And by the sky containing constellations,

وَ

الْيَوْمِ

the day

الْمَوْعُودِ

promised

And by the promised day,

وَ

شَاهِدٍ

by a witness

وَ

and

مَشْهُودٍ

what is witnessed

And by a witness and what is witnessed,

قُتِلَ

destroyed were

أَصْحَابُ

the companions

الْأُخْدُودِ

of the trench

Cursed be the companions of the trench,

الْمَعْنَى

the meaning

أَنَّ

is that

الْمُجَازَاةَ

the recompense

عَلَى

for

الْأَعْمَالِ

the deeds

حَقٌّ

is true

The meaning is that recompense for deeds is a truth.

إِذَا

when

السَّمَاءُ

the sky

انْشَقَّتْ

splits apart

When the sky splits apart,

وَ

and

أَذِنَتْ

it listens

to

رَبِّ

its Lord

هَا

and

وَ

and

حُقَّتْ

it is obligated

And obeys its Lord, as it is obliged to do,

وَ

and

إِذَا

when

الْأَرْضُ

the earth

مُدَّتْ

is spread out

And when the earth is extended,

وَ

and

أَلْقَتْ

it casts out

مَا

what

فِيهَا

is within it

وَ

and

تَخَلَّتْ

becomes empty

And casts out what is within it and becomes empty,

وَ

and

أَذِنَتْ

it listens

لِ

to

رَبِّ

its Lord

هَا

and

وَ

and

حُقَّتْ

it is obligated

And obeys its Lord, as it is obliged to do,

يَا

O

أَيُّهَا

you

الْإِنْسَانُ

mankind

إِنَّكَ

indeed you

كَادِحٌ

are toiling

O mankind, indeed you are toiling toward your Lord...

الْآيَةُ

the verse

the verse.

الْمَعْنَى

الْحِسَابَ

الْجَزَاءَ

are bound to happen

The meaning is that the reckoning and recompense are certain to occur.
