وَحُكِيَAnd it was narratedعَنِfromالْأَوْزَاعِيِّAl-Awza'iقَالَ:who said:
And it was narrated from Al-Awza'i that he said:
بَعَثَsentإِلَيَّto meالْمَنْصُورُAl-Mansurفَقَالَ:and said:
Al-Mansur sent for me and said:
لِمَWhyتُبْطِئُdo you delayعَنَّا؟from us?
Why do you delay coming to us?
قُلْتُ:I said:
I said:
وَمَاAnd whatتُرِيدُdo you wantمِنَّا؟from us?
And what do you want from us?
قَالَ:He said:
He said:
لِأَخُذَthat I may takeعَنْكُمْfrom youوَأَقْتَبِسَand acquire knowledgeمِنْكُمْ.from you.
That I may take from you and acquire knowledge from you.
فَقُلْتُSo I saidلَهُ:to him:
So I said to him:
مَهْلًاSlow down
Slow down,
فَإِنَّfor indeedعُرْوَةَUrwahبْنَson ofرُوَيْمٍRuwaymأَخْبَرَنِيinformed me
for indeed Urwah ibn Ruwaym informed me
أَنَّthatنَبِيَّProphetاللَّهِ،of Allah,صَلَّىmay He send prayersاللَّهُAllahعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَلَّمَ،and grant him peace,
that the Prophet of Allah, may Allah's prayers and peace be upon him,
قَالَ:said:
said:
مَنْWhoeverجَاءَتْهُcomes to himمَوْعِظَةٌan admonitionمِنْfromرَبِّهِhis Lordفَقَبِلَهَاand he accepts itشَكَرَhas thankedاللَّهُAllahلَهُfor himذَلِكَ،that,
Whoever receives an admonition from his Lord and accepts it, Allah will thank him for that,
وَمَنْand whoeverجَاءَتْهُit comes to himفَلَمْand he does notيَقْبَلْهَاaccept itكَانَتْit will beحُجَّةًan argumentعَلَيْهِagainst himيَوْمَon the Dayالْقِيَامَةِ،of Resurrection,
and whoever receives it and does not accept it, it will be an argument against him on the Day of Resurrection.
مَهْلًاSlow downفَإِنَّfor indeedمِثْلَكَthe likes of youلَاdoes notيَنْبَغِيbefitلَهُhimأَنْthatيَنَامَ.he should sleep.
Slow down, for indeed it does not befit the likes of you to sleep.
إِنَّمَاIndeedجُعِلَتِwere madeالْأَنْبِيَاءُthe Prophetsرُعَاةًshepherdsلِعِلْمِهِمْdue to their knowledgeبِالرَّعِيَّةِof the flock
The Prophets were only made shepherds due to their knowledge of the flock:
يَجْبُرُونَthey mendالْكَسِيرَthe broken oneوَيُسَمِّنُونَand they fattenالْهَزِيلَةَthe lean oneوَيَرُدَّنَand they returnوَيَرُدُّونَand they returnالضَّالَّةَthe stray one
they mend the broken, fatten the lean, and return the stray.
فَكَيفَSo how aboutمَنْhe whoيَسْفِكُshedsدِمَاءَbloodالْمُسْلِمِينَof the Muslimsوَيَأْخُذُand takesأَمْوَالَهُمْ!their wealth!
So how about the one who sheds the blood of Muslims and takes their wealth!
أُعِيذُكَI seek refuge for youبِاللَّهِin Allahأَنْthatتَقُولَyou sayإِنَّthatقَرَابَتَكَyour kinshipمِنْtoرَسُولِthe Messengerاللَّهِ،of Allah,صَلَّىmay He send prayersاللَّهُAllahعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَلَّمَ،and grant him peace,تَدْعُوكَcalls youإِلَىtoالْجَنَّةِ،Paradise.
I seek refuge for you in Allah that you should say your kinship to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah's prayers and peace be upon him, calls you to Paradise.
