The third chapter concerning
أَسْبَابِcausesالنُّزُولِof revelation
the causes of revelation.
[صُعُوبَةُ[The difficultyمَوْضُوعِof the subjectأَسْبَابِof the causesالنُّزُولِ:]of revelation:]
[The difficulty of the subject of the causes of revelation:]
وَمِنَAnd amongالْمَوَاضِيعِthe subjectsالصَّعْبَةِdifficultأَيْضاًalso
And among the difficult subjects also
مَعْرِفَةُis the knowledgeأَسْبَابِof the causesالنُّزُولِ،of revelation,
is the knowledge of the causes of revelation,
وَوَجْهُand the aspectالصُّعُوبَةِof difficultyفِيinهَذَاthisالْبَابِchapterكَذَلِكَlikewise
and the aspect of difficulty in this chapter likewise
اخْتِلَافُis the differenceالْمُتَقَدِّمِينَof the predecessorsوَالْمُتَأَخِّرِينَand the successorsفِيهَا.concerning it.
is the difference of the predecessors and the successors concerning it.
مَعْنَىThe meaningنَزَلَتْof 'it was revealedفِيregardingكَذَا:such and such':
The meaning of 'it was revealed regarding such and such':
وَمَاAnd whatيُسْتَفَادُis derivedمِنْfromاسْتِقْرَاءِinduction ofكَلَامِthe speechالصَّحَابَةِof the Companionsوَالتَّابِعِينَand the Successors
And what is derived from the induction of the speech of the Companions and the Successors
- رَضِيَ- may Allah be pleasedاللَّهُwith themعَنْهُمْ --,
- may Allah be pleased with them -
أَنَّهُمْis that theyلَاdo notيَقُولُونَsay"نَزَلَتْ'It was revealedفِيregardingكَذَا"such and such'
is that they do not say 'It was revealed regarding such and such'
لِمُجَرَّدِfor the mereبَيَانِstatementالْحَدِيثِof the eventالَّذِيthatوَقَعَoccurredفِيduringعَهْدِthe eraالنَّبِيِّof the Prophet- صَلَّى- peaceاللَّهُbeعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَلَّمَ -and blessings -
for the mere statement of the event that occurred during the era of the Prophet - peace and blessings be upon him -
وَكَانَand wasسَبَباًa causeلِنُزُولِfor the revelationتِلْكَof thatالْآيَةِ:verse:
and was a cause for the revelation of that verse:
بَلْRather,إِنَّهُمْtheyيَسْتَعْمِلُونَuseهَذَاthisالتَّعْبِيرَexpressionأَحْيَاناًsometimes
Rather, they use this expression sometimes
لِبَيَانِto explainمَاwhatتَنْطَبِقُappliesعَلَيْهِto itالْآيَةُthe verseوَتَصْدُقُand holds trueعَلَيْهِfor it
to explain what the verse applies to and holds true for
مِمَّاfrom that whichحَدَثَoccurredفِيduringعَهْدِthe eraالنَّبِيِّof the Prophet- صَلَّى- peaceاللَّهُbeعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَلَّمَ -and blessings -
from that which occurred during the era of the Prophet - peace and blessings be upon him -
أَوْorبَعْدَهُafter him
or after him
(فَهُوَ(for itبَيَانٌis an explanationلِصُورَةٍfor one of the formsمِنَofالصُّوَرِformsالَّتِيthatتَصْدُقُapplyعَلَيْهَاto itالْآيَةُ)the verse)
(for it is an explanation for one of the forms that the verse applies to)
فَيَقُولُونَso they sayعِنْدَatذَاكَthat"نَزَلَتْ'It was revealedفِيregardingكَذَا"such and such'
so they say at that time 'It was revealed regarding such and such'
وَلَاand it isيَلْزَمُnot necessaryفِيinمِثْلِsuchهَذَاthisالْمَوْضِعِplaceأَنْthat
and it is not necessary in such a place that
