وَتَقْصِيرُهُand its shorteningمِمَّاis from whatهُوَit isفِيinقُدْرَةِabilityالْإِنْسَانِ،of man,

And its shortening is within human ability,

وَلَكِنَّهُand but itإِذَاifتَرَكَهُhe leaves itعَلَىuponسَجِيَّتِهِits natureوَفِطْرَتِهِand innate disposition

but if he leaves it to its nature and innate disposition

مِنْwithoutدُونِwithoutتَمْدِيدٍextensionوَتَمْطِيطٍand stretchingأَوْorتَقْصِيرٍ،shortening,

without extension, stretching, or shortening,

فَإِنَّthen indeedلَهُfor itامْتِدَاداًan extensionخَاصّاً.special.

then it has a special extension.

وَالْإِنْسَانُand manعِنْدَمَاwhenيَبْدَأُhe beginsيَتَنَفَّسُ،he breathes,

And when man begins to breathe,

يَجِدُhe findsالْخِفَّةَthe lightnessوَالسُّرُورَand the joyوَالنَّشَاطَand the activity

he finds lightness, joy, and vigor,

ثُمَّthenيَنْقَطِعُit decreasesالنَّفَسُthe breathشَيْئاًa bitفَشَيْئاًby bit

then the breath subsides bit by bit

حَتَّىuntilيَنْقَطِعَit cuts offكُلِّيّاً،completely,

until it stops completely,

وَيَضْطَرُّand forcesالْإِنْسَانُmanإِلَىtoأَخْذِtakingالنَّفَسِthe breathالطَّازِجِfreshالْجَدِيدِ.new.

and man is forced to take a new fresh breath.

إِنَّindeedهَذَاthisالْامْتِدَادَextensionالْخَاصَّspecialلِلنَّفَسِfor the breathالْإِنْسَانِيِّhuman

Indeed, this special extension of the human breath

لَاnotيُمْكِنُit is possibleأَنْthatيُحَدَّit be limitedبِحَدٍّby a limitمُعَيَّنٍspecificمَعْلُومٍ،known,

cannot be limited by a specific known limit,

بَلْratherهُوَit isمُحَدَّدٌlimitedبِحَدٍّby a limitمُبْهَمٍ،vague,

rather it is limited by a vague limit,

وَمُقَدَّرٌand estimatedبِمِقْدَارٍby an amountمُضْطَرِبٍfluctuatingبَيْنَbetweenأَفْرَادِindividualsالْبَشَرِof mankind

and estimated by a fluctuating amount among individuals of mankind,

قَدْmayيَخْتَلِفُdifferبِزِيَادَةِby an increase ofكِلْمَتَيْنِtwo wordsأَوْorثَلَاثَةٍthree

it may differ by an increase of two or three words

أَوْorقَدْرِthe measure ofالرُّبُعِthe quarterلِلْكِلْمَةِof the wordوَالثُّلُثِand the thirdعِنْدَatشَخْصٍ،a person,

or the measure of a quarter or a third of a word for a person,

وَبِنُقْصَانِand with a decrease ofكِلْمَتَيْنِtwo wordsأَوْorثَلَاثٍthree

and with a decrease of two or three words

أَوْorقَدْرِthe measure ofالرُّبُعِthe quarterلِلْكِلْمَةِof the wordوَالثُّلُثِand the thirdعِنْدَatآخَرَ،another,

or the measure of a quarter or a third of a word for another,

وَلَاand notيُخْرِجُهُit takes him outذَلِكَthatعَنِfromالْحَدِّthe limitالْمُشْتَرَكِ.common.

and that does not take it out of the common limit.

كَمَاasيُسْمَحُit is allowedفِيهِin itبِاخْتِلَافِwith the difference ofعَدَدِnumber ofالْأَوْتَارِthe cordsوَالْأَسْبَابِ،and causes,

Just as a difference in the number of cords and causes is allowed in it,

وَتَقْدِيمِand the precedence ofبَعْضِsomeالْأَرْكَانِpillarsعَلَىoverبَعْضٍothersكَذَلِكَ.as well.

and the precedence of some pillars over others as well.

وَعَلَىand uponكُلٍّallفَإِنَّthen indeedاللَّهَGod- سُبْحَانَهُ- Glorified be Heوَتَعَالَى -and Exalted -

And in any case, God - Glorified and Exalted be He -

قَدْhasاعْتَبَرَconsideredهَذَاthisالْامْتِدَادَextensionلِلنَّفَسِfor the breath

has considered this extension of the breath

(فِي(inحَدِّهِits limitالْمُشْتَرَكِcommonالْوَسَطِ)middle)هُوَit isالْوَزْنَthe meterفِيinكِتَابِهِHis Bookالْكَرِيمِ،Noble,

(in its common middle limit) as the meter in His Noble Book,

وَقَسَّمَهُand He divided itثَلَاثَةَthreeأَقْسَامٍ.parts.

and He divided it into three parts.

  • ١1- الطَّوِيلُ.- The Long.
  • 1 - The Long.

  • ٢2- الْمُتَوَسِّطُ.- The Medium.
  • 2 - The Medium.

  • ٣3- الْقَصِيرُ.- The Short.
  • 3 - The Short.