إِنَّIndeedرَسُولَMessengerاللَّهِ،of Allah,صَلَّىmay He send prayersاللَّهُAllahعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَلَّمَ،and grant him peace,كَانَتْwasفِيinيَدِهِhis handجَرِيدَةٌa palm branchيَسْتَاكُhe was cleaning his teethبِهَاwith it
Indeed, the Messenger of Allah, may Allah's prayers and peace be upon him, had a palm branch in his hand with which he was cleaning his teeth,
فَضَرَبَand he struckبِهَاwith itقَرْنَthe head/forelockأَعْرَابِيٍّof a Bedouinفَنَزَلَso there descendedعَلَيْهِupon himجِبْرِيلُ،Gabriel,عَلَيْهِupon himالسَّلَامُ،be peace,
and he struck the head of a Bedouin with it, whereupon Gabriel, upon him be peace, descended upon him
فَقَالَ:and said:يَاOمُحَمَّدُMuhammadإِنَّindeedاللَّهَAllahتَبَارَكَBlessedوَتَعَالَىand Exalted is Heلَمْdid notيَبْعَثْكَsend youجَبَّارًاas a tyrantمُؤيِّسًاcausing despairمُقَنِّطًاdespairingتَكْسِرُbreakingقُرُونَthe headsأُمَّتِكَ،of your nation.
and said: O Muhammad, indeed Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, did not send you as a tyrant causing despair, breaking the heads of your nation.
أَلْقِCastالْجَرِيدَةَthe palm branchعَنْfromيَدِكَ،your hand.
Cast the palm branch from your hand.
فَدَعَاSo he calledالْأَعْرَابِيَّthe Bedouinإِلَىtoالْقِصَاصِretaliationمِنْfromنَفْسِهِhimself.
So he invited the Bedouin to take retaliation from him.
فَكَيْفَSo how aboutبِمَنْthe one whoيَسْفِكُshedsدِمَاءَbloodالْمُسْلِمِينَ؟of the Muslims?
So how about the one who sheds the blood of Muslims?
إِنَّIndeedاللَّهَAllahعَزَّAlmightyوَجَلَّand Majesticأَوْحَىrevealedإِلَىtoمَنْone whoهُوَisخَيْرٌbetterمِنْكَthan you
Indeed Allah, Almighty and Majestic, revealed to one who is better than you,
إِلَىtoدَاوُودَ،David,عَلَيْهِupon himالسَّلَامُ:be peace:
to David, upon him be peace:
يَاOدَاوُودُDavidإِنَّاIndeed Weجَعَلْنَاكَhave made youخَلِيفَةًa successor/caliphفِيinالْأَرْضِthe earthفَاحْكُمْso judgeبَيْنَbetweenالنَّاسِthe peopleبِالْحَقِّ.with truth.
O David, indeed We have made you a successor in the earth, so judge between the people with truth.
وَأَوْحَىAnd He revealedإِلَيْهِ:to him:
And He revealed to him:
يَاOدَاوُودُDavidإِذَاwhenأَتَاكَcomes to youالْخَصْمَانِthe two litigantsفَلَاthen let there notيَكُونَنَّbeلِأَحَدِهِمَاfor either of themعَلَىoverصَاحِبِهِhis companionالْفَضْلُpreferenceفَأَمْحُوَكَlest I blot you outمِنْfromدِيوَانِthe registerنُبُوَّتِي.of My prophethood.
O David, when the two litigants come to you, let not one of them have preference over the other, lest I blot you out from the register of My prophethood.
اعْلَمْKnowأَنَّthatثَوْبًاa garmentمِنْofثِيَابِthe garmentsأَهْلِof the peopleالنَّارِof Hellلَوْifعُلِّقَit were hungبَيْنَbetweenالسَّمَاءِthe heavenوَالْأَرْضِand the earthلَمَاتَwould dieأَهْلُthe peopleالْأَرْضِof the earthمِنْfromنَتْنِthe stenchرِيحِهِ،of its smell,
Know that if a garment from the garments of the people of Hell were hung between the heaven and the earth, the people of the earth would die from the stench of its smell,
فَكَيفَso how aboutبِمَنْthe one whoتَقَمَّصَهُ؟puts it on?
so how about the one who wears it?
وَلَوْAnd ifأَنَّthatحَلْقَةًa linkمِنْofسَلَاسِلِthe chainsجَهَنَّمَof Hellوُضِعَتْwere placedعَلَىuponجِبَالِthe mountainsالدُّنْيَاof the worldلَذَابَتْthey would meltكَمَاasيَذُوبُmeltsالرَّصَاصُleadحَتَّىuntilتَنْتَهِيَit reachesإِلَىtoالْأَرْضِthe earthالسَّابِعَةِ،seventh,
And if a single link from the chains of Hell were placed upon the mountains of the world, they would melt as lead melts until it reaches the seventh earth,
فَكَيفَso how aboutبِمَنْthe one whoتَقَلَّدَهَا؟fastens it around his neck?
so how about the one who puts it around his neck?
