إِنَّIndeed,الْحَجَّاجَal-Hajjajلَمَّاwhenأَتَىhe came toالْمَدِينَةَMedina
Indeed, when al-Hajjaj came to Medina
أَرْسَلَhe sentإِلَىtoحَسَنِHasanبْنِson ofحَسَنٍHasan
he sent for Hasan ibn Hasan
فَقَالَ:and said:هَاتِBringسَيْفَthe sword ofرَسُولِthe Messenger ofاللَّهِ،God,صَلَّىmay God blessاللَّهُHimعَلَيْهِ،and grant him peace,وَدِرْعَهُ.and his armor.
and said: Bring the sword of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, and his armor.
فَقَالَ:He said:لَاI will notأَفْعَلُ.do it.
He said: I will not do it.
قَالَ:He said:فَجَاءَSo al-Hajjaj came withالْحَجَّاجُal-Hajjajبِالسَّيْفِthe sword,وَالسَّوْطِthe whip,وَالْعَصَاand the stick
He said: So al-Hajjaj brought the sword, the whip, and the stick
فَقَالَ:and said:وَاللَّهِBy God,لَأَضْرِبَنَّكَI will surely beat youبِهَذِهِwith thisالْعَصَاstickحَتَّىuntilأَكْسِرَهَا!I break it!
and said: By God, I will surely beat you with this stick until I break it!
ثُمَّThenقَالَ:he said:لَأَضْرِبَنَّكَI will surely beat youبِهَذَاwith thisالسَّوْطِwhipحَتَّىuntilأُقَطِّعَهُ،I cut it into pieces,
Then he said: I will surely beat you with this whip until I cut it into pieces,
ثُمَّthenلَأَضْرِبَنَّكَI will surely beat youبِهَذَاwith thisالسَّيْفِswordحَتَّىuntilتَبْرُدَyou dieأَوْorتَأْتِيَنِيyou bring meبِهِمَا!them!
then I will surely beat you with this sword until you die or you bring them to me!
فَقَالَThe people said:النَّاسُ:The people:يَاOأَبَاAbuمُحَمَّدٍMuhammad,لَاdo notتَتَعَرَّضَنَّexpose yourselfلِهَذَاto thisالْجَبَّارِ.tyrant.
The people said: O Abu Muhammad, do not expose yourself to this tyrant.
قَالَ:He said:فَجَاءَSo al-Hasan cameالْحَسَنُal-Hasanبِسَيْفِwith the sword ofرَسُولِthe Messenger ofاللَّهِ،God,صَلَّىmay God blessاللَّهُHimعَلَيْهِ،and grant him peace,وَدِرْعِهِand his armor
He said: So al-Hasan came with the sword of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, and his armor
فَفَضَعَهُمَاand placed them bothبَيْنَbetweenيَدَيْthe hands ofالْحَجَّاجِ.al-Hajjaj.
and placed them both before al-Hajjaj.
فَأَرْسَلَSo al-Hajjaj sentالْحَجَّاجُal-Hajjajإِلَىtoرَجُلٍa manمِنْfromآلِthe family ofأَبِيAbuرَافِعٍRafi'
So al-Hajjaj sent for a man from the family of Abu Rafi'
فَقَالَand saidلَهُ:to him:هَلْDoتَعْرِفُyou knowسَيْفَthe sword ofرَسُولِthe Messenger ofاللَّهِ،God,صَلَّىmay God blessاللَّهُHimعَلَيْهِ؟and grant him peace?
and said to him: Do you know the sword of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace?
فَخَلَطَهُSo he mixed itبَيْنَamongأَسْيَافِهِhis swordsثُمَّthenقَالَ:said:أَخْرِجْهُ،Bring it out,فَأَخْرَجَهُ.and he brought it out.
So he mixed it among his swords then said: Bring it out, and he brought it out.
ثُمَّThenجَاءَhe cameبِالدِّرْعِwith the armorفَنَظَرَand lookedإِلَيْهَاat itفَقَالَ:and said:
Then he came with the armor and looked at it and said:
هُنَاكَThereعَلَامَةٌwas a markكَانَتْthat wasعَلَىonالْفَضْلِal-Fadlبْنِson ofالْعَبَّاسِal-Abbasيَوْمَon the day ofالْيَرْمُوكِYarmoukفَطُعِنَwhen he was stabbedبِحَرْبَةٍwith a spearفَخَرَقَتِand it piercedالدِّرْعَ.the armor.
