

وَجَعَلَand people beganالنَّاسُthrowing at himيَرْمُونَهُbricksبِالْآجُرِّfromمِنْaboveفَوْقِthe houses.الْبُيُوتِ،the houses.

and people began throwing bricks at him from above the houses.

فَلَمَّاSo whenرَأَىhe sawذَلِكَthatدَخَلَhe enteredدَارَthe house ofهَانِئِHaniبْنِbinعُرْوَةَUrwahالْمُرَادِيِّAl-Muradi

So when he saw that, he entered the house of Hani bin Urwah Al-Muradi

وَكَانَand he hadلَهُfor himفِيهِمْamong themرَأْيٌ،standing / influence,

and he held a high status among them.

فَقَالَSo saidلَهُto himهَانِئٌ:Hani:إِنَّIndeedلِيfor meمِنْwithابْنِIbnزِيَادٍZiyadمَكَاناًa standing / position

Hani said to him: I have a position with Ibn Ziyad,

وَسَوْفَand I willأَتَمَارَضُfeign illnessلَهُ،for him,

and I will feign illness for him,

فَإِذَاso ifجَاءَhe comesيَعُودُنِيto visit meفَاضْرِبْthen strikeعُنُقَهُ.his neck.

so when he comes to visit me, strike his neck.

فَقِيلَSo it was saidلِابْنِto Ibnزِيَادٍ:Ziyad:هَانِئُHaniبْنُbinعُرْوَةَUrwahشَاكٍis ailing / sickيَقِيءُvomitingالدَّمَ،blood,

So it was said to Ibn Ziyad: Hani bin Urwah is ailing and vomiting blood.

وَكَانَAnd he hadشَرِبَdrunkالْمُغْرَةَAl-Mughrah (red dye)فَجَعَلَso he beganيَقِيئُهَا،vomiting it,

And he had drunk red dye, so he began vomiting it.

فَجَاءَSo cameابْنُIbnزِيَادٍZiyadيَعُودُهُ،to visit him,

So Ibn Ziyad came to visit him,

وَقَالَ:and said:هَانِئٌHaniلِمُسْلِمٍ:to Muslim:إِذَاWhenقُلْتُI sayاسْقُونِيGive me something to drinkوَلَوْeven ifكَانَتْwereفِيهِin itنَفْسِيmy life / soulفَاضْرِبْthen strikeعُنُقَهُ.his neck.

and Hani said to Muslim: When I say 'Give me something to drink, even if my life is in it,' strike his neck.

فَقَالَ:So he said:اسْقُونِي،Give me something to drink,فَأَبْطَأُواso they delayedعَلَيْهِ،upon him,

So he said: Give me something to drink, but they delayed.

فَقَالَ:He said:وَيْحَكُمْWoe to youاسْقُونِيgive me something to drinkوَلَوْeven ifكَانَتْwereفِيهِin itنَفْسِي!my life!

He said: Woe to you, give me something to drink even if my life is in it!

قَالَ:He said:فَخَرَجَSo went outابْنُIbnزِيَادٍZiyadوَلَمْand did notيَصْنَعِdo / makeالْآخَرُthe otherشَيْئاً،anything,

He said: So Ibn Ziyad went out and the other (Muslim) did not do anything,

وَكَانَand he wasأَشْجَعَthe bravestالنَّاسِof peopleوَلَكِنْbutأَخَذَتْهُseized himكَبْوَةٌ.a stumbling / hesitation.

and he was the bravest of people, but a hesitation seized him.

فَقِيلَSo it was saidلِابْنِto Ibnزِيَادٍ:Ziyad:وَاللَّهِBy Godإِنَّindeedفِيinالْبَيْتِthe houseرَجُلاًis a manمَتَسَلِّحاً،armed,

So it was said to Ibn Ziyad: By God, there is an armed man in the house.

