the firstaccording to the way of the speech of the first Arabs.
وَعَلَى
And uponهَذَا
thisAnd upon this,
الَّذِي
that whichتَحَقَّقَ
has been establishedعِنْدِي
with meفِي
regardingقَوْلِهِ
His statementتَعَالَى
the Most Highthat which has been established with me regarding His statement - the Most High -
وَالْمُقِيمِينَ
And those who establishالصَّلاةَ
the prayer{And those who establish the prayer}, latter part,
إِنَّهَا
that itفِي
is inحَالَةِ
the state ofالرَّفْعِ
nominativeis that it is in the state of nominative case,
وَيَنْبَغِي
and it is fittingأَنْ
thatيُبَيَّنَ
its meaning be clarifiedمَعْنَاهَا
its meaningحَالََةِ
in the state ofالرَّفْعِ
nominativeand its meaning in the state of nominative should be clarified,
وَاللَّهُ
and Allahأَعْلَمُ
knows bestand Allah knows best.
عِلْمُ
The science ofالْمَعَانِي
meaningsوَالْبَيَانِ
and rhetoricThe Science of Meanings and Rhetoric:
أَمَّا
As forالْمَعَانِي
meaningsوَالْبَيَانِ
and rhetoricAs for meanings and rhetoric,
فَإِنَّهُ
then it isعِلْمٌ
a scienceحَادِثٌ
newly originatedبَعْدَ
afterانْقِضَاءِ
the passing ofعَهْدِ
the era ofالصَّحَابَةِ
the Companionsوَالتَّابِعِينَ
and the Successorsit is a science that originated after the passing of the era of the Companions and the Successors -
رَضِيَ
may Allah be pleasedاللَّهُ
Allahعَنْهُمْ
with themmay Allah be pleased with them -
فَمَا
so whateverيَكُونُ
isمِنْهُ
from itمَفْهُومًا
understoodفِي
inعُرْفِ
the custom ofجُمْهُورِ
the majority ofالْعَرَبِ
the Arabsالأَوْلِينَ
the firstso whatever of it is understood according to the custom of the majority of the first Arabs,
فَهُوَ
then itعَلَى
is uponالرَّأْسِ
the headوَالْعَيْنِ
and the eyethen it is welcomed with utmost respect and acceptance,
وَأَمَّا
and as forالدَّقَائِقُ
the subtletiesوَالأُمُورُ
and mattersالْفَنِّيَّةُ
technicalالَّتِي
whichلاَ
do notيُدْرِكُهَا
grasp themإِلاَّ
exceptالْمُتَعَمِّقُونَ
those who delve deepفِي
inعِلْمِ
the science ofالْمَعَانِي
meaningsوَالْبَيَانِ
and rhetoricand as for the subtleties and technical matters which are not grasped except by those who delve deeply into the science of meanings and rhetoric,
فَلاَ
then we do notنُسَلِّمُ
concedeبِأَنَّهَا
that it isمَطْلُوبَةٌ
requiredفِي
inفَهْمِ
understandingالْقُرْآنِ
the Quranthen we do not concede that it is required in understanding the Quran.
إِشَارَاتُ
Indications ofالصُّوفِيَّةِ
the Sufis[Indications of the Sufis]
وَأَمَّا
And as forإِشَارَاتُ
indications ofالصُّوفِيَّةِ
the Sufisوَاعْتِبَارَاتُهُمْ
and their considerationsAnd as for the indications of the Sufis and their considerations,
فَإِنَّهَا
then theyفِي
inحَقِيقَةِ
the reality ofالأَمْرِ
the matterلَيْسَتْ
are notمِنْ
fromعِلْمِ
the science ofالتَّفْسِيرِ
exegesisin reality, they are not from the science of exegesis,
بَلْ
ratherالْوَاقِعُ
the realityأَنَّهُ
is thatتَمُرُّ
pass byحَالَ
at the time ofاسْتِمَاعِ
listening toالْقُرْآنِ
the Quranالْكَرِيمِ
the Noblerather, the reality is that during the listening to the Noble Quran,
خَوَاطِرُ
thoughtsعَلَى
uponقَلْبِ
the heart ofالسَّالِكِ
the seekerوَتَتَكَشَّفُ
and are uncoveredلَهُ
for himأَشْيَاءُ
thingsthoughts pass over the heart of the seeker and things become unveiled to him,
تَنْشَأُ
originatingمِنْ
fromتَفَكُّرِهِ
his reflectionفِي
inالنَّظْمِ
the arrangementالْقُرْآنِيِّ
Quranicoriginating from his reflection upon the Quranic arrangement,
أَوْ
orالْحَالَةِ
the stateالَّتِي
whichيَتَّصِفُ
he is characterizedبِهَا
by itor the state by which he is characterized,
أَوْ
orالْمَعْرِفَةِ
the knowledgeالَّتِي
whichيَمْلِكُهَا
he possessesor the knowledge which he possesses.
فَهِيَ
So theyأُمُورٌ
are mattersوِجْدَانِيَّةٌ
experientialذَوْقِيَّةٌ
taste-basedلاَ
notتَفْسِيرَ
exegesisلِلآيَاتِ
for the versesالْقُرْآنِيَّةِ
Quranic(They are experiential, taste-based matters, not an exegesis of the Quranic verses).
وَمِثَالُ
And an example ofذَلِكَ
thatأَنْ
is thatيَسْمَعَ
hearsعَاشِقٌ
a loverمُتَيَّمٌ
infatuatedAnd an example of that is that an infatuated lover hears
قِصَّةَ
the story ofلَيْلَى
Laylaوَمَجْنُونٍ
and Majnunthe story of Layla and Majnun,
فَيَتَذَكَّرُ
so he remembersعَشِيقَتَهُ
his belovedso he remembers his beloved,
وَيَسْتَعِيدُ
and he retrievesالذِّكْرَيَاتِ
the memoriesالَّتِي
whichبَيْنَهَا
between herوَبَيْنَهُ
and himand he retrieves the memories that are between her and him.