There was a mark that was on al-Fadl ibn al-Abbas on the day of Yarmouk when he was stabbed with a spear and it pierced the armor.
فَرَفَعْنَاهَاSo we raised itفَوَجَدْنَاand foundالدِّرْعَthe armorعَلَىjust asمَاwhatقَالَ.he said.
So we raised it and found the armor just as he said.
فَقَالَSo al-Hajjaj saidالْحَجَّاجُal-Hajjajلِلْحَسَنِ:to al-Hasan:أَمَاNowوَاللَّهِby God,لَوْifلَمْyou had notتَجِئْنِيbrought meبِهِitوَجِئْتَand broughtبِغَيْرِهِother than itلَضَرَبْتُI would have struckبِهِwith itرَأْسَكَ.your head.
So al-Hajjaj said to al-Hasan: Now by God, if you had not brought me it and brought other than it, I would have struck with it your head.
وَذَكَرُواAnd they mentionedأَنَّthatالْحَجَّاجَal-Hajjajقَالَsaidيَوْماًone dayلِحَاجِبِهِ:to his chamberlain:اعْسُسِPatrolاللَّيْلَةَtonightبِنَفْسِكَyourselfفَمَنْand whoeverوَجَدْتَهُyou findفَجِئْنِيbring him toبِهِ،me,
And they mentioned that al-Hajjaj said one day to his chamberlain: Patrol tonight yourself and whoever you find bring him to me,
فَلَمَّاand whenأَصْبَحَmorning cameأَتَاهُhe brought himبِثَلَاثَةِthreeنَفَرٍ،individuals,
and when morning came he brought him three individuals,
فَقَالَand al-Hajjaj saidالْحَجَّاجُal-Hajjajلِوَاحِدٍto oneمِنْهُمْ:of them:مَاWhatكَانَwasسَبَبُthe reason forخُرُوجِكَyour going outبِاللَّيْلِat nightوَقَدْwhileنَادَىproclaimedمُنَادٍa proclaimerأَلَّاthat noيَخْرُجَone should go outأَحَدٌanyoneلَيْلاً؟at night?
and al-Hajjaj said to one of them: What was the reason for your going out at night while a proclaimer proclaimed that no one should go out at night?
فَقَالَ:He said:أَصْلَحَMay God rectifyاللَّهُGodالْأَمِيرَ!the Emir!كُنْتُI wasسَكْرَانَdrunkفَغَلَبَنِيso overcame meالسَّكَرُthe drunkennessفَخَرَجْتُand I went outوَلَاwhile notأَعْقِلُ.in my right mind.
He said: May God rectify the Emir! I was drunk so the drunkenness overcame me and I went out while not in my right mind.
فَفَكَّرَSo ponderedالْحَجَّاجُal-Hajjajسَاعَةًa whileثُمَّthenقَالَ:said:سَكْرَانُA drunk manغَلَبَهُovercame himسَكَرُهُhis drunkennessخَلُّواLet goعَنْهُof himلَاdo notتَعُودَنَّ.return to it.
So al-Hajjaj pondered a while then said: A drunk man whom his drunkenness overcame, let go of him, do not return to it.
وَقَالَAnd he saidلِلْآخَرِ:to the other:فَأَنْتَAnd youمَاwhatكَانَwasسَبَبُكَ؟your reason?
And he said to the other: And you, what was your reason?
قَالَ:He said:أَصْلَحَMay God rectifyاللَّهُGodالْأَمِيرَ!the Emir!كُنْتُI wasمَعَwithقَوْمٍa peopleفِيinمَجْلِسٍa gatheringيَشْرَبُونَdrinkingفَوَقَعَتْand there occurredبَيْنَهُمْamong themعَرَبَدَةٌa brawlفَخِفْتُso I fearedعَلَىforنَفْسِيmyselfفَخَرَجْتُ.and I went out.
He said: May God rectify the Emir! I was with a people in a gathering drinking and there occurred among them a brawl so I feared for myself and I went out.
فَفَكَّرَSo ponderedالْحَجَّاجُal-Hajjajفِيwithinنَفْسِهِhimselfثُمَّthenقَالَ:said:رَجُلٌA manأَحَبَّwho lovedالْمُسَالَمَةَpeacefulnessخَلُّواlet goعَنْهُ.of him.
So al-Hajjaj pondered within himself then said: A man who loved peacefulness, let go of him.
ثُمَّThenقَالَhe saidلِلْآخَرِ:to the other:مَاWhatكَانَwasسَبَبُthe reason forخُرُوجِكَ؟your going out?
