وَذَكَرُواAnd they mentionedأَنَّthatرَافِعَRafi'بْنَson ofعُمَيْرَةَ'Umayrahبْنِson ofجَابِرٍJabir
And they mentioned that Rafi' ibn 'Umayrah ibn Jabir
كَانَwasيَرْعَىpasturingغَنَمًاsheepإِذْwhenغَارَraidedالذِّئْبُthe wolfعَلَيْهَاupon them
was pasturing sheep when a wolf raided them
فَاحْتَمَلَand carried awayأَعْظَمَthe greatestشَاةٍsheepمِنْهَاfrom them
and carried away the greatest sheep among them.
فَشَدَّSo rushedعَلَيْهِtoward himرَافِعٌRafi'لِيَأْخُذَهَاto take itمِنْهُfrom himوَقَالَ:and said:
So Rafi' rushed toward him to take it back from him and said:
عَجَبًاHow strangeلِلذِّئْبِis the wolfيَحْتَمِلُcarryingمَاwhatحَمَلَ!he carried!
"How strange is the wolf, carrying what he has carried!"
قَالَ:He said:فَأَقْعَىThen sat on its haunchesالذِّئْبُthe wolfغَيْرَnotبَعِيدٍfarوَقَالَ:and said:
He said: Then the wolf sat on its haunches not far away and said:
أَعْجَبُMore strangeمِنْهُthan itأَنْتَare you,أَخَذْتَyou tookمِنِّيfrom meرِزْقًاprovisionرَزَقَنِيهِprovided to meاللَّهُAllahتَعَالَى.the Exalted.
"More strange than that are you: you took from me a provision that Allah the Exalted provided for me."
فَقَالَThen saidرَافِعٌ:Rafi':يَاOhعَجَبًاwonderلِلذِّئْبِat the wolfيَتَكَلَّمُ!speaking!
Then Rafi' said: "How wondrous, a wolf speaking!"
فَقَالَThen saidالذِّئْبُ:the wolf:أَعْجَبُMore strangeمِنْthanذَلِكَthatالْخَارِجُis the one coming forthمِنْfromتِهَامَةَTihamah
Then the wolf said: "More strange than that is the man coming forth from Tihamah
يَدْعُوكُمْcalling youإِلَىtoالْجَنَّةِParadiseوَتَأْبَوْنَwhile you refuseإِلَّاexceptدُخُولَenteringالنَّارِ.the Fire.
who calls you to Paradise while you refuse except to enter the Fire."
فَأَقْبَلَSo cameالرَّجُلُthe manإِلَىtoالنَّبِيِّ،the Prophet,صَلَّىmay Allah invoke peaceاللَّهُand blessingsعَلَيْهِ،upon him,وَسَلَّمَ،and grant him peace,
So the man came to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace,
وَقَدْand indeedجَاءَهُcame to himجِبْرِيلُ،Gabriel,عَلَيْهِupon himالسَّلَامُ،be peace,فَأَنْبَأَهُand informed himبِمَاof whatكَانَ،had occurred,
while Gabriel, peace be upon him, had already come to him and informed him of what had happened.
فَقَصَّSo relatedالنَّبِيُّ،the Prophet,صَلَّىmay Allah invoke peaceاللَّهُand blessingsعَلَيْهِ،upon him,وَسَلَّمَ،and grant him peace,مَاwhatكَانَhad happened
So the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, recounted what had occurred,
فَآمَنَand he believedوَصَدَّقَand affirmedوَقَالَ:and said:
and he believed and affirmed and said:
رَعَيْتُI pasturedالضَّأْنَthe sheepأَحْمِيهَاprotecting themبِنَفْسِيwith myself
I pastured the sheep, protecting them myself
مِنَfromاللِّصِّthe thiefالْخَفِيِّhiddenوَكُلِّand everyذِيبِwolf
from the stealthy thief and every wolf,
فَلَمَّاThen whenأَنْthatرَأَيْتُI sawالذِّئْبَthe wolfيَعْوِيhowling
Then when I saw the wolf howling
وَبَشَّرَنِيand giving me glad tidingsبِأَحْمَدَof Ahmadمِنْfromقَرِيبِnearby
and giving me glad tidings of Ahmad from nearby,
يُبَشِّرُنِيGiving me glad tidingsبِدِينِof the religionالْحَقِّof truthحَتَّىuntil
Giving me glad tidings of the true religion until
تَبَيَّنَتِbecame clearالشَّرِيعَةُthe legislationلِلْمُنِيبِto the penitent
the sacred law became clear to the one turning in repentance.
