ثُمَّThenقَالَ:he said:

Then he said:

يَاOقَوْمِpeople,لِمَwhyأَطْنَبْتُdid I dwell longفِيinذِكْرِmentioningهَؤُلَاءِthese peopleوَمَاand whatالَّذِيwas that whichهَاجَstirred upهَذَاthisفِيinهَذِهِthisالسَّاعَةِhourحَتَّىuntilخُضْتُyou plungedفِيهِ؟into it?

O people, why did I dwell long in mentioning these people and what was that which stirred up this in this hour until you plunged into it?

أَمَاDid notكَفَانِيsuffice meأَنِّيthat I amقَائِمٌstandingعَلَىonرِجْلِيmy legعَلَىonأَحَدِoneجَنَاحَيْكَ؟of my wings?

Did not suffice me that I am standing on my leg on one of my wings?

قَالُوا:They said:هَذَاThis isلِلسُّكَّرِfor the sugarالَّذِيwhichلَيْسَis notفِيinخِزَانَتِكَyour treasuryمِنْهُof itشَيْءٌ.anything.

They said: This is for the sugar which there is not in your treasury anything of it.

قَالَ:He said:أَجَلْYes,وَاللَّهِby Allah,إِذَاwhenكَانَisوَكِيلِيmy agentمُشْتَغِلًاbusyبِزَوْجَتِهِwith his wifeوَبَنَاتِهِand his daughtersوَمَصَالِحِand the interestsحَالِهِنَّof their condition,مَتَىwhenيَفْرُغُwill he have leisureلِلنَّظَرِto lookفِيintoمَصَالِحِthe interestsخِزَانَتِي؟of my treasury?

He said: Yes, by Allah, when my agent is busy with his wife and daughters and the interests of their condition, when will he have leisure to look into the interests of my treasury?

وَاللَّهِBy Allah,وَاللَّهِby Allah,لَقَدْindeedحُدِّثْتُI have been toldأَنَّهُthat heحَلَّىadornedبَنَاتِهِhis daughtersبِأُلُوفِwith thousandsدَنَانِيرَof dinarsوَقَالَand saidلِزَوْجَتِهِto his wife:اخْرُجِيGo outإِلَىtoالْعُيَادِthe festivalsوَادْخُلِيand enterالْأَعْرَاسَthe weddingsوَسَلِيand askعَنِaboutالرِّجَالِthe menالْمَذْكُورِينَmentionedوَاطْلُبِيand seekالْمَرَاضِعَthe wet-nursesالْمَعْرُوفَةَwell-knownوَالْأَنْسَابَand the lineagesالْمَرْضِيَّةَpleasingلِبَنَاتِكِfor your daughtersوَأَخْرِجِيهُنَّand take them outفِيinالْجُمُعَاتِthe Friday gatheringsيَتَصَفَّحْنَso they may surveyمَحَاسِنَthe beautiesالْغُرَّاتِof the prominent onesوَيَخْتَرْنَand chooseأُولِيthose ofالْأَنْسَابِ،lineage,

By Allah, by Allah, indeed I have been told that he adorned his daughters with thousands of dinars and said to his wife: Go out to the festivals and enter the weddings and ask about the men mentioned and seek the wet-nurses well-known and the lineages pleasing for your daughters and take them out in the Friday gatherings so they may survey the beauties of the prominent ones and choose those of lineage,

أَوَلَمْAnd has it notيُرْوَbeen narratedعَنِfromالثُّقَاتِthe trustworthy onesأَنَّهُمْthat theyكَرِهُواdislikedخُرُوجَthe going outالْأَبْكَارِof virgin girlsفِيinالْجُمُعَاتِthe Fridaysالَّتِيwhichفَرَضَmade obligatoryاللَّهُAllahجَلَّmajesticوَعَزَّand mightyفِيهِنَّin themالسَّعْيَthe strivingإِلَىtowardsذِكْرِهِ؟His remembrance?

And has it not been narrated from the trustworthy ones that they disliked the going out of virgin girls in the Fridays which made obligatory Allah majestic and mighty in them the striving towards His remembrance?

