إِلَيَّto meأَسْرَعُI hasten،,وَفِيand inلَحْمِيmy fleshأَرْتَعُ1I graze
To me I hasten, and in my flesh I graze.1
ثُمَّthenقَالَhe said::
Then he said:
وَفِيand inالْجَارُودِal-JarudبْنِibnأَبِيAbiسَبْرَةَ2Sabraلَكُمْfor youوَاعِظٌan admonisher
And in al-Jarud ibn Abi Sabra2 there is for you an admonisher.
،,وَفِيand inأَبِيAbiالْحَارِثِal-HarithجُمَيِّنَJumayyinزَاجِرٌa warner
and in Abi al-Harith Jumayyin a warner.
فَقَدْindeedكَانَاthey two wereيُدْعَيَانِbeing invitedإِلَىtoالطَّعَامِfood،,وَإِلَىand toالْإِكْرَامِhonor
Indeed they were invited to food and to honor
،,لِظَرْفِهِمَاfor their wit،,وَحَلَاوَتِهِمَاand their sweetness،,وَحُسْنِand goodnessحَدِيثِهِمَاof their speech،,وَقِصَرِand shortnessيَوْمِهِمَاof their day
for their wit, their sweetness, the goodness of their speech, and the shortness of their day.
وَكَانَاand they two wereيَتَشَهَّيَانِcravingالْغَرَائِبَrare dishes،,وَيَقْتَرِحَانِand proposingالطَّرَائِفَdelicacies،,وَيُكَلِّفَانِand burdeningالنَّاسَpeopleالْمُؤَنَwith expensesالثِّقَالَ3heavy
They craved rare dishes, proposed delicacies, and burdened people with heavy expenses.3
وَيَمْتَحِنَانِand testingمَاwhatعِنْدَهُمْthey haveبِالْكُلَفِwith burdensالشِّدَادِsevere
and testing what they have with severe burdens.
فَكَانَand wasجَزَاؤُهُمْtheir recompenseمِنْfromإِحْسَانِهِمْtheir goodnessمَاthat whichقَدْindeedعَلِمْتُمْyou have known
And their recompense for their goodness was what you have known.

قَالَhe said::مِنْofذَلِكَthat
He said: Of that
أَنَّthatبِلَالَBilalبْنَibnأَبِيAbiبُرْدَةَ4Burda
that Bilal ibn Abi Burda4
كَانَwasرَجُلًاa manعَيَّابًاfault-finding،,وَكَانَand wasإِلَىtowardsأَعْرَاضِhonorsالْأَشْرَافِof noblesمُتَسَرِّعًاhasty
was a fault-finding man, hasty towards the honors of nobles.
فَقَالَand he saidلِلْجَارُودِto al-Jarud::كَيْفَhowطَعَامُfoodعَبْدِof AbdاللَّهِAllahبْنِibnأَبِيAbiعُثْمَانَUthman؟?
He said to al-Jarud: How is the food of Abd Allah ibn Abi Uthman?
قَالَhe said::يُعْرَفُit is knownوَيُنْكَرُand denied
He said: It is known and denied.
قَالَhe said::فَكَيْفَthen howهُوَis heعَلَيْهِupon it؟?
He said: Then how is he upon it?
قَالَhe said::يُلَاحِظُhe watchesاللُّقَمَthe morsels،,وَيَنْتَهِرُand rebukesالسَّائِلَthe beggar
He said: He watches the morsels and rebukes the beggar.
قَالَhe said::فَكَيْفَthen howطَعَامُfoodسَلْمِof Salmبْنِibnقُتَيْبَةَ5Qutayba؟?
He said: Then how is the food of Salm ibn Qutayba?5
قَالَhe said::طَعَامُfood ofثَلَاثَةٍthree،,فَإِنْfor ifكَانُواthey areأَرْبَعَةًfourجَاعُواthey go hungry
He said: Food of three, for if they are four, they go hungry.
قَالَhe said::فَكَيْفَthen howطَعَامُfoodتَسْنِيمِof Tasnimابْنِibnالْحَوَارِيِّal-Hawari؟?
He said: Then how is the food of Tasnim ibn al-Hawari?
قَالَhe said::نُقَطُdropsالْعَرُوسِof the bride
He said: Drops of the bride.
قَالَhe said::فَكَيْفَthen howطَعَامُfoodالْمِنْجَابِof al-MinhabبْنِibnأَبِيAbiعُيَيْنَةَUyayna؟?
He said: Then how is the food of al-Minhab ibn Abi Uyayna?
قَالَhe said::يَقُولُhe says::لَاnoخَيْرَgoodفِيinثَلَاثِthreeأَصَابِعَfingersفِيinصَحْفَةٍa plate
He said: He says: There is no good in three fingers in a plate.
حَتَّىuntilأَتَىhe cameعَلَىuponعَامَّةِmostأَهْلِpeopleالْبَصْرَةِof Basra،,وَعَلَىand uponكُلِّeveryمَنْone whoكَانَwasيُؤْثِرُهُpreferring himبِالدَّعْوَةِwith invitation،,وَبِالْآنِسَةِand with company،,وَالْخَاصَّةِand special treatment،,وَيُحَكِّمُهُand giving him authorityفِيoverمَالِهِhis wealth
Until he came upon most of the people of Basra, and upon everyone who preferred him with invitation, company, and special treatment, and gave him authority over his wealth.
فَلَمْand notيَنْجُescapedمِنْهُfrom himإِلَّاexceptمَنْone whoكَانَwasيُبْعِدُهُdistancing him،,كَمَاjust asلَمْnotيُبْتَلَwas afflictedبِهِwith himإِلَّاexceptمَنْone whoكَانَwasيُقَرِّبُهُbringing him near
None escaped him except one who distanced him, just as none was afflicted with him except one who brought him near.

- 1.لَعَلَّهُ يَقُولُ: إِلَيَّ أَسْرَعُ وَفِي لَحْمِي أَرْتَعُ، أَيْ: إِلَيَّ يُسْرِعُ وَفِي لَحْمِي يَرْتَعُ، أَيْ: إِلَيَّ يُسْرِعُ وَفِي لَحْمِي يَرْتَعُ.
Perhaps he says: To me I hasten, and in my flesh I graze, meaning: to me he hastens and in my flesh he grazes.
- 2.هُوَ الْجَارُودُ بْنُ أَبِي سَبْرَةَ، وَقِيلَ: ابْنُ الْمُعَلَّى، وَكَانَ مِنْ رُوَاةِ الْحَدِيثِ.
He is al-Jarud ibn Abi Sabra, and it is said ibn al-Mu'alla, and he was among the narrators of hadith.
- 3.أَيْ: يُكَلِّفُونَهُمْ مَئُونَةً ثَقِيلَةً.
That is, they would burden them with heavy expense.
- 4.بِلَالُ بْنُ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ بْنِ أَبِي مُوسَى الْأَشْعَرِيِّ، كَانَ قَاضِيَ الْبَصْرَةِ.
Bilal ibn Abi Burda ibn Abi Musa al-Ash'ari, he was the judge of Basra.
- 5.سَلْمُ بْنُ قُتَيْبَةَ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ الْبَاهِلِيُّ، كَانَ أَمِيرًا عَلَى الْبَصْرَةِ.
Salm ibn Qutayba ibn Muslim al-Bahili, he was a governor over Basra.
