وَيُقَالُ:And it is said:إِنَّthatرَجُلاًa manضَافَwas a guest ofامْرَأَةًa womanبِالْبَادِيَةِin the desert
And it is said that a man was a guest of a woman in the desert
وَلِلْمَرْأَةِand the woman hadابْنَةٌa daughterفَقَالَتْso she saidلَهَا:to her:
and the woman had a daughter, so she said to her:
يَاOأُمَّهْmother,لَاdo notتُضَيِّفِيهِlet him be your guest
"O mother, do not let him be your guest
فَإِنَّforالْخَبِيثَthe wicked manعَيْنَهُhis eyeفِرَارُهُ،is his fleeing,
for the wicked man—his eye is his fleeing,
فَلَمَّاwhenأَظْلَمَgrew darkاللَّيْلُthe nightرَاوَدَhe attempted to seduceالْمَرْأَةَthe womanعَنْregardingنَفْسِهَا،herself,
and when the night grew dark, he attempted to seduce the woman,
وَكَانَتْand she wasعَفِيفَةً،chaste,
and she was chaste,
فَقَالَتْso she saidلِأُمِّهَا:to her mother:لَوْلَاwere it not forحَقُّthe right ofضِيَافَةٍhospitalityلَانْقَلَبْتَyou would have returnedمَحْرُوباً،plundered,
so she said to her mother: 'Were it not for the right of hospitality, you would have returned plundered,'
فَاسْتَحْيَاso he became ashamedالرَّجُلُthe manفَوَلَّىand turned awayوَهُوَwhile heيَقُولُ:was saying:
so the man became ashamed and turned away, saying:
تَقُولُSaysأُمُّmother ofعَامِرٍAmirلِلْغَمْرِto the ignorant oneقُلْspeak...
The mother of Amir says to the ignorant one: Speak...
فَإِنْfor ifتَقُلْyou speakفَعِنْدَنَاthen with us isمَاءٌwaterوَظِلٌّand shade
for if you speak, then with us is water and shade
وَلَبَنٌand milkتَنْهَلُyou drinkمِنْهُfrom itوَتَعَلُّand quench your thirst
and milk from which you drink and quench your thirst
أَمَّاas forالَّذِيthat whichسَأَلْتَنَاyou asked usفَلَاthen it is notيَحِلُّpermissible
As for what you asked of us, it is not permissible
وَقَوْلُهُمْ:And their saying:
And their saying:
خَلَاIs clearلَكَfor youالْجَوُّthe atmosphereفَبِيضِيso lay eggsوَاصْفَرِّيand be safe
The coast is clear for you, so lay eggs and be safe
وَنَقِّرِيand peckمَاwhatشِئْتِyou wishأَنْtoتُنَقِّرِيpeck
and peck whatever you wish to peck
قَدْhas beenرُفِعَliftedالْفَخُّthe trapفَمَاذَاso whatتَحْذَرِيdo you fear
the trap has been lifted, so what do you fear
قِيلَ:It was said:كَانَwasطَرَفَةُTarafahبْنُson ofالْعَبْدِAl-AbdالْبَكْرِيُّAl-Bakri
It was said: Tarafah ibn al-Abd al-Bakri was
مَعَwithعَمِّهِhis paternal uncleوَهُوَwhile he wasصَغِيرٌyoungفِيinبَعْضِsomeأَسْفَارِهِمَاof their travels
with his uncle while he was young in some of their travels,
فَنَزَلَاso they alightedعَلَىatمَاءٍwaterفَنَصَبَand Tarafah set upطَرَفَةُTarafahفَخَّهُhis trapلِلْقَنَابِرِfor the larks
so they alighted at a watering place, and Tarafah set up his trap for the larks
وَقَعَدَand satلَهَاwaiting for themوَهُنَّwhile theyيَحْذَرْنَwere wary ofالْفَخَّthe trapوَيَنْفِرْنَand shying away fromمِمَّاwhateverحَوْلَهُ،was around it,
and waited for them while they were wary of the trap and shying away from whatever was around it,
فَقَالَ:so he said:
so he said:
قَاتَلَكُنَّMay God fight youاللَّهُGodمِنْofقَنَابِرَlarks
May God fight you as larks,
مُنْتَبِذَاتٍkeeping apartفِيinالْفَلَاthe wastelandنَوَافِرَshy
keeping apart in the wilderness, shy.
وَأَخَذَAnd he tookفَخَّهُhis trapوَرَجَعَand returnedإِلَىtoعَمِّهِ.his uncle.