فَأَرْسَلَSo sentابْنُIbnزِيَادٍZiyadإِلَىtoهَانِئٍHaniفَدَعَاهُ،and called him,

So Ibn Ziyad sent for Hani and summoned him,

فَقَالَ:so he said:إِنِّيIndeed I amشَاكٍ.ailing.

and he said: Indeed I am ailing.

فَقَالَ:He said:ائْتُونِيBring him to meبِهِto meوَإِنْeven ifكَانَhe isشَاكِياً.ailing.

He said: Bring him to me even if he is ailing.

فَقَالَ:He said:فَأُسْرِجَتْSo was saddledلَهُfor himدَبَّةٌa mount / muleفَرَكِبَand he rode

He said: So a mount was saddled for him and he rode,

وَكَانَتْand there wasمَعَهُwith himعَصاًa staffوَكَانَand he wasأَعْرَجَlame

and he had a staff with him, and he was lame.

فَفَجَعَلَSo he beganيَسِيرُwalkingقَلِيلاًa littleقَلِيلاًa littleثُمَّthenيَقِفُstopsوَيَقُولُ:and says:

So he began to walk slowly, then he would stop and say:

مَاWhatلِيhave Iوَلِابْنِand with the son ofزِيَادٍ!Ziyad!

What have I to do with Ibn Ziyad!

فَمَاHe continuedزَالَnotحَتَّىuntilدَخَلَhe enteredعَلَيْهِ.upon him.

He kept going until he entered upon him.

فَقَالَ:He said:يَاOهَانِئُHani,مَاwhatكَانَتْwasيَدُhand / favor ofزِيَادٍZiyadعِنْدَكَwith youبَيْضَاءَ؟white (a great favor)?

He said: O Hani, wasn't Ziyad's favor to you great?

قَالَ:He said:بَلَى.Yes.

He said: Yes.

قَالَ:He said:فَيَدِي؟And my favor?

He said: And my favor?

قَالَ:He said:بَلَى.Yes.

He said: Yes.

فَتَنَاوَلَSo he reached forالْعَصَاthe staffالَّتِيthatكَانَتْwasفِيinيَدِhand ofهَانِئٍHani

So he reached for the staff that was in Hani's hand

فَضَرَبَand struckبِهَاwith itوَجْهَهُhis faceحَتَّىuntilكَسَرَhe brokeجَبْهَتَهُhis forehead,

and struck his face with it until he broke his forehead,

ثُمَّthenقَدَّمَهُhe brought him forwardفَضَرَبَand struckعُنُقَهُhis neck

then he brought him forward and struck his neck.

ثُمَّThenأَرْسَلَhe sentإِلَىforمُسْلِمِMuslimبْنِbinعَقِيلٍ،Aqeel,

Then he sent for Muslim bin Aqeel,

فَفَخَرَجَso he went outعَلَيْهِمْagainst themبِسَيْفِهِwith his sword

and he went out against them with his sword,

فَمَاand he continuedزَالَnotيُنَاوِشُهُمْskirmishing with themوَيُقَاتِلُهُمْand fighting them

and he kept skirmishing and fighting with them

حَتَّىuntilجُرِحَhe was woundedوَأُسِرَand taken prisoner

until he was wounded and taken prisoner,

فَعَطِشَso he became thirstyوَقَالَ:and said:اسْقُونِيGive me something to drinkمَاءً،water,

so he became thirsty and said: Give me water to drink,

وَمَعَهُand with himرَجُلٌwas a manمِنْfromآلِthe family ofأَبِيAbuمُعَيْطٍMueitوَرَجُلٌand a manمِنْfromبَنِيBanuسُلَيْمٍ.Sulaym.

and with him was a man from the family of Abu Mueit and a man from Banu Sulaym.

فَقَالَSaidشِمْرُShimrبْنُbinذِيDhiالْجَوْشَنِ:Al-Jawshan:وَاللَّهِBy Godلَاnotنَسْقِيكَwe will give you to drinkإِلَّاexceptمِنَfromالْبِئْرِ.the well.

