وَعَنْAnd on the authority ofأَبِيAbiأُمَامَةَUmamahالْبَاهِلِيِّAl-Bahiliقَالَ:who said:
And on the authority of Abu Umamah al-Bahili who said:
قَالَSaidرَسُولُthe Messenger ofاللَّهِ،Allah,صَلَّىmay Allah's peaceاللَّهُand blessingsعَلَيْهِbe upon him:وَسَلَّمَ:and peace:
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
رَحِمَMay Allah have mercyاللَّهُonأَبَاAbuبَكْرٍ،Bakr,زَوَّجَنِيhe married me toابْنَتَهُhis daughterوَحَمَلَنِيand carried meإِلَىtoدَارِthe abode ofالْهِجْرَةِmigrationوَعَتَقَand freedبِلَالًاBilalمِنْfromمَالِهِ.his wealth.
May Allah have mercy on Abu Bakr, he married his daughter to me, carried me to the abode of migration, and freed Bilal with his wealth.
وَعَنْAnd on the authority ofأَنَسٍAnasعَنْfromأَبِيAbuبَكْرٍ،Bakr,رَضِيَmay Allahاللَّهُbe pleasedعَنْهُ،with him,قَالَ:who said:
And on the authority of Anas from Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, who said:
قُلْتُI saidلِلنَّبِيِّ،to the Prophet,صَلَّىmay Allah's peaceاللَّهُand blessingsعَلَيْهِbe upon him,وَسَلَّمَ،and peace,وَنَحْنُwhile we wereفِيinالْغَارِ:the cave:
I said to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, while we were in the cave:
لَوْIfأَنَّthatأَحَدَهُمْone of themنَظَرَlookedفِيatقَدَمَيْهِhis two feetلَأَبْصَرَنَا،he would have seen us,فَقَالَ:so he said:
If one of them were to look at his feet, he would have seen us. So he said:
يَاOأَبَاAbuبَكْرٍBakr,مَاwhatظَنُّكَis your thoughtبِاثْنَيْنِabout twoاللَّهُAllahجَلَّMajesticوَعَزَّand Mightyثَالِثُهُمَا!is the third of them!
"O Abu Bakr, what is your thought about two [people] of whom Allah, Majestic and Mighty, is the third?"
وَعَنْAnd on the authority ofأَبِيAbuسَعِيدٍSaidالْخُدْرِيِّ،al-Khudri,رَضِيَmay Allahاللَّهُbe pleasedعَنْهُ،with him,قَالَ:who said:
And on the authority of Abu Said al-Khudri, may Allah be pleased with him, who said:
خَرَجَCame outعَلَيْنَاto usرَسُولُthe Messenger ofاللَّهِAllahفِيduringمَرَضِهِhis illnessالَّذِيin whichمَاتَhe diedفِيهِwhileوَهُوَhe wasعَاصِبٌbindingرَأْسَهُhis headحَتَّىuntilصَعِدَhe ascendedالْمِنْبَرَthe pulpitفَقَالَ:and said:
The Messenger of Allah came out to us during his illness in which he died, with his head bound with a cloth, until he ascended the pulpit and said:
إِنِّيIndeed, Iقَائِمٌam standingالسَّاعَةَat this momentعَلَىatالْحَوْضِthe Basinوَإِنَّand indeedعَبْدًاa servantعُرِضَتْwas offeredعَلَيْهِto himالدُّنْيَاthe worldوَزِينَتُهَاand its adornmentفَاخْتَارَso he choseالْآخِرَةَ،the Hereafter,فَلَمْand noneيَفْطِنْcomprehendedلَهَاthatأَحَدٌanyoneإِلَّاexceptأَبُوAbuبَكْرٍ،Bakr,رَضِيَmay Allahاللَّهُbe pleasedعَنْهُwith himفَقَالَ:so he said:
Indeed, I am standing at this moment at the Basin. A servant was offered the world and its adornment, but he chose the Hereafter. No one comprehended that except Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, who said:
بِأَبِيMay my fatherأَنْتَbe sacrificed for youوَأُمِّيand my motherبَلْnayنَفْدِيكَwe ransom youبِآبَائِنَاwith our fathersوَأَبْنَائِنَاand our sonsوَأَنْفُسِنَاand our soulsوَأَمْوَالِنَا!and our wealth!