رَجَعْتُI returnedلَهُto himوَقَدْwhileشَمَّرْتُI tucked upثَوْبِيmy garment
I returned to him with my garment tucked up
عَنِfromالْكَعْبَيْنِthe two anklesمُعْتَمِدًاrelying uponرُكُوبِيmy riding
above my ankles, relying upon my mount,
فَأَلْفَيْتُAnd I foundالنَّبِيَّthe Prophetيَقُولُsayingقَوْلًاa saying
And I found the Prophet speaking a word
صَوَابًاcorrectلَيْسَnotبِالْهَزْلِbeing jestالْكَذُوبِor falsehood
that was correct, neither jest nor falsehood.
أَلَاUnquestionablyبَلِّغْconveyبَنِيto the sons ofعَمْرِو'Amrبْنِson ofعَوْفٍ'Awf
Unquestionably, convey to the sons of 'Amr ibn 'Awf
وَأُخْتَهُمْand their sisterجَدِيلَةَJadilahأَنْthatأَجِيبِيrespond
and their sister Jadilah that you should respond
دُعَاءَto the call ofالْمُصْطَفَىthe Chosen Oneلَاthere isشَكَّdoubtفِيهِin it
to the call of the Chosen One, concerning which there is no doubt,
فَإِنَّكِFor indeed youإِنْifتُجِيبِيyou respondلَاwill notتَخِيبِيbe disappointed
For indeed, if you respond, you will not be disappointed.
وَمِنْAnd amongمَحَاسِنِthe virtues ofرَسُولِthe Messenger ofاللَّهِ،Allah,صَلَّىmay Allah invoke peaceاللَّهُand blessingsعَلَيْهِ،upon him,وَسَلَّمَ،and grant him peace,
And among the virtues of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace,
وَبَرَكَتِهِand his blessingsمَاis whatرَوَاهُnarrated itمُحَمَّدُMuhammadبْنُson ofإِسْحَاقَIshaq
and his blessings is what Muhammad ibn Ishaq narrated
عَنْfromسَعِيدِSaeedبْنِson ofمِينَاMinaعَنْfromجَابِرِJabirبْنِson ofعَبْدِ'AbdاللَّهِAllahقَالَ:who said:
from Saeed ibn Mina from Jabir ibn Abdillah who said:
عَمِلْنَاWe workedمَعَwithرَسُولِthe Messenger ofاللَّهِ،Allah,صَلَّىmay Allah invoke peaceاللَّهُand blessingsعَلَيْهِ،upon him,وَسَلَّمَ،and grant him peace,فِيinالْخَنْدَقِthe Trench
"We worked with the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, in the Trench,
وَكَانَتْand there wasعِنْدِيwith meشُوَيْهَةٌa little sheepغَيْرُnotسَمِينَةٍfat
and I had a small, lean sheep.
فَقُلْتُ:So I said:وَاللَّهِBy AllahلَوْifصَنَعْتُI preparedهَذِهِthisالشَّاةَsheepلِرَسُولِfor the Messenger ofاللَّهِ،Allah,صَلَّىmay Allah invoke peaceاللَّهُand blessingsعَلَيْهِ،upon him,وَسَلَّمَ.and grant him peace.
So I said: 'By Allah, if I were to prepare this sheep for the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace...'
قَالَ:He said:فَأَمَرْتُSo I orderedامْرَأَتِيmy wifeفَطَحَنَتْand she groundشَيْئًاsomeمِنْofشَعِيرٍbarley
He said: So I ordered my wife and she ground some barley,
فَصَنَعَتْand she madeلَهُfor himمِنْهُfrom itخُبْزًاbreadوَذَبَحْتُand I slaughteredالشَّاةَthe sheepفَشَوَيْتُهَا،and roasted it.
and she made bread for him from it, and I slaughtered the sheep and roasted it.
