شُرُوطُConditionsالْمُفَسِّرِof the exegeteفِيinبَابِthe chapterأَسْبَابِof the occasionsالنُّزُولِ:of revelation:

Conditions of the exegete in the chapter of the occasions of revelation:

وَكُلُّAnd allهَذِهِof these- فِي- inالْحَقِيقَةِ -reality -

And all of these - in reality -

لَيْسَتْare notمِنْfromأَسْبَابِthe occasionsالنُّزُولِof revelationفِيinشَيْءٍany way

are not from the occasions of revelation in any way

وَلَيْسَand it is notمِنْfromشُرُوطِthe conditionsالْمُفَسِّرِof the exegete

and it is not from the conditions of the exegete

اسْتِيعَابُهَاcomprehending themوَالْإِحَاطَةُand encompassingبِهَا.them.

comprehending them and encompassing them.

إِنَّمَاIt is only thatيُشْتَرَطُit is stipulatedعَلَىuponالْمُفَسِّرِthe exegeteفِيinهَذَاthisالْبَابِchapter

It is only stipulated upon the exegete in this chapter

مَعْرِفَةُknowledge ofشَيْئَيْنِ:two things:

knowledge of two things:

  • ١ - مَعْرِفَةُ1 - Knowledge ofتِلْكَthoseالْقَصَصِstoriesالَّتِيwhichتَتَضَمَّنُincludeالْآيَاتُthe versesالْكَرِيمَةُnobleالتَّعْرِيضَalludingبِهَاto them
  • 1 - Knowledge of those stories which the noble verses include alluding to them

    فَإِنَّfor indeedفَهْمَunderstandingإِيمَاءِthe hintهَذِهِof theseالْآيَاتِversesوَإِشَارَتِهَاand their indication

    for indeed understanding the hint of these verses and their indication

    لَاdoesيَتَيَسَّرُnot become easyإِلَّاexceptبِمَعْرِفَةِby knowingتِلْكَthoseالْقَصَصِ.stories.

    does not become easy except by knowing those stories.

  • ٢ - الثَّانِي:2 - The second:مَعْرِفَةُknowledge ofتِلْكَthatالْقِصَّةِstoryالَّتِيwhichتُفِيدُbenefitsالتَّخْصِيصَthe specificationلِلْعَامِّof the general
  • 2 - The second: knowledge of that story which benefits the specification of the general

    وَأَمْثَالِand likesذَلِكَof thatمِمَّاfrom whatيُصْرَفُis divertedفِيهِin itالْكَلَامُthe speechعَنْfromظَاهِرِهِits apparentالْمُتَبَادَرِreadily understoodمِنْهُfrom it

    and likes of that from what speech is diverted in it from its apparent meaning readily understood from it

    إِذْsinceأَنَّthatفَهْمَunderstandingمَقَاصِدِthe objectivesالْآيَاتِof the versesوَمَرَامِيهَاand their goals

    since understanding the objectives of the verses and their goals

    لَاdoesيَتَأَتَّىcome aboutبِدُونِwithoutذَلِكَ.that.

    does not come about without that.

    أَكْثَرُMostقَصَصِof the storiesالْأَنْبِيَاءِof the prophetsالسَّابِقِينَformerمِنْis fromرِوَايَاتِnarrationsأَهْلِof the Peopleالْكِتَابِ:of the Book:

    Most stories of the former prophets are from narrations of the People of the Book:

    وَيَنْبَغِيAnd it is fittingأَنْthatيُعْلَمَit be knownهُنَا،here,

    And it is fitting that it be known here,

    أَنَّthatقَصَصَthe storiesالْأَنْبِيَاءِof the prophetsالسَّابِقِينَformer

    that the stories of the former prophets

    لَمْwere notتُذْكَرْmentionedفِيinالْأَحَادِيثِthe traditionsالصَّحِيحَةِauthenticإِلَّاexceptقَلِيلًا،a little,

    were not mentioned in the authentic traditions except a little,

    وَأَنَّand thatهَذِهِtheseالْقَصَصَstoriesالطَّوِيلَةَlongالْعَرِيضَةَand broad

    and that these long and broad stories

    الَّتِيwhichيَتَجَشَّمُundertakeرِوَايَتَهَاnarrating themالْمُفَسِّرُونَ،the exegetes,

    which the exegetes undertake narrating,

    وَيَحُكُونَهَاand they recount themفِيinتَفَاسِيرِهِمْtheir exegesesكُلَّهَاall of them

    and they recount them in their exegeses all of them

    مَنْقُولَةٌare transmittedعَنْfromأَهْلِthe Peopleالْكِتَابِof the BookإِلَّاexceptمَاwhatشَاءَwilledاللَّهُGod- تَعَالَى -.- Most High -.

    are transmitted from the People of the Book except what God - Most High - willed.

    وَقَدْAnd indeedجَاءَit cameفِيinصَحِيحِSahihالْبُخَارِيِّ:al-Bukhari:

    And indeed it came in Sahih al-Bukhari:

    "لَا"Do notتُصَدِّقُواbelieveأَهْلَthe Peopleالْكِتَابِof the Bookوَلَاand do notتُكَذِّبُوهُمْ".disbelieve them".

    "Do not believe the People of the Book and do not disbelieve them".
