قَالَHeوَقَالَAnd saidعَبْدُAbdالْمَلِكِal-MalikبْنُbinمَرْوَانَMarwanلِسَلَمَةَto SalamaبْنِbinزَيْدٍZaydالْفَهْمِيِّal-Fahmi:أَيُّ"Whichالزَّمَانِtimeأَدْرَكْتَdid you experienceأَفْضَلَas bestوَأَيُّand whichالْمُلُوكِ؟kings?"
He said: And Abd al-Malik bin Marwan said to Salama bin Zayd al-Fahmi: Which time did you experience as best, and which kings?
فَقَالَ:He said:أَمَّا"As forالْمُلُوكُthe kings,فَلَمْI have not seenأَرَإِلَّاexceptذَامّاًone who blamesأَوْorحَامِداً،one who praises.
He said: As for the kings, I have not seen except one who blames or one who praises.
وَأَمَّاAnd as forالزَّمَانُtime,فَيَضَعُit lowersقَوْماًsome peopleوَيَرْفَعُand raisesآخَرِينَothers,وَكُلُّهُمْand all of themيَذُمُّblameزَمَانَهُtheir time
And as for time, it lowers some people and raises others, and all of them blame their time.
لِأَنَّهُBecause itيُبْلِيmakes oldجَدِيدَهُمْtheir new things,وَيَطْوِيand rolls upأَعْمَارَهُمْtheir lives,وَيُهْرِمُand agesصَغِيرَهُمْtheir young ones,وَكُلُّand everythingمَاthatفِيهِis in itمُنْقَطِعٌis cut offإِلَّاexceptالْأَمَلَ.hope.
Because it makes their new things old, rolls up their lives, ages their young ones, and everything in it is cut off except hope.
قَالَ:He said:فَأَخْبِرْنِي"Then tell meعَنْaboutفَهْمٍ.Fahm."
He said: Then tell me about Fahm.
قَالَ:He said:هُمْ"They areكَمَاasقَالَthe poetالشَّاعِرُ:said:
He said: They are as the poet said:
دَرَجَPassed awayاللَّيْلُthe nightوَالنَّهَارُand the dayعَلَىoverفَهْمِFahmبْنِbinعَمْرٍوAmr,فَأَصْبَحُواso they becameكَالرَّمِيمِlike decayed bones
The night and day passed over Fahm bin Amr, so they became like decayed bones.
وَخَلَتْAnd emptiedدَارُهُمْtheir abodeفَأَحْمَتْand it becameيَبَاباًa wastelandبَعْدَafterعِزٍّgloryوَثَرْوَةٍand wealthوَنَعِيمِand bliss
And their abode became empty, turning into a wasteland after glory, wealth, and bliss.
وَكَذَاكَAnd likewiseالزَّمَانُtimeيَذْهَبُtakes awayبِالنَّاسِthe peopleوَتَبْقَىand remainدِيَارُهُمْtheir homesكَالرُّسُومِlike traces
And likewise time takes away the people, and their homes remain like traces.
قَالَ:He said:فَمَنْ"So whoيَقُولُrecitesمِنْكُمْ:among you:"
He said: So who among you recites:
رَأَيْتُI sawالنَّاسَpeopleمُذْsinceخُلِقُواthey were createdوَكَانُواand existed,يُحِبُّونَthey loveالْغَنِيَّthe rich manمِنَamongالرِّجَالِmen
I saw that people, since they were created and existed, love the rich man among men.
وَإِنْEven ifكَانَthe rich manالْغَنِيُّisأَقَلَّlesserخَيْراًin goodnessبَخِيلاًand stingyبِالْقَلِيلِwith littleمِنَofالنَّوَالِgiving.
Even if the rich man is lesser in goodness and stingy with a little giving.
فَمَاSo I do notأَدْرِيknowعَلَامَfor whatوَفِيمَand about whatهَذَاis this,وَمَاذَاand whatيَرْتَجُونَdo they hope forمِنَfromالْبَخَالِthe miser?
So I do not know for what and about what this is, and what they hope for from the miser.
أَلِلْدُّنْيَاIs it for the world?فَلَيْسَFor there isهُنَاكَnoدُنْيَاworld there,وَلَاnorيُرْجَىis hope placedلِحَادِثَةِin the misfortuneاللَّيَالِيof nights.
Is it for the world? For there is no world there, nor is hope placed in the misfortune of nights.
قَالَ:He said:أَنَا"I do,وَقَدْand indeedكَتَمْتُهَا.I have kept it secret."
He said: I do, and indeed I have kept it secret.