"May my father and mother be sacrificed for you, nay, we ransom you with our fathers, our sons, our souls, and our wealth!"
وَبَكَى،And he wept,فَقَالَ:so he said:لَاDoتَبْكِnot weepيَاOأَبَاAbuبَكْرٍ،Bakr,
And he wept. He said: "Do not weep, O Abu Bakr,
إِنَّIndeedمِنْamongأَمَنِّthe most generousالنَّاسِof peopleعَلَيَّto meفِيinصُحْبَتِهِhis companionshipوَمَالِهِand his wealthأَبُوis Abuبَكْرٍ،Bakr,
for the person who has been most generous to me with his companionship and his wealth is Abu Bakr.
وَلَوْAnd ifكُنْتُI wereمُتَّخِذًاto takeخَلِيلًاan intimate friendمِنَfromالنَّاسِthe peopleلَاتَّخَذْتُI would have takenأَبَاAbuبَكْرٍ.Bakr.
And if I were to take an intimate friend from the people, I would have taken Abu Bakr.
وَلَكِنْButأُخُوَّةُthe brotherhood ofالْإِسْلَامِIslamلَاthere remainsيَبْقَىnoفِيinالْمَسْجِدِthe mosqueبَابٌdoorإِلَّاexceptسُدَّit is closedإِلَّاexceptبَابَthe door ofأَبِيAbuبَكْرٍ.Bakr.
However, [there is] the brotherhood of Islam. There remains no door in the mosque except that it is closed, except the door of Abu Bakr.
فَبَكَىSo weptأَبُوAbuبَكْرٍBakrوَقَالَ:and said:أَنَاIوَمَالِيand my wealthلَكَare for youيَاOرَسُولَMessenger ofاللَّهِ.Allah.
So Abu Bakr wept and said: "I and my wealth are for you, O Messenger of Allah."
وَعَنْAnd on the authority ofابْنِIbnالْمُنْكَدِرِal-Munkadirقَالَ:who said:
And on the authority of Ibn al-Munkadir who said:
قَالَSaidرَسُولُthe Messenger ofاللَّهِ،Allah,صَلَّىmay Allah's peaceاللَّهُand blessingsعَلَيْهِbe upon him:وَسَلَّمَ:and peace:
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
دَعُوا"Leaveلِيfor meصَاحِبِيmy companion,إِنِّيindeed Iبُعِثْتُwas sentوَقَالَand the peopleالنَّاسُsaidكَذَبْتَ'You have lied,'وَقَالَand he saidلِيto meصَدَقْتَ،'You have spoken the truth,'يَعْنِيmeaningأَبَاAbuبَكْرٍ،Bakr,رَضِيَmay Allahاللَّهُbe pleasedعَنْهُ.with him.
"Leave for me my companion, indeed I was sent and the people said, 'You have lied,' and he said to me, 'You have spoken the truth,'" meaning Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him.
وَعَنْAnd on the authority ofمُحَمَّدِMuhammadبْنِson ofعُبَيْدٍUbaidعَنْfromإِسْمَاعِيلَIsmailبْنِson ofأَبِيAbuخَالِدٍKhalidعَنْfromقَيْسِQaisبْنِson ofأَبِيAbuحَازِمٍHazimقَالَ:who said:
And on the authority of Muhammad ibn Ubaid from Ismail ibn Abu Khalid from Qais ibn Abu Hazim who said:
بَعَثَSentرَسُولُthe Messenger ofاللَّهِ،Allah,صَلَّىmay Allah's peaceاللَّهُand blessingsعَلَيْهِbe upon himوَسَلَّمَ،and peace,عَمْروAmrبْنَson ofالْعَاصِal-Asفِيonغَزْوَةِthe expedition ofذَاتِDhatالسَّلَاسِلِal-Salasilفَجَاءَand he cameوَقَدْwhileظَهَرَ،he was victorious,فَقَالَ:so he said:
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, sent Amr ibn al-As on the expedition of Dhat al-Salasil, and he returned victorious. He said:
يَا"OرَسُولَMessenger ofاللَّهِAllah,أَيُّwhichالنَّاسِpeopleأَحَبُّare most belovedإِلَيْكَ؟to you?"قَالَ:He said:عَائِشَةُ،"Aisha."