Then he said to the other: What was the reason for your going out?
قَالَ:He said:لِيI haveوَالِدَةٌan elderlyعَجُوزٌmotherوَأَنَاand I amرَجُلٌa porterحَمَّالٌmanفَرَجَعْتُso I returnedإِلَىtoبَيْتِيmy houseفَقَالَتْand she saidوَالِدَتِي:my mother:مَاI have notذُقْتُtastedالْيَوْمَtodayطَعَاماً،any food,
He said: I have an elderly mother and I am a porter man so I returned to my house and my mother said: I have not tasted today any food,
فَخَرَجْتُso I went outأَلْتَمِسُseekingلَهَاfor herذَلِكَthatفَأَخَذَنِيand took meعَسَسُthe patrol ofالْأَمِيرِ.the Emir.
so I went out seeking for her that and the patrol of the Emir took me.
فَفَكَّرَSo he ponderedسَاعَةًa whileثُمَّthenقَالَ:said:يَاOغُلَامُboyاضْرِبْstrikeعُنُقَهُ.his neck.
So he pondered a while then said: O boy, strike his neck.
فَإِذَاAnd beholdرَأْسُهُhis headبَيْنَwas betweenرِجْلَيْهِ.his legs.
And behold his head was between his legs.
[مَحَاسِنِ[The Beauties ofالْحِلْمِ]Forbearance]
[The Beauties of Forbearance]
حُكِيَIt was narratedعَنْaboutأَنُوشِرْوَانَAnoshirwanأَنَّthatوُفُوداًdelegationsوَرَدُواarrivedعَلَيْهِto himمِنْfromقِبَلِthe side ofالْمُلُوكِkingsفَأَتَوْهُand they came to himوَاسْتَأْذَنُوا،and asked permission,
It was narrated about Anoshirwan that delegations arrived to him from the side of kings and they came to him and asked permission,
فَأَمَرَso he commandedرَجُلاًa manمِنْfromبِطَانَتِهِhis inner circleأَنْtoيَاتِيَهُbring himبِتَاجِهِ.his crown.
so he commanded a man from his inner circle to bring him his crown.
فَأَقْبَلَSo advancedالرَّجُلُthe manبِالتَّاجِwith the crownفَارْتَعَشَتْand trembledيَدُهُhis handوَسَقَطَand fellالتَّاجُthe crownمِنْfromيَدِهِhis handفَانْكَسَرَand brokeوَذَلِكَand that wasبِعَيْنِin the sight ofكِسْرَى.Chosroes.
So the man advanced with the crown and his hand trembled and the crown fell from his hand and broke and that was in the sight of Chosroes.
فَغَضَّSo he loweredطَرْفَهُhis gazeلِئَلَّاso as not toيُرْعِبَهُ.terrify him.
So he lowered his gaze so as not to terrify him.
فَتَنَاوَلَThen tookالرَّجُلُthe manالتَّاجَthe crownوَقَالَand saidلَهُto himكِسْرَى:Chosroes:لَاNoبَأْسَharmعَلَيْكَ!upon you!
Then the man took the crown and Chosroes said to him: No harm upon you!
انْطَلِقْGoإِلَىtoالْحَاجِبِthe chamberlainوَمُرْهُand order himأَنْtoيَصْرِفَdismissالْوُفُودَthe delegationsفِيonهَذَاthisالْيَوْمِ.day.
Go to the chamberlain and order him to dismiss the delegations on this day.
وَحُكِيَAnd it was narratedعَنْهُabout himأَيْضاًalsoأَنَّهُthat heدَعَاsummonedكَاتِبَهُhis secretaryوَعَرَضَand presentedعَلَيْهِto himكِتَاباًa letterوَرَدَthat arrivedعَلَيْهِto himمِنْfromقِبَلِthe side ofأَصْبَهَبْذَthe Ispahbadh ofخُرَاسَانَKhorasanفِيهِin which wereأَخْبَارٌnewsمِنْfromأَخْبَارِthe news ofالتُّرْكِthe Turks
And it was narrated about him also that he summoned his secretary and presented to him a letter that arrived to him from the side of the Ispahbadh of Khorasan in which were news from the news of the Turks
فَجَعَلَso he beganيُؤَامِرُهُconsulting with himفِيهَاregarding itوَإِنَّand thatرَهْطاًa groupمِنْfromخَاصَّتِهِhis intimatesقَامُواstoodخَلْفَbehindسَرِيرِهِhis bedفَتَسَمَّعُواand eavesdroppedعَلَيْهِon him
so he began consulting with him regarding it and that a group from his intimates stood behind his bed and eavesdropped on him
فَعَطَسَso sneezedوَاحِدٌoneمِنْهُمْof themفَالْتَفَتَso turnedكِسْرَىChosroesوَنَظَرَand lookedإِلَيْهِمْat themوَقَالَ:and said:لَاIt is notيَنْبَغِيproperأَنْthatتَسْمَعُواyou listen toسِرَّthe secret ofالْمَلِكِ،the king,وَقَدْand indeedصَفَحْتُI have pardonedعَنْكُمْyouفَلَاso do notتَعُودُواreturnلِمِثْلِto the like ofذَلِكَ.that.