فَنَبَعَSo sprang upقَوْمٌa peopleمِنْfromهَؤُلَاءِtheseالْمُبْتَدِعَةِinnovatorsخَارِجَةٌa Kharijite sectخَرَجَتْwent outوَمَارِقَةٌand a renegade groupمَرَقَتْdeviatedوَرَافِضَةٌand a Rafidite groupرَفَضَتِrejectedالدِّينَthe religionوَأَهْلَand the people ofالدِّينِreligionفَتَرَكُواso they leftمَاwhatفَرَضَmade obligatoryاللَّهُAllahجَلَّmajesticوَعَزَّand mightyعَلَيْهِمْ،upon them,

So sprang up a people from these innovators, a Kharijite sect went out and a renegade group deviated and a Rafidite group rejected the religion and the people of religion so they left what made obligatory Allah majestic and mighty upon them,

فَقَاتَلَهُمُso may Allah fight themاللَّهُAllahأَنَّىhowيُؤْفَكُونَ،are they deluded?

so may Allah fight them, how are they deluded?

اتَّخَذُواThey tookأَحْبَارَهُمْtheir rabbisوَرُهْبَانَهُمْand their monksأَرْبَابًاas lordsمِنْbesidesدُونِother thanاللَّهِ،Allah,

They took their rabbis and their monks as lords besides other than Allah,

وَقَدْand indeedرُوِينَاwe have narratedعَنِfromالنَّبِيِّ،the Prophet,صَلَّىmay Allah invoke blessingsاللَّهُAllahعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَلَّمَ،and grant him peace,مِنْfromغَيْرِother thanوَجْهٍone wayوَلَاnorاثْنَيْنِtwoأَنَّهُthat heخَطَبَdelivered a sermonالنَّاسَto the peopleفَقَالَand saidفِيinخُطْبَتِهِ:his sermon:

and indeed we have narrated from the Prophet, may Allah invoke blessings upon him and grant him peace, from other than one way nor two that he delivered a sermon to the people and said in his sermon:

إِنَّIndeedاللَّهَAllahجَلَّmajesticوَعَزَّand mightyقَدِhasافْتَرَضَmade obligatoryعَلَيْكُمُupon youالْجُمُعَةَthe Friday prayerفِيinمَقَامِيmy stationهَذَاthisفِيinيَوْمِيmy dayهَذَاthisمِنْofعَامِيmy yearهَذَاthisإِلَىuntilيَوْمِthe Day ofالْقِيَامَةِ،Resurrection,

Indeed Allah majestic and mighty has made obligatory upon you the Friday prayer in my station this in my day this of my year this until the Day of Resurrection,

فَمَنْso whoeverتَرَكَهَاleaves itاسْتِخْفَافًاout of belittlingبِهَاitوَجُحُودًاand out of denialبِهَاof itفَلَاthen may notجَمَعَgatherاللَّهُAllahشَمْلَهُhis unityوَلَاnorبَارَكَblessلَهُfor himفِيinأَهْلِهِhis familyوَلَاnorحَجَّpilgrimageلَهُfor himوَلَاnorجِهَادَjihadحَتَّىuntilيَتُوبَhe repentsإِلَىtoاللَّهِAllahجَلَّmajesticوَعَزَّ،and mighty,

so whoever leaves it out of belittling it and out of denial of it, then may not gather Allah his unity nor bless for him in his family nor pilgrimage for him nor jihad until he repents to Allah majestic and mighty,

فَمَنْso whoeverتَابَrepentsتَابَwill turnاللَّهُAllahعَلَيْهِ.in forgiveness towards him.

so whoever repents, will turn Allah in forgiveness towards him.

ثُمَّThenقَالَ:he said:يَاOقَوْمِpeople,مَاwhatالَّذِيis that whichحَرَّكَنَاstirred usعَلَىtoهَذِهِthisالْفَضِيلَةِvirtueفِيinجَوْفِthe middle ofهَذِهِthisاللَّيْلَةِ؟night?

Then he said: O people, what is that which stirred us to this virtue in the middle of this night?

قِيلَ:It was said:السُّكَّرُThe sugarالطَّبَرْزَدُ.Tabarzad.

It was said: The sugar Tabarzad.

قَالَ:He said:أَجَلْYes,وَاللَّهِby Allah,فَمَاso whyأَحْضَرْتُمُونِيdid you not bring meأَلْفَone thousandمِنْofسُكَّرٍsugarإِلَىuntilهَذِهِthisالْغَايَةِ!extremity!

He said: Yes, by Allah, so why did you not bring me one thousand of sugar until this extremity!

أَيَاOنُصْحُNasih,أَيَاOفَتْحُFath,أَيَاOصُبْحُSubh,أَيَاOنَجْحُNajh,تَبَادَرُواmake haste towardsمَوْلَاكُمْyour masterفَإِنَّهُfor indeed heقَدْhasنَصِبَbecome tiredوَتَعِبَand fatiguedمِنْfromطُولِthe length ofالْقِيَامِ!standing!

O Nasih, O Fath, O Subh, O Najh, make haste towards your master for indeed he has become tired and fatigued from the length of standing!