Shimr bin Dhi Al-Jawshan said: By God, we will not give you to drink except from the well.

وَقَالَAnd saidالْمُعَيْطِيُّ:Al-Mueiti:وَاللَّهِBy Godلَاnotنَسْقِيهِwe will give him to drinkإِلَّاexceptمِنَfromالْفُرَاتِ.the Euphrates.

And Al-Mueiti said: By God, we will not give him to drink except from the Euphrates.

فَأَتَاهُSo came to himغُلَامٌa servantلَهُof hisبِإِبْرِيقٍwith a pitcherمِنْofمَاءٍwaterوَقَدَحٍand a cupقَوَارِيرَof glassوَمِنْدِيلٍand a napkinفَسَقَاهُ،and gave him to drink,

So a servant of his came to him with a pitcher of water, a glass cup, and a napkin, and gave him to drink.

فَتَمَضْمَضَSo he rinsed his mouthفَخَرَجَand came outالدَّمُthe blood

So he rinsed his mouth and blood came out,

فَمَاand he keptزَالَnotيَمُجُّspitting outالدَّمَthe bloodوَلَاand notيُسِيغُswallowingشَيْئاًanything

and he kept spitting out blood and unable to swallow anything

حَتَّىuntilقَالَ:he said:أَخِّرْهُTake it awayعَنِّي.from me.

until he said: Take it away from me.

فَلَمَّاSo whenأَصْبَحَit became morningدَعَاهُcalled himعُبَيْدُUbaidullahاللَّهِtoلِيَضْرِبَstrikeعُنُقَهُ،his neck,

So when morning came, Ubaidullah called him to strike his neck,

فَقَالَso he saidلَهُ:to him:دَعْنِيLeave meأُوصِي.to make a will.

and he said to him: Leave me to make a will.

فَقَالَ:He said:أَوْصِ.Make your will.

He said: Make your will.

فَنَظَرَSo he lookedفِيatوُجُوهِthe faces ofالنَّاسِthe peopleفَقَالَand saidلِعُمَرَto Umarبْنِbinسَعْدٍ:Saad:

So he looked at the faces of the people and said to Umar bin Saad:

مَاI do notأَرَىseeهَاهُنَاhereأَحَداًanyoneمِنْfromقُرَيْشٍQurayshغَيْرَكَother than you

I do not see anyone here from Quraysh other than you,

فَادْنُso draw nearمِنِّيto meحَتَّىso thatأُكَلِّمَكَ.I may speak to you.

so draw near to me that I may speak to you.

قَالَ:He said:فَدَنَاSo he drew nearمِنْهُ.to him.

He said: So he drew near to him.

فَقَالَHe saidلَهُ:to him:هَلْDoلَكَyou haveفِيinأَنْthatتَكُونَyou areسَيِّدَthe master ofقُرَيْشٍ؟Quraysh?

He said to him: Would you like to be the master of Quraysh?

قَالَ:He said:نَعَمْ.Yes.

He said: Yes.

قَالَ:He said:إِنَّIndeedحُسَيْناًHusseinوَمَنْand whoeverمَعَهُis with himوَهُمْand they areتِسْعُونَninetyإِنْسَاناًpeople

He said: Indeed Hussein and those with him, who are ninety people,

بَيْنَbetweenرَجُلٍmanوَامْرَأَةٍand womanفِيonالطَّرِيقِthe road

men and women, are on the road,

فَارْدُدْهُمْso send them backوَاكْتُبْand writeإِلَيْهِto himبِمَاwith whatأَصَابَنِي.befell me.

so send them back and write to him concerning what has befallen me.

ثُمَّThenأَمَرَorderedعُبَيْدُUbaidullahاللَّهِso he struckفَضَرَبَhis neck.عُنُقَهُ.his neck.

Then Ubaidullah gave an order, and his neck was struck.
