وَلاَAndتُصِرَّdo not bindمِنْofحَبْلِthe ropeامْرِئٍof a man

And do not tie your rope to the rope of a man in a man's pleasure, lest it be connected one day and your rope be severed.

فِيinرِضَىpleasureامْرِئٍof a man

in a man's pleasure,

فَيَتَّصِلاَso they connectيَوْماًone dayوَحَبْلُكَand your ropeأَبْتَرُis cut off

so they connect one day and your rope is severed

مَحَاسِنُThe Virtuesالصِّدْقِof Truthfulness

The Virtues of Truthfulness

قَالَSaidبَعْضُsomeالْحُكَمَاءِ:of the wise:

Some of the wise said: Adhere to truthfulness, for the sharp sword in the hand of the brave man is not mightier than truthfulness.

عَلَيْكَAdhereبِالصِّدْقِto truthfulness

Adhere to truthfulness

فَمَاfor notالسَّيْفُis the swordالْقَاطِعُthe sharp

for the sharp sword

فِيinكَفِّthe handالرَّجُلِof the manالشَّجَاعِbrave

in the hand of the brave man

بِأَعَزَّmightierمِنْthanالصِّدْقِ،truthfulness,

mightier than truthfulness,

وَالصِّدْقُand truthfulnessعِزٌّis mightوَإِنْeven ifكَانَthere isفِيهِin itمَاwhatتَكْرَهُ،you dislike,

and truthfulness is might even if it contains what you dislike,

وَالْكَذِبُand lyingذُلٌّis disgraceوَإِنْeven ifكَانَthere isفِيهِin itمَاwhatتُحِبُّ،you love,

and lying is disgrace even if it contains what you love,

وَمَنْand whoeverعُرِفَis knownبِالْكَذِبِfor lyingاتُّهِمَis suspectedفِيregardingالصِّدْقِ.truthfulness.

and whoever is known for lying is suspected regarding truthfulness.

وَقِيلَ:And it was said:الصِّدْقُTruthfulnessمِيزَانُis the scaleاللَّهِof God

And it was said: Truthfulness is the scale of God upon which justice revolves, and lying is the measure of Satan upon which injustice revolves.

الَّذِيwhichيَدُورُrevolvesعَلَيْهِupon itالْعَدْلُ،justice,

upon which justice revolves,

وَالْكَذِبُand lyingمِكْيَالُis the measureالشَّيْطَانِof Satan

and lying is the measure of Satan

الَّذِيwhichيَدُورُrevolvesعَلَيْهِupon itالْجَوْرُ.injustice.

upon which injustice revolves.

وَقَالَAnd saidابْنُIbnالسِّمَاكِ:Al-Sammak:

And Ibn Al-Sammak said: I do not think I am rewarded for abandoning lying, because I abandon it out of pride.

مَاnotأَحْسَبُنِيdo I think myselfأُؤْجَرُrewardedعَلَىforتَرْكِabandoningالْكَذِبِlying

I do not think I am rewarded for abandoning lying

لِأَنِّيbecause Iأَتْرُكُهُabandon itأَنَفَةً.out of pride.

because I abandon it out of pride.

وَقَالَAnd saidالشَّعْبِيُّ:Al-Sha'bi:

And Al-Sha'bi said: Adhere to truthfulness where you see that it harms you, for it will benefit you; and avoid lying where you see that it benefits you, for it will harm you.

عَلَيْكَAdhereبِالصِّدْقِto truthfulnessحَيْثُwhereتَرَىyou seeأَنَّهُthat itيَضُرُّكَharms you

Adhere to truthfulness where you see that it harms you

فَإِنَّهُfor itيَنْفَعُكَ،will benefit you;

for it will benefit you;

وَاجْتَنِبِand avoidالْكَذِبَlyingحَيْثُwhereتَرَىyou seeأَنَّهُthat itيَنْفَعُكَbenefits you

and avoid lying where you see that it benefits you

فَإِنَّهُfor itيَضُرُّكَ.will harm you.

for it will harm you.

وَعَنْAnd fromأَسْمَاءَAsma'بِنْتِdaughterأَبِيof AbuبَكْرٍBakrقَالَتْ:she said:

And from Asma' bint Abi Bakr, she said: The Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, said: Lying is not permissible except in three cases: a man's lying to his wife to please her, reconciliation between people, and lying in war.

