فَفَعَلَSo didعَبْدُAbdulالْمَلِكِMalikذَلِكَ.that.

So Abdul Malik did that.

وَأَمَرَهُAnd commanded himمُحَمَّدُMuhammadبْنُson ofعَلِيِّAliبْنِson ofالْحُسَيْنِAl-Hussein

And Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Al-Hussein commanded him

أَنْthatيَكْتُبَhe should mintالسِّكَكَthe coinageفِيinجَمِيعِallبُلْدَانِcountries ofالْإِسْلَامِIslam

to mint the coinage in all the lands of Islam

وَأَنْand thatيَتَقَدَّمَhe should instructإِلَىtoالنَّاسِthe peopleفِيregardingالتَّعَامُلِdealingبِهَاwith them

and instruct the people to use them in dealings

وَأَنْand thatيَتَهَدَّدُواthey should threatenبِقَتْلِwith the killing ofمَنْwhoeverيَتَعَامَلُdealsبِغَيْرِwith other thanهَذِهِtheseالسِّكَكِcoins

and threaten with death anyone who deals with other than these coins

مِنَfromالدَّرَاهِمِdirhamsوَالدَّنَانِيرِand dinarsوَغَيْرِهَاand others

of dirhams and dinars and others

وَأَنْand thatتُبْطَلَbe nullifiedوَتُرَدَّand be returnedإِلَىtoمَوْضِعِthe place ofالْعَمَلِwork

and that they be nullified and returned to the place of production

حَتَّىuntilتُعَادَthey are remadeعَلَىonالسِّكَكِthe coinage ofالْإِسْلَامِيَّةِ.Islam.

until they are recast into Islamic coinage.

فَفَعَلَSo didعَبْدُAbdulالْمَلِكِMalikذَلِكَthat

So Abdul Malik did that

وَرَدَّand returnedرَسُولَthe messenger ofمَلِكِthe king ofالرُّومِthe Romansإِلَيْهِto him

and sent back the messenger of the king of the Romans to him

يُعْلِمُهُinforming himبِذَلِكَof thatوَيَقُولُ:and saying:

informing him of that and saying:

إِنَّIndeedاللَّهَAllahجَلَّMajesticوَعِزَّand Mightyمَانِعُكَis preventing youمِمَّاfrom whatقَدَرْتَyou were ableأَنْtoتَفْعَلَهُ،do it,

Indeed Allah, Majestic and Mighty, prevents you from what you were able to do,

وَقَدْand alreadyتَقَدَّمْتُI have instructedإِلَىtoعُمَّالِيmy agentsفِيinأَقْطَارِregions ofالْأَرْضِthe earthبِكَذَاwith such and suchوَكَذَاand such

and I have instructed my agents in the regions of the earth with such and such

وَبِإِبْطَالِand with the nullification ofالسِّكَكِthe coinageوَالطِّرَازِand the minting styleالرُّومِيَّةِ.Roman.

and with the nullification of the Roman coinage and styles.

فَقِيلَSo it was saidلِمَلِكِto the king ofالرُّومِ:the Romans:افْعَلْDoمَاwhatكُنْتَyou wereتَهَدَّدْتَthreateningبِهِwith itمَلِكَthe king ofالْعَرَبِ.the Arabs.

So it was said to the king of the Romans: Do what you threatened the king of the Arabs with.

فَقَالَ:So he said:إِنَّمَاI onlyأَرَدْتُintendedأَنْtoأُغَيْظَهُenrage himبِمَاwith whatكَتَبْتُI wroteبِهِwith itإِلَيْهِto him

He said: I only intended to enrage him with what I wrote to him

لِأَنِّيbecause Iكُنْتُwasقَادِراًcapableعَلَيْهِof itوَالْمَالُand the moneyوَغَيْرُهُand other than itبِرُسُومِaccording to the customs ofالرُّومِ،the Romans,

because I was capable of it, while the money and other things were according to Roman customs,

فَأَمَّاas forالْآنَnowفَلَاthen noأَفْعَلُI will not do itلِأَنَّbecauseذَلِكَthatلَاnotيَتَعَامَلُdealبِهِwith itأَهْلُthe people ofالْإِسْلَامِ.Islam.

but as for now, I will not do it because the people of Islam do not deal with that.

وَامْتَنَعَAnd he refrainedمِنَfromالَّذِيthat whichقَالَhe saidوَثَبَتَand was establishedمَاwhatأَشَارَsuggestedبِهِwith itمُحَمَّدُMuhammadبْنُson ofعَلِيِّAliبْنِson ofالْحُسَيْنِAl-Husseinإِلَىuntilالْيَوْمِ.today.

And he refrained from what he said, and what Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Al-Hussein suggested remained established until today.