And he took his trap and returned to his uncle.
فَلَمَّاWhenتَحَمَّلُواthey loaded their baggageأَقْبَلَتِcameالْقَنَابِرُthe larksتَلْتَقِطُpicking upمَاwhatكَانَwasأَلْقَاهُhe had castلَهُنَّfor themمِنَofالْحَبِّ،grain,
When they loaded their baggage, the larks came picking up what he had cast for them of grain,
فَالْتَفَتَso he turned aroundفَرَآهُنَّand saw themفَقَالَ:and said:
so he turned around and saw them and said:
يَاOلَكِto youمِنْfromحُمَّرَةٍred larkبِمَعْمَرٍdwelling in a place
O what a red lark in a dwelling place,
خَلَاIs clearلَكِfor youالْجَوُّthe atmosphereفَبِيضِيso lay eggsوَاصْفَرِّيand be safe
the coast is clear for you, so lay eggs and be safe,
وَنَقِّرِيand peckمَاwhatشِئْتِyou wishأَنْtoتُنَقِّرِيpeck
and peck whatever you wish to peck.
وَقَوْلُهُمْ:And their saying:لَوْIfتُرِكَwas leftالْقَطَاthe sandgrouseلَنَامَ،it would have slept,
And their saying: If the sandgrouse had been left alone, it would have slept:
كَانَتْwasحُذَامِHuzamبِنْتُdaughter ofالرَّيَّانِAl-Rayyanمَلِكَking ofمَعَدٍّMa'add
Huzam was the daughter of Al-Rayyan, king of Ma'add,
وَإِنَّand thatرَجُلاًa manمِنْfromحِمْيَرَHimyarسَارَmarchedإِلَىtoأَبِيهِher fatherفِيwithحِمْيَرَ،Himyar,
and a man from Himyar marched against her father with Himyar,
فَلَقِيَهُمُso met themالرَّيَّانُAl-Rayyanفِيinأَحْيَاءِtribes ofرَبِيعَةَRabi'ah
so Al-Rayyan met them in the settlements of Rabi'ah,
فَالْتَقَوْاand they metفِيinأَرْضٍa landتُدْعَىcalledالْمَرَامَةَAl-Maramah
and they met in a land called Al-Maramah,
فَاقْتَتَلُواand they foughtيَوْمَيْنِtwo daysوَلَيْلَتَيْنِand two nights
and they fought for two days and two nights,
ثُمَّthenرَجَعَreturnedالْحِمْيَرِيُّthe Himyariteإِلَىtoعَسْكَرِهِhis campوَهَرَبَand fledالرَّيَّانُAl-Rayyan
then the Himyarite returned to his camp and Al-Rayyan fled
وَسَارَand traveledيَوْمَهُhis dayوَلَيْلَتَهُ،and his night,
and traveled all day and all night,
فَلَمَّاwhenأَصْبَحَdawnedالْحِمْيَرِيُّthe Himyariteوَرَأَىand sawعَسْكَرَthe camp ofالرَّيَّانِAl-Rayyan
and when morning came and the Himyarite saw Al-Rayyan's camp empty,
سَارَhe marchedفِيinطَلَبِهِ،pursuit of him,
he marched in pursuit of him,
وَجَعَلُواand they beganيَمُرُّونَpassingوَيُثِيرُونَand flushingالْقَطَاthe sandgrouse
and they began passing and flushing the sandgrouse,
وَجَعَلَتِand beganالْقَطَاthe sandgrouseتَمُرُّpassingعَلَىoverعَسْكَرِthe camp ofالرَّيَّانِ،Al-Rayyan,
and the sandgrouse began passing over Al-Rayyan's camp,
فَانْتَبَهَتْso woke upابْنَتُهُhis daughterفَقَالَتْand saidلِقَوْمِهَا:to her people:
so his daughter woke up and said to her people:
أَلَاAhيَاOقَوْمَنَاour peopleارْتَحِلُواdepartوَسِيرُواand travel
O our people, depart and travel,
فَلَوْfor hadتُرِكَbeen leftالْقَطَاthe sandgrouseلَيْلاًat nightلَنَامَاit would have slept
for had the sandgrouse been left at night, it would have slept.