قَالَ:He said:وَلَمَّاAnd whenدَخَلَenteredعَلِيُّAliبْنُbinأَبِيAbiطَالِبٍ،Talib,رَضِيَmay Allah be pleasedاللَّهُwith him,عَنْهُ،enteredالْمَدَائِنَAl-Mada'in,نَظَرَhe lookedإِلَىatإِيوَانِthe Archكِسْرَىof Chosroesفَأَنْشَدَهُand there recited to himبَعْضُsomeمَنْof those whoحَضَرَهُwere presentقَوْلَthe verse ofالْأَسْوَدِal-Aswadبْنِbinيَعْفُرَ:Ya'fur:
He said: And when Ali bin Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him, entered Al-Mada'in, he looked at the Arch of Chosroes, and some of those present recited to him the verse of al-Aswad bin Ya'fur:
مَاذَا"Whatأُؤَمِّلُdo I hope forبَعْدَafterآلِthe family ofمُحَرِّقٍMuharriq,تَرَكُواwho leftمَنَازِلَهُمْtheir homesوَبَعْدَand afterإِيَادِIyad?"
What do I hope for after the family of Muharriq, who left their homes and after Iyad?
أَهْلِ"The people ofالْخَوَرْنَقِAl-Khawarnaq,وَالسَّدِيرِAl-Sudayr,وَبَارِقٍ،and Bariq,وَالْقَصْرِand the palaceذِيpossessingالشُّرُفَاتِturretsمِنْfromسِنْدَادَSindad.
The people of Al-Khawarnaq, Al-Sudayr, and Bariq, and the palace possessing turrets from Sindad.
نَزَلُواThey settledبِأَنْقَرَةٍin Anqaraيَسِيلُwhere flowsعَلَيْهِمْupon themمَاءُthe waterالْفُرَاتِof the Euphratesيَسِيلُflowingمِنْfromأَطْوَادِmountains.
They settled in Anqara where the water of the Euphrates flows upon them, flowing from mountains.
أَرْضٌ"An earthتَخَيَّرَهَاchosenلِطِيبِfor the pleasantness ofمَقِيلِهَاits resting placeكَعْبُby Ka'bبْنُbinمَامَةَMamaوَابْنُand the son ofأُمِّUmmدُؤَادِDuo'ad.
An earth chosen for the pleasantness of its resting place by Ka'b bin Mama and the son of Umm Duo'ad.
جَرَتِBlewالرِّيَاحُthe windsعَلَىoverمَحَلِّthe site ofدِيَارِهِمْtheir homesفَكَأَنَّمَاso it is as ifكَانُواthey wereعَلَىuponمِعَادِan appointment.
The winds blew over the site of their homes, so it is as if they were upon an appointment.
فَأَرَىSo I seeالنَّعِيمَblissوَكُلُّand everythingمَاthatيُلْهَىone is amusedبِهِbyيَوْماًwill one dayيَصِيرُbecomeإِلَىtoبِلًىruinوَنَفَادِand exhaustion.
So I see that bliss and everything one is amused by will one day become ruin and exhaustion.
فَقَالَSo saidعَلِيٌّ،Ali,رَضِيَmay Allah be pleasedاللَّهُwith him:عَنْهُ:And more eloquentأَبْلَغُthan thatمِنْisذَلِكَthe sayingقَوْلُof Allahاللَّهِthe Majesticجَلَّand Exalted:وَعَزَّ:"How manyكَمْgardensتَرَكُواdid they leaveمِنْbehindجَنَّاتٍand springsوَعُيُونٍand cropsوَزُرُوعٍand a nobleوَمَقَامٍstationكَرِيمٍand bountyوَنِعْمَةٍwhereinكَانُواthey wereفِيهَاrejoicing.فَاكِهِينَThusكَذَلِكَand We causedوَأَوْرَثْنَاهَاanother peopleقَوْماًto inheritآخَرِينَthem."
So Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, said: More eloquent than that is the saying of Allah the Majestic and Exalted: "How many gardens and springs did they leave behind, and crops and a noble station, and bounty wherein they were rejoicing. Thus, and We caused another people to inherit them."
وَقَالَAnd saidعَبْدُAbdالْمَلِكِal-Malikبْنُbinالْمُعْتَزِّ:al-Mu'tazz:أَهْلُ"The people ofالدُّنْيَاthe worldكَصُورَةٍare like an imageفِيinصَحِيفَةٍa page;كُلَّمَاwheneverنُشِرَsome of itبَعْضُهَاis unrolled,طُوِيَsome of itبَعْضُهَا.is rolled up."
And Abd al-Malik bin al-Mu'tazz said: The people of the world are like an image in a page; whenever some of it is unrolled, some of it is rolled up.
