وَعَنْAnd onعَلِيٍّthe authority of Aliقَالَ:he said:

And on the authority of Ali, he said:

قَالَSaidرَسُولُthe Messengerاللَّهِ،of Allah,صَلَّىmay Allah sendاللَّهُblessingsعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَلَّمَ:and grant him peace:

The Messenger of Allah, may Allah send blessings upon him and grant him peace, said:

يَاOمَعْشَرَcompanyقُرَيْشٍof Quraysh,وَاللَّهِby AllahلَيَبْعَثَنَّHe will surely sendاللَّهُAllahعَلَيْكُمْupon youرَجُلاًa manمِنْكُمْfrom among youقَدِwhoامْتَحَنَhas testedاللَّهُAllahقَلْبَهُhis heartلِلْإِيمَانِfor faith,يَضْرِبُstrikingرِقَابَكُمْyour necksعَلَىforالدِّينِ.the religion.

O company of Quraysh, by Allah, Allah will surely send upon you a man from among you whose heart Allah has tested for faith, striking your necks for the religion.

فَقَالَSo saidأَبُوAbuبَكْرٍ:Bakr:أَنَاAm IهُوَheيَاOرَسُولَMessengerاللَّهِ؟of Allah?

So Abu Bakr said: Am I he, O Messenger of Allah?

قَالَ:He said:لَا.No.

He said: No.

فَقَالَSo saidعُمَرُ:Umar:أَنَاAm IهُوَheيَاOرَسُولَMessengerاللَّهِ؟of Allah?

So Umar said: Am I he, O Messenger of Allah?

قَالَ:He said:لَا،No,وَلَكِنَّهُbut rather he isخَاصِفُthe menderالنَّعْلِ،of the sandal,وَأَنَاand I amأَخْصِفُmendingنَعْلَthe sandal ofرَسُولِMessengerاللَّهِ،of Allah,صَلَّىmay Allah sendاللَّهُblessingsعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَلَّمَ.and grant him peace.

He said: No, but rather he is the mender of the sandal, and I am mending the sandal of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah send blessings upon him and grant him peace.

وَعَنْAnd onجَابِرٍthe authority of Jabirقَالَ:he said:

And on the authority of Jabir, he said:

قَالَSaidرَسُولُthe Messengerاللَّهِ،of Allah,صَلَّىmay Allah sendاللَّهُblessingsعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَلَّمَ:and grant him peace:لِعَلِيٍّto Ali,هَذَاThis isوَلِيُّكُمْyour guardianبَعْدِيafter meإِذَاwhenكَانَتْthere isفِتْنَةٌ.a trial.

The Messenger of Allah, may Allah send blessings upon him and grant him peace, said to Ali: This is your guardian after me when there is a trial.

وَعَنْAnd onمُصْعَبٍthe authority of Mus'abعَنْfromأَبِيهِhis fatherقَالَ:he said:

And on the authority of Mus'ab from his father, he said:

سَمِعْتُI heardالنَّبِيَّ،the Prophet,صَلَّىmay Allah sendاللَّهُblessingsعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَلَّمَ،and grant him peace,يَقُولُ:saying:مَاWhatلَكُمْis it with youوَلِعَلِيٍّ،and Ali?مَنْWhoeverآذَىharmsعَلِيّاًAliفَقَدْthen indeedآذَانِي.he has harmed me.

I heard the Prophet, may Allah send blessings upon him and grant him peace, saying: What is it with you and Ali? Whoever harms Ali has indeed harmed me.

وَعَنْAnd onعَلِيٍّ،the authority of Ali,رَضِيَmay Allah be pleasedاللَّهُwith himعَنْهُ،he said:قَالَ:He said:هَلَكَHave perishedفِيَّconcerning meرَجُلَانِ:two men:عَدُوٌّan enemyمُبْغِضٌhatefulوَمُحِبٌّand a loverمُفْرِطٌ،excessive,

And on the authority of Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, he said: Two men have perished concerning me: a hateful enemy and an excessive lover.

قَالَ:He said:وَقَالَAnd will love meلِيُحَبَّنِيpeoplesأَقْوَامٌuntilحَتَّىmy loveيُدْخِلَهُمْwill enter themحُبِّيinto the Fireالنَّارَand will hate meوَيُبْغِضَنِيpeoplesأَقْوَامٌuntilحَتَّىmy hatredيُدْخِلَهُمْwill enter themبُغْضِيinto the Fire,النَّارَ،they areهُمُthe Rafidahالرَّافِضَةُand the Nasibah.وَالنَّاصِبَةُ.and the Nasibah.

