He said: Abdul-Malik ibn Marwan wrote to Umar ibn Muhammad, the governor of the Balqa, saying: Propose on my behalf to Al-Shaqraa, daughter of Shabib ibn Awana Al-Ta'i, while he was at that time in a desert camp of his with a number of his companions.

فَأَرْسَلَSo sentإِلَيْهِto himعُمَرُ:Umar:إِنَّIndeedأَمِيرَthe Commanderالْمُؤْمِنِينَof the Faithfulكَتَبَhas writtenإِلَيَّto meأَنْthatأَخْطُبَI proposeعَلَيْهِon his behalfالشَّقْرَاءَto Al-Shaqraaابْنَتَكَyour daughterفَاحْضُرْso attendفَأَرْسَلَand he sentإِلَيْهِ.to him.

Umar said: Let us travel to him.

فَسَارَSo he traveledفِيinجَمَاعَةٍa groupمِنْofوُجُوهِnotablesالْبَلْقَاءِ.of the Balqa.

So he traveled in a group of the notables of the Balqa.

He said: So we reached an Arab at the courtyard of his tent and we greeted him and he returned the greeting, and Umar spoke, whereupon the Arab said: Are you the messenger of the Commander of the Faithful?

قَالَ:He said:نَعَمْ،Yes,قَالَ:he said:فَإِنَّاthen indeed weقَدْhaveزَوَّجْنَاهُmarried her to himعَلَىfor a dowerصَدَاقِlike the dower ofنِسَائِنَاour women:مِائَةٍone hundredمِنَcamelsالْإِبِلِand whateverوَمَاfollows thatيَتْبَعُهَاof garmentsمِنَand servants.الثِّيَابِgarmentsوَالْخَدَمِ.and servants.

He said: Yes. He said: Then we have indeed married her to him for a dower like the dower of our women: one hundred camels and whatever follows that of garments and servants.

فَقُلْتُ:I said:نَعَمْ.Yes.

I said: Yes.

Then he brought us three bowls of broken pieces of bread and milk, so we ate, then we departed.

فَكَتَبْتُSo I wroteإِلَىtoعَبْدِAbdul-MalikالْمَلِكِibnبْنِMarwanمَرْوَانَso he sentفَأَرْسَلَto himإِلَيْهِone hundredبِمِائَةٍcamelsمِنَand ten thousandالْإِبِلِdirhamsوَعَشَرَةِand whateverآلَافِfollows thatدِرْهَمٍof perfumeوَمَاservantsيَتْبَعُand furnishings.ذَلِكَthatمِنَofالطِّيِّبِperfumeوَالْخَدَمِand servantsوَالْأَثَاثِ.and furnishings.

So I wrote to Abdul-Malik ibn Marwan, and he sent to him one hundred camels, ten thousand dirhams, and whatever follows that of perfume, servants, and furnishings.

فَفَهَّزَهَاSo he prepared themثُمَّthenحَمَلَهَاcarried themإِلَىtoعَبْدِAbdul-Malikالْمَلِكِand there wasوَمَاwith herمَعَهَاof thatمِنْnothingذَلِكَexceptشَيْءٌthe camelإِلَّاupon which she rodeالْبَعِيرَand with herالَّذِيwere womenرَكِبَتْهُfrom the daughtersوَمَعَهَاof her paternal uncle.نِسْوَةٌwomenمِنْfromبَنَاتِdaughters ofعَمِّهَا.her paternal uncle.

So he prepared the dower and carried it to Abdul-Malik, and nothing of it was with her except the camel upon which she rode, and with her were women from the daughters of her paternal uncle.

فَلَمَّاWhenوَافَتْshe arrived atعَبْدَAbdul-Malikالْمَلِكِhe orderedأَمَرَand she was enteredفَأُدْخِلَتْinto a houseإِلَىwhere she stayedدَارٍfor days,فَأَقَامَتْthenأَيَّاماًAbdul-Malikثُمَّconsummated marriageإِنَّwith herعَبْدَand he usedالْمَلِكِto sayبَنَىfrequently:بِهَاI have not seenفَكَانَthe like of this Arab womanكَثِيراًin witمَاand characterيَقُولُ:and speech.مَاWhatرَأَيْتُI sawمِثْلَlikeهَذِهِthisالْأَعْرَابِيَّةِBedouin womanظَرْفاًin witوَخُلُقاًand characterوَمَنْطِقاً.and speech.