وَقَالَ:And he said:أَهْلُ"The people ofالدُّنْيَاthe worldكَرَكْبٍare like a caravanيُسَارُbeing traveledبِهِمْwithوَهُمْwhile theyنِيَامٌ.are asleep."
And he said: The people of the world are like a caravan being traveled with while they are asleep.
وَقَالَAnd saidبَعْضُهُمْ:someone:طَلَاقُ"Divorcingالدُّنْيَاthe worldمَهْرُis the dowerالْجَنَّةِ.of Paradise."
And someone said: Divorcing the world is the dower of Paradise.
وَذَكَرَAnd mentionedأَعْرَابِيٌّa Bedouinالدُّنْيَاthe worldفَقَالَ:and said:هِيَ"It isجَمَّةُfull ofالْمَصَائِبِcalamities,رَنِقَةُturbidالْمَشَارِبِ،in its drinking places,لَاit does notتُمَتِّعُكَlet you enjoyالدَّهْرَfor longبِصَاحِبٍ.with a companion."
And a Bedouin mentioned the world and said: It is full of calamities, turbid in its drinking places, and does not let you enjoy a companion for long.
وَقَالَAnd saidأَبُوAbuالدَّرْدَاءِ:al-Darda':مِنْ"Fromهَوَانِthe insignificanceالدُّنْيَاof the worldعَلَىtoاللَّهِAllahجَلَّthe Majesticوَعَزَّand Exaltedأَنَّهُis thatلَاHe is notيُعْصَىdisobeyedإِلَّاexceptفِيهَاin it,وَلَاand whatيُنَالُis with Himمَاis notعِنْدَهُattainedإِلَّاexceptبِتَرْكِهَا.by leaving it."
And Abu al-Darda' said: From the insignificance of the world to Allah the Majestic and Exalted is that He is not disobeyed except in it, and what is with Him is not attained except by leaving it.
وَقِيلَ:And it was said:إِذَا"Whenأَقْبَلَتِturnsالدُّنْيَاthe worldعَلَىtowardامْرِئٍa man,أَعَارَتْهُit lends himمَحَاسِنَthe good traitsغَيْرِهِ،of someone else,وَإِذَاand whenأَدْبَرَتْit turns awayعَنْهُfrom him,سَلَبَتْهُit strips him ofمَحَاسِنَthe good traitsنَفْسِهِ.of his own self."
And it was said: When the world turns toward a man, it lends him the good traits of someone else, and when it turns away from him, it strips him of the good traits of his own self.

قَالَSaidالْأَصْمَعِيُّ:al-Asma'i:وَوُجِدَ"And it was foundفِيinقُبَّةٍa domeلِسُلَيْمَانَof Solomonبْنِbinدَاوُدَ،David,عَلَيْهِupon himالسَّلَامُ،be peace,مَكْتُوبٌ:written:"
al-Asma'i said: And it was found in a dome of Solomon bin David, upon him be peace, written:
وَمَنْ"And whoeverيَحْمَدِpraisesالدُّنْيَاthe worldلِشَيْءٍfor somethingيَنَالُهُhe attains,فَسَوْفَthen soonلَعَمْرِيby my lifeعَنْafterقَلِيلٍa little whileيَلُومُهَاhe will blame it.
And whoever praises the world for something he attains, then soon, by my life, after a little while he will blame it.
إِذَاWhenأَدْبَرَتْit turns awayكَانَتْit isعَلَىuponالنَّاسِpeopleحَسْرَةًa regret,وَإِنْand whenأَقْبَلَتْit turns toward themكَانَتْit isكَثِيراًmuchهُمُومُهَاits worries.
When it turns away, it is a regret upon people, and when it turns toward them, its worries are much.
وَكَانَAnd usedإِبْرَاهِيمُIbrahimبْنُbinأَدْهَمَAdhamيُنْشِدُ:to recite:
And Ibrahim bin Adham used to recite:
نُرَقِّعُ"We patchدُنْيَانَاour worldly lifeبِتَمْزِيقِby tearingدِينِنَاour religion,فَلَاso neitherدِينُنَاour religion remainsيَبْقَىnorوَلَاwhatمَاweنُرَقِّعُpatch."
We patch our worldly life by tearing our religion, so neither our religion remains nor what we patch.
وَقَالَAnd saidأَبُوAbuالْعَتَاهِيَةِ:al-Atahiyah:
And Abu al-Atahiyah said:
يَا"Oمَنْyou whoتَرَفَّعَexalts himselfبِالدُّنْيَاwith the worldوَزِينَتِهَاand its adornment,لَيْسَexaltationالتَّرَفُّعُis notرَفْعَraisingالطِّينِclayبِالطِّينِwith clay.
O you who exalts himself with the world and its adornment, exaltation is not raising clay with clay.
