  • أَوْorتَقَعَoccursحَادِثَةٌan incident
  • Or an incident occurs

  • يَجُودُin which sacrificeفِيهَاin itالْمُؤْمِنُونَthe believersبِأَنْفُسِهِمْwith their livesوَأَمْوَالِهِمْand their wealth
  • in which the believers sacrifice their lives and wealth

  • وَيَجْبُنُand show cowardiceفِيهَاin itالْمُنَافِقُونَthe hypocritesوَيَبْخَلُونَ،and withhold,
  • and the hypocrites show cowardice and withhold,

  • فَيَمْدَحُso praisesاللَّهُAllah- تَعَالَى -- the Most High -فِيinكِتَابِهِHis Bookالْمُؤْمِنِينَ،the believers,
  • so Allah - the Most High - praises the believers in His Book,

  • وَيَذُمُّand blamesالْمُنَافِقِينَthe hypocritesوَيَتَوَعَّدُهُمْand threatens themوَيُنْذِرُهُمْand warns themبِالْعَذَابِwith the punishmentالْأَلِيمِ.painful.
  • and blames the hypocrites, threatens them, and warns them of the painful punishment.

  • أَوْOrتَقَعَoccursحَادِثَةٌan incidentمِنْfromحَوَادِثِincidentsالْغَلَبَةِof victoryعَلَىoverالْأَعْدَاءِthe enemies
  • Or an incident of victory over the enemies occurs

  • وَكَفِّand repellingعُدْوَانِهِمْtheir aggressionوَأَضْرَارِهِمْ،and their harms,
  • and repelling their aggression and harms,

  • فَيَمُنُّso bestows favorاللَّهُAllah- تَعَالَى -- the Most High -بِذَلِكَtherebyعَلَىuponالْمُؤْمِنِينَthe believers
  • so Allah - the Most High - bestows favor thereby upon the believers

  • وَيُذَكِّرُهُمْand reminds themبِنِعْمَتِهِof His favorوَفَضْلِهِand His graceفِيinكِتَابِهِHis Bookالْحَكِيمِ.the Wise.
  • and reminds them of His favor and His grace in His Wise Book.

  • أَوْOrتَحْدُثَarisesحَالَةٌa conditionمِنَfromالْحَالَاتِthe conditions
  • Or a condition arises from among the conditions

  • تَقْتَضِيthat requiresتَنْبِيهاًan alertوَزَجْراًand a deterrentأَوْorإِيمَاءاًan indicationوَتَعْرِيضاًand an allusionأَوْorأَمْراًan orderأَوْorنَهْياً،a prohibition,
  • that requires an alert and a deterrent, or an indication and an allusion, or an order or a prohibition,

  • فَيُنْزِلُso sends downاللَّهُAllah- تَعَالَى -- the Most High -مَاwhatتَقْتَضِيهِrequires itالْحَالُthe situation
  • so Allah - the Most High - sends down what the situation requires

  • وَتَسْتَدْعِيهِand calls for itالْأَوْضَاعُthe circumstancesالْخَاصَّةُ.special.
  • and special circumstances call for.

    فَلَاSo it isبُدَّinevitableلِلْمُفَسِّرِfor the exegeteمِنْfromذِكْرِmentioningهَذِهِtheseالْقُصَصِstories

    So it is inevitable for the exegete to mention these stories

    (الَّتِي(whichلَاdo notتَنْكَشِفُrevealمَعَانِيthe meaningsالْآيَاتِof the versesإِلَّاexceptبِبَيَانِهَا)by explaining them)

    (which the meanings of the verses are not revealed except by explaining them)

    بَطَرِيقِby way ofالْإِجْمَالِ.summary.

    Some examples of these stories:

    فَقَدْIndeedوَرَدَتِthere have occurredالتَّعْرِيضَاتُallusionsبِقِصَّةِto the storyغَزْوَةِof the battleبَدْرٍof BadrفِيinسُورَةِSurahالْأَنْفَالِAl-Anfal

    Indeed, allusions to the story of the Battle of Badr have occurred in Surah Al-Anfal

    وَبِقِصَّةِand to the storyأُحُدٍof UhudفِيinسُورَةِSurahآلِAliعِمْرَانَ،Imran,

    and to the story of Uhud in Surah Ali Imran,

    وَقِصَّةِand the storyغَزْوَةِof the battleالْخَنْدَقِof the TrenchفِيinسُورَةِSurahالْأَحْزَابِ،Al-Ahzab,

    and the story of the Battle of the Trench in Surah Al-Ahzab,

    وَقِصَّةِand the storyالْحُدَيْبِيَةِof Al-HudaybiyyahفِيinسُورَةِSurahالْفَتْحِ،Al-Fath,

    and the story of Al-Hudaybiyyah in Surah Al-Fath,

    وَقِصَّةِand the storyبَنِيof BanuالنَّضِيرِAn-Nadirوَتَبُوكَand TabukفِيinسُورَةِSurahالْبَرَاءَةِ،Al-Bara'ah,

    and the story of Banu An-Nadir and Tabuk in Surah Al-Bara'ah,

    وَوَرَدَتِand there has comeالْإِشَارَةُthe referenceإِلَىtoحَجَّةِthe pilgrimageالْوَدَاعِof FarewellفِيinسُورَةِSurahالْمَائِدَةِ،Al-Ma'idah,

    and reference to the Farewell Pilgrimage has come in Surah Al-Ma'idah,

    وَالْإِشَارَةُand referenceإِلَىtoقِصَّةِthe storyزَوَاجِof marriageزَيْنَبَof Zainab- رَضِيَ- may Allah be pleasedاللَّهُwith her

    and reference to the story of the marriage of Zainab - may Allah be pleased with her