When she arrived at Abdul-Malik, he ordered that she be taken into a house, and she stayed for days. Then Abdul-Malik consummated his marriage with her, and he would frequently say: I have not seen the like of this Arab woman in wit, character, and speech.

فَاشْتَدَّSo that weighed heavilyذَلِكَuponعَلَىAtikaعَاتِكَةَdaughter ofبِنْتِYazidيَزِيدَibnبْنِMuawiyahمُعَاوِيَةَso she sentفَأَرْسَلَتْto Rouhإِلَىibn Zinba,رُوحِand he wasبْنِone of the peopleزِنْبَاعٍ،most specialوَكَانَto Abdul-Malik,مِنْso she said:أَخَصِّO AbuالنَّاسِZurahبِعَبْدِyou have knownالْمَلِكِ،the opinionفَقَالَتْ:of the Commanderيَاof the FaithfulأَبَاMuawiyahزُرْعَةَconcerning youقَدْand the opinionعَلِمْتَof Yazidرَأْيَafter him,أَمِيرِand that the Commanderالْمُؤْمِنِينَof the Faithfulمُعَاوِيَةَhas been captivatedكَانَby the matterفِيكَof thisوَرَأْيَArab womanيَزِيدَand she has dominatedمِنْhis heartبَعْدِهِso it is up to youوَأَنَّto spoil thatأَمِيرَwith him.الْمُؤْمِنِينَThe Commanderقَدْof the Faithfulأَعْجَبَهُhas been captivatedأَمْرُby the matterهَذِهِof thisالْأَعْرَابِيَّةِArab womanوَغَلَبَتْand she has dominatedعَلَىhis heartقَلْبِهِso it is up to youفَشَأْنُكَto spoil thatفِيwith him.إِفْسَادِto spoilذَلِكَthatعِنْدَهُ.with him.

So that weighed heavily on Atika bint Yazid ibn Muawiyah, and she sent to Rouh ibn Zinba, who was one of the people most special to Abdul-Malik, and said: O Abu Zurah, you have known the opinion of the Commander of the Faithful Muawiyah concerning you and the opinion of Yazid after him, and that the Commander of the Faithful has been captivated by the matter of this Arab woman and she has dominated his heart, so it is up to you to spoil that with him.

قَالَ:He said:نَعَمْYesوَنِعْمَةُand with pleasure.عَيْنٍ.and with pleasure.

He said: Yes, and with pleasure.

Then he was alone with Abdul-Malik and said: O Commander of the Faithful, how do you view the Arab woman? He said: She has gathered what the women of the cities and the desert have gathered. He said: O Commander of the Faithful, you are regarding the Arab woman as the poet said: If a trait from Tamim pleases you... Then what displeases you from Tamim is more.

فَقَالَSo saidلَهُ:to himلَاDo notتَقُلْsayذَلِكَ،that,قَالَ:he said:كَأَنَّكَIt is as ifبِهَاyou will findقَدْshe has changedحَالَتْto other thanإِلَىwhat sheغَيْرِcurrentlyمَاis.هِيَis.عَلَيْهِ.is.

فَكَثُرَSo that became frequentذَلِكَfrom him.مِنْهُ.from him.

So that became frequent from him.

ثُمَّThenإِنَّindeedعَبْدَAbdul-Malikالْمَلِكِenteredدَخَلَupon herعَلَيْهَاand said:فَقَالَ:O Shaqraaيَاdid you knowشَقْرَاءُthat Rouhأَعْلَمْتِsaid to meأَنَّsuch and such?رُوحاًShe said:قَالَAnd whyلِيwould that beكَذَاwhen the stateوَكَذَا؟of my tribeفَقَالَتْ:and his tribeوَلِمَis as youذَاكَknow?وَحَالُHe said:عَشِيرَتِيIt is as Iوَعَشِيرَتِهِtold youكَمَاand if you likeتَعْلَمُ؟I will let youفَقَالَ:hear thatهُوَfrom him!عَلَىShe said:مَاI wouldقُلْتُlike that.لَكِlike that.وَإِنْlike that.أَحْبَبْتِlike that.أَسْمَعْتُكِlike that.ذَلِكَlike that.مِنْهُ!like that.فَقَالَتْ:like that.قَدْlike that.أَحْبَبْتُ.like that.

Then Abdul-Malik entered upon her and said: O Shaqraa, did you know that Rouh said to me such and such? She said: And why would that be when the state of my tribe and his tribe is as you know? He said: It is as I told you, and if you like I will let you hear that from him! She said: I would like that.