قَالَ:He said:ثُمَّThenرَمَىhe threwالدِّرْهَمَthe dirhamإِلَىtoبَعْضِsome ofالْخَدَمِthe servantsوَقَالَ:and said:عَلَيَّBring meبِالْخَازِنِ.the treasurer.

He said: Then he threw the dirham to one of the servants and said: Bring me the treasurer.

فَأَقْبَلَSo approachedالْخَازِنُ.the treasurer.فَقَالَ:He said:ائْتِنِيBring meبِالْجَبَلِ.the mountain (or chest).

So the treasurer approached. He said: Bring me the mountain.

فَأَتَاهُSo he brought himبِحُقٍّa small boxفِيهِin itخَاتَمُa ring ofياقُوتٍrubyيَتَّقِدُglowingكَأَنَّهُas if it wereمِصْبَاحٌ،a lamp,

So he brought him a small box containing a ruby ring glowing like a lamp,

فَقَالَand he saidلِلْخَادِمِ:to the servant:ضَعْPlaceلَنَاfor usهَذَاthisعَلَىonهَذَاthisالدِّرْهَمِdirhamالَّذِيwhichمَعَكَis with you

and said to the servant: Place this for us on this dirham which is with you

وَلِيَكُنْand let it beعَلَىatمِقْدَارِthe measure ofإِصْبَعِي.my finger.

and let it be the size of my finger.

ثُمَّThenقَالَ:he said:أَتَعْرِفُDo you knowهَذَاthisالْخَاتَمَ؟ring?

Then he said: Do you know this ring?

فَقُلْتُ:So I said:لَاNoيَاOسَيِّدِي.my master.

So I said: No, O my master.

قَالَ:He said:إِنَّIndeedمَلِكَthe king ofالتُّرْكِthe Turksكَانَwasغَزَاhaving invadedفِيinزَمَنِthe time ofأَبِيAbuمُسْلِمٍMuslimسَمَرْقَنْدَSamarkand

He said: The king of the Turks had invaded Samarkand in the time of Abu Muslim

وَعَلَيْهَاand over itعَامِلٌwas an agentلَهُfor himيُقَالُwho was calledلَهُto himصُبَيْحُSubaihبْنُson ofإِسْمَاعِيلَIsmail

and over it was an agent of his called Subaih ibn Ismail

وَمَعَand withمَلِكِthe king ofالتُّرْكِthe Turksقَائِدٌwas a commanderلِمَلِكِfor the king ofالصِّينِChina

and with the king of the Turks was a commander for the king of China

كَانَwho wasجَلِيلًاillustriousعِنْدَهُwith himعَظِيمَgreat ofالْقَدْرِstatusبِمَنْزِلَةِin the position ofوَلِيِّthe heirالْعَهْدِapparent

who was illustrious to him, of great status, in the position of the crown prince

أَمَدَّهُhe had reinforced himبِهِwith himلِصِهْرٍfor a marital tieكَانَthat wasبَيْنَهُمَاbetween themفِيinسَبْعِينَseventyأَلْفَthousandرَجُلٍ،man,

he had reinforced him with him because of a marriage tie between them with seventy thousand men,

وَإِنَّand thatصُبَيْحَSubaihبْنَson ofإِسْمَاعِيلَIsmailظَفِرَtriumphed overبِعَسْكَرِthe army ofالتُّرْكِيِّthe Turkوَهَزَمَهُand defeated him

and Subaih ibn Ismail triumphed over the army of the Turk and defeated him

وَغَنِمَand plunderedعَامَّةَthe general part ofمَاwhatفِيهِin itوَأَسَرَand took captiveرِجَالَهُhis menكَافَّةًall

and plundered most of what was in it, took all his men captive

وَأَسَرَand took captiveالْقَائِدَthe commanderالصِّينِيَّChineseفِيمَنْamong those whoأَسَرَhe took captive

and took the Chinese commander captive among those he captured.

فَكَانَSo wasهَذَاthisالْخَاتَمُringفِيonإِصْبَعِهِhis fingerفَأَخَذَهُso he took itمِنْهُfrom him

This ring was on his finger, so he took it from him

وَبَعَثَand sentبِهِwith itإِلَىtoأَبِيAbuمُسْلِمٍMuslimفَبَعَثَso sentبِهِwith itأَبُوAbuمُسْلِمٍMuslimإِلَىtoأَبِيAbuالْعَبَّاسِAl-Abbas

and sent it to Abu Muslim, and Abu Muslim sent it to Abu Al-Abbas

فَأُعْجِبَso he was amazedبِهِby itإِعْجَاباًamazementشَدِيداًgreatوَدَعَاand he calledلَهُfor himمَنْwhoيُبْصِرُهُinspects itمِنَfromالْجَوْهَرِيِّينَthe jewelersوَالْمُقَوِّمِينَand the appraisers

who was greatly amazed by it and called for those who inspect it among the jewelers and appraisers

وَسَأَلَهُمْand asked themعَنْaboutقِيمَتِهِits valueفَلَمْso they were notيُحْسِنُواableأَنْtoيُقَوِّمُوهُ،appraise it,

and asked them about its value, but they were unable to appraise it.