فَارْتَحَلُواSo they departedوَاعْتَصَمُواand took refugeبِرُؤُوسِat the peaks ofالْجِبَالِthe mountainsوَرَجَعَand returnedالْقَوْمُ،the people,
So they departed and took refuge at the mountain peaks, and the people returned,
فَفِيand concerningذَلِكَthatيَقُولُsaysحُمَيْدٌ:Humaid:
and concerning that, Humaid says:
إِذَاWhenقَالَتْsaidحُذَامِHuzamفَصَدِّقُوهَاthen believe her
When Huzam speaks, then believe her,
فَإِنَّforالْقَوْلَthe speechمَاis whatقَالَتْsaidحُذَامِHuzam.
for the true speech is what Huzam says.
[مَحَاسِنِ[Beauties ofالْجَوَابِ]the Answer]

قِيلَ:It was said:دَخَلَenteredرَجُلٌa manعَلَىuponكِسْرَىKisraأَبْرَوِيزَAparviz
It was said: A man entered upon Kisra Aparviz
فَشَكَاand complained aboutعَامِلاًan agentلَهُof hisغَصَبَهُwho had seized by forceعَلَىfrom himضَيْعَةٍan estateلَهُ.of his.
and complained about an agent of his who had seized an estate of his by force.
قَالَSaidكِسْرَى:Kisra:مُنْذُSinceكَمْhow longهِيَis itفِيinيَدِكَ؟your hand?
Kisra said: How long has it been in your hand? He said: For forty years.
قَالَ:He said:مُنْذُForأَرْبَعِينَfortyسَنَةً.years.
He said: For forty years.
فَقَالَ:So he said:أَنْتَyouتَأْكُلُهَاhave been eating from itمُنْذُforأَرْبَعِينَfortyسَنَةًyears
He said: You have been enjoying its produce for forty years,
مَاwhatعَلَيْكَis it against youأَنْthatيَأْكُلَshould eatمِنْهَاfrom itعَامِلِيmy agentسَنَةً!for a year!
what harm is it to you if my agent eats from it for a year!
فَقَالَ:He said:مَاwhatكَانَwasعَلَىuponالْمَلِكِthe kingأَنْthatيَأْكُلَshould eatبَهْرَامُBahramجُوبِينَJubinالْمَلِكَthe kingسَنَةًfor a yearوَاحِدَةً!one!
He said: What was it against the king that King Bahram Jubin ate for one single year! [referring to his usurpation of the throne]
فَقَالَ:So he said:ادْفَعُواPushفِيinقَفَاهُthe back of his neckوَاخْرِجُوهُ.and put him out.
So he said: Shove him by the back of his neck and put him out.
فَأُخْرِجَ،So he was put out,فَأَمْكَنَتْهُand he was able to makeالْتِفَاتَةٌa glance backفَقَالَ:and he said:
So he was put out, and as he glanced back he said:
دَخَلْتُI enteredبِمَظْلَمَةٍwith one grievanceوَخَرَجْتُand I leftبِثِنْتَيْنِ.with two.
I entered with one grievance and left with two.
فَقَالَSo saidكِسْرَى:Kisra:رُدُّوهُ،Bring him back,وَأَمَرَand he orderedبِرَدِّthe return ofضَيْعَتِهِhis estateوَجَعَلَهُand placed himفِيamongخَاصَّتِهِ.his intimates.
So Kisra said: Bring him back. And he ordered his estate to be returned to him and placed him among his close intimates.
وَيُقَالُ:And it is said:إِنَّthatسَعِيدَSaeedبْنَson ofمَرَّةَMarrahالْكِنْدِيَّAl-Kindi
And it is said that Saeed ibn Marrah Al-Kindi,
حِينَwhenأَتَىhe came toمُعَاوِيَةَMuawiyahقَالَhe saidلَهُ:to him:
when he came to Muawiyah, he said to him:
أَنْتَYou areسَعِيدٌ؟Saeed (Happy)?
"Are you Saeed?"
فَقَالَ:So he said:أَمِيرُThe Commander ofالْمُؤْمِنِينَthe Faithfulسَعِيدٌis Saeedوَأَنَاand I amابْنُthe son ofمَرَّةً.Marrah (Bitterness).
He said: The Commander of the Faithful is Saeed (happy), and I am the son of Marrah (bitterness).
قِيلَ:It was said:وَدَخَلَand enteredالسَّيِّدُAl-Sayyidبْنُson ofأَنَسٍAnasالْأَزْدِيُّAl-Azdi
It was said: Al-Sayyid ibn Anas Al-Azdi entered
عَلَىuponالْمَأْمُونِAl-Ma'munفَقَالَ:and he said:
upon Al-Ma'mun, and he said:
أَنْتَYou areالسَّيِّدُ؟Al-Sayyid (The Master)?
"Are you Al-Sayyid?"
