اَلْفُنُونِthe artsأَوْorعِلْمٍa scienceمِنَfromالْعُلُومِ،the sciences,

the arts or a science from the sciences,

وَتَكَلَّمَand he spokeعَلَىaccording toقَدْرِthe measure ofقُوَّتِهِhis powerالْبَيَانِيَّةِexplanatoryوَفَصَاحَتِهِand his eloquenceاللُّغَوِيَّةِ،linguistic,

and he spoke according to the measure of his explanatory power and linguistic eloquence,

وَرَاعَىand he observedمَذْهَبَthe schoolأَصْحَابِهِof his companionsوَاتَّخَذَهُand he took itنُصْبَbeforeعَيْنِهِ.his eye.

and he observed the school of his companions and took it before his eye.

وَمِنْand fromهُنَاhereاتَّسَعَexpandedمَجَالُthe field ofالتَّفْسِيرِexegesisاتِّسَاعاًan expansionلَاnotيُحَدُّis boundedقَدْرُهُits measureبِحَدٍّby a boundصَحِيحٍ.correct.

And from here the field of exegesis expanded an expansion whose measure is not bounded by a correct bound.

وَاشْتَمَلَand it includedعَلَىofكُتُبٍbooksلَاnotيُحْصَرُis confinedعَدَدُهَاtheir numberوَلَاand notيُحْصَى.is counted.

And it included books whose number is neither confined nor counted.

وَقَدْand indeedتَوَجَّهَتْturnedطَائِفَةٌa partyمِنَfromالْمُفَسِّرِينَthe exegetesإِلَىtowardهَذِهِtheseالْمَقَاصِدِpurposesكُلِّهَاall of themفِيinتَفَاسِيرِهِمْtheir exegeses

And indeed a party of the exegetes turned toward all of these purposes in their exegeses.

فَمِنْهُمْso of themمَنْis he whoاخْتَارَchoseاللُّغَةَthe languageالْعَرَبِيَّةَArabic

So of them is he who chose the Arabic language

وَمِنْهُمْand of themمَنْis he whoاخْتَارَchoseاللُّغَةَthe languageالْفَارِسِيَّةَPersian

and of them is he who chose the Persian language,

وَنَحَاand inclinedبَعْضُهُمْsome of themنَحْوَtowardالِاخْتِصَارِ،conciseness,

and some of them inclined toward conciseness,

وَأَحَبَّand lovedبَعْضُهُمُsome of themالتَّطْوِيلَelaborationوَالْإِطْنَابَ،and prolixity,

and some of them loved elaboration and prolixity,

وَوَسَّعُواand they widenedأَذْيَالَthe skirts ofالْعِلْمِscienceوَفَرَّعُواand they branchedحَوَاشِيَهُ.its margins.

and they widened the skirts of science and branched its margins.

وَقَدْand indeedأَعْطَىgaveهَذَاthisالْفَقِيرُpoor oneحَظَّهُhis shareمِنْfromهَذِهِtheseالْعُلُومِsciencesوَالْفُنُونِand artsكُلِّهَا،all of them,

And indeed this poor one has been given his share of all these sciences and arts,

وَأَحَاطَand he encompassedبِمُعْظَمِmost ofأُصُولِهَاits foundationsوَجُمْلَةٍand a sumصَالِحَةٍsoundمِنْfromفُرُوعِهَا،its branches,

and he encompassed most of its foundations and a sound sum of its branches,

وَحَازَand he acquiredعَلَىuponنَوْعٍa sortمِنَofالتَّحْقِيقِverificationوَالِاسْتِقْلَالِand independenceفِيinكُلِّeveryبَابٍchapterمِنْfromأَبْوَابِهَاits chapters

and he acquired a sort of verification and independence in every chapter from its chapters

بِوَجْهٍin a wayيُشْبِهُresembling"الِاجْتِهَادَ"ijtihadفِيinالْمَذْهَبِ"the school"(عَلَى(uponاصْطِلَاحِthe terminologyالْأُصُولِيِّينَ)of the usulis)

in a way resembling "ijtihad in the school" (upon the terminology of the usulis).

وَفَنَّانِand two artsآخَرَانِotherأَوْorثَلَاثَةٌthreeمِنْfromفُنُونِarts ofالتَّفْسِيرِexegesisأُلْقِيَتْwere castفِيintoخَاطِرِيmy mindمِنْfromبَحْرِthe ocean ofالْجُودِgenerosityالْإِلَهِيِّ،divine,

And two other arts or three from the arts of exegesis were cast into my mind from the ocean of divine generosity,

فَلَوْso ifسَأَلْتَنِيyou asked meفَأَنَاthen I amتِلْمِيذُa student ofالْقُرْآنِthe Quranالْعَظِيمِthe Mightyبِلَاwithoutوَاسِطَةٍ،intermediary,

so if you asked me, then I am a student of the Mighty Quran without an intermediary,

كَمَاjust asأَنِّيI amأُوَيْسِيُّan Uwaisi ofالرُّوحِthe spiritالنَّبَوِيَّةِprophetic-عَلَى-uponصَاحِبِهَاits ownerأَلْفُthousandسَلَامٍpeaceوَتَحِيَّةٍ-and greeting-

just as I am an Uwaisi of the prophetic spirit - upon its owner be a thousand peaces and greetings -

وَمُسْتَفِيدٌand a beneficiaryبِلَاwithoutوَاسِطَةٍintermediaryمِنَfromالْكَعْبَةِthe Kaabaالْحَسْنَاءِthe beautiful

and a beneficiary without an intermediary from the beautiful Kaaba

وَمُتَأَثِّرٌand affectedبِدُونِهَاwithout itبِالصَّلَاةِby the prayerالْعُظْمَى.the greatest.

and affected without it by the greatest prayer.