قَالَ:He said:
He said:
وَدَخَلَAnd enteredعَمْرُوAmrبْنُson ofعُبَيْدٍUbaydعَلَىuponالْمَنْصُورِAl-Mansurفَقَالَ:and said:
And Amr ibn Ubayd entered upon Al-Mansur and said:
يَاOأَمِيرَCommanderالْمُؤْمِنِينَof the FaithfulإِنَّindeedاللَّهَAllahعَزَّAlmightyوَجَلَّand Majesticيَقِفُكَwill make you standوَيَسَائِلُكَand will question youعَنْaboutمِثْقَالِthe weightذَرَّةٍof an atomمِنَofالْخَيْرِgoodوَالشَّرِّ،and evil,
O Commander of the Faithful, indeed Allah, Almighty and Majestic, will make you stand and question you about the weight of an atom of good and evil,
وَإِنَّand indeedالْأُمَّةَthe nationخُصَمَاؤُكَare your adversariesيَوْمَon the Dayالْقِيَامَةِ،of Resurrection,
and the nation will be your adversaries on the Day of Resurrection.
وَإِنَّAnd indeedاللَّهَAllahجَلَّMajesticوَعَزَّand Mightyلَاdoes notيَرْضَىbe pleasedمِنْكَfrom youإِلَّاexceptمَاwhatتَرْضَاهُyou are pleased withلِنَفْسِكَ،for yourself,
And indeed Allah, Majestic and Mighty, is not pleased with you except with what you are pleased with for yourself.
أَلَاVerilyوَإِنَّكَand indeed youلَاdo notتَرْضَىbe pleasedلِنَفْسِكَfor yourselfإِلَّاexceptبِأَنْthatيُعْدَلَit is dealt justlyعَلَيْكَwith you
Verily, you are not pleased for yourself except that justice be done to you,
وَإِنَّand indeedاللَّهَAllahجَلَّMajesticوَعَزَّand Mightyلَاdoes notيَرْضَىbe pleasedمِنْكَfrom youإِلَّاexceptبِأَنْthatتَعْدِلَyou deal justlyعَلَىwithالرَّعِيَّةِ،the flock.
and Allah, Majestic and Mighty, is not pleased with you except that you deal justly with the flock.
يَاOأَمِيرَCommanderالْمُؤْمِنِينَ،of the Faithful,إِنَّindeedوَرَاءَbehindبَابِكَyour doorنِيرَانًاfiresتَتَأَجَّجُblazingمِنَfromالْجَوْرِ،tyranny.
O Commander of the Faithful, indeed behind your door are fires blazing from tyranny.
وَاللَّهِBy Allahمَاnotيُحْكَمُis it judgedوَرَاءَbehindبَابِكَyour doorبِكِتَابٍby the Bookوَلَاnorبِسُنَّةِby the Sunnahنَبِيِّهِ،of His Prophet,صَلَّىmay He send prayersاللَّهُAllahعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَلَّمَ،and grant him peace,
By Allah, it is not judged behind your door by the Book nor by the Sunnah of His Prophet, may Allah's prayers and peace be upon him.
قَالَ:He said:فَبَكَىSo weptالْمَنْصُورُ.Al-Mansur.
He said: So Al-Mansur wept.
فَقَالَThen saidسُلَيْمَانُSulaymanبْنُson ofمُجَالِدٍMujalidوَهُوَwhile heوَاقِفٌwas standingعَلَىatرَأْسِthe headالْمَنْصُورِ:of Al-Mansur:
Then Sulayman ibn Mujalid, while standing at the head of Al-Mansur, said:
يَاOعَمْرُوAmrقَدْyou haveشَقَقْتَharshly burdenedعَلَىuponأَمِيرِthe Commanderالْمُؤْمِنِينَ!of the Faithful!
O Amr, you have been harsh upon the Commander of the Faithful!
فَقَالَSo saidعَمْرٌو:Amr:يَاOأَمِيرَCommanderالْمُؤْمِنِينَof the Faithfulمَنْwhoهَذَا؟is this?
So Amr said: O Commander of the Faithful, who is this?
قَالَ:He said:أَخُوكَYour brotherسُلَيْمَانُSulaymanبْنُson ofمُجَالِدٍ.Mujalid.