فَلَمْSo itيَزَلْcontinuedمَرْفُوعاًkeptفِيinخِزَانَتِهِhis treasuryإِلَىuntilأَنْthatمَاتَ،he died.

So it remained kept in his treasury until he died.

فَلَمَّاWhenأُخْرِجَwas brought outمَاwhatكَانَwasفِيinخِزَانَتِهِhis treasuryمِنَofالْجَوَاهِرِjewelsوَالذَّخَائِرِand treasuresلِتُبَاعَto be sold

When what was in his treasury of jewels and treasures was brought out to be sold

أُخْرِجَwas brought outهَذَاthisالْخَاتَمُringفَنُودِيَand it was called outعَلَيْهِfor saleوَطَلَبَهُand sought itالْمَنْصُورُAl-Mansurوَعِيسَىand Isaابْنُson ofمُوسَىMusa

this ring was brought out, auctioned, and sought by Al-Mansur and Isa ibn Musa

وَتَزَايَدَاand they outbidعَلَيْهِeach other for itفَبَلَغَso it reachedبِهِwith himالْمَنْصُورُAl-Mansurأَرْبَعِينَfortyأَلْفَthousandدِينَارٍdinars

and they outbid each other for it until Al-Mansur's bid reached forty thousand dinars

وَحَرَصَand he was eagerعَلَىtoشِرَائِهِbuy itوَاشْتَدَّتْand intensifiedعَلَيْهِagainst himمُزَايَدَةُthe bidding ofعِيسَىIsaإِيَّاهُhimفِيهِ،in it,

and he was eager to buy it, and Isa's bidding against him for it intensified.

فَلَمَّاWhenرَأَىsawعِيسَىIsaأَنَّthatذَلِكَthatقَدْhadأَغَاظَهُenraged himأَمْسَكَhe held backعَنْfromمُزَايَدَتِهِoutbidding him

When Isa saw that that had enraged him, he refrained from outbidding him

فَاشْتَرَاهُso he bought itالْمَنْصُورُAl-Mansurبِأَرْبَعِينَfor fortyأَفْلَthousand (flawed in source for alf)دِينَارٍ،dinars,

so Al-Mansur bought it for forty thousand dinars,

فَمَاso whatظَنُّكَis your opinionبِشَيْءٍof a thingيَشْتَرِيهِthat buys itالْمَنْصُورُAl-Mansurبِهِذَهِwith thisالْجُمْلَةِsumفِيinذَلِكَthatالزَّمَانِtime

so what is your opinion of a thing that Al-Mansur buys with this sum in that time,

وَكَانَwhileالدِّرْهَمُthe dirhamأَعَزَّmore preciousمِنَthanالدِّينَارِthe dinarفِيinزَمَانِنَا؟our time?

when the dirham was scarcer than the dinar in our time?

فَلَمْSo itيَزَلْcontinuedفِيinخِزَانَتِهِhis treasuryإِلَىuntilأَنْthatوَلِيَbecame caliphالْمَهْدِيُّAl-Mahdi

So it remained in his treasury until Al-Mahdi became caliph

فَأَخْرَجَهُso he brought it outوَوَهَبَهُand gifted itلِيto meمِنْout ofدُونِexclusion ofأَخِيmy brotherالْهَادِي،Al-Hadi,

and he brought it out and gifted it to me excluding my brother Al-Hadi,

وَذَلِكَand that isأَنَّهُbecause heجَعَلَmadeوِلَايَةَthe succession toالْعَهْدِthe covenantلَهُfor him

and that was because he made the succession for him

فَأَرْضَانِيso he pleased meعَنْregardingوِلَايَةِthe succession toالْعَهْدِthe covenantبِهَذَاwith thisالْخَاتَمِringوَبِأَشْيَاءَand with thingsأُخَرَ،other,

so he satisfied me regarding the succession with this ring and other things,

فَلَمَّاso whenوَلِيَbecame caliphالْهَادِيAl-Hadiطَلَبَhe demandedمِنِّىfrom meالْخَاتَمَthe ringفَمَنَعْتُهُso I refused him

and when Al-Hadi became caliph, he demanded the ring from me, so I refused him

وَلَجَّand he persistedفِيهِin itلِجَاجاًpersistenceشَدِيداًstrongوَبَعَثَand sentإِلَيَّto meسَعِيدَSaeedبْنَson ofسَلْمٍSalmالْبَاهِلِيَّAl-Bahiliيَدْعُونِيcalling me

and he persisted strongly in it, and sent Saeed ibn Salm Al-Bahili to call me

فَعَلِمْتُso I knewلِمَادَwhyيَدْعُونِيhe is calling meفَأَخَذْتُso I tookهَذَاthisالْخَاتَمَringوَأَخْرَجْتُهُand brought it outمِنْfromإِصْبَعِي،my finger,

so I knew why he was calling me, and I took this ring and removed it from my finger,