so one of them sneezed and Chosroes turned and looked at them and said: It is not proper that you listen to the secret of the king, and indeed I have pardoned you so do not return to the like of that.
قَالَ:He said:وَقَالَAnd saidرَجُلٌa manمِنْfromقُرَيْشٍ:Quraysh:مَاI do notأَظُنُّthinkمُعَاوِيَةَMuawiyahأَغْضَبَهُangered himشَيْءٌanythingقَطُّ.ever.
He said: And a man from Quraysh said: I do not think Muawiyah anything angered him ever.
فَقَالَSo saidبَعْضُهُمْ:some of them:إِنْIfذَكَرْتَyou mentionأُمَّهُhis motherغَضِبَ.he will become angry.
So some of them said: If you mention his mother he will become angry.
فَقَالَSo saidمَالِكُMalikبْنُson ofأَسْمَاءَAsmaالْمُنَىal-Munaالْقُرَشِيُّ:the Qurashi:أَنَاIأُغْضِبُهُwill anger himإِنْifجَعَلْتُمْyou makeلِيfor meجُعْلاً.a reward.
So Malik ibn Asma al-Muna the Qurashi said: I will anger him if you make for me a reward.
فَفَعَلُوا.So they did.
So they did.
فَأَتَاهُSo he came to himفِيduringالْمَوْسِمِthe Hajj seasonفَقَالَand saidلَهُ:to him:يَاOأَمِيرَEmir ofالْمُؤْمِنِينَthe Believersإِنَّindeedعَيْنَيْكَyour two eyesلَتُشْبِهَانِsurely resembleعَيْنَيْthe two eyes ofأُمِّكَ.your mother.
So he came to him during the Hajj season and said to him: O Emir of the Believers, indeed your two eyes surely resemble the two eyes of your mother.
قَالَ:He said:نَعَمْYesكَانَتَاthey wereعَيْنَيْنِtwo eyes thatطَالَlongمَاwhatأَعْجَبَتَاthey amazedأَبَاAbuسُفْيَانَ.Sufyan.
He said: Yes, they were two eyes that long what they amazed Abu Sufyan.
ثُمَّThenدَعَاhe calledمَوْلَاهُhis freedmanشَقْرَانَShaqranفَقَالَand saidلَهُ:to him:اْعْدُدْCount outلِأَسْمَاءَfor Asmaالْمُنَىal-Munaدِيَةَthe blood money ofابْنِهَاher sonفَإِنِّيfor indeed Iقَدْhaveقَتَلْتُهُkilled himوَهُوَwhile heلَاdoes notيَدْرِي.know.
Then he called his freedman Shaqran and said to him: Count out for Asma al-Muna the blood money of her son for indeed I have killed him while he does not know.
فَرَجَعَSo he returnedوَأَخَذَand tookالْجُعْلَ.the reward.
So he returned and took the reward.
فَقِيلَSo it was saidلَهُ:to him:إِنْIfأَتَيْتَyou come toعَمْرَوAmrبْنَson ofالزُّبَيْرِal-Zubayrفَقُلْand sayلَهُto himمِثْلَthe like ofمَاwhatقُلْتَyou saidلِمُعَاوِيَةَto Muawiyahأَعْطَيْنَاكَwe will give youكَذَاsuch andوَكَذَا.such.
So it was said to him: If you come to Amr ibn al-Zubayr and say to him the like of what you said to Muawiyah we will give you such and such.
فَأَتَاهُSo he came to himفَقَالَand saidلَهُto himذَلِكَthatفَأَمَرَso he commandedبِضَرْبِهِhis beatingحَتَّىuntilمَاتَ.he died.
So he came to him and said to him that so he commanded his beating until he died.
