مِنْFromأَجْلِsakeذَلِكَthat
For that reason
كَتَبْنَاWe decreedعَلَىuponبَنِيthe Children ofإِسْرَائِيلَIsrael
We decreed upon the Children of Israel
الْمَعْنَىThe meaningعَلَىis uponقِيَاسِthe analogy ofحَالِthe state ofابْنِthe son ofآدَمَAdamكَتَبْنَاWe decreed
The meaning is: upon the analogy of the state of the son of Adam, We decreed
أَوْorعَلَىuponمِثَالِthe example ofحَالِthe state ofابْنِthe son ofآدَمَAdam
or upon the example of the state of the son of Adam,
فَأَبْدَلَso He substitutedعَنْهُfor itمِنْFromأَجْلِsakeذَلِكَthat
so He used "For that reason" in its place
لِأَنَّbecauseالْقِيَاسَanalogyلَاis notيَكُونُexceptإِلَّاbyبِمُلَاحَظَةِobservingالْعِلَّةِthe cause
because analogy is only by observing the cause,
فَكَأَنَّso it is as ifالْقِيَاسَanalogyنَوْعٌis a typeمِنَofالتَّعْلِيلِcausation
so it is as if analogy is a type of causation.
أَرَأَيْتَDid you see
“Did you see”
هُوَitفِيinالْأَصْلِoriginاسْتِفْهَامٌis an interrogationمِنَfromالرُّؤْيَةِvision
is originally an interrogation of vision,
وَلَكِنْbutنُقِلَit was transferredهُنَاhereإِلَىtoمَعْنَىthe meaning ofالتَّنْبِيهِalerting
but it was transferred here to the meaning of alerting
أَوْorشَدِّdrawingالِانْتِبَاهِattentionإِلَىtoالْكَلَامِthe speechالتَّالِيfollowing
or drawing attention to the following speech
مِثْلِlikeمَاwhatيُقَالُis said
such as what is said:
تَرَىDo you seeشَيْئاًsomething?تَسْمَعُDo you hearشَيْئاًsomething?
Do you see something? Do you hear something!
التَّقْدِيمُPrecedingوَالتَّأْخِيرُand delaying
[Preceding and Delaying:]
مِنَFromالْأَشْيَاءِthe thingsالَّتِيthatتُسَبِّبُcauseالصُّعُوبَةَdifficulty
Among the things that cause difficulty
فِيinفَهْمِunderstandingالْكَلَامِthe speech
in understanding speech
التَّقْدِيمُis precedingوَالتَّأْخِيرُand delayingكَمَاasهُوَit isفِيinهَذَاthisالْبَيْتِverseالْمَشْهُورِfamous
is preceding and delaying, as it is in this famous verse:
بُثَيْنَةُButhaynahشَأْنُهَاher matterسَلَبَتْstoleفُؤَادِيmy heart
Buthaynah, her matter stole my heart...
بِلَاwithoutجُرْمٍcrimeأَتَيْتُI committedبِهِitسَلَاماًpeacefully
...without any crime I committed, peacefully.
وَالتَّعْلِيمُAnd teachingبِالْبَعِيدِwith the distant
And teaching by means of the distant:
وَهُوَAnd it isأَيْضاًalsoمِمَّاfrom whatيُسَبِّبُcausesالصُّعُوبَةَdifficultyفِيinالْكَلَامِspeech
And it is also among what causes difficulty in speech,
وَمِنَand fromالْأَمْثِلَةِthe examplesالَّتِيthatتَتَعَلَّقُrelateبِهَذَاto thisالْقَبِيلِcategory
and from the examples that relate to this category:
إِلَّاExceptآلَthe family ofلُوطٍLot
“Except the family of Lot,
إِنَّاindeed Weلَمُنَجُّوهُمْare surely saving themأَجْمَعِينَall
indeed We will save them all,
إِلَّاExceptامْرَأَتَهُhis wife”
except his wife.”
أَدْخَلَHe introducedالِاسْتِثْنَاءَexceptionعَلَىuponالِاسْتِثْنَاءِexception
He introduced an exception upon an exception,
فَصَعُبَso it became difficult
so it became difficult.