He said: And peoples will love me until my love enters them into the Fire, and peoples will hate me until my hatred enters them into the Fire; they are the Rafidah and the Nasibah.

وَعَنْAnd onأُمِّthe authority of UmmسَلَمَةَSalamahقَالَتْ:she said:

And on the authority of Umm Salamah, she said:

قَالَSaidرَسُولُthe Messengerاللَّهِ،of Allah,صَلَّىmay Allah sendاللَّهُblessingsعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَلَّمَ:and grant him peace:لَاDoes notيُحِبُّloveعَلِيّاًAliمُنَافِقٌa hypocriteوَلَاand does notيُبْغِضُhateعَلِيّاًAliمُؤْمِنٌ.a believer.

The Messenger of Allah, may Allah send blessings upon him and grant him peace, said: No hypocrite loves Ali, and no believer hates Ali.

وَعَنْAnd onعَمْرِوthe authority of Amrبْنِson ofالْأَصَمِّAl-Asammقَالَ:he said:

And on the authority of Amr ibn Al-Asamm, he said:

قُلْتُI saidلِلْحَسَنِto Al-Hasanبْنِson ofعَلِيٍّ،Ali,رِضْوَانُmay the good pleasureاللَّهِof Allahعَلَيْهِمَا:be upon them both:هؤلاءِTheseالشِّيعَةُShi'ahيَزْعُمُونَclaimأَنَّthatعَلِيّاًAliمَبْعُوثٌis sentالآنَ.now.

I said to Al-Hasan son of Ali, may the good pleasure of Allah be upon them both: These Shi'ah claim that Ali is sent now.

قَالَ:He said:كَذَبُواThey lied,وَاللَّهِby Allah,مَاthey are notأُولَئِكَthoseبِشِيعَةٍShi'ah,وَلَوْand hadكَانَit beenكَمَاasيَقُولُونَthey say,مَاwe would not have married offأَنْكَحْنَاwe would not have married offنِسَاءَهُhis womenوَلَاnorقَسَمْنَاdistributedمِيرَاثَهُ.his inheritance.

He said: They lied, by Allah, those are not Shi'ah, and had it been as they say, we would not have married off his women nor distributed his inheritance.

وَعَنْAnd onفَاطِمَةَ،the authority of Fatimah,رَضِيَmay Allah be pleasedاللَّهُwith herعَنْهَا،she said:قَالَتْ:She said:دَخَلَEnteredعَلَيَّupon meعَلِيٌّ،Ali,رَضِيَmay Allah be pleasedاللَّهُwith himعَنْهُ،and I wasوَأَنَاand I wasعِنْدَwithالنَّبِيِّ،the Prophet,صَلَّىmay Allah sendاللَّهُblessingsعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَلَّمَ،and grant him peace,فَقَالَ:so he said:

And on the authority of Fatimah, may Allah be pleased with her, she said: Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, entered upon me while I was with the Prophet, may Allah send blessings upon him and grant him peace, and he said:

ابْشِرْRejoiceيَاOأَبَاAbuالْحَسَنِ!Al-Hasan!أَمَاVerilyإِنَّكَyou areفِيinالْجَنَّةِParadise,وَإِنَّand thatقَوْماًa peopleيَزْعُمُونَclaimأَنَّهُمْthat theyيُحِبُّونَكَlove you,يَرْفُضُونَwill rejectالْإِسْلَامَIslamيَمْرُقُونَand pass throughمِنْهُitكَمَاasيَمْرُقُpassesالسَّهْمُthe arrowمِنَfromالرَّمِيَّةِthe gameلَهُمْthey haveنَبْزٌa nicknameيُقَالُit is saidلَهُمْto themالرَّافِضَةُthe Rafidah,فَإِنْso ifأَدْرَكْتَهُمْyou reach themفَقَاتِلْهُمْthen fight themفَإِنَّهُمْfor indeed they areمُشْرِكُونَ.polytheists.

Rejoice, O Abu Al-Hasan! Verily, you are in Paradise, and that a people who claim to love you will reject Islam, passing through it as the arrow passes through the game; they have a nickname, it is said to them: the Rafidah. So if you reach them, then fight them, for indeed they are polytheists.

قَالَ:He said:وَحَدَّثَنَاAnd narrated to usرَجُلٌa manحَضَرَwho attendedمَجْلِسَthe gathering ofالْقَاسِمِAl-Qasimبْنِson ofالْمُجَمَّعِAl-Mujamma'وَهُوَwhile he wasوَالِيthe governor ofالْأَهْوَازِAl-Ahwaz,قَالَ:he said:حَضَرَAttendedمَجْلِسَهُhis gatheringرَجُلٌa manمِنْfromبَنِيBanilهَاشِمٍHashimفَقَالَ:who said:أَصْلَحَMay Allah rectifyاللَّهُAllahالْأَمِيرَ!the Amir!أَلَاWill you notأُحَدِّثُكَthat I relate to youبِفَضِيلَةٍa virtue ofلِأَمِيرِthe Commanderالْمُؤْمِنِينَof the FaithfulعَلِيِّAliبْنِson ofأَبِيAbuطَالِبٍ،Talib,رَضِيَmay Allah be pleasedاللَّهُwith him?عَنْهُ؟with him?

He said: And a man who attended the gathering of Al-Qasim ibn Al-Mujamma' narrated to us while he was the governor of Al-Ahwaz, he said: A man from Banu Hashim attended his gathering and said: May Allah rectify the Amir! Will you not let me relate to you a virtue of the Commander of the Faithful, Ali ibn Abu Talib, may Allah be pleased with him?

قَالَ:He said:نَعَمْYesإِنْifشِئْتَ.you wish.

He said: Yes, if you wish.

قَالَ:He said:حَدَّثَنِيNarrated to meأَبِيmy fatherقَالَ:who said:حَضَرْتُI attendedمَجْلِسَthe gathering ofمُحَمَّدِMuhammadبْنِson ofعَائِشَةَAishahبِالْبَصْرَةِin Basrahإِذْwhenقَامَstoodإِلَيْهِto himرَجُلٌa manمِنْfromوَسَطِthe middleالْحَلْقَةِof the circleفَقَالَ:and said:

He said: My father narrated to me, saying: I attended the gathering of Muhammad ibn Aishah in Basrah when a man from the middle of the circle stood up to him and said:

يَاOأَبَاAbuعَبْدِAbdالرَّحْمَنِAr-Rahman,مَنْwhoأَفْضَلُis the best ofأَصْحَابِthe companions ofرَسُولِthe Messengerاللَّهِ،of Allah,صَلَّىmay Allah sendاللَّهُblessingsعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَلَّمَ؟and grant him peace?

O Abu Abd Ar-Rahman, who is the best of the companions of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah send blessings upon him and grant him peace?

فَقَالَ:He said:أَبُوAbuبَكْرٍBakr,وَعُمَرُand Umar,وَعُثْمَانُand Uthman,وَطَلْحَةُand Talhah,وَالزُّبَيْرُand Az-Zubayr,وَسَعْدٌand Sa'd,وَسَعِيدٌand Sa'id,وَعَبْدُand AbdulالرَّحْمَنِRahmanبْنُson ofعَوْفٍAwf,وَأَبُوand AbuعُبَيْدَةَUbaydahبْنُson ofالْجَرَّاحِ.Al-Jarrah.

He said: Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, Talhah, Az-Zubayr, Sa'd, Sa'id, Abdul Rahman ibn Awf, and Abu Ubaydah ibn Al-Jarrah.

فَقَالَSo saidلَهُ:to him:فَأَيْنَThen where isعَلِيُّAliبْنُson ofأَبِيAbuطَالِبٍ،Talib,رَضِيَmay Allah be pleasedاللَّهُwith him?عَنْهُ؟with him?

So he said to him: Then where is Ali ibn Abu Talib, may Allah be pleased with him?

قَالَ:He said:يَاOهَذَاthis man,تَسْتَفْتِيdo you ask for a fatwaعَنْaboutأَصْحَابِهِhis companionsأَمْorعَنْaboutنَفْسِهِ؟himself?

He said: O this man, do you ask for a fatwa about his companions or about himself?

قَالَ:He said:بَلْRatherعَنْaboutأَصْحَابِهِ.his companions.

He said: Rather about his companions.

قَالَ:He said:إِنَّIndeedاللَّهَAllahتَبَارَكَBlessedوَتَعَالَىand Exaltedيَقُولُ:says:""قُلْSay,تَعَالَوْاCome,نَدْعُlet us callأَبْنَاءَنَاour sonsوَأَبْنَاءَكُمْand your sons,وَنِسَاءَنَاand our womenوَنِسَاءَكُمْand your women,وَأَنْفُسَنَاand ourselvesوَأَنْفُسَكُمْand yourselves""فَكَيْفَso howيَكُونُcanأَصْحَابُهُhis companionsمِثْلَbe likeنَفْسِهِ؟himself?