"O Messenger of Allah, which people are most beloved to you?" He said: "Aisha."
قَالَ:He said:لَسْتُ"I am notأَسْأَلُكَasking youعَنِaboutالنِّسَاءِ،women."قَالَ:He said:أَبُوهَا"Her fatherإِذَاthen,تُؤْنِسُ.is most comforting."
He said: "I am not asking you about women." He said: "Her father then."
وَعَنْAnd on the authority ofالْحَسَنِal-Hasanقَالَ:who said:
And on the authority of al-Hasan who said:
قَالَSaidرَسُولُthe Messenger ofاللَّهِ،Allah,صَلَّىmay Allah's peaceاللَّهُand blessingsعَلَيْهِbe upon him:وَسَلَّمَ:and peace:
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
يَجِيءُ"There will comeيَوْمَon the Day ofالْقِيَامَةِResurrectionرَجُلٌa manإِلَىtoبَابِthe gate ofالْجَنَّةِParadise,لَيْسَthere is notمِنْهَاfrom itبَابٌa gateإِلَّاexceptوَعَلَيْهِupon itمَلَكٌis an angelيَهْتِفُcalling outبِهِto him,هَلُمَّ'Come here,هَلُمَّcome here,ادْخُلْ،enter.'"فَقَالَSo saidأَبُوAbuبَكْرٍ،Bakr,رَضِيَmay Allahاللَّهُbe pleasedعَنْهُ:with him:
"There will come on the Day of Resurrection a man to the gate of Paradise, and there is not a gate among them except that upon it is an angel calling out to him, 'Come here, come here, enter.'" So Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, said:
إِنَّ"Indeedهَذَاthisلَسَعِيدٌ،is truly fortunate!"قَالَ:He said:هُوَ"He isابْنُthe son ofأَبِيAbiقُحَافَةَ.Quhafah."
"Indeed this is truly fortunate!" He said: "He is the son of Abi Quhafah."
وَعَنْAnd on the authority ofسُلَيْمَانَSulaimanبْنِson ofيَسَارٍYasarأَنَّthatرَسُولَthe Messenger ofاللَّهِ،Allah,صَلَّىmay Allah's peaceاللَّهُand blessingsعَلَيْهِbe upon him,وَسَلَّمَ،and peace,قَالَ:said:
And on the authority of Sulaiman ibn Yasar that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
فِي"Inالْمُؤْمِنِthe believerثَلَاثُمِائَةٍare three hundredوَسِتُّونَand sixtyخَصْلَةًtraitsمِنَofالْخَيْرِgood,إِذَاifجَاءَhe comesبِوَاحِدَةٍwith one of themدَخَلَhe entersالْجَنَّةَ،Paradise."قَالَSaidأَبُوAbuبَكْرٍ،Bakr,رَضِيَmay Allahاللَّهُbe pleasedعَنْهُ:with him:
"In the believer are three hundred and sixty traits of good, if he comes with one of them he enters Paradise." Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, said:
بِأَبِي"May my fatherأَنْتَbe sacrificed for youوَأُمِّيand my mother,أَفِيَّis thereمِنْهَاof themشَيْءٌ؟anything in me?"قَالَ:He said:هِيَ"They areكُلُّهَاall of themفِيكَin youيَاOأَبَاAbuبَكْرٍ.Bakr."
"May my father and mother be sacrificed for you, is there anything of them in me?" He said: "They are all in you, O Abu Bakr."