وَاللَّهِBy Allah,لَأَحْسَبُI reckonالثُّرَيَّاthe Pleiadesمُقَابِلَةًoppositeسَمْتَthe zenith ofرَأْسِي،my head,ذَهَبَhas goneوَاللَّهِby Allahاللَّيْلُthe nightوَجَاءَand has comeالْوَيْلُ،woe,وَيْلَكُمْwoe to youأَدْرِكُونِيcatch up with meفَإِنِّيfor indeed Iأُرِيقُdesireنَوْمَةًa sleepوَلَاand there is noبُدَّescapeلِيfor meمِنَfromالْبُكُورِearly risingنَحْوَtowardsالدَّارِ.the house.

By Allah, I reckon the Pleiades opposite the zenith of my head, has gone by Allah the night and has come woe, woe to you catch up with me for indeed I desire a sleep and there is no escape for me from early rising towards the house.

فَبَادَرَتْSo hurriedحَرَمُهُhis womenfolkالْخَاصَّةُspecialفَحَثُواso they urgedالْبَاعَةَthe sellersوَانْبَهُواand awakenedالسُّوقَةَthe market-peopleوَأَخَذُواand tookمَاwhatعِنْدَهُمْthey hadعَلَىwithoutغَيْرِother thanسَوْمٍbargainingوَجَاؤُواand cameبِهِ.with it.

So hurried his womenfolk special so they urged the sellers and awakened the market-people and took what they had without other than bargaining and came with it.

فَقَالَ:He said:مَاWhat isهَذَا؟this?

He said: What is this?

قَالُوا:They said:مَاWhatأَمَرْتَyou orderedبِهِ.with it.

They said: What you ordered with it.

قَالَ:He said:فَهَلْdidأَخَذْتُمُوهُyou take itعَلَىuponالصِّفَةِthe descriptionالَّتِيwhichوَصَفْتُI describedلَكُمْ؟to you?

He said: did you take it upon the description which I described to you?

قَالُوا:They said:نَعَمْ.Yes.

They said: Yes.

قَالَ:He said:فَهَلْdidوَرِثْتُمُوهُyou inherit itوَاسْتَوْجَبْتُمُوهُ؟and become entitled to it?

He said: did you inherit it and become entitled to it?

قَالُوا:They said:لَا.No.

They said: No.

قَالَ:He said:يَاOأَعْدَاءَenemies ofاللَّهِAllah,أَرَدْتُمْyou wantedأَنْtoتُفْسِدُواcorruptدِينِي!my religion!

He said: O enemies of Allah, you wanted to corrupt my religion!

لَاNo,وَاللَّهِby Allah,لَاwill notيَطْمَعُhopeمِنِّيfrom meفِيinهَضِيمَةٍ،an injustice,لَاno,وَاللَّهِby Allah,لَاwill notتَزَالُceaseهَذِهِthisحَالِيcondition of mineحَتَّىuntilتَأْخُذُوهُyou take itبَيْعًاthrough a saleصَحِيحًا،valid,لَاnoشَرْطَconditionفِيهِin itوَلَاnorخِيَارَoptionوَلَاnorمَثْنَوِيَّةًdualityوَلَاnorعَلَىuponحَدِّthe limit ofتَلْجِئَةٍ،compulsion,هَيْهَاتَfar is itيَأْبَىrefusesاللَّهُAllahجَلَّmajesticوَعَزَّand mightyذَاكَthatعَلَيَّ.upon me.

No, by Allah, will not hope from me in an injustice, no, by Allah, will not cease this condition of mine until you take it through a valid sale, no condition in it nor option nor duality nor upon the limit of compulsion, far is it refuses Allah majestic and mighty that upon me.

قَالَ:He said:فَرَجَعُواso they returnedوَسَاوَمُواand bargained withالْبَاعَةَthe sellersوَقَطَعُواand settledثَمَنَهُits priceوَأَخْبَرُوهُ.and informed him.

He said: so they returned and bargained with the sellers and settled its price and informed him.

فَقَالَ:He said:يُوزَنُIt shall be weighedبِحَضْرَتِي.in my presence.

He said: It shall be weighed in my presence.

فَأَتَوْهُSo they brought himبِالْقَبَّانِ.the large scales.

So they brought him the large scales.

فَقَالَ:He said:مَنْWhoيَزِنُwill weighمِنْكُمْ؟from among you?

He said: Who will weigh from among you?

قَالَ:He said:مَنْWhomأَمَرْتَهُ.you ordered.

He said: Whom you ordered.