إِذَاIfأَرَدْتَyou wantشَرِيفَthe noble oneالْقَوْمِof the peopleكُلِّهِمْall of them,فَانْظُرْthen lookإِلَىatمَلِكٍa kingفِيinزِيِّthe garbمِسْكِينٍof a poor person.
If you want the noble one of the people all of them, then look at a king in the garb of a poor person.
وَلِآخَرَ:And for another:
And for another:
هَبِ"Supposeالدُّنْيَاthe worldتُسَاقُis drivenإِلَيْكَtoward youعَفْواً،easily,أَلَيْسَis notمَصِيرُthe destinationذَاكَof thatالزَّوَالَdecline?
Suppose the world is driven toward you easily, is not the destination of that decline?
فَمَاSo whatتَرْجُوdo you hope forبِشَيْءٍin somethingلَيْسَthat does notيَبْقَى،remain,وَشِيكاًsoonمَاwhatتُغَيِّرُهُchanges itاللَّيَالِيthe nights?
So what do you hope for in something that does not remain, soon what changes it the nights?
مَحْمُودٌMahmudالْوَرَّاقُ:al-Warraq:
Mahmud al-Warraq:
هِيَ"It isالدُّنْيَاthe world,فَلَاso let notيُغَرَّنَكَdeceive youمِنْهَاfrom itمَخَايِلُphantomsتَسْتَفِزُّthat provokeذَوِيpossessors ofالْعُقُولِintellects.
It is the world, so let not phantoms from it deceive you that provoke possessors of intellects.
أَقَلُّThe leastقَلِيلِهَاof its littleيَكْفِيكَis enough for youمِنْهَا،from it,وَلَكِنْbutلَيْسَyou areتَقْنَعُnot contentبِالْقَلِيلِwith the little.
The least of its little is enough for you from it, but you are not content with the little.
تُشِيدُYou buildوَتَبْتَنِيand constructفِيinكُلِّeveryيَوْمٍ،day,وَأَنْتَwhile youعَلَىare uponالتَّجَهُّزِpreparingوَالرَّحِيلِand departing.
You build and construct in every day, while you are upon preparing and departing.
وَمَنْAnd whoهَذَاis thisالَّذِيwhoيُبْقِيkeepsعَلَيْهَاit enduring,مُضَارِبُهُits striversبِمَدْرَجَةِon the pathway ofالسُّيُولِfloods?
And who is this who keeps it enduring, while its strivers are on the pathway of floods?
وَلِآخَرَ:And for another:
And for another:
أَيَا"Oدُنْيَاworld,حَسَرْتِyou have removedلَنَاfor usقِنَاعاً،a veil,وَكَانَand wasجَمَالُthe beautyوَجْهِكِof your faceفِيinالنِّقَابِthe veil.
O world, you have removed a veil for us, and the beauty of your face was in the veil.
دِيَارٌAbodesطَالَfor longمَاthatحُجِبَتْwere veiledوَعَزَّتْ،and inaccessible,فَأَصْبَحَso becameإِذْنُهَاpermission to enter themسَهْلَeasyالْحِجَابِof access.
Abodes that for long were veiled and inaccessible, so permission to enter them became easy of access.
وَقَدْAnd indeedكَانَتْwereلَهَاto itالْأَيَّامُthe daysذَلَّتْ،subservient,فَقَدْso nowقُرِنَتْit is pairedبِأَيَّامٍwith daysصِعَابِdifficult.
And indeed the days were subservient to it, so now it is paired with difficult days.
كَأَنَّAs ifالْعَيْشَlifeفِيهَاin itكَانَwasظِلّاًa shadeيُقَلِّبُهُturning itالزَّمَانُtimeإِلَىtowardذَهَابِdeparture.
As if life in it was a shade turning it time toward departure.
وَلِآخَرَ:And for another:
And for another:
دُنْيَا"A worldتَدَاوَلَهَاpassed aroundالْعِبَادُby servants,ذَمِيمَةٌ،blameworthy,شِيبَتْmixedبِأَكْرَهَwith more hatefulمِنْthanنَقِيعِthe infusion ofالْحَنْظَلِcolocynth.
A world passed around by servants, blameworthy, mixed with something more hateful than the infusion of colocynth.
وَثَبَاتُAnd constancy ofدُنْيَاa worldلَاthat does notتَزَالُceaseمُلِمَّةًbringing afflictionsمِنْهَاfrom it,فَجَائِعُtragediesمِثْلُlikeوَقْعِthe striking ofالْجَنْدَلِboulders.
And constancy of a world that does not cease bringing afflictions from it, tragedies like the striking of boulders.
وَلِآخَرَAnd for anotherبَيْتٌ:verse:
And for another verse:
