ثُمَّThenرُفِعَwas raisedلَنَاfor usالْبَيْتُthe HouseالْمَعْمُورُFrequented

Then the Frequented House was raised for us

فَقُلْتُand I saidيَاOجِبْرِيلُGabrielمَاwhatهَذَا؟is this?

and I said: O Gabriel, what is this?

قَالَHe saidالْبَيْتُthe FrequentedالْمَعْمُورُHouseيَدْخُلُهُenters itكُلَّeveryيَوْمٍdayسَبْعُونَseventyأَلْفَthousandمَلَكٍangels

He said: The Frequented House, seventy thousand angels enter it every day

إِذَاwhenخَرَجُواthey leaveمِنْهُitلَاdo notيَعُودُونَreturnفِيهِto it

when they leave it they do not return to it.

ثُمَّThenرُفِعَتْwas raisedلَنَاfor usسِدْرَةُthe Lote Treeالْمُنْتَهَىof the Utmost Boundary

Then the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary was raised for us

فَإِذَاand beholdأَرْبَعَةُfourأَنْهَارٍriversيَخْرُجْنَissueمِنْfromأَسْفَلِهَاits base

and behold, four rivers issue from its base

فَقُلْتُand I saidيَاOجِبْرِيلُGabrielمَاwhatهَذِهِare theseالْأَنْهَارُ؟rivers?

and I said: O Gabriel, what are these rivers?

قَالَHe saidأَمَّاAs forالنَّهْرَانِthe two riversالظَّاهِرَانِapparentفَالْنِّيلُthey are the Nileوَالْفُرَاتُand the Euphrates

He said: As for the two apparent rivers, they are the Nile and the Euphrates

وَأَمَّاand as forالْبَاطِنَانِthe two hidden onesفَنَهْرَانِthey are two riversفِيinالْجَنَّةِParadise

and as for the two hidden ones, they are two rivers in Paradise.

ثُمَّThenأُتِيتُI was broughtبِإِنَاءَيْنِtwo vesselsمِنْofخَمْرٍwineوَلَبَنٍand milk

Then I was brought two vessels of wine and milk

فَاخْتَرْتُand I choseاللَّبَنَthe milk

and I chose the milk.

فَقِيلَIt was saidلِيto meأَصَبْتَYou have hit the right markأَصَابَmay God guideاللَّهُGodبِكَthrough youأُمَّتَكَyour nationعَلَىuponالْفِطْرَةِthe innate disposition

It was said to me: You have hit the right mark; may God guide your nation through you upon the innate disposition.

وَفُرِضَتْAnd were made obligatoryعَلَيَّupon meخَمْسُونَfiftyصَلَاةٍprayers

And fifty prayers were made obligatory upon me

فَأَقْبَلْتُso I returnedبِهَاwith themحَتَّىuntilأَتَيْتُI cameعَلَىuponمُوسَىMosesعَلَيْهِupon himالسَّلَامُpeace

so I returned with them until I came upon Moses, peace be upon him

فَقَالَand he saidبِمَwith whatأُمِرْتَ؟were you commanded?

and he said: With what were you commanded?

قُلْتُI saidبِخَمْسِينَwith fiftyصَلَاةٍprayersكُلَّeveryيَوْمٍday

I said: With fifty prayers every day.

قَالَHe saidأُمَّتُكَyour nationلَاwill notيُطِيقُونَbe able to bearذَلِكَthat

He said: Your nation will not be able to bear that

فَإِنِّيfor indeed Iقَدْhaveبَلَوْتُtestedالنَّاسَpeopleقَبْلَكَbefore you

for indeed I have tested people before you

وَعَالَجْتُand I dealt withبَنِيthe Childrenإِسْرَائِيلَof Israelأَشَدَّwith the strictestالْمُعَالَجَةِtreatment

and I dealt with the Children of Israel with the strictest treatment

فَارْجِعْso returnإِلَىtoرَبِّكَyour LordجَلَّMajesticوَعَزَّand Exalted is He

so return to your Lord, Majestic and Exalted is He

فَسَأَلْهُand ask Himالتَّخْفِيفَfor reduction

and ask Him for a reduction.