فَلَمَّاso whenتَوَسَّطْتُI reached the middle ofالْجِسْرَthe bridgeقُلْتُI saidلِسَعِيدٍ:to Saeed:انْظُرْLookإِلَىatهَذَاthisالْخَاتَمِ،ring,

and when I reached the middle of the bridge I said to Saeed: Look at this ring,

ثُمَّthenرَمَيْتُI threwبِهِitفِيinدِجْلَةَ.Tigris.

then I threw it into the Tigris.

وَمَضَىAnd wentسَعِيدٌSaeedإِلَىtoالدَّارِthe houseفَأَخْبَرَand informedالْهَادِيَAl-Hadiبِمَاwith whatكَانَwasمِنِّي.from me.

And Saeed went to the palace and informed Al-Hadi of what I had done.

فَبَعَثَSo he sentبِالْغَوَّاصِينَdiversإِلَىtoالْمَوْضِعِthe placeالَّذِيwhichأَلْقَيْتُI castفِيهِin itالْخَاتَمَthe ring

So he sent divers to the place where I had thrown the ring

فَطَلَبُوهُand they sought itأَشَدَّwith the utmostطَلَبٍsearchفَلَمْand they were notيَقْدِرُواableعَلَيْهِ.to find it.

and they searched for it with the utmost search, but they could not find it.

فَلَمَّاWhenصَارَbecameالْأَمْرُthe matterإِلَيْنَاto usبَعَثْنَاwe sentبِالْغَوَّاصِينَdiversفَأَخْرَجُوهُand they brought it outفَهَوَذَاso here it isعِنْدِي.with me.

When the matter came to us, we sent divers and they brought it out, so here it is with me.

ثُمَّThenقَالَ:he said:يَاOعَلِيُّAliأَتْعَبْنَاكَwe have tired youبِذِكْرِwith mentioningهَذِهِtheseالْأَمْوَالِwealth

Then he said: O Ali, we have tired you with the mention of this wealth

وَقَدْand indeedعَوَّضْنَاكَwe have compensated youلِإِصْغَائِكَfor your listeningإِلَيْنَاto usبِخَمْسِينَwith fiftyأَلْفَthousandدِرْهَمٍ.dirhams.

and we have compensated you for your listening to us with fifty thousand dirhams.

فَحُمِلَتْSo it was carriedبَيْنَbeforeيَدَيَّ.me.

So it was brought before me.

وَحُكِيَAnd it was narratedبَعْدَafterذَلِكَthatأَنَّthatهَذَاthisالْخَاتَمَringصَارَpassedإِلَىtoالْمَأْمُونِAl-Ma'mun

And it was narrated after that, that this ring passed to Al-Ma'mun

فَوَهَبَهُso he gifted itلِبُورَانَto Buranابْنَةِdaughter ofالْحَسَنِAl-Hasanبْنِson ofسَهْلٍSahlذِيpossessor ofالرِّيَاسَتَيْنِthe two ministries

and he gifted it to Buran, the daughter of Al-Hasan ibn Sahl, the possessor of the two ministries,

ثُمَّthenصَارَit passedإِلَىtoالْمُعْتَصِمِAl-Mu'tasimثُمَّthenإِلَىtoالْمُعْتِزِّAl-Mu'tazzوَالْمُسْتَعِينِand Al-Musta'in

then it passed to Al-Mu'tasim, then to Al-Mu'tazz and Al-Musta'in,

فَنَقَشَهُso engraved itالْمُسْتَعِينُAl-Musta'inثُمَّthenصَارَbecameكُلُّeveryخَلِيفَةٍcaliphيَنْقُشُengravingعَلَيْهِon itاسْمَهُhis name

and Al-Musta'in engraved it, then every caliph would engrave his name upon it

حَتَّىuntilنَقَصَتْdecreasedقِيمَتُهُ،its value,وَهُوَand itالْآنَnowعِنْدَwithالْخَلِيفَةِthe caliphالْمُقْتَدِرِAl-Muqtadirبِاللَّهِ.Billah.

until its value decreased, and it is now with the caliph Al-Muqtadir Billah.