وَعَنْAnd on the authority ofابْنِIbnعُمَرَ،Umar,رَضِيَmay Allahاللَّهُbe pleasedعَنْهُ،with him,قَالَ:who said:
And on the authority of Ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, who said:
بَيْنَاWhileالنَّبِيُّ،the Prophet,صَلَّىmay Allah's peaceاللَّهُand blessingsعَلَيْهِbe upon him,وَسَلَّمَ،and peace,جَالِسٌwas sittingوَعِنْدَهُand with him wasأَبُوAbuبَكْرٍ،Bakr,رَضِيَmay Allahاللَّهُbe pleasedعَنْهُ،with him,وَعَلَيْهِand upon himعَبَاءَةٌwas a cloakقَدْthatخَلَّهَاhe had pinnedفِيatصَدْرِهِhis chestبِخِلَالٍwith a pinإِذْwhenنَزَلَdescendedعَلَيْهِupon himجِبْرِيلُ،Gabriel,عَلَيْهِpeaceالسَّلَامُ،be upon him,فَقَالَ:and said:
While the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was sitting with Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, wearing a cloak that he had pinned at his chest with a pin, Gabriel, peace be upon him, descended upon him and said:
يَا"OرَسُولَMessenger ofاللَّهِAllah,مَاwhyلِيdo IأَرَىseeأَبَاAbuبَكْرٍBakrعَلَيْهِwearingعَبَاءَةٌa cloakقَدْthatخَلَّهَاhe has pinnedفِيatصَدْرِهِ؟his chest?"قَالَ:He said:
"O Messenger of Allah, why do I see Abu Bakr wearing a cloak that he has pinned at his chest?" He said:
أَنْفَقَ"He spentمَالَهُhis wealthعَلَيَّon meقَبْلَbeforeالْفَتْحِ،the Conquest."قَالَ:He said:
"He spent his wealth on me before the Conquest." He said:
فَأَقْرِئْهُ"So conveyمِنَfromاللَّهِAllahعَزَّAlmighty andوَجَلَّMajesticالسَّلَامَgreetingsوَقُلْand sayلَهُto himيَقُولُsaysلَكَto youرَبُّكَyour LordتَبَارَكَBlessedوَتَعَالَى:and Exalted:
"So convey to him greetings from Allah, Almighty and Majestic, and say to him, your Lord, Blessed and Exalted, says to you:
أَرَاضٍ"Are you pleasedأَنْتَyouعَنِّيwith Meفِيinفَقْرِكَyour povertyأَمْorسَاخِطٌ؟displeased?"فَقَالَSo saidأَبُوAbuبَكْرٍ:Bakr:
'Are you pleased with Me in your poverty or displeased?'" So Abu Bakr said:
أَعَلَى"Is it againstرَبِّيmy Lordأَغْضَبُ!that I would be angry?!أَنَاIعَنْwithرَبِّيmy Lordرَاضٍ.am pleased.
"Is it against my Lord that I would be angry?! I am pleased with my Lord."
وَعَنْAnd on the authority ofعَلِيِّAliبْنِson ofأَبِيAbuطَالِبٍ،Talib,رَضِيَmay Allahاللَّهُbe pleasedعَنْهُ،with him,قَالَ:who said:
And on the authority of Ali ibn Abu Talib, may Allah be pleased with him, who said:
كُنْتُI wasجَالِسًاsittingعِنْدَnearالنَّبِيِّ،the Prophet,صَلَّىmay Allah's peaceاللَّهُand blessingsعَلَيْهِbe upon him,وَسَلَّمَ،and peace,إِذْwhenطَلَعَappearedأَبُوAbuبَكْرٍBakrوَعُمَرُ،and Umar,رَضِيَmay Allahاللَّهُbe pleasedعَنْهُمَا،with both of them,فَقَالَ،so he said,عَلَيْهِupon himالصَّلَاةُbe the prayerوَالسَّلَامُ:and peace:
I was sitting near the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, when Abu Bakr and Umar, may Allah be pleased with both of them, appeared. So he, upon him be prayer and peace, said:
هَذَانِ"These twoسَيِّدَاare the masters ofكُهُولِthe middle-agedأَهْلِpeople ofالْجَنَّةِParadiseمِنَfromالْأَوَّلِينَthe firstوَالْآخِرِينَand the last,مِمَّنْof those whoمَضَىpassed awayوَمِمَّنْand of those whoبَقِيَremainإِلَّاexceptالنَّبِيِّينَthe Prophetsوَالْمُرْسَلِينَ،and Messengers.لَاDo notتُخْبِرْهُمَاtell themيَاOعَلِيُّ.Ali."