He said: Indeed Allah, Blessed and Exalted, says: "Say, Come, let us call our sons and your sons, and our women and your women, and ourselves and yourselves", so how can his companions be like himself?

وَعَنْAnd onعَطَاءٍthe authority of Ataقَالَ:he said:كَانَThere wasلِعَلِيٍّ،for Ali,رَحِمَهُmay Allah have mercyاللَّهُ،upon him,مَوْقِفٌa standingمِنْwithرَسُولِthe Messengerاللَّهِ،of Allah,صَلَّىmay Allah sendاللَّهُblessingsعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَلَّمَ،and grant him peace,يَوْمَon the day ofالْجُمُعَةِFriday

And on the authority of Ata, he said: Ali, may Allah have mercy upon him, had a standing with the Messenger of Allah, may Allah send blessings upon him and grant him peace, on the day of Friday.

إِذَاWhenخَرَجَhe came outأَخَذَhe tookبِيَدِهِhis handفَلَاand he would notيَخْطُوtakeخُطْوَةًa stepإِلَّاexcept thatقَالَ:he said:اللَّهُمَّO Allahهَذَاthis isعَلِيٌّAliاتَّبَعَhe has followedمَرْضَاتَكَYour pleasureفَارْضَso be pleasedعَنْهُ،with him,حَتَّىuntilيَصْعَدَhe ascendsالْمِنْبَرَ.the pulpit.

When he came out, he took his hand and he would not take a step except that he said: O Allah, this is Ali, he has followed Your pleasure so be pleased with him, until he ascends the pulpit.

وَحَدَّثَنَاAnd narrated to usإِبْرَاهِيمُIbrahimبْنُson ofأَحْمَدَAhmadالْغَضَائِرِيُّAl-Ghadairiبِإِسْنَادٍwith an isnadيَرْفَعُهُthat he traces backإِلَىtoأَبِيAbuمَالِكٍMalikالْأَشْجَعِيِّAl-Ashja'iرَوَاهُwho narrated itأَنَّthatالنَّبِيَّ،the Prophet,صَلَّىmay Allah sendاللَّهُblessingsعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَلَّمَ،and grant him peace,قَالَ:said:

And Ibrahim ibn Ahmad Al-Ghadairi narrated to us with an isnad that he traces back to Abu Malik Al-Ashja'i who narrated it that the Prophet, may Allah send blessings upon him and grant him peace, said:

هَبَطَDescendedعَلَيَّupon meجِبْرِيلُ،Gabriel,عَلَيْهِupon himالسَّلَامُ،be peace,يَوْمَon the day ofحُنَيْنٍHunaynفَقَالَ:and said:يَاOمُحَمَّدُMuhammadإِنَّindeedرَبَّكَyour LordتَبَارَكَBlessedوَتَعَالَىand Exaltedيُقْرِئُكَconveys greetings of peace to youالسَّلَامَ،and peace,وَقَالَ:and said:ادْفَعْGiveهَذِهِthisالْأُتْرُجَّةَcitronإِلَىtoابْنِthe son ofعَمِّكَyour paternal uncleوَوَصِيِّكَand your successorعَلِيِّAliبْنِson ofأَبِيAbuطَالِبٍ،Talib,رَضِيَmay Allah be pleasedاللَّهُwith him.عَنْهُ.with him.

Gabriel, upon him be peace, descended upon me on the day of Hunayn and said: O Muhammad, indeed your Lord, Blessed and Exalted, conveys greetings of peace to you and said: Give this citron to your paternal uncle and your successor Ali ibn Abu Talib, may Allah be pleased with him.

فَدَفَعْتُهَاSo I gave itإِلَيْهِto himفَوَضَعْتُهَاand he placed itفِيinكَفِّهِhis palmفَانْفَلَقَتْand it splitبِنِصْفَيْنِinto two halvesفَخَرَجَand out of it cameمِنْهَاfrom itرَقٌّa parchmentأَبْيَضُwhiteمَكْتُوبٌwrittenفِيهِin itبِالنُّورِ:with light:مِنَFromالطَّالِبِthe Seekerالْغَالِبِthe OvercomerإِلَىtoعَلِيٍّAliبْنِson ofأَبِيAbuطَالِبٍ.Talib.

So I gave it to him and he placed it in his palm, and it split into two halves, and out of it came a white parchment written in it with light: From the Seeker, the Overcomer, to Ali ibn Abu Talib.