فَلَمَّاThen whenأَمْسَيْنَاwe entered the eveningوَأَرَادَand desiredرَسُولُthe Messenger ofاللَّهِ،Allah,صَلَّىmay Allah invoke peaceاللَّهُand blessingsعَلَيْهِ،upon him,وَسَلَّمَ،and grant him peace,الانْصِرَافَto depart
Then when evening came and the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, wanted to depart,
قُلْتُ:I said:يَاOhرَسُولَMessenger ofاللَّهِAllah,إِنِّيverily Iصَنَعْتُhave preparedلَكَfor youشُوَيْهَةًa little sheepوَشَيْئًاand a littleمِنْofخُبْزِbread ofالشَّعِيرِbarley
I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I have prepared a small sheep and some barley bread for you,
وَأُحِبُّand I would loveأَنْthatتَنْصَرِفَyou departمَعِيwith meإِلَىtoمَنْزِلِي،my home,
and I would love for you to depart with me to my home,
وَإِنَّمَاand indeedأُرِيدُI wantأَنْthatيَنْصَرِفَshould departمَعِيwith meرَسُولُthe Messenger ofاللَّهِ،Allah,صَلَّىmay Allah invoke peaceاللَّهُand blessingsعَلَيْهِ،upon him,وَسَلَّمَ،and grant him peace,وَحْدَهُ.alone.
and I only want the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, to depart with me alone.'
فَلَمَّاThen whenقُلْتُI saidلَهُto himذَلِكَthatقَالَ:he said:نَعَمْ،"Yes,"
When I said that to him, he said: "Yes,"
ثُمَّThenأَمَرَhe commandedبِصَارِخٍa crierفَصَرَخَ:and he cried out:انْصَرِفُوا"Departإِلَىtoبَيْتِthe house ofجَابِرٍ.Jabir."
Then he commanded a crier, and he cried out: "Depart to the house of Jabir."
فَقُلْتُ:So I said:إِنَّIndeedلِلَّهِto Allahوَإِنَّاand indeed weإِلَيْهِto Himرَاجِعُونَ.are returning.
So I said: "To Allah we belong and to Him we shall return."
وَأَقْبَلَAnd cameرَسُولُthe Messenger ofاللَّهِ،Allah,صَلَّىmay Allah invoke peaceاللَّهُand blessingsعَلَيْهِ،upon him,وَسَلَّمَ،and grant him peace,وَالنَّاسُand the peopleمَعَهُ،with him,
And the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, came with the people,
فَأَخْرَجْتُهَاso I brought it outإِلَيْهِto himفَسَمَّىand he mentioned the name of Allahثُمَّthenأَكَلَateوَتَوَارَدَهَاand partook of it in successionالنَّاسُthe people
so I brought it out to him, and he pronounced the name of Allah and ate, and the people partook of it in succession,
كُلَّمَاwheneverفَرَغَfinishedقَوْمٌa groupقَامُواthey leftوَجَاءَand cameقَوْمٌanother groupحَتَّىuntilصَدَرَdepartedأَهْلُthe people ofالْخَنْدَقِthe Trenchعَنْهَا.from it.
whenever a group finished they left and another group came, until all the people of the Trench had departed from it.
وَرُوِيَAnd it was narratedعَنْfromمُحَمَّدِMuhammadبْنِson ofإِسْحَاقَIshaqأَنَّthatابْنَةًa daughterلِبَشِيرِof Bashirبْنِson ofسَعْدٍSa'dقَالَتْ:said:
And it was narrated from Muhammad ibn Ishaq that a daughter of Bashir ibn Sa'd said:
دَعَتْنِيCalled meأُمِّيmy motherابْنَةُdaughter ofرَوَاحَةَRawahahفَأَعْطَتْنِيand she gave meحَفْنَةَa handful ofتَمْرٍdatesفِيinثَوْبِيmy garment
"My mother, the daughter of Rawahah, called me and gave me a handful of dates in my garment
وَقَالَتْ:and said:يَاOبُنَيَّةُlittle daughterاذْهَبِيgoإِلَىtoأَبِيكِyour fatherبِهَذَا.with this.
and said: 'O little daughter, go to your father with this.'
قَالَتْ:She said:فَأَخَذْتُهَاSo I took themوَانْطَلَقْتُand set offبِهَاwith themفَمَرَرْتُand I passedبِرَسُولِby the Messenger ofاللَّهِ،Allah,صَلَّىmay Allah invoke peaceاللَّهُand blessingsعَلَيْهِ،upon him,وَسَلَّمَ،and grant him peace,
She said: So I took them and set off with them, and I passed by the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace,
وَأَنَاwhile Iأَلْتَمِسُwas seekingأَبِيmy fatherفَقَالَ،and he said,عَلَيْهِupon himالصَّلَاةُbe prayersوَالسَّلَامُ:and peace:
while I was searching for my father. He, upon him be prayers and peace, said:
تَعَالَي"Come hereيَاOبُنَيَّةُ،little daughter,مَاwhatهَذَاis thisمَعَكِ؟with you?"