"These two are the masters of the middle-aged people of Paradise from the first and the last, of those who passed away and of those who remain, except the Prophets and Messengers. Do not tell them, O Ali."
وَعَنْAnd on the authority ofجَابِرٍJabirقَالَ:who said:
And on the authority of Jabir who said:
كُنْتُI wasمَعَwithرَسُولِthe Messenger ofاللَّهِ،Allah,صَلَّىmay Allah's peaceاللَّهُand blessingsعَلَيْهِbe upon him,وَسَلَّمَ،and peace,فَسَمِعْتُهُand I heard himيَقُولُ:saying:
I was with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and I heard him saying:
يَطْلُعُ"There will appearعَلَيْنَاto usمِنْfromهَذَاthisفَجِّmountain passرَجُلٌa manمِنْfromأَهْلِthe people ofالْجَنَّةِ،Paradise."فَطَلَعَSo appearedأَبُوAbuبَكْرٍ،Bakr,رَضِيَmay Allahاللَّهُbe pleasedعَنْهُ،with him.
"There will appear to us from this mountain pass a man from the people of Paradise." So Abu Bakr appeared, may Allah be pleased with him.
ثُمَّThenقَالَhe said:يَطْلُعُ"There will appearعَلَيْنَاto usمِنْfromهَذَاthisفَجِّmountain passرَجُلٌa manمِنْfromأَهْلِthe people ofالْجَنَّةِ،Paradise."فَطَلَعَSo appearedعُمَرُ،Umar,رَضِيَmay Allahاللَّهُbe pleasedعَنْهُ،with him.
Then he said: "There will appear to us from this mountain pass a man from the people of Paradise." So Umar appeared, may Allah be pleased with him.
ثُمَّThenقَالَ:he said:يَطْلُعُ"There will appearعَلَيْنَاto usمِنْfromهَذَاthisفَجِّmountain passرَجُلٌa manمِنْfromأَهْلِthe people ofالْجَنَّةِ،Paradise.اللَّهُمَّO Allah,اجْعَلْهُmake himعَلِيًّا!Ali!"فَطَلَعَSo appearedعَلِيٌّ،Ali,رَضِيَmay Allahاللَّهُbe pleasedعَنْهُ.with him.
Then he said: "There will appear to us from this mountain pass a man from the people of Paradise. O Allah, make him Ali!" So Ali appeared, may Allah be pleased with him.
وَعَنْAnd on the authority ofابْنِIbnعَبَّاسٍAbbasقَالَ:who said:
And on the authority of Ibn Abbas who said:
قَالَSaidأَبُوAbuبَكْرٍ:Bakr:يَا"OرَسُولَMessenger ofاللَّهِAllah,مَاhowأَحْسَنَbeautiful isهَذِهِthisالْآيَةَ!verse!"قَالَ:He said:أَيَّتُهَا؟"Which one?"
Abu Bakr said: "O Messenger of Allah, how beautiful is this verse!" He said: "Which one?"
قَالَHe said:قَوْلُ"The statement ofتَبَارَكَBlessedوَتَعَالَى:and Exalted:
He said: "The statement of Him, Blessed and Exalted:
يَا"Oأَيَّتُهَاyouالنَّفْسُsoulالْمُطْمَئِنَّةُat peaceارْجِعِيReturnإِلَىtoرَبِّكِyour Lordرَاضِيَةًwell-pleasedمَرْضِيَّةًand pleasingفَادْخُلِيAnd enterفِيamongعِبَادِيMy servantsوَادْخُلِيAnd enterجَنَّتِيMy Paradise
"O soul at peace, Return to your Lord well-pleased and pleasing, And enter among My servants, And enter My Paradise."