He said: Your brother Sulayman ibn Mujalid.
قَالَSaidعَمْرٌو:Amr:وَيْلَكَWoe to youيَاOسُلَيْمَانُ!Sulayman!
Amr said: Woe to you, O Sulayman!
إِنَّIndeedأَمِيرَthe Commanderالْمُؤْمِنِينَof the Faithfulيَمُوتُwill dieوَإِنَّand indeedكُلَّeveryمَاwhatتَرَاهُyou see itيَنْفَدُwill perishوَإِنَّكَand indeed youجِيفَةٌa corpseغَدًاtomorrowبِالْفَنَاءِin the courtyardلَاwill notيَنْفَعُكَbenefit youإِلَّاexceptعَمَلٌa deedصَالِحٌrighteousقَدَّمْتَهُ،you sent forth,
Indeed the Commander of the Faithful will die, and indeed everything you see will perish, and indeed you will be a corpse tomorrow in the courtyard, and nothing will benefit you except a righteous deed you sent forth.
وَلَقُرْبُAnd the closeness ofهَذَاthisالْجِدَارِwallأَنْفَعُis more beneficialلِأَمِيرِto the Commanderالْمُؤْمِنِينَof the Faithfulمِنْthanقُرْبِكَyour closenessإِذْsinceكُنْتَyou wereتَطْوِيwithholdingعَنْهُfrom himالنَّصِيحَةَsincere adviceوَتَنْهَىand forbiddingمَنْwhosoeverيَنْصَحُهُ،advises him.
And the closeness of this wall is more beneficial to the Commander of the Faithful than your closeness, since you were withholding sincere advice from him and forbidding whoever advised him.
يَاOأَمِيرَCommanderالْمُؤْمِنِينَof the Faithfulإِنَّindeedهَؤُلَاءِthese peopleاتَّخَذُوكَhave taken youسُلَّمًاas a ladderإِلَىtoشَهَوَاتِهِمْ.their desires.
O Commander of the Faithful, indeed these people have taken you as a ladder to their desires.
قَالَSaidالْمَنْصُورُ:Al-Mansur:فَأَصْنَعُThen what shall I doمَاذَا؟what?
Al-Mansur said: Then what shall I do?
ادْعُCallلِيfor meأَصْحَابَكَyour companionsأَوَّلَهُمْ!the first of them!
Call for me your companions, the first of them!
قَالَ:He said:ادْعُهُمْCall themأَنْتَyouبِعَمَلٍwith a deedصَالِحٍrighteousتُحْدِثُهُthat you initiateوَمُرْand commandبِهَذَاthisالْخَنَّاقِexecutioner/stranglerفَلْيَرْفَعْthat he removeعَنْfromأَعْنَاقِthe necksالنَّاسِof the people
He said: Call them yourself with a righteous deed that you initiate, and command this executioner to remove [his hands/punishment] from the necks of the people,
وَاسْتَعْمِلْand employفِيinالْيَوْمِthe dayالْوَاحِدِsingleعُمَّالًاworkersكُلَّمَاwheneverرَابَكَyou suspectedمِنْهُمْfrom themرِيبَةٌsuspicionأَوْorأَنْكَرْتَyou disapprovedعَلَىofرَجُلٍa manعَزَلْتَهُyou dismissed himوَوَلَّيْتَand appointedغَيْرَهُ،someone else,
and employ agents for a single day; whenever you suspect something from them or disapprove of a man, you dismiss him and appoint someone else,
فَوَاللَّهِfor by Allahلَئِنْifلَمْyou do notتَقْبَلْacceptمِنْهُمْfrom themإِلَّاexceptالْعَدْلَjusticeلَيَتَقَرَّبَنَّthey will surely seek nearnessبِهِwith itإِلَيْكَto youمَنْhe whoلَاdoes notنِيَّةَintentionلَهُhaveفِيهِ.in it.
for by Allah, if you do not accept from them except justice, even the one who has no intention for it will seek to draw near to you through it.
وَحَدَّثَAnd narratedمُحَمَّدُMuhammadبْنُson ofعَبْدِAbdاللَّهِAllahقَالَ:who said:
And Muhammad ibn Abdullah narrated, saying:
قَالَSaidالْمَنْصُورُAl-Mansurلِجَعْفَرِto Ja'farبْنِson ofحَنْظَلَةَHanzhalahالْبَهْرَانِيِّ:Al-Bahrani:عِظْنِي.Admonish me.