فَقَالَ:So he said:أَنْتَYou areالسَّيِّدُthe masterيَاOأَمِيرَCommander ofالْمُؤْمِنِينَthe Faithfulوَأَنَاand I amابْنُthe son ofأَنَسٍ.Anas.
He said: You are the master, O Commander of the Faithful, and I am the son of Anas.
وَقِيلَAnd it was saidلِلْعَبَّاسِto Al-Abbasبْنِson ofعَبْدِAbdالْمُطَّلِبِ:Al-Muttalib:
And it was said to Al-Abbas ibn Abd Al-Muttalib:
أَنْتَAre youأَكْبَرُolderأَمْorرَسُولُthe Messenger ofاللَّهِ،God,صَلَّىmay God's blessingsاللَّهُbeعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَلَّمَ؟and peace?
"Are you older or is the Messenger of God, may God's blessings and peace be upon him?"
فَقَالَ:So he said:هُوَ،He,عَلَيْهِupon himالسَّلَامُ،be peace,أَكْبَرُis olderمَنِّيthan meوَوُلِدْتُand I was bornقَبْلَهُ.before him.
He said: He, upon him be peace, is older than me, and I was born before him.
وَقِيلَ:And it was said:إِنَّهُthat heقَالَsaidوَأَنَاand I amأَسَنُّmore advanced in yearsمِنْهُ.than him.
And it was said that he said: And I am older in years than him.
قِيلَ:It was said:وَقَالَand saidالْحَجَّاجُAl-Hajjajلِلْمُهَلَّبِ:to Al-Muhallab:
It was said: Al-Hajjaj said to Al-Muhallab:
أَنَاAm Iأَطْوَلُtallerأَمْorأَنْتَ؟are you?
"Am I taller or are you?"
فَقَالَ:So he said:الْأَمِيرُThe Amirأَطْوَلُis tallerوَأَنَاand I amأَبْسَطُbroaderقَامَةً.in stature.
He said: The Amir is taller, and I am of broader stature.
قَالَ:He said:وَوَقَفَand stoppedالْمَهْدِيُّAl-Mahdiعَلَىbyامْرَأَةٍa womanمِنْfromبَنِيBaniتُعْلٍTu'l
He said: Al-Mahdi stopped by a woman from the tribe of Tu'l
فَقَالَand saidلَهَا:to her:مِمَّنِFrom whomالْعَجُوزُ؟is the old woman?
and said to her: "To whom does the old woman belong?"
قَالَتْ:She said:مِنْFromطَيِّئٍ.Tayy.
She said: From Tayy.
قَالَ:He said:مَاWhatمَنَعَpreventedطَيِّئاًTayyأَنْthatيَكُونَthere should beفِيهَاin itآخَرُanother manمِثْلُlikeحَاتِمٍ؟Hatim?
He said: What prevented Tayy from having another man like Hatim?
فَقَالَتْ:So she said:الَّذِيThat whichمَنَعَpreventedالْعَرَبَthe Arabsأَنْthatيَكُونَthere should beفِيهَاin themآخَرُanotherمِثْلُكَ.like you.
She said: That which prevented the Arabs from having another like you.
فَأُعْجِبَSo he was pleasedبِقَوْلِهَاby her statementوَوَصَلَهَا.and rewarded her.
So he was pleased with her statement and rewarded her.
قَالَ:He said:وَقَدِمَAnd cameوَفْدٌa delegationمِنَfromالْعِرَاقِIraqعَلَىtoعُمَرَUmarبْنِson ofعَبْدِAbdالْعَزِيزِ،Al-Aziz,
He said: A delegation from Iraq came to Umar ibn Abd Al-Aziz,
فَنَظَرَand lookedعُمَرُUmarإِلَىatشَابٍّa young manفِيهِمْamong themيُرِيدُwho wantedالْكَلَامَ،to speak,
and Umar looked at a young man among them who wanted to speak,
فَقَالَso saidعُمَرُ:Umar:لِيَوَلِLet take chargeالْأَسْنَانِthe elders
so Umar said: "Let the elders speak first."
فَقَالَSo saidالْفَتَى:the youth:يَاOأَمِيرَCommander ofالْمُؤْمِنِينَthe Faithful,
So the youth said: "O Commander of the Faithful,
إِنَّindeedالْأَمْرَthe matterلَيْسَis notبِالسِّنِّby age
matters are not determined by age;
وَلَوْfor hadكَانَit beenذَلِكَsoلَكَانَthere would have beenفِيamongالْمُسْلِمِينَthe Muslimsمَنْsomeone whoهُوَheأَسَنُّolderمِنْكَ،than you,
had it been so, there would have been among the Muslims someone older than you,
فَقَالَ:so he said:صَدَقْتَ،You have spoken the truth,تَكَلَّمْ.speak.
so he said: You have spoken the truth, speak.
