الرَّجْمُStoningوَاسْتِبْدَالُهُand its replacementبِالْجَلْدِwith floggingوَتَسْحِيمِand blackeningالْوَجْهِthe face

Stoning and its replacement with flogging and blackening the face

تَرَكُواThey abandonedالْعَمَلَactingبِرَجْمِupon the stoning ofالزَّانِيthe adulterer

They abandoned acting upon the stoning of the adulterer,

وَكَانَand the rabbis wereالْأَحْبَارُthe rabbisخَشْيَةَout of fear ofالْفَضِيحَةِthe scandalوَالْعَارِand shame

and the rabbis - out of fear of scandal and shame -

يُخْفُونَconcealingتِلْكَthoseالْآيَاتِversesالَّتِيwhichفِيهَاcontainنَصُّthe text ofهَذَاthisالْحُكْمِrulingالصَّرِيحِexplicit

were concealing those verses which contain the text of this explicit ruling.

٢2كَذَلِكَLikewiseتِلْكَthoseالْآيَاتُversesالَّتِيwhichذُكِرَتْwere mentionedفِيهَاin themبِشَارَةُthe glad tidings ofهَاجَرَHagarوَإِسْمَاعِيلَand Ishmaelعَلَيْهِمَاupon them bothالسَّلَامُbe peace

2 - Likewise, those verses in which the glad tidings of Hagar and Ishmael - peace be upon them both -

بِأَنَّهُthatسَوْفَwillيُولَدُbe bornفِيinأَعْقَابِهِمْtheir posterityمَنْsomeone whoيَبْعَثُهُwill raise himاللَّهُAllahتَعَالَىthe Exaltedنَبِيّاًas a prophetوَرَسُولاًand a messenger

were mentioned, stating that there would be born among their posterity one whom Allah - the Exalted - would send as a prophet and messenger,

وَالْآيَاتُand the versesالَّتِيthatتَحْمِلُcarryإِشَارَاتٍindicationsوَاضِحَةًclearإِلَىtoدِينٍa religionيَظْهَرُthat will appearوَيَبْلُغُand reachكَمَالَهُits perfectionفِيinأَرْضِthe land ofالْحِجَازِthe Hijaz

and the verses that bear clear indications of a religion that will appear and reach its perfection in the land of the Hijaz,

وَتَضِجُّand resoundبِهِwith itجِبَالُthe mountains ofعَرَفَاتٍArafatبِالتَّلْبِيَةِwith the Talbiyah

while the mountains of Arafat resound with it through the Talbiyah,

وَيَؤُمُّand head towardsالنَّاسُpeopleلِزِيَارَتِهَاto visit itمِنَfromالْأَقْطَارِregionsوَالْأَمْصَارِand distant cities

and people head towards to visit it from all regions and distant cities.

وَبِالرَّغْمِDespiteمِنْofأَنَّthe fact thatهَذِهِtheseالْآيَاتِversesلَاdo notتَزَالُcease toتُوجَدُexistفِيinالتَّوْرَاةِthe Torahحَتَّىuntilالْيَوْمِtoday

Despite the fact that these verses still exist in the Torah until today,

كَانَwereالْيَهُودُthe Jewsيَتَأَوَّلُونَهَاinterpreting themبِأَنَّsuch thatهَذِهِtheseالْآيَاتِversesإِنَّمَاmerelyتُخْبِرُforetellبِظُهُورِthe appearance ofذَلِكَthatالدِّينِreligion

the Jews used to interpret them by saying that these verses merely foretell the appearance of that religion,

وَلَكِنَّهَاbut theyلَاdo notتَأْمُرُcommandبِاتِّبَاعِهِfollowing itوَالْخُضُوعِand submittingلَهُto it

but they do not command following it and submitting to it.

وَكَانَتْAnd wasهَذِهِthisالْكَلِمَةُstatementعَلَىonطَرَفِthe tip ofلِسَانِهِمْtheir tonguesمَلْحَمَةٌa calamityكُتِبَتْhas been writtenعَلَيْنَاupon us

And this statement was on the tip of their tongue: "A calamity has been written upon us."

وَلَكِنَّHoweverلَمَّاwhenكَانَwereعَامَّةُthe general mass ofالْيَهُودِJewsأَنْفُسُهُمْthemselvesلَاnotتَقْبَلُacceptنُفُوسُهُمْtheir soulsهَذِهِtheseالتَّأْوِيلَاتِinterpretationsالرَّكِيكَةَflimsyالْبَاطِلَةَand false

However, since the general mass of the Jews themselves could not accept in their souls these flimsy and false interpretations,

وَلَاand norيَعْتَرِفُونَdid they acknowledgeبِصِحَّتِهَاtheir correctnessوَسَلَامَتِهَاand soundness

nor did they acknowledge their correctness and soundness,

كَانُواthey usedيَتَوَاصَوْنَto adviseفِيمَاamongبَيْنَهُمْthemselvesأَنْthatلَاnotيُفْشُواthey divulgeهَذَاthisالسِّرَّsecret

they used to advise one another not to divulge this secret,

وَلَاand notيَتَعَالَنُوهُto make it publicفِيمَاamongبَيْنَهُمْthemselves

and not to make it public among themselves.

أَتُحَدِّثُونَهُمْDo you speak to themبِمَاabout whatفَتَحَhas openedاللَّهُAllahعَلَيْكُمْto youلِيُحَاجُّوكُمْso that they may argue against youبِهِwith itعِنْدَbeforeرَبِّكُمْyour Lord

Do you speak to them about what Allah has revealed to you, so that they may argue against you with it before your Lord?