فَقَالَ:So he said:يَا"OأَبَاAbuبَكْرٍBakr,إِنَّindeedالْمَلَكَthe angelسَيَقُولُهَاwill say itلَكَ.to you."
So he said: "O Abu Bakr, indeed the angel will say it to you."
وَقِيلَ:And it was said:إِنَّهُthatلَمَّاwhenأَسْلَمَaccepted IslamأَبُوAbuقُحَافَةَQuhafahلَمْdid notيَعْلَمْknowأَبُوAbuبَكْرٍ،Bakr,رَضِيَmay Allahاللَّهُbe pleasedعَنْهُ،with him,بِإِسْلَامِهِabout his acceptance of Islamحَتَّىuntilدَخَلَhe enteredعَلَىuponالنَّبِيِّ،the Prophet,صَلَّىmay Allah's peaceاللَّهُand blessingsعَلَيْهِbe upon him,وَسَلَّمَ،and peace,فَقَالَ:and he said:
And it was said that when Abu Quhafah accepted Islam, Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, did not know about his acceptance of Islam until he entered upon the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and said:
أَلَا"Shall I notأُبَشِّرُكَgive you glad tidingsيَاOأَبَاAbuبَكْرٍBakrبِمَاwith whatيَسُرُّكَ؟pleases you?"قَالَ:He said:مِثْلُكَ"Someone like youيَاOرَسُولَMessenger ofاللَّهِAllahمَنْis the oneيُبَشِّرُwho gives glad tidingsبِالْخَيْرِ،of good,فَمَاso whatهِيَ؟is it?"
"Shall I not give you glad tidings, O Abu Bakr, with what pleases you?" He said: "Someone like you, O Messenger of Allah, is the one who gives glad tidings of good, so what is it?"
قَالَ:He said:أَسْلَمَ"Accepted IslamأَبُوAbuقُحَافَةَ!Quhafah!"قَالَ:He said:يَا"OرَسُولَMessenger ofاللَّهِAllah,لَوْifبَشَّرْتَنِيyou had given me glad tidingsبِإِسْلَامِof the Islam ofأَبِيAbuطَالِبٍTalibكَانَit would have beenأَقَرَّmore comfortingلِعَيْنِيto my eyeفَإِنَّهُfor indeed itأَقَرُّwas more comfortingلِعَيْنِكَ،to your eye."
He said: "Abu Quhafah has accepted Islam!" He said: "O Messenger of Allah, if you had given me glad tidings of the Islam of Abu Talib it would have been more comforting to my eye, for indeed it was more comforting to your eye."
فَبَكَىSo weptرَسُولُthe Messenger ofاللَّهِ،Allah,صَلَّىmay Allah's peaceاللَّهُand blessingsعَلَيْهِbe upon him,وَسَلَّمَ،and peace,حَتَّىuntilعَلَاroseبُكَاؤُهُhis weepingجَزَعًاout of griefلِمَاfor whatفَاتَهُhe missedمِنْofإِسْلَامِthe Islam ofأَبِيAbuطَالِبٍTalibوَقَالَ:and he said:
So the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, wept until his weeping grew loud out of grief for what he missed of the Islam of Abu Talib, and he said:
رَحِمَكَ"May Allah have mercy onاللَّهُyouيَاOأَبَاAbuبَكْرٍ،Bakr,"ثَلَاثًا.repeating it three times.
"May Allah have mercy on you, O Abu Bakr," [repeating it] three times.
[مَحَاسِنُ[The virtues ofعُمَرَUmarبْنِson ofالْخَطَّابِ]al-Khattab]
[The virtues of Umar ibn al-Khattab]
رِضْوَانُMay the pleasure ofاللَّهِAllahوَرَحْمَتُهُand His mercyعَلَيْهِbe upon him
May the pleasure of Allah and His mercy be upon him.