قَالَSaidرَسُولُthe Messengerاللَّهِ،of God,صَلَّىmay Godاللَّهُbless himعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَلَّمَ:and grant him peace:

The Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, said:

لاَis notيَصْلُحُpermissibleالْكَذِبُlyingإِلاَّexceptفِيinثَلاَثٍ:three:

Lying is not permissible except in three cases:

كَذِبُlying ofالرَّجُلِa manلِأَهْلِهِto his familyلِيُرْضِيَهَا،to please her,

a man's lying to his family to please her,

وَإِصْلاَحٌand reconciliationبَيْنَbetweenالنَّاسِ،people,

reconciliation between people,

وَكَذِبٌand lyingفِيinحَرْبٍ.war.

and lying in war.

وَقَالَAnd saidبَعْضُsomeالْحُكَمَاءِ:of the wise:الصِّدْقُTruthfulnessعِزٌّis mightوَالْكَذِبُand lyingخُضُوعٌ.is submissiveness.

And some of the wise said: Truthfulness is might and lying is submissiveness.

وَقَالَAnd saidآخَرُ:another:

And another said: If the sensible person did not abandon lying except out of a sense of honor, he would truly be worthy of that; so how much more when it involves sin and shame!

لَوْIfلَمْnotيَتْرُكِabandonedالْعَاقِلُthe sensible personالْكَذِبَlying

If the sensible person did not abandon lying

إِلاَّexceptمُرُوءَةًout of a sense of honorلَقَدْcertainlyكَانَhe would have beenحَقِيقاًworthyبِذَلِكَof that

except out of a sense of honor, he would truly be worthy of that;

فَكَيْفَso howوَفِيهِwhen in it isالْمَأْثَمُthe sinوَالْعَارُ!and the shame!

so how much more when it involves sin and shame!

وَمِنَAnd amongالْمَعْرُوفِينَthe known onesبِالصِّدْقِfor truthfulnessأَبُوAbuذَرٍّDharrالْغِفَارِيُّ،Al-Ghifari,

And among those known for truthfulness was Abu Dharr Al-Ghifari. The Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, said: The sky has not shaded nor the earth has carried a more truthful speaker than Abu Dharr.

قَالَSaidالنَّبِيُّ،the Prophet,صَلَّىmay Godاللَّهُbless himعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَلَّمَ:and grant him peace:

The Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, said:

مَاnotأَظَلَّتِhas shadedالْخَضْرَاءُthe green (sky)وَلاَnorأَقَلَّتِhas carriedالْغَبْرَاءُthe dusty (earth)

The sky has not shaded nor the earth has carried

عَلَىa moreأَصْدَقِtruthfulذِيpossessor ofلَهْجَةٍspeechمِنْthanأَبِيAbuذَرٍّ.Dharr.

a more truthful speaker than Abu Dharr.

وَمِنْهُمُAnd among themالْعَبَّاسُis Al-Abbasبْنُson ofعَبْدِAbdالْمُطَّلِبِ،Al-Muttalib,

And among them is Al-Abbas bin Abd Al-Muttalib. Al-Hakam bin Isa narrated to us from Al-A'mash from Al-Sha'bi, who said: Al-Abbas came upon the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, while Gabriel, peace be upon him, was with him.

حَدَّثَنَاNarrated to usالْحَكَمُAl-Hakamبْنُson ofعِيسَىIsaعَنِfromالْأَعْمَشِAl-A'mashعَنِfromالشَّعْبِيِّAl-Sha'biقَالَ:he said:

Al-Hakam bin Isa narrated to us from Al-A'mash from Al-Sha'bi, who said:

اِطَّلَعَCameالْعَبَّاسُAl-Abbasعَلَىuponالنَّبِيِّ،the Prophet,صَلَّىmay Godاللَّهُbless himعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَلَّمَ،and grant him peace,

Al-Abbas came upon the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace,

وَعِنْدَهُand with him wasجِبْرِيلُ،Gabriel,عَلَيْهِupon himالسَّلاَمُ،be peace,

while Gabriel, peace be upon him, was with him.

فَقَالَso saidلَهُto himجِبْرِيلُ،Gabriel,عَلَيْهِupon himالسَّلاَمُ:be peace:هَذَاIs thisعَمُّكَyour uncleالْعَبَّاسُ؟Al-Abbas?