قَالَ:He said:زِنْWeigh,يَاOنُصْحُNasih,فَقَدْfor indeedدَنَاhas drawn nearالصُّبْحُthe morningوَأَرْجِحْand make it heavyفَإِنَّfor indeedالنَّبِيَّ،the Prophet,صَلَّىmay Allah invoke blessingsاللَّهُAllahعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَلَّمَ،and grant him peace,اشْتَرَىboughtفَقَالَand saidلِلْوَزَّانِ:to the weigher:زِنْWeighوَأَرْجِحْ،and make it heavy,وَاللَّهِby Allahلَوْifلَمْthere were notيَكُنْinفِيthe making heavyالرُّجْحَانِexceptإِلَّاthe fulfillment of the oathتَحِلَّةَfor it would have beenالْقَسَمِin thatلَكَانَwhat callsفِيthe scholarsذَلِكَand juristsمَاin the religion ofيَدْعُوAllahالْعُلَمَاءَmajesticوَالْفُقَهَاءَand mightyفِيto actingدِينِupon it.اللَّهِAllahجَلَّmajesticوَعَزَّand mightyإِلَىtoالْعَمَلِthe actionبِهِ.with it.

He said: Weigh, O Nasih, for indeed has drawn near the morning and make it heavy for indeed the Prophet, may Allah invoke blessings upon him and grant him peace, bought and said to the weigher: Weigh and make it heavy, by Allah if there were not in the making heavy except the fulfillment of the oath for it would have been in that what calls the scholars and jurists in the religion of Allah majestic and mighty to acting upon it.

فَجَعَلَSo beganالْغُلَامُthe boyيَزِنُweighingوَيُرْجِحُand making it heavyوَهُوَwhile heيَقُولُ:was saying:وَيْلَكَWoe to youعَجِّلْmake hasteفَدَاكَmay be ransomed by youأَهْلُكَyour familyقَدْhasدَنَاdrawn nearالصُّبْحُthe morningأُوهْohخَرَجَتْhas departedنَفْسِيmy soulأَوْorكَادَتْ!almost!

So began the boy weighing and making it heavy while he was saying: Woe to you make haste may be ransomed by you your family has drawn near the morning oh has departed my soul or almost!

فَلَمَّاSo whenاسْتَوَىbecame evenالْوَزْنُthe weightخَرَّhe fell downمَغْشِيًّاunconsciousعَلَيْهِupon himمَاnotيَدْرِيknowingأَرْضًاwhether an earthتَوَسَّدَhe made a pillowأَوْorوِسَادًا،a pillow,وَكَذَلِكَand likewiseكَانَتْwasحَالُthe condition ofمَنْwhoeverكَانَwasفِيinمِثْلِlikeحَالِهِ.his condition.

So when became even the weight he fell down unconscious upon him not knowing whether an earth he made a pillow or a pillow, and likewise was the condition of whoever was in like his condition.

فَهَذِهِSo this isيَاOأَمِيرَCommander ofالْمُؤْمِنِينَthe Faithfulحَالُthe condition ofمَنْthe one whoseأَحْمَدْتَyou praisedعِلْمَهُknowledgeوَفَهْمَهُand understandingوَرَأْيَهُ.and opinion.

So this is O Commander of the Faithful the condition of the one whose you praised knowledge and understanding and opinion.

فَقَالَSo saidالْمَأْمُونُ:Al-Ma'mun:قَاتَلَكَMay Allah fight youاللَّهُAllahمَاhowأَعْجَبَwondrous isأَمْرَكَ!your affair!

So said Al-Ma'mun: May Allah fight you how wondrous is your affair!

عَلَىUponكُلِّeveryحَالٍconditionوَاللَّهِby Allahلَئِنْifكُنْتَyou wereوَلَّدْتَinventingهَذَاthisعَنْconcerningأَبِيكَyour fatherفِيinمَقَامِكَyour stationمَاthere is notفِيinالْأَرْضِthe earthنَظِيرٌan equalوَلَاnorفِيinالسَّمَاءِthe heavenشَبِيهٌ،a likeness,وَإِنْand ifكُنْتَyou wereحَكَيْتَrelatingعَنْهُfrom himعِيَانًاby direct observationوَوَعَيْتَand retainingفَلَقَدْthen indeedأَجَدْتَyou excelledالْحِكَايَةَin narrationوَأَحْسَنْتَand did wellالْعِبَارَةَin expressionوَمَاand there is notلِأَبِيكَfor your fatherفِيinالدُّنْيَاthe worldشَبِيهٌ،a likeness,