قَالَHe saidفَرَجَعْتُSo I returnedإِلَىtoرَبِّيmy Lord

He said: So I returned to my Lord

فَحَطَّand He removedعَنِّيfrom meخَمْساًfive

and He removed from me five

فَأَتَيْتُso I cameعَلَىuponمُوسَىMosesعَلَيْهِupon himالسَّلَامُpeace

so I came upon Moses, peace be upon him

فَقَالَand he saidبِمَwith whatأُمِرْتَ؟were you commanded?

and he said: With what were you commanded?

فَأَنْبَأْتُهُSo I informed himبِمَاof whatحَطَّwas removedعَنِّيfrom me

So I informed him of what was removed from me

فَقَالَand he saidمِثْلَlikeمَقَالَتِهِhis statementالْأُولَىfirst

and he said the like of his first statement.

فَمَاSo I continuedزِلْتُnot ceasingبَيْنَbetweenيَدَيْthe hands ofرَبِّيmy LordجَلَّMajesticوَعَزَّand Exalted is He

So I continued to go back and forth before my Lord, Majestic and Exalted is He

أَسْتَحُطُّasking for reductionحَتَّىuntilرَجَعْتُI returnedإِلَىtoخَمْسِfiveصَلَوَاتٍprayers

asking for reduction until I returned to five prayers.

فَأَتَيْتُSo I cameعَلَىuponمُوسَىMosesعَلَيْهِupon himالسَّلَامُpeace

So I came upon Moses, peace be upon him

فَقَالَand he saidبِمَwith whatأُمِرْتَ؟were you commanded?

and he said: With what were you commanded?

فَقُلْتُI saidبِخَمْسِwith fiveصَلَوَاتٍprayersكُلَّeveryيَوْمٍday

I said: With five prayers every day.

فَقَالَHe saidأُمَّتُكَyour nationلَاwill notيُطِيقُونَbe able to bearذَلِكَthat

He said: Your nation will not be able to bear that

فَارْجِعْso returnإِلَىtoرَبِّكَyour LordجَلَّMajesticذِكْرُهُis His remembranceوَاسْأَلْهُand ask Himالتَّخْفِيفَfor reduction

so return to your Lord, Majestic is His remembrance, and ask Him for reduction.

فَقُلْتُI saidلَقَدْIndeedرَجَعْتُI have returnedإِلَىtoرَبِّيmy LordتَبَارَكَBlessedوَتَعَالَىand Exalted

I said: Indeed I have returned to my Lord, Blessed and Exalted

حَتَّىuntilاسْتَحْيَيْتُI felt shy

until I felt shy

لَاnoوَلَكِنِّيrather Iأَرْضَىam satisfiedوَأُسْلِمُand submit

no, rather I am satisfied and submit.

فَلَمَّاSo whenجَاوَزْتُI passed on

So when I passed on

نُودِيتُit was proclaimed to meأَنِّيthat indeed IقَدْhaveخَفَّفْتُeasedعَنْfromعِبَادِيMy servants

it was proclaimed to me: Indeed I have eased things for My servants

وَأَمْضَيْتُand I have enforcedفَرِيضَتِيMy obligation

and I have enforced My obligation

وَجَعَلْتُand I have madeبِكُلِّfor everyحَسَنَةٍgood deedعَشْرًاtenأَمْثَالَهَاtimes its like.

and I have made for every good deed ten times its like.

وَانْظُرْAnd lookإِلَىatرَوْنَقِthe elegance ofأَلْفَاظِهِhis expressionsعَلَيْهِupon himالسَّلَامُpeace

And look at the elegance of his expressions, peace be upon him

وَصِحَّةِand the soundness ofمَعَانِيهِhis meaningsوَمَوْضِعِand the place ofذَلِكَthatمِنَinالْقُلُوبِthe hearts

and the soundness of his meanings and the place of that in the hearts

مَعَalong withقِلَّةِscarcity ofتَعْمِيقِهِhis profundityوَبُعْدِهِand his remotenessمِنَfromالتَّكَلُّفِaffectation

along with the scarcity of affectation and his remoteness from artificiality

كَقَوْلِهِlike his sayingصَلَّىmay God bestow peaceاللَّهُGodعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَلَّمَ:and blessings:

such as his saying, may God bestow peace and blessings upon him:

زُوِيَتْGathered upلِيfor meالْأَرْضُis the earthحَيَاءًso I was shown

"The earth was gathered up for me

فَأُرِيتُand I was shownمَشَارِقَهَاits eastern partsوَمَغَارِبَهَاand its western parts

and I was shown its eastern and western parts

وَسَيَبْلُغُand the dominion ofمُلْكُmy nationأُمَّتِيwill reachمَاwhatزُوِيَwas gatheredلِيfor meمِنْهَاthereof."

and the dominion of my nation will reach what was gathered for me thereof."

قَوْلُهُHis sayingزُوِيَتْ"zuwiyat"جُمِعَتْmeans gathered.

His saying "zuwiyat" means gathered.

وَمِثْلُهُ:And like it:إِنَّIndeedالْمَسْجِدَthe mosqueلَيَنْزَوِيshrinksمِنَfromالنُّخَامَةِphlegm

And like it: "Indeed, the mosque shrinks from phlegm

كَمَاjust asتَنْزَوِيshrinksالْجِلْدَةُthe hideفِيinالنَّارِthe fire"

just as the hide shrinks in the fire."

وَلَاAnd thereيَكُونُisالْانِزِوَاءُno shrinkingإِلَّاexceptبِانْحِرَافٍwith deviationمَعَalong withتَقَبُّضٍcontraction.

And shrinking only occurs with deviation along with contraction.

وَقَالَ:And he said:إِنَّIndeedمِنْبَرِيmy pulpitهَذَاthisعَلَىis uponتُرْعَةٍa terraceمِنْfromتُرَعِterraces ofالْجَنَّةِParadise

And he said: "Indeed, this pulpit of mine is upon a terrace from the terraces of Paradise"

وَهِيَand it isالرَّوْضَةُthe gardenتَكُونُwhich isفِيinالْمَكَانِthe placeالْمُرْتَفِعِelevated.

and it is the garden located in the elevated place.

وَقَالَ:And he said:إِنَّIndeedقُرَيْشًاQurayshقَالَتْsaidإِنِّيthat I amصُنْبُورٌa sunbur

And he said: "Indeed, Quraysh said that I am a sunbur"

وَهِيَand it isالنَّخْلَةُthe palm treeتَبْقَىthat remainsمُنْفَرِدَةًisolatedوَيَدِقُّand whose trunk becomes thinأَصْلُهَاat its base

and it is the palm tree that remains isolated and whose trunk becomes thin at its base.

تَقُولُmeaningإِنَّهُhe isفَرْدٌan individualلَيْسَwho hasلَهُto himوَلَدٌno child

Meaning: He is an individual who has no child

فَإِذَاso whenمَاتَhe diesانْقَطَعَis cut offذِكْرُهُhis mention.

so when he dies, his mention is cut off.

وَقَالَAnd he saidفِيregardingأَبِيAbuبَكْرٍBakrرَضِيَmay God be pleasedاللَّهُGodعَنْهُ:with him:

And he said regarding Abu Bakr, may God be pleased with him:

مَاThere isأَحَدٌnoneمِنَofالنَّاسِthe peopleعَرَضْتُto whom I presentedعَلَيْهِمُthemالْإِسْلَامَIslam

"There is none of the people to whom I presented Islam

إِلَّاexceptكَانَتْthere wasلَهُfor himكَبْوَةٌhesitationغَيْرَother thanأَبِيAbuبَكْرٍBakr

except there was hesitation for him, other than Abu Bakr

فَإِنَّهُfor indeed heلَمْdid notيَتَلَعْثَمْ،stammer"

for indeed he did not stammer."

أَيْMeaningلَمْhe did notيَنْتَظِرْwaitوَلَمْand did notيَمْكُثْ،tarry

Meaning: he did not wait and did not tarry,

وَالْكَبْوَةُand the "kabwah"مِثْلُis likeالْوَقْعَةِthe stumble.

and the stumble is like the fall.