Al-Mansur said to Ja'far ibn Hanzhalah Al-Bahrani: Admonish me.
قَالَHe saidفَقُلْتُ:so I said:يَاOأَمِيرَCommanderالْمُؤْمِنِينَof the FaithfulأَدْرَكْتُI perceivedعُمَرَUmarبْنَson ofعَبْدِAbdالْعَزِيزِAl-Azizسَنَتَيْنِfor two years
He said: So I said: O Commander of the Faithful, I lived during the time of Umar ibn Abdul Aziz for two years;
لَمْhe did notيَتَّخِذْacquireمَالًاwealthوَلَمْand he did notيُنْشِئْestablishعَيْنًاa springوَلَمْand he did notيَسْتَخْرِجْexcavateأَرْضًاlandوَلَمْand he did notيَضَعْlayلَبِنَةًa brickعَلَىuponلَبِنَةٍa brick
he did not acquire wealth, nor establish a spring, nor excavate land, nor lay a brick upon a brick,
وَلَاand I cannotأُحْصِيcountكَمْhow manyمِنْofوَلَدِهِhis childrenتَحَمَّلَboreالْحَمَالَاتِfinancial debts/burdensوَحُمِلَand were mountedعَلَىuponالْخَيْلِ،horses,
and I cannot count how many of his children bore financial burdens and were mounted on horses [to fight in Jihad for lack of means].
وَوَلِيَAnd ruledهِشَامُHishamبْنُson ofعَبْدِAbdالْمَلِكِAl-Malikثَمَانِيَeightعَشْرَةَten [eighteen]سَنَةًyears
And Hisham ibn Abdul Malik ruled for eighteen years;
مَاthere was notمِنْهَاfrom itسَنَةٌa yearإِلَّاexceptوَهُوَthat heيُنْشِئُwas establishingفِيهَاin itعُيُونًاspringsوَيَتَّخِذُand acquiringفِيهَاin itأَمْوَالًاwealthوَيَقْطَعُand grantingلِوَلَدِهِto his childrenالْقَطَائِعَ،estates,
there was no year out of them except that he was establishing springs in it, acquiring wealth, and granting estates to his children,
وَلَاand I do notأَعْرِفُknowالْيَوْمَtodayمِنْamongوَلَدِهِhis childrenرَجُلًاa manيَشْبَعُ.who eats his fill.
and today I do not know a single man among his children who eats his fill.
فَقَالَ:He said:وَاللَّهِBy Allahلَقَدْyou have indeedوَعَظْتَadmonishedوَأَحْسَنْتَ.and done well.
He said: By Allah, you have indeed admonished and done well.
قَالَSaidجَعْفَرٌ:Ja'far:فَفَرِحْتُSo I rejoicedأَنْthatنَجَعَتْtook effectعِظَتِيmy admonitionفِيinأَمِيرِthe Commanderالْمُؤْمِنِينَ.of the Faithful.
Ja'far said: So I rejoiced that my admonition took effect in the Commander of the Faithful.
قَالَ:He said:فَأَطْرَقَThen he lowered his headسَاعَةًfor a whileثُمَّthenقَالَ:he said:
He said: Then he lowered his head in silence for a while, then said:
يَاOغُلَامُboy/servantادْعُcallلِيfor meسُلَيْمَانَSulaymanبْنَson ofمُجَالِدٍ.Mujalid.
O boy, call for me Sulayman ibn Mujalid.
فَدَعَاهُSo he called himفَقَالَ:and he said:
So he called him and said:
يَاOسُلَيْمَانُSulaymanعَلِّقْhangأَصْحَابَthe companions ofقِيليَاQuilyaبِأَرْجُلِهِمْby their legsحَتَّىuntilيُؤَدُّواthey payمَاwhatعَلَيْهِمْ.is upon them.
O Sulayman, hang the companions of Quilya by their legs until they pay what is upon them.
وَكَانَAnd he hadقَدْalreadyجَعَلَهَاassigned itلِصَالِحٍto Salihابْنِهِ،his son,
And he had already assigned that [revenue] to his son Salih,
فَعَلِمْتُso I knewأَنَّthatعِظَتِيmy admonitionلَمْdid notتَنْفَعْbenefitقَلِيلًاa littleوَلَاnorكَثِيرًا.much.
so I knew that my admonition did not benefit a little nor much.