Upon every condition, by Allah, if you were inventing this concerning your father in your station there is not in the earth an equal nor in the heaven a likeness, and if you were relating from him by direct observation and retaining then indeed you excelled in narration and did well in expression and there is not for your father in the world a likeness,

وَإِنَّكَand indeed youلَتَغْمُرُoverwhelmمَسَاوِئَكَyour evil deedsبِمَحَاسِنِكَwith your good deedsفَلَاso do notتَذْكُرَنَّmentionشَيْئًاanythingمِنْofهَذَاthisبَعْدَafterهَذَاthisالْمَجْلِسِgatheringفَإِنَّfor indeedعَيْبَهُits defectفِينَاin usأَقْدَحُis more damagingمِنْهُthan itفِيinأَبِيكَ.your father.

and indeed you overwhelm your evil deeds with your good deeds so do not mention anything of this after this gathering for indeed its defect in us is more damaging than it in your father.

قَالَ:He said:فَذَهَبَso wentعَلِيٌّAliلِيَتَكَلَّمَ،to speak,فَقَالَso saidالْمَأْمُونُ:Al-Ma'mun:لَاdo notتُبَضِّنَّmoistenلِسَانَكَyour tongueبِحَرْفٍwith a letterوَاحِدٍ.single.

He said: so went Ali to speak, so said Al-Ma'mun: do not moisten your tongue with a letter single.

ثُمَّThenأَمَرَhe orderedبَنِيهِhis sonsبِالْانْصِرَافِ.to depart.

Then he ordered his sons to depart.

[مَحَاسِنِ[The Beauties ofالْبَنَاتِ]the Daughters]

[The Beauties of the Daughters]

قَالَSaidرَسُولُthe Messenger ofاللَّهِ،Allah,صَلَّىmay Allah invoke blessingsاللَّهُAllahعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَلَّمَ:and grant him peace:نِعْمَWonderfulالْوَلَدُare the childrenالْبَنَاتُthe daughters:مُطَلَّقَاتٌdivorcedمُجَهَّزَاتٌwell-equippedمُؤْنِسَاتٌbringing comfortمُبَارَكَاتٌblessedمُفْلِيَاتٌclearingفَالِيَاتٌdelousingمُنَدَّبَاتٌmourningنَادِبَاتٌ.wailing.

Said the Messenger of Allah, may Allah invoke blessings upon him and grant him peace: Wonderful are the children the daughters: divorced well-equipped bringing comfort blessed clearing delousing mourning wailing.

قَالَ:He said:وَدَخَلَand enteredعَبْدُAbdullahاللَّهِibnبْنُal-ZubayrالزُّبَيْرِuponعَلَىMuawiyahمُعَاوِيَةَibnبْنِAbiأَبِيSufyanسُفْيَانَwhile a daughterوَبُنَيَّةٌof hisلَهُwas rollingتَمَرَّغُupon his chestعَلَىso he said:صَدْرِهِRemove herفَقَالَ:from youأَمِطْهَاO Commander ofعَنْكَthe Faithfulيَاfor indeed theyأَمِيرَbring the enemiesالْمُؤْمِنِينَand causeفَإِنَّهُنَّto inheritيُقْرِينَdistant ones.الْأَعْدَاءَSo saidوَيُورِثْنَMuawiyah:الْبُعَدَاءَ.SoftlyفَقَالَO son ofمُعَاوِيَةُ:al-Zubayr,مَهْلًاfor noneيَاtends the sickابْنَnor lamentsالزُّبَيْرِthe deadفَمَاnor benefitsمَرَّضَthe livingالْمَرْضَىlike them.وَلَاSo saidنَدَبَibn al-Zubayr:الْمَوْتَىIndeed I have left themوَلَاmore belovedبَرَّto me thanالْأَحْيَاءَthe sons.كَهُنَّ.And it was narratedفَقَالَthat he said:ابْنُBy Allahالزُّبَيْرِ:I entered one dayقَدْand not oneتَرَكْتُهُنَّwas more hatefulآثَرَto me than themعِنْدِيand I go outمِنَand not oneالْأَبْنَاءِ.is more beloved

He said: and entered Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr upon Muawiyah ibn Abi Sufyan while a daughter of his was rolling upon his chest so he said: Remove her from you O Commander of the Faithful for indeed they bring the enemies and cause to inherit distant ones. So said Muawiyah: Softly O son of al-Zubayr, for none tends the sick nor laments the dead nor benefits the living like them. So said ibn al-Zubayr: Indeed I have left them more beloved to me than the sons. And it was narrated that he said: By Allah I entered one day and not one was more hateful to me than them and I go out and not one is more beloved
