and the man struck him on the head, so the commoner shouted:

Oh, Umar! Islam is gone!

فَأُخِذَSo was seizedالرَّجُلُthe manوَكُتِبَand was writtenبِخَبَرِهِabout his newsإِلَىtoالْمَأْمُونِ،al-Ma'mun.

So the man was seized and news of him was written to al-Ma'mun.

فَدَعَاهُSo he summoned himوَقَالَand saidلَهُ:to him:مَاWhatكَانَتْwasحَالُكَ؟your situation?

So he summoned him and said to him: What was your situation?

فَأَخْبَرَهُ.So he informed him.

So he informed him.

وَأَحْضَرَAnd he broughtخَصْمَهُhis adversaryوَقَالَand saidلَهُ:to him:لِمَWhyقَنَّعْتَdid you strike on the headهَذَا؟this person?

And he brought his adversary and said to him: Why did you strike this person on the head?

فَقَالَ:He said:يَاOأَمِيرَCommanderالْمُؤْمِنِينَof the Faithful,هَذَاthisرَجُلٌis a manمُعَامِلِيwho deals with meوَكَانَand he wasسَيِّءَevil inالْمُعَامَلَةِdealingوَكُنْتُand I wasصَبُوراًpatientعَلَىwithذَلِكَthatمِنْهُ،from him.

He said: O Commander of the Faithful, this is a man who deals with me, and he was bad in his dealings, and I was patient with that from him.

فَلَمَّاSo whenكَانَit wasفِيinهَذَاthisالْيَوْمِday,مَرَرْتُI passedبِبَابِby the gate ofالْجِسْرِthe bridgeفَأَخَذَand he tookبِلِجَامِby the bridle ofدَابَّتِيmy mountوَقَالَ:and said:لَاI will notأُفَارِقُكَleave youحَتَّىuntilتُخْرِجَyou bring outإِلَيَّto meحَقِّي.my right.

So when it was this day, I passed by the bridge gate and he took the bridle of my mount and said: I will not leave you until you bring out my right to me.

فَقُلْتُSo I saidلَهُ:to him:إِنِّيVerily Iأُبَادِرُam hasteningإِلَىtoبَابِthe gate ofإِسْحَاقَIshaqبْنِson ofإِبْرَاهِيمَ.Ibrahim.

So I said to him: Verily I am hastening to the gate of Ishaq ibn Ibrahim.

فَقَالَ:So he said:وَاللَّهِBy AllahلَوْifجَاءَcameإِسْحَاقُIshaqوَمَنْand whoeverوَلَّىappointedإِسْحَاقَIshaq,مَاI would notفَارَقْتُكَ.leave you.

So he said: By Allah, if Ishaq came and whoever appointed Ishaq, I would not leave you.

فَمَاSo I did notصَبَرْتُremain patientحِينَwhenعَرَّضَhe alludedبِالْخِلَافَةِto the CaliphateأَنْthatقَنَّعْتُهُI struck him on the headفَصَاحَ:and he shouted:وَاOhعُمَرَاهْUmar!ذَهَبَGone isالْإِسْلَامُIslamمُنْذُsinceذَهَبَdepartedعُمَرُ.Umar.

So when he alluded to the Caliphate, I could not restrain myself from striking him on the head, whereupon he shouted: Oh, Umar! Islam has gone since Umar departed.

فَقَالَSo he saidللرَّجُلِ:to the man:مَاWhatتَقُولُ؟do you say?

So he said to the man: What do you say?

قَالَ:He said:كَذَبَHe liedعَلَيَّagainst meوَقَالَand spokeالْبَاطِلَ.falsehood.

He said: He lied against me and spoke falsehood.

فَقَالَSo saidالرَّجُلُ:the man:لِيI haveجَمَاعَةٌa groupيَشْهَدُونَwho will testifyعَلَىtoمَقَالَتِهِhis statementيَاOأَمِيرَCommanderالْمُؤْمِنِينَ،of the Faithful,فَإِنْso ifأَذِنْتَyou permitلِيmeأَحْضَرْتُهُمْ.I will bring them.

So the man said: I have a group who will testify to his statement, O Commander of the Faithful, so if you permit me, I will bring them.

قَالَSaidالْمَأْمُونُal-Ma'munللرَّجُلِ:to the man:مِنْFromأَيْنَwhereأَنْتَ؟are you?

Al-Ma'mun said to the man: Where are you from?

قَالَ:He said:مِنْFromأَهْلِthe people ofفَامِيَةَ.Famiyah.

He said: From the people of Famiyah.

فَقَالَ:So he said:أَمَاVerilyإِنَّindeedعُمَرَUmarبْنَson ofالْخَطَّابِ،al-Khattab,رَضِيَmay Allah be pleasedاللَّهُAllahعَنْهُ،with him,كَانَused toيَقُولُ:say:مَنْWhoeverكَانَisجَارُهُhis neighborنَبَطِيّاًa Nabateanوَاحْتَاجَand he needsإِلَىforثَمَنِهِits priceفَلَيْبِعْهُ.let him sell it.

So he said: Verily, Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, used to say: Whoever has a Nabatean neighbor and needs his price, let him sell it.

فَإِنْSo ifكُنْتَyou wereإِنَّمَاonlyطَلَبْتَseekingسِيرَتَهُhis conductفَهَذَاthen this isحُكْمُهُhis rulingفِيconcerningأَهْلِthe people ofفَامِيَةَ.Famiyah.

So if you were only seeking his conduct, then this is his ruling concerning the people of Famiyah.

ثُمَّThenأَمَرَhe orderedلَهُfor himبِأَلْفِwith a thousandدِرْهَمٍdirhamsوَأَمَرَand orderedصَاحِبَهُhis companionأَنْtoيُنْصِفَهُ.do him justice.

Then he ordered a thousand dirhams for him and ordered his companion to do him justice.