Gabriel, peace be upon him, said to him: Is this your uncle Al-Abbas? He said: Yes.

قَالَ:He said:نَعَمْ.Yes.

He said: Yes.

قَالَ:He said:إِنَّIndeedاللَّهَGodجَلَّmajesticوَعَزَّand mighty

He said: Indeed, God, majestic and mighty, commands you to convey greetings of peace to him, and to inform him that his name is Abdullah Al-Sadiq, and that he has an intercession on the Day of Resurrection.

يَأْمُرُكَcommands youأَنْthatتَقْرَأَyou conveyعَلَيْهِupon himالسَّلاَمَ،greetings of peace,

commands you to convey greetings of peace to him,

وَتُعْلِمَهُand to inform himأَنَّthatاسْمَهُhis nameعَبْدُAbdullahاللَّهِGodالصَّادِقُthe Truthful

and to inform him that his name is Abdullah Al-Sadiq

وَأَنَّand thatلَهُfor him isشَفَاعَةًan intercessionيَوْمَon the dayالْقِيَامَةِ.of Resurrection.

and that he has an intercession on the Day of Resurrection.

فَأَخْبَرَهُ،So informed him,صَلَّىmay Godاللَّهُbless himعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَلَّمَ،and grant him peace,بِذَلِكَ،of that,فَتَبَسَّمَso smiledالْعَبَّاسُ.Al-Abbas.

So the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, informed him of that, and Al-Abbas smiled.

فَقَالَSo saidلَهُto himالنَّبِيُّ،the Prophet,صَلَّىmay Godاللَّهُbless himعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَلَّمَ:and grant him peace:

The Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, said to him: If you wish, I will tell you why you smiled, and if you wish to tell me, then speak.

إِنْIfشِئْتَyou wishأَخْبَرْتُكَI will tell youمِمَّاof whatتَبَسَّمْتَyou smiled

If you wish, I will tell you why you smiled

وَإِنْand ifشِئْتَyou wishأَنْthatتَقُولَyou speakفَقُلْ.then speak.

and if you wish to tell me, then speak.

قَالَ:He said:بَلْRatherتُعَلِّمُنِيyou inform meيَاOرَسُولَMessengerاللَّهِ.of God.

He said: Rather, you inform me, O Messenger of God.

قَالَ:He said:لِأَنَّكَBecause youلَمْdid notتَحْلِفْswearيَمِيناًan oath

He said: Because you never swore an oath in the pre-Islamic period of ignorance nor in Islam, neither righteously nor falsely, and you never said no to a beggar.

فِيinجَاهِلِيَّةٍignoranceوَلاَnorإِسْلَامٍIslam

in the pre-Islamic period of ignorance nor in Islam

بَرَّةًrighteouslyوَلاَnorفَاجِرَةًfalsely

neither righteously nor falsely

وَلَمْand you neverتَقُلْsaidلِسَائِلٍto a beggarلَا.no.

and you never said no to a beggar.

قَالَ:He said:وَالَّذِيBy the Oneبَعَثَكَwho sent youبِالْحَقِّwith truthمَاnotتَبَسَّمْتُdid I smileإِلَّاexceptلِذَلِكَ.for that.

He said: By the One who sent you with the truth, I did not smile except for that.

وَمِنْهُمْAnd among themعَلِيُّis Aliبْنُson ofأَبِيAbuطَالِبٍ،Talib,رَضِيَmay God beاللَّهُpleasedعَنْهُ،with him,

And among them is Ali bin Abi Talib, may God be pleased with him, who said on the day of Nahrawan to his companions: Attack them, for by God they will not kill ten nor will ten escape from them.

قَالَHe saidيَوْمَon the dayالنَّهْرَوَانِof Nahrawanلِأَصْحَابِهِ:to his companions:

He said on the day of Nahrawan to his companions:

شُدُّواAttackعَلَيْهِمْthemفَوَاللَّهِfor by Godلَاnotيَقْتُلُونَthey will killعَشَرَةًtenوَلَاnorيَنْجُوwill escapeمِنْهُمْfrom themعَشَرَةً.ten.

Attack them, for by God they will not kill ten nor will ten escape from them.

فَشُدُّواSo they attackedعَلَيْهِمْthemفَوَاللَّهِand by Godمَاnotقُتِلَwas killedمِنْofأَصْحَابِهِhis companionsتَمَامُthe full count ofعَشَرَةٍtenوَلَاnorنَجَاescapedمِنْهُمْfrom themتَمَامُthe full count ofعَشَرَةٍ.ten.

So they attacked them, and by God, not even the full count of ten of his companions was killed, nor did the full count of ten escape from them.

ثُمَّThenقَالَ:he said:اِطْلُبُواSearch forذَاthe possessor ofالثُّدَيَّةِ.the small breast.

Then he said: Search for the one with the small breast. So they searched for him and said: We did not find him.

فَطَلَبُوهُSo they searched for himفَقَالُوا:and said:لَمْWe did notنَجِدْهُ.find him.

So they searched for him and said: We did not find him.

فَقَالَ:He said:وَاللَّهِBy Godمَاnotكَذَبْتُdid I lieقَطُّeverوَلَاnorكُذِبْتُ،was I lied to,

He said: By God, I never lied nor was I lied to, and by God, the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, informed me that he would be killed with the worst generation while the best generation would kill them.

وَاللَّهِand by Godلَقَدْcertainlyأَخْبَرَنِيinformed meرَسُولُthe Messengerاللَّهِ،of God,صَلَّىmay Godاللَّهُbless himعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَلَّمَ،and grant him peace,

and by God, the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, informed me

أَنَّهُthat heيُقْتَلُwill be killedمَعَwithشَرِّthe worstجِيلٍgenerationيَقْتُلُهُمْkills themخَيْرُthe bestجِيلٍ.generation.

that he would be killed with the worst generation while the best generation would kill them.

ثُمَّThenدَعَاhe called forبِبَغْلَةِthe muleرَسُولِof the Messengerاللَّهِ،of God,صَلَّىmay Godاللَّهُbless himعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَلَّمَ،and grant him peace,فَرَكِبَهَاso he rode it

Then he called for the mule of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, and rode it, traveling until it stopped at a pit containing the slain.

فَسَارَand he traveledحَتَّىuntilوَقَفَتْit stoppedعَلَىatقَلِيبٍa pitفِيهِin itقَتْلَىwere slain

and he traveled until it stopped at a pit containing the slain

فَقَالَ:and said:اقْلِبُواTurn overالْقَتْلَىthe slainوَاطْلُبُوهُand search for himبَيْنَهُمْ.among them.

and said: Turn over the slain and search for him among them.

فَإِذَاBeholdهُوَhe wasسَابِعُthe seventh ofسَبْعَةٍ،seven,فَلَمَّاand whenأَخْرَجَهُhe brought him outقَالَ:he said:اللَّهُGodأَكْبَرُ!is the greatest!

Behold, he was the seventh of seven. When he brought him out, he said: God is the greatest!

لَوْلَاWere it notأَنْthatتَنْكَلُواyou would become overconfidentفَتَتْرُكُواand abandonالْعَمَلَwork

Were it not that you would become overconfident and abandon work, I would have informed you of what God, majestic and mighty, has prepared for those who killed them upon the tongue of His Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace.

لَأَخْبَرْتُكُمْI would have informed youبِمَاof whatجَعَلَhas preparedاللَّهُGodجَلَّmajesticوَعَزَّand mighty

I would have informed you of what God, majestic and mighty,

لِمَنْfor the one whoقَتَلَهُمْkilled themعَلَىuponلِسَانِthe tongueنَبِيِّهِ،of His Prophet,صَلَّىmay Godاللَّهُbless himعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَلَّمَ.and grant him peace.

has prepared for those who killed them upon the tongue of His Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace.

وَمِنَAnd amongالْأَخْبَارِthe reportsفِيregardingمِثْلِهِthe like of thisقِيلَ:it is said:

And among the reports regarding the like of this, it is said: Hisham bin Urwah entered upon Al-Mansur and said to him: O Abu Al-Mundhir, do you remember when I entered upon you along with my brother and Abu Al-Khaļa'if while you were drinking a beverage made of barley flour with a reed straw?

دَخَلَEnteredهِشَامُHishamبْنُson ofعُرْوَةَUrwahعَلَىuponالْمَنْصُورِAl-Mansurفَقَالَand saidلَهُ:to him:

Hisham bin Urwah entered upon Al-Mansur and said to him:

يَاOأَبَاAbuالْمُنْذِرِAl-Mundhirأَتَذْكُرُdo you rememberحَيْثُwhenدَخَلْتُI enteredعَلَيْكَupon youأَنَاIوَأَخِيand my brotherمَعَalong withأَبِيAbuالْخَلَائِفِAl-Khala'if

O Abu Al-Mundhir, do you remember when I entered upon you along with my brother and Abu Al-Khala'if

وَأَنْتَwhile youتَشْرَبُwere drinkingسَوِيقاًbeverage of barley flourبِقَصَبَةِwith a straw ofيراعٍa reed

while you were drinking a beverage made of barley flour with a reed straw?

فَلَمَّاso whenخَرَجْنَاwe went outمِنْfromعِنْدِكَyouقَالَsaidأَبِي:my father:

So when we went out from you, my father said:

اسْتَوْصُواTreat wellبِالشَّيْخِthe old manخَيْراًkindlyوَاعْرِفُواand recognizeحَقَّهُhis right

Treat the old man kindly and recognize his right,

فَلَاfor stillيَزَالُwill continueفِيinقَوْمِكُمْyour peopleبَقِيَّةٌgoodnessمَاas long asبَقِيَ؟he remains?

for there will still be goodness in your people as long as he remains?

قَالَ:He said:مَاnotأُثْبِتُdo I confirmذَاكَthatيَاOأَمِيرَCommanderالْمُؤْمِنِينَ.of the Faithful.

He said: I do not confirm that, O Commander of the Faithful.

فَلَامَهُSo blamed himبَعْضُsomeأَهْلِهِof his familyوَقَالُوا:and said:

So some of his family blamed him and said:

يُذَكِّرُكَReminds youأَمِيرُthe Commanderالْمُؤْمِنِينَof the Faithfulمَاof whatيَمُتُّconnectsبِهِwith itإِلَيْكَto you

The Commander of the Faithful reminds you of a connection he has to you

وَتَقُولُand you sayلَهُto himلَاI doأَذْكُرُهُ؟not remember it?

and you say to him: I do not remember it?

فَقَالَ:He said:لَمْI did notأَذْكُرْهُremember itوَلَمْand norيُعَوْدِنِيhas accustomed meاللَّهُGodفِيregardingالصِّدْقِtruthfulnessإِلَّاexceptخَيْراً.well.

He said: I did not remember it, and God has not accustomed me regarding truthfulness except with good.

قَالَ:He said:قَدِمَCameزِيَادٌZiyadعَلَىtoمُعَاوِيَةَ،Muawiyah,

He said: Ziyad came to Muawiyah, and when their gathering grew long, Ziyad narrated a tradition to him.

فَلَمَّاand whenطَالَgrew longبِهِمُfor themالْمَجْلِسُthe gatheringحَدَّثَهُnarrated to himزِيَادٌZiyadبِحَدِيثٍ،a tradition,

and when their gathering grew long, Ziyad narrated a tradition to him.

فَقَالَSo saidلَهُto himمُعَاوِيَةُ:Muawiyah:كَذَبْتَ.You lied.

Muawiyah said to him: You lied.

فَقَالَ:He said:مَهْلاًSoftlyيَاOأَمِيرَCommanderالْمُؤْمِنِينَof the Faithful

He said: Softly, O Commander of the Faithful, for by God, I have not untied my wrapping garment for speech except upon the pledge of truth, and I have never lied.

فَوَاللَّهِfor by Godمَاnotحَلَلْتُdid I untieلِلْكَلَامِfor speechحَبْوَةًwrapping garment

for by God, I have not untied my wrapping garment for speech

إِلَّاexceptعَلَىuponبَيْعَةِthe pledge ofالصِّدْقِtruthوَلَمْand I haveأَكْذِبْ،never lied,

except upon the pledge of truth, and I have never lied,

وَحَيَاةُand the life ofالْكَذِبِlyingعِنْدِيto meمَوْتُis the death ofالْمُرُوءَةِ،chivalry,

and the life of lying to me is the death of chivalry,

فَاسْتَحْيَاهُso he made him feel ashamedمُعَاوِيَةُMuawiyahوَقَالَ:and said:

so Muawiyah felt ashamed and said:

يَغْفِرُMay forgiveاللَّهُGodلَكَyouيَاOأَخِي،my brother,

May God forgive you, O my brother,

فَكَأَنِّيfor it is as ifأَرَىI seeبِكَin youحَرْبَHarbبْنَson ofأُمَيَّةَUmayyah

for it is as if I see Harb bin Umayyah in you

فِيinجَمِيلِthe beauty ofشِيَمِهِhis traitsوَكَرَمِand nobility ofأَخْلَاقِهِ.his manners.

in the beauty of his traits and the nobility of his manners.

قَالَ:He said:وَكَانَAnd wasالْفَضْلُAl-Fadlبْنُson ofالرَّبِيعِAl-RabiيُخَاطِبُaddressingالرَّشِيدَAl-Rashid

He said: Al-Fadl bin Al-Rabi was addressing Al-Rashid, and Al-Rashid said to him: You lied.

فَقَالَSo saidلَهُto himالرَّشِيدُ:Al-Rashid:كَذَبْتَ.You lied.

Al-Rashid said to him: You lied.

فَقَالَ:He said:يَاOأَمِيرَCommanderالْمُؤْمِنِينَof the Faithful

He said: O Commander of the Faithful, the face of lying cannot confront your face, nor can its tongue match your response.

وَجْهُthe face ofالْكَذِبِlyingلَاcannotيُقَابِلُconfrontوَجْهَكَyour face

the face of lying cannot confront your face

وَلِسَانُهُand its tongueلَاcannotيُقَابِلُmatchجَوَابَكَ.your response.

nor can its tongue match your response.

مَحَاسِنُThe Virtuesالْكَذِبِof Lying

The Virtues of Lying

رُوِيَIt was narratedعَنِfromالْمُغِيرَةِAl-Mughirahبْنِson ofإِبْرَاهِيمَIbrahimقَالَ:he said:

It was narrated from Al-Mughirah bin Ibrahim that he said: Lying was not permitted for anyone except Al-Hajjaj bin 'Ilat.

لَمْwas notيُرْخَصْpermittedلِأَحَدٍfor anyoneفِيinالْكَذِبِlyingإِلَّاexceptلِلْحَجَّاجِfor Al-Hajjajبْنِson ofعِلَاتٍ،'Ilat,

Lying was not permitted for anyone except Al-Hajjaj bin 'Ilat,

فَإِنَّهُfor indeedلَمَّاwhenفُتِحَتْwere conqueredخَيْبَرُKhaybarقَالَhe saidلِرَسُولِto the Messengerاللَّهِ:of God:

for when Khaybar was conquered, he said to the Messenger of God:

إِنَّIndeedلِيfor me isعِنْدَwithامْرَأَةٍa womanمِنْfromقُرَيْشٍQurayshوَدِيعَةًa deposit

Indeed, I have a deposit with a woman from Quraysh

فَإِنْso ifأَذِنَpermitsلِيmeرَسُولُthe Messengerاللَّهِ،of God,صَلَّىmay Godاللَّهُbless himعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَلَّمَ،and grant him peace,

so if the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, permits me

أَنْthatأَكْذِبَI lieكَذْبَةًone lieفَلَعَلِّيperhaps Iأَسْتَلُّmay retrieveوَدِيعَتِي.my deposit.

to tell a lie so that I may retrieve my deposit.

قَالَ:He said:فَرَخَّصَSo he permittedلَهُ.him.

He said: So he permitted him.

فَقَدِمَSo he arrived inمَكَّةَMakkahفَأَخْبَرَهُمْand informed themأَنَّهُthat heتَرَكَleftرَسُولَthe Messengerاللَّهِ،of God,صَلَّىmay Godاللَّهُbless himعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَلَّمَ،and grant him peace,

So he arrived in Makkah and informed them that he had left the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace,

أَسِيراًas a captiveفِيinأَيْدِيهِمْtheir handsيَأْتَمِرُونَthey were deliberatingفِيهِ،concerning him,

as a captive in their hands, while they were deliberating concerning him,

قَائِلٌa speakerيَقُولُsaysيُقْتَلُhe will be killedوَقَائِلٌand a speakerيَقُولُsaysلَاnoبَلْratherيُبْعَثُhe is sentإِلَىtoقَوْمِهِhis peopleفَيَكُونُand that will beذَلِكَa favorمِنَّةً.granted.

one speaker saying he will be killed, and another saying no, rather he will be sent to his people and that will be a favor granted.