"Come here, O little daughter, what is this with you?"
قُلْتُ:I said:تَمْرٌDatesبَعَثَتْsentبِهِthemأُمِّيmy motherإِلَىtoأَبِيmy fatherبَشِيرِBashirبْنِson ofسَعْدٍ.Sa'd.
I said: "Dates which my mother sent to my father, Bashir ibn Sa'd."
فَقَالَ:So he said:هَاتِي"Bringبِهِ.them here."
So he said: "Bring them here."
فَصَبَبْتُهُSo I poured themفِيintoكَفَّيْthe two palms ofرَسُولِthe Messenger ofاللَّهِ،Allah,صَلَّىmay Allah invoke peaceاللَّهُand blessingsعَلَيْهِ،upon him,وَسَلَّمَ،and grant him peace,
So I poured them into the two palms of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace,
فَمَاand they did notمَلَأْتُهُمَا،fill them both,ثُمَّthenأَمَرَhe orderedبِثَوْبٍa garmentفَبُسِطَto be spread
and they did not fill them. Then he ordered a garment, and it was spread out.
ثُمَّThenدَحَاhe scatteredبِالتَّمْرِthe datesعَلَيْهِover itفَتَبَدَّدَand they scatteredفَوْقَuponالثَّوْبِthe garment
Then he scattered the dates over it, and they spread out across the garment.
ثُمَّThenقَالَhe saidلِإِنْسَانٍto a personعِنْدَهُ:with him:نَادِ"Call outفِيamongأَهْلِthe people ofالْخَنْدَقِthe Trenchأَنْthatهَلُمُّواcomeإِلَىtoالْغَدَاءِ.the meal."
Then he said to a person with him: "Call out among the people of the Trench to come to the meal."
فَاجْتَمَعَSo gatheredأَهْلُthe people ofالْخَنْدَقِthe Trenchعَلَيْهِaround itفَجَعَلُواand they beganيَأْكُلُونَeatingمِنْهُfrom it
So the people of the Trench gathered around it and began to eat from it,
وَجَعَلَand it beganهُوَitيَزْدَادُincreasingحَتَّىuntilصَدَرَdepartedأَهْلُthe people ofالْخَنْدَقِthe Trenchعَلَيْهِfrom itوَهُوَwhile itيَسْقُطُwas fallingمِنْfromأَطْرَافِthe edges ofالثَّوْبِ.the garment.
and it kept increasing until all the people of the Trench departed from it while it was still spilling over the edges of the garment.
وَمِنْAnd amongآيَاتِهِ،his signs,صَلَّىmay Allah invoke peaceاللَّهُand blessingsعَلَيْهِ،upon him,وَسَلَّمَ،and grant him peace,
And among his signs, may Allah bless him and grant him peace,
مَاwhatلَاdoes notيَعْرِفُهَاknow itإِلَّاexceptالْخَاصَّةُthe elite few
is that which only the elite few know,
وَهِيَand it isمَحَاسِنُthe virtues ofأَخْلَاقِهِhis characterوَأَفْعَالِهِand his actionsالَّتِيwhichلَمْdid notتَجْتَمِعْgatherلِبَشَرٍfor a human beingمِنْbeforeقَبْلِهِhimوَلَاnorتَجْتَمِعُwill they gatherلِأَحَدٍfor anyoneمِنْafterبَعْدِهِ،him,
which are the noble traits of his character and his actions, which were never gathered in any human being before him, nor will they be gathered for anyone after him.
وَذَلِكَAnd that isأَنَّاthat weلَمْhave notنَرَseenوَلَمْnor have weنَسْمَعْheardلِأَحَدٍfor anyoneقَطُّeverصَبْرَهُhis patienceوَحِلْمَهُand his forbearanceوَوَفَاءَهُand his loyaltyوَزُهْدَهُand his asceticismوَجُودَهُand his generosityوَنَجْدَتَهُand his braveryوَصِدْقَand the truthfulness ofلَهْجَتِهِhis speechوَكَرَمَand the nobility ofعَشِيرَتِهِhis clanوَتَوَاضُعَهُand his humilityوَعِلْمَهُand his knowledgeوَحِفْظَهُand his mindfulnessوَصَمْتَهُand his silenceإِذَاwhenصَمَتَhe was silentوَنُطْقَهُand his speechإِذَاwhenنَطَقَhe spoke
And that is because we have never seen nor heard of anyone ever having his patience, his forbearance, his loyalty, his asceticism, his generosity, his bravery, the truthfulness of his speech, the nobility of his clan, his humility, his knowledge, his mindfulness, his silence when he was silent, and his speech when he spoke,
وَلَاnorكَعَفْوِهِhis pardoningوَقِلَّةِand the scarcity ofامْتِنَانِهِ،his reminding of favors,
nor his pardoning and the scarcity of his reminding of favors.