وَقَالَAnd he saidفِيregardingعُمَرَUmarرَحِمَهُmay God have mercyاللَّهُ:on him:

And he said regarding Umar, may God have mercy on him:

لَمْI have notأَرَseenعَبْقَرِيًّاan abqariيَفْرِيperformingفَرْيَهُ،his feat

"I have not seen an abqari performing his feat,"

وَالْعَبْقَرِيُّand the abqariالسَّيِّدُ،is the master

and the abqari is the master;

يُقَالُ:it is saidهَذَاthis isعَبْقَرِيُّthe abqari ofقَوْمِهِhis peopleأَيْmeaningسَيِّدُهُمْ،their master

it is said: This is the abqari of his people, meaning their master,

وَيَفْرِيand he performsفَرْيَهُhis featأَيْmeaningيَعْمَلُhe doesعَمَلَهُhis work.

and he performs his feat, meaning he does his work unmatchably.

وَقَالَAnd he saidفِيregardingعَلِيٍّAliبْنِson ofأَبِيAbuطَالِبٍTalibرِضْوَانُmay the pleasure ofاللَّهِGodعَلَيْهِ:be upon him:

And he said regarding Ali bin Abu Talib, may the pleasure of God be upon him:

إِنَّIndeedلَكَfor you isبَيْتًاa houseفِيinالْجَنَّةِParadiseوَإِنَّكَand indeed you areذُوthe possessor ofقَرْنَيْهَا،its two horns

"Indeed, for you is a house in Paradise, and indeed you are the possessor of its two horns,"

يُرِيدُmeaningأَنَّهُthat he isذُوthe possessor ofطَرَفَيْهَاits two sides.

meaning that he is the possessor of its two sides.

وَقَالَAnd he saidفِيregardingالْحُسَيْنِAl-Husseinبْنِson ofعَلِيٍّAliرَحِمَهُمَاmay God have mercy on them bothاللَّهُGod

And he said regarding Al-Hussein son of Ali, may God have mercy on them both

حِينَwhenبَالَhe urinatedعَلَيْهِon himوَهُوَwhile he wasطِفْلٌan infantفَأُخِذَand he was takenمِنْfromحِجْرِهِ:his lap:

when he urinated on him while he was an infant and was taken from his lap:

لَا"Do notتُزْرِمُواinterruptابْنِي،my son,"

"Do not interrupt my son,"

الْأِزْرَامُal-izramالْقَطْعُ،is cutting off

al-izram means cutting off;

يُقَالُit is saidلِلرَّجُلِof a manيَقْطَعُwho stopsبَوْلَهُhis urineأَزْرَمَhe interrupted.

it is said of a man who stops his urine, "azrama" (he interrupted it).

وَقَالَAnd he saidفِيregardingالْأَنْصَارِ:the Ansar:

And he said regarding the Ansar:

إِنَّهُمْ"Indeed theyكَرْشِيare my inner circleوَعَيْبَتِيand my confidants

"Indeed they are my inner circle and my confidants

وَلَوْلَاand were it not forالْهِجْرَةُthe migrationلَكُنْتُI would have beenامْرَأًa manمِنْهُمْ،from them,"

and were it not for the migration, I would have been a man from them,"

أَيْmeaningمِنَfromالْأَنْصَارِ،the Ansar.

meaning from the Ansar.

الْكِرْشُAl-kirshالْجَمَاعَةُ،is the group

Al-kirsh is the group,

وَالْعَيْبَةُand al-aybahأَيْmeaningهُمْthey areمَوْضِعُthe place ofسِرِّيmy secret

and al-aybah, meaning they are the place of my secret

وَمِنْهُand from itأُخِذَتِis derivedالْعَيْبَةُal-aybah (the chest/bag).

and from it the term al-aybah is taken.

وَقَالَAnd he saidصَلَّىmay God bestow peaceاللَّهُGodعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَلَّمَ:and blessings:

And he said, may God bestow peace and blessings upon him:

لَعَنَ"God has cursedاللَّهُGodالنَّامِصَةَthe plucker of facial hairوَالْمُتَنَمِّصَةَand the one who has it done

"God has cursed the plucker of facial hair and the one who has it done

وَالْوَاشِرَةَand the sharpener of teethوَالْمُوتَشِرَةَand the one who has it done

and the sharpener of teeth and the one who has it done

وَالْوَاصِلَةَand the hair-extenderوَالْمُوتَصِلَةَand the one who has it done

and the hair-extender and the one who has it done

وَالْوَاشِمَةَand the tattooerوَالْمُوتَشِمَةَ،and the one who has it done."

and the tattooer and the one who has it done."

فَالْنَّامِصَةُThe an-namisah isالَّتِيshe whoتَنْتِفُplucksالشَّعْرَhairمِنَfromالْوَجْهِ،the face

The an-namisah is she who plucks hair from the face,

وَمِنْهُand from itقِيلَis calledلِلْمِنْقَاشِthe tweezersالْمِنْمَاصُ،al-minmas

and from it tweezers are called al-minmas,

وَالْمُتَنَمِّصَةُand al-mutanammisah isالَّتِيsheتَفْعَلُwho hasبِهَاdone to herذَلِكَ،that

and al-mutanammisah is she who has that done to her,

وَالْوَاشِرَةُand al-washirah isالَّتِيshe whoتَشُرُّsharpensأَسْنَانَهَاher teeth

and al-washirah is she who sharpens her teeth

وَذَلِكَand that isأَنَّهَاthat sheتَفْلُجُهَاmakes gaps in themوَتُحَدِّدُهَاand makes them pointy

and that is that she makes gaps in them and makes them pointy

حَتَّىuntilيَكُونَthere isلَهَاfor herأَشَرٌ،ashar (sharpness)

until there is ashar for her,

وَالْأَشَرُand al-ashar isتَحَدُّدٌsharpnessوَرِقَّةٌand thinnessفِيinأَطْرَافِthe tips ofالْأَسْنَانِ،the teeth

and al-ashar is sharpness and thinness in the tips of the teeth,

وَالْوَاصِلَةُand al-wasilahوَالْمُوتَصِلَةُand al-mutasilahالَّتِيis she whoتَصِلُconnectsشَعْرَهَاher hairبِشَعْرِwith the hair ofغَيْرِهَا،someone else

and al-wasilah and al-mutasilah is she who connects her hair with the hair of someone else,

وَالْوَاشِمَةُand al-washimah isالْمَرْأَةُthe woman whoتَغْرِزُpricksظَهْرَthe back ofكَفِّهَاher handوَمِعْصَمَهَاand her wrist

and al-washimah is the woman who pricks the back of her hand and her wrist

بِإِبْرَةٍwith a needleحَتَّىuntilتُؤَثِّرَit leaves a markفِيهِin itوَتَحْشُوَهُand packs itبِالْكُحْلِwith kohl.

with a needle until it leaves a mark in it and packs it with kohl.

وَذَكَرَAnd he mentionedأَيَّامَthe days ofالتَّشْرِيقِTashreeqفَقَالَ:and said:

And he mentioned the days of Tashreeq and said:

هِيَ"They areأَيَّامُdays ofأَكْلٍeatingوَشُرْبٍand drinkingوَبِعَالٍ،and intercourse,"

"They are days of eating, drinking, and intercourse,"

يَعْنِيmeaningالنِّكَاحَmarriage/intercourse.

meaning intercourse.

وَقَالَ:And he said:يُحْشَرُ"People will be gatheredالنَّاسُonيَوْمَthe Day ofالْقِيَامَةِResurrectionحُفَاةًbarefootبُهُمًا،uncircumcised/plain-colored,"

And he said: "People will be gathered on the Day of Resurrection barefoot and buhman,"

وَهُوَand al-baheem isالْبَهِيمُthe oneالَّذِيwhoلَاdoes notيَخْلِطُmixلَوْنُهُhis colorلَوْنَwith the color ofسِوَاهُanyone else

and al-baheem is the one whose color does not mix with the color of anyone else,

مِنْwhetherسَوَادٍblackكَانَit wasأَوْorغَيْرِهِ،other than that.

whether it was black or other than that.