فَبَلَغَSo that reachedمُعَاوِيَةَMuawiyahفَقَالَ:and he said:أَنَاIوَاللَّهِby Godقَتَلْتُهُ.killed him.
So that reached Muawiyah and he said: I by God killed him.
وَبَعَثَAnd he sentإِلَىtoأُمِّهِhis motherبِدِيَتِهِhis blood moneyوَأَنْشَأَand beganيَقُولُ:reciting:
And he sent to his mother his blood money and began reciting:
أَلَاAhقُلْtellلِأَسْمَاءَAsmaالْمُنَىal-Munaأُمِّthe mother ofمَالِكٍ ...Malik...فَإِنِّيfor indeed Iلَعَمْرُby the life ofاللَّهِGodأَهْلَكْتُdestroyedمَالِكاًMalik
Ah tell Asma al-Muna the mother of Malik... for indeed I, by the life of God, destroyed Malik
قِيلَ:It was said:وَجَاءَAnd cameرَجُلٌa manإِلَىtoالْأَحْنَفِal-Ahnafبْنِson ofقَيْسٍQaysفَلَطَمَand slappedوَجْهَهُhis face
It was said: And a man came to al-Ahnaf ibn Qays and slapped his face
فَقَالَ:and he said:بِسْمِIn the name ofاللَّهِGodيَاOابْنَson ofأَخِيmy brotherمَاwhatدَعَاكَinvited youإِلَىtoهَذَا؟this?
and he said: In the name of God, O son of my brother, what invited you to this?
قَالَ:He said:آلَيْتُI swore an oathأَنْthatأَلْطِمَI would slapسَيِّدَthe master ofالْعَرَبِthe ArabsمِنْfromبَنِيBanuتَمِيمٍ.Tamim.
He said: I swore an oath that I would slap the master of the Arabs from Banu Tamim.
قَالَ:He said:فَبَرِّThen fulfillيَمِينَكَyour oathفَمَاfor I am notأَنَاIبِسَيِّدِهَا،its master,سَيِّدُهَاits master isحَارِثَةُHarithahبْنُson ofقُدَامَةَ!Qudamah!
He said: Then fulfill your oath for I am not its master, its master is Harithah ibn Qudamah!
فَذَهَبَSo wentالرَّجُلُthe manفَلَطَمَand slappedحَارِثَةَHarithahفَقَامَso stoodإِلَيْهِto himحَارِثَةُHarithahبِالسَّيْفِwith the swordفَقَطَعَand severedيَمِينَهُ.his right hand.
So went the man and slapped Harithah so Harithah stood to him with the sword and severed his right hand.
فَبَلَغَSo that reachedذَلِكَthatالْأَحْنَفَal-Ahnafفَقَالَ:and he said:أَنَاIوَاللَّهِby Godقَطَعْتُهَا.severed it.
So that reached al-Ahnaf and he said: I by God severed it.
وَعَنْAnd fromإِسْحَاقَIshaqبْنِson ofإِسْمَاعِيلَIsmailقَالَ:he said:حَدَّثَنِيNarrated to meأَبِيmy fatherأَنَّهُthat heكَانَused toيَتَغَدَّىhave lunchمَعَwithيَحْيَىYahyaبْنِson ofخَالِدٍKhalidالْبَرْمَكِيِّthe Barmakidيَوْماًone dayإِذْwhenطَلَبَhe requestedأُرْزَةًa rice dishاشْتَهَاهَاthat he desired
And from Ishaq ibn Ismail he said: Narrated to me my father that he used to have lunch with Yahya ibn Khalid the Barmakid one day when he requested a rice dish that he desired
فَأَمَرَso he commandedالطَّبَّاخَthe cookبِاتِّخَاذِهَاto make itبِدُهْنِwith oil ofالنَّارَجِيلِcoconutفَغَلِطَso made a mistakeالطَّبَّاخُthe cookوَجَعَلَand placedمَكَانَin place ofالدُّهْنِthe oilنَفْطاًpetroleumوَأَتَاهُand brought it to himبِهَا.with it.
so he commanded the cook to make it with oil of coconut so made a mistake the cook and placed in place of the oil petroleum and brought it to him with it.
فَلَمَّاSo whenوَضَعَhe placedيَدَهُhis handفِيهَاin itقَالَ:he said:ارْفَعْ.Lift it away.
So when he placed his hand in it he said: Lift it away.
وَلَمْAnd he did notيَقُلْsayشَيْئاًanythingسِوَىother thanذَلِكَ.that.
And he did not say anything other than that.