وَلَمْAnd we have notنَجِدْfoundشُجَاعًاa brave manقَطُّeverإِلَّاexceptوَقَدْthat indeedفَرَّhe fled
And we have never found any brave man ever except that he fled:
مِثْلَlikeعَامِرٍAmirفَرَّfledعَنْfromأَخِيهِhis brotherالْحَكَمِAl-Hakamيَوْمَon the day ofالرَّقْمِAl-Raqm
like Amir, who fled from his brother Al-Hakam on the day of Al-Raqm,
وُعُيَيْنَةُand Uyaynahفَرَّfledعَنْfromأَبِيهِhis fatherيَوْمَon the day ofنِسَارٍNisar
and Uyaynah fled from his father on the day of Nisar,
وَبِسْطَامُand Bistamعَنْfromقَوْمِهِhis peopleيَوْمَon the day ofالْعِظَالَى.Al-Izala.
and Bistam from his people on the day of Al-Izala.
وَكَانَAnd there wereلَهُ،for him,صَلَّىmay Allah invoke peaceاللَّهُand blessingsعَلَيْهِ،upon him,وَسَلَّمَ،and grant him peace,وَقَائِعُcampaignsمِثْلُsuch asأُحُدٍUhudوَحُنَيْنٍand Hunaynوَغَيْرِهِمَاand others
And he, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, had campaigns such as Uhud and Hunayn and others,
فَلَاand notيَسْتَطِيعُis ableمُنَافِقٌa hypocriteأَنْthatيَقُولَhe saysهَابَhe fearedحَرْبًاwarأَوْorخَافَ.was scared.
yet no hypocrite can ever say that he dreaded war or was afraid.
وَأَمَّاAnd as forزُهْدُهُ،his asceticism,صَلَّىmay Allah invoke peaceاللَّهُand blessingsعَلَيْهِ،upon him,وَسَلَّمَ،and grant him peace,
And as for his asceticism, may Allah bless him and grant him peace,
فَإِنَّهُfor indeedمَلَكَhe ruledمِنْfromأَقْصَىthe farthest part ofالْيَمَنِYemenإِلَىtoشِحْرِShihrعُمَانَOman
he ruled from the farthest part of Yemen to Shihr of Oman,
إِلَىtoأَقْصَىthe farthest part ofالْحِجَازِthe Hijazإِلَىtoعِذَارِthe borders ofالْعِرَاقِIraq
to the farthest part of the Hijaz, to the borders of Iraq,
ثُمَّthenتُوُفِّيَ،he passed away,صَلَّىmay Allah invoke peaceاللَّهُand blessingsعَلَيْهِ،upon him,وَسَلَّمَ،and grant him peace,
then he passed away, may Allah bless him and grant him peace,
وَعَلَيْهِwhile upon himدَيْنٌwas a debtوَدِرْعُهُand his armorمَرْهُونَةٌwas mortgagedفِيforثَمَنِthe price ofطَعَامِfood forأَهْلِهِ،his family.
while he had outstanding debts and his armor was mortgaged for the price of food for his family.
لَمْHe did notيَبْنِbuildدَارًاa houseوَلَاnorشَيَّدَconstructقَصْرًاa palaceوَلَاnorغَرَسَplantنَخْلًاpalm trees
He neither built a house, nor constructed a palace, nor planted palm trees,
وَلَاnorشَقَّdigنَهْرًاa riverوَلَاnorاسْتَنْبَطَbring forthعَيْنًاa springوَاعْتَبِرْand considerبِبُرْدَيْهِhis two cloaksاللَّذَيْنِwhichكَانَhe used toيَلْبَسُهُمَاwear themوَخَاتَمِهِ.and his ring.
nor dug a river, nor brought forth a spring, and consider his two cloaks which he used to wear and his ring.