يَقُولُ:He means:لَيْسَThere is notفِيهِمْamong themشَيْءٌanythingمِنَofالْأَمْرَاضِthe diseasesوَالْعَاهَاتِand the afflictions

He means: There is nothing among them of the diseases and afflictions

الَّتِيthatتَكُونُexistفِيinالدُّنْيَاthe world.

that exist in the world.

وَقَالَAnd he saidفِيregardingصُلْحِthe treaty ofالْحُدَيْبِيَةِ:Al-Hudaybiyyah:

And he said regarding the treaty of Al-Hudaybiyyah:

لَا"Noإِغْلَالَtreacheryوَلَاand noإِسْلَالَ،theft,"

"No treachery and no theft,"

الْإِسْلَالُal-islalالسَّرِقَةُ،is theftوَالْإِغْلَالُand al-ighlalالْخِيَانَةُis betrayal.

al-islal is theft, and al-ighlal is betrayal.

وَقَالَ:And he said:اللَّهُمَّ"O Allah,إِنِّيindeed Iأَعُوذُseek refugeبِكَin Youمِنْfromوَعْثَاءِthe hardship ofالسَّفَرِtravel

And he said: "O Allah, indeed I seek refuge in You from the hardship of travel

وَكَآبَةِand the distress ofالْمُنْقَلَبِreturnوَالْحَوْرِand decreaseبَعْدَafterالْكَوْرِ،increase,"

and the distress of return, and decrease after increase,"

الْحَوْبُAl-hawbإِذَاwhenكَانَit isبِالْبَاءِwith a 'b'وَالْكَوْنُand al-kawnإِذَاwhenكَانَit isبِالنُّونِwith an 'n'

al-hawb when it is with a 'b' and al-kawn when it is with an 'n',

تَقُولُyou sayيَكُونُhe isفِيinحَالَةٍa stateجَمِيلَةٍbeautifulفَيَرْجِعُthen he returnsعَنْهَا،from it

you say he is in a beautiful state then he returns from it,

وَإِذَاand ifكَانَاthey areجَمِيعًاbothبِالرَّاءِwith an 'r'فَهُوَthen it isالنُّقْصَانُthe decreaseبَعْدَafterالزِّيَادَةِthe increase.

and if they are both with an 'r', then it is the decrease after the increase.

وَقَالَAnd he saidعَلَيْهِupon himالسَّلَامُ:peace:

And he said, peace be upon him:

خَمِّرُوا"Coverآنِيَتَكُمْyour vesselsوَأَوْكُواand tieأَسْقِيَتَكُمْyour waterskins

"Cover your vessels, tie your waterskins

وَأَجِيفُواand closeالْأَبْوَابَthe doorsوَأَطْفِئُواand extinguishالْمَصَابِيحَthe lamps

close the doors, extinguish the lamps

وَاكْفُتُواand keep indoorsصِبْيَانَكُمْyour childrenفَإِنَّfor indeedلِلشَّيْطَانِfor the Satanانْتِشَارًاthere is a spreadingوَخَطْفَةً،and a snatching

and keep indoors your children, for indeed the Satan has a spreading and a snatching

يَعْنِيmeaningبِاللَّيْلِ،at night.

meaning at night.

التَّخْمِيرُAt-takhmirالتَّغْطِيَةُ،is coveringوَالْإِيكَاءُand al-ikawالشَّدُّ،is tying

At-takhmir is covering, and al-ikaw is tying,

وَاسْمُand the name ofالْخَيْطِthe threadالَّذِيwith whichيُشَدُّis tiedبِهِitالسِّقَاءُthe waterskinالْوِكَاءُ،is al-wika'

and the name of the thread with which the waterskin is tied is al-wika',

وَاكْفُتُواand wa-kuftuيَعْنِيmeansضُمُّوهُمْgather themإِلَيْكُمْ.to yourselves.

and wa-kuftu means gather them to yourselves.