قَالَ:He said:يَاOأَمِيرَCommander ofالْمُؤْمِنِينَthe Faithful,إِنَّاverily weلَمْhave notنَأْتِكَcome to youرَغْبَةًout of desireوَلَاnorرَهْبَةً،out of fear,
He said: O Commander of the Faithful, we have not come to you out of desire nor out of fear;
أَمَّاas forالرَّغْبَةُthe desireفَقَدِمْتَfor you have comeعَلَيْنَاto usفِيinبِلَادِنَا،our land,
as for desire, you have come to us in our land [with your justice],
وَأَمَّاand as forالرَّهْبَةُthe fearفَقَدْhasآمَنَنَاsecured usاللَّهُGodبِعَدْلِكَby your justiceمِنْfromجَوْرِكَ.your tyranny.
and as for fear, God has secured us by your justice from your tyranny.
قَالَ:He said:فَمَاthen whatأَنْتُمْ؟are you?
He said: Then who are you?
قَالَ:He said:وَفْدُThe delegation ofالشُّكْرِ.gratitude.
He said: The delegation of gratitude.
قَالَ:He said:لِلَّهِTo Godأَنْتَyou belongمَاhowأَحْسَنَexcellentمَنْطِقَكَ!is your logic!
He said: Marvelous is you and how excellent is your logic!
وَقِيلَ:And it was said:إِنَّهُthatلَمَّاwhenاسْتَوْسَقَbecame stableأَمْرُthe affair ofالْعِرَاقِIraqلِعَبْدِfor AbdullahاللَّهِibnبْنِAl-Zubairالزُّبَيْرِhe directed
And it was said that when the affairs of Iraq stabilized for Abdullah ibn Al-Zubair, he directed
وَجَّهَhe sentمُصْعَبٌMus'abإِلَيْهِto himوَفْداً،a delegation,
Mus'ab sent a delegation to him,
فَلَمَّاand whenقَدِمَarrivedعَلَيْهِto himالْوَفْدُthe delegationقَالَ:he said:وَدَدْتُI wishأَنَّthatلِيto meبِكُلِّfor everyخَمْسَةٍfiveمِنْكُمْof youرَجُلاًone manمِنْهُمْ.of them [the Syrians].
and when the delegation arrived to him, he said: I wish I had for every five of you one man of them.
فَقَالَSo saidرَجُلٌa manمِنْfromأَهْلِthe people ofالشَّامِ:Sham:بَلْNayوَدَدْتُI wishأَنَّthatلِيto meبِكُلِّfor everyعَشَرَةٍtenمِنْكُمْof youرَجُلاًone manمِنْهُمْ.of them.
So a man from the people of Syria said: Nay, I wish I had for every ten of you one man of them.
فَقَالَSo saidرَجُلٌa manمِنْfromأَهْلِthe people ofالْعِرَاقِ:Iraq:يَاOأَمِيرَCommander ofالْمُؤْمِنِينَthe Faithful,
So a man from the people of Iraq said: O Commander of the Faithful,
عَلِقْنَاكَwe clung to youوَعَلِقَتْand clungبِأَهْلِto the people ofالشَّامِShamوَعَلِقَand clungأَهْلُthe people ofالشَّامِShamآلَto the family ofمَرْوَانَ،Marwan,
we clung to you, and you clung to the people of Syria, and the people of Syria clung to the family of Marwan,
فَمَاsoأَعْرِفُI knowلَنَاfor usوَلَكَand for youمَثَلاًan exampleإِلَّاexceptقَوْلَthe saying ofالْأَعْشَى:Al-A'sha:
so I know no example for us and you except the saying of Al-A'sha:
عَلِقْتُهَاI became attached to herعَرْضاًcasuallyوَعَلِقَتْand she became attached toرَجُلاًa man
I became attached to her casually, and she became attached to a man
غَيْرِيother than meوَعُلِّقَand was attachedأُخْرَىto another womanغَيْرَهَاother than herالرَّجُلُthe man.
other than me, and that man was attached to another woman other than her.
فَمَاSoوَجَدْنَاwe foundجَوَاباًan answerأَحْسَنَbetterمِنْthanهَذَا.this.
So we found no answer better than this.
