The secret

فِي

in

انْسِجَامِ

the harmony of

الْآيَاتِ

the verses

الْقَصِيرَةِ

short

مَعَ

with

الطَّوِيلَةِ:

the long ones:

The secret in the harmony of short verses with long ones:

وَيَنْبَغِي

And it should

أَنْ

that

يُعْلَمَ

it be known

And it should be known

أَنَّ

that

انْسِجَامَ

the harmony of

الْكَلَامِ

speech

that the harmony of speech

وَمُلَاءَمَتَهُ

and its suitability

وَسُهُولَتَهُ

and its ease

عَلَى

upon

لِسَانِ

the tongue of

الْقَارِئِ

the reader

and its suitability and ease on the reader's tongue

لِكَوْنِهِ

due to its being

يَحُلُّ

taking

مَحَلَّ

the place of

الْأَمْثَالِ

the proverbs

السَّائِرَةِ،

common,ting

due to its taking the place of common proverbs,

أَوْ

or

لِتَكَرُّرِهِ

due to its repetition

فِي

in

الْآيَةِ

the verse

الْكَرِيمَةِ

noble

or due to its repetition in the noble verse

يُوَائِمُ

it harmonizes

بَيْنَ

between

الْكَلَامِ

the speech

الطَّوِيلِ

long

وَالْكَلَامِ

and the speech

الْقَصِيرِ،

short,

it harmonizes between the long speech and the short speech,

وَيُحْدِثُ

and it produces

بَيْنَهُمَا

between them

اتِّزَانًا

a balance

وَانْسِجَامًا،

and harmony,

and produces between them a balance and harmony,

فَيُؤْتَى

so it is brought

تَارَةً

sometimes

بِالْفِقَرِ

with the phrases

الْأُولَى

first

مِنَ

of

الْكَلَامِ

the speech

so sometimes the first phrases of the speech are brought

أَقْصَرَ

shorter

وَأَخْصَرَ

and more concise

مِنَ

than

الْفِقْرَةِ

the phrase

الثَّانِيَةِ،

second,

shorter and more concise than the second phrase,

وَهُوَ

and it

يُفِيدُ

yields

عُذُوبَةً

sweetness

فِي

in

الْكَلَامِ

the speech

وَلَذَّةً

and a pleasure

جَدِيدَةً

new

and it yields sweetness in speech and a new pleasure

كَقَوْلِهِ
like His saying
- تَعَالَى -:
- Exalted is He -:
{خُذُوهُ
{Seize him
فَغُلُّوهُ
then shackle him
(٣٠)
(30)
ثُمَّ
Then
الْجَحِيمَ
Hellfire
صَلُّوهُ
burn him
(٣١)
(31)
ثُمَّ
Then
فِي
in
سِلْسِلَةٍ
a chain
ذَرْعُهَا
whose length
سَبْعُونَ
is seventy
ذِرَاعًا
cubits
فَاسْلُكُوهُ}
insert him}

like His saying - Exalted is He -: {Seize him and shackle him (30) Then burn him in Hellfire (31) Then in a chain whose length is seventy cubits insert him}.

فَكَأَنَّ

So it is as if

الْمُتَكَلِّمَ

the speaker

فِي

in

مِثْلِ

such

هَذَا

this

الْكَلَامِ

speech

So it is as if the speaker in such speech

يُضْمِرُ

conceives

فِي

in

نَفْسِهِ

his mind

conceives in his mind

أَنَّ

that

الْجُمْلَةَ

the sentence

الْأُولَى

first

بِاجْتِمَاعِهَا

by its joining

مَعَ

with

الْجُمْلَةِ

the sentence

الثَّانِيَةِ

second

فِي

in

كَفَّةٍ،

one pan [of a scale],

that the first sentence together with the second sentence are in one pan,

وَالْجُمْلَةَ

and the sentence

الثَّالِثَةَ

third

وَحْدَهَا

alone

فِي

in

كَفَّةٍ

pan

أُخْرَى.

another.

and the third sentence alone is in another pan.

الْآيَاتُ

The verses with three segments:

كَذَلِكَ

Likewise

تَكُونُ

is

الْآيَةُ

the verse

أَحْيَانًا

sometimes

ذَاتَ

possessing

قَوَائِمَ

segments

ثَلَاثٍ،

three,

Likewise, the verse is sometimes of three segments,

مِثْلَ
like
قَوْلِهِ
His saying
- تَعَالَى -:
- Exalted is He -:

their faces}

like His saying - Exalted is He -: {The Day (when) faces will turn white and turn black, as for those whose faces turned black}.

إِلَخِ
Et cetera
الْآيَةِ،
the verse,

إِلَخِ

Et cetera

الْآيَةِ

the verse

وَعَامَّةُ

and the general mass of

الْقُرَّاءِ

readers

يَجْمَعُونَ

group

الْأُولَى

the first

مَعَ

with

الثَّانِيَةِ،

the second,

Et cetera the verse and the general mass of readers group the first with the second,

وَيَعُدُّونَهَا

and they consider it

آيَةً

a verse

طَوِيلَةً.

long.

and consider it a long verse.

الْآيَةُ

The verse

The verse with two pauses:

the verse

الْوَاحِدَةِ

single

فَاصِلَتَانِ

And sometimes in a single verse there occur two pauses

مِثْلَ

like

مَا

what

يَرِدُ

occurs

ذَلِكَ

that

فِي

in

الْبَيْتِ

just like that occurs in the poetic verse also.
