وَكُنَّاAnd we were،,كَمَاasقَدْalreadyعَلِمْتَyou knew،,نَخْبِزُwe bakeفِيinكُلِّeveryيَوْمٍdayمَرَّةًonce
And we, as you knew, used to bake once every day.
فَإِذَاThen whenاِجْتَمَعَaccumulatedمِنْfromذَلِكَthatمَكُّوكٌ1a mukkuk (a measure)بِعْتُهُI sold it
Then when there accumulated from that a mukkuk ⟦1⟧, I sold it.
فَقَالَThen saidلَهَاto herزَوْجُهَاher husband::ثَبَّتَmay establishاللهُAllahرَأْيَكِyour opinionوَأَرْشَدَكِand guide you
Her husband said to her: May Allah establish your opinion and guide you.
،,وَقَدْand indeedأَسْعَدَmade happyاللهُAllahمَنْthose whomكُنْتِyou wereلَهُfor himسَكَنًا2a residence/tranquility،,وَبَارَكَand blessedلِمَنْfor those whomجَعَلْتِyou madeلَهُfor himإِلْفًاa companion
And indeed Allah made happy those for whom you were a tranquility ⟦2⟧, and blessed those for whom you made a companion.
وَلِهَذَاAnd for thisوَشِبْهِهِand similarقَالَsaidرَسُولُthe Messengerاللهِof Allah،,صَلَّىmay blessاللهُAllahعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَلَّمَand peace::
And for this and similar, the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:
«"مِنَfromالذَّوْدِ3the few (camels)إِلَىtoالذَّوْدِthe few (camels)إِبِلٌare camels»"
"From a small herd ⟦3⟧ to a small herd are camels."
وَإِنِّيAnd indeed Iلَأَرْجُوhopeأَنْthatيَخْرُجَwill come outوَلَدُكِyour childعَلَىuponعِرْقِكِyour lineageالصَّالِحِthe righteous،,وَسَلَىand followمَذْهَبِكِyour pathالْمَحْمُودِthe praiseworthy
And indeed I hope that your child will come out upon your righteous lineage and follow your praiseworthy path.
وَمَاAnd notفَرَحِيmy joyبِهَذَاin thisمِنْكِfrom youبِأَشَدَّwith more intenseمِنْthanفَرَحِيmy joyبِمَاin whatيُثَبِّتُestablishesاللهُAllahبِكِby youفِيinعُقْبَى4the offspringمِنْofهَذِهِthisالطَّرِيقَةِthe wayالْمَرْضِيَّةِthe pleasing
And my joy in this from you is not more intense than my joy in what Allah establishes through you in the offspring ⟦4⟧ of this pleasing way.
فَنَهَضَThen stood upالْقَوْمُthe peopleبِأَجْمَعِهِمْall togetherإِلَىtoجَنَازَتِهَاher funeral،,وَصَلَّوْاand prayedعَلَيْهَاupon her
Then the people all together stood up to her funeral and prayed upon her.
ثُمَّThenرَجَعُواthey returnedإِلَىtoزَوْجِهَاher husbandفَعَزَّوْهُand they consoled himعَلَىuponمُصِيبَتِهِhis affliction،,وَشَارَكُوهُand they shared with himفِيinحُزْنِهِhis grief
Then they returned to her husband and consoled him upon his affliction, and they shared with him in his grief.

::ثُمَّThenاِنْدَفَعَrushed forwardشَيْخٌan elderمِنْهُمْfrom themفَقَالَand said::
Then an elder from them rushed forward and said:
«"يَاOقَوْمِmy people،,لَاdo notتُحَقِّرُواbelittleصِغَارَsmallالْأُمُورِmatters،,فَإِنَّfor indeedأَوَّلَthe beginningكُلِّof everyكَبِيرٍgreat thingصَغِيرٌis small،,وَمَتَىand wheneverشَاءَwillsاللهُAllahأَنْthatيُعَظِّمَHe magnifiesصَغِيرًاa small thingعَظَّمَهُHe magnifies it،,وَأَنْand thatيُكَثِّرَHe multipliesقَلِيلًاa littleكَثَّرَهُHe multiplies it
"O my people, do not belittle small matters, for indeed the beginning of every great thing is small, and whenever Allah wills to magnify a small thing, He magnifies it, and to multiply a little, He multiplies it."
وَهَلْAnd are notبُيُوتُthe housesالْأَمْوَالِof wealthإِلَّاexceptدِرْهَمٌdirhamعَلَىuponدِرْهَمٍdirham؟?
And are the houses of wealth not but dirham upon dirham?
وَهَلْAnd is notالدِّرْهَمُthe dirhamإِلَّاexceptقِيرَاطٌa qiratإِلَىnext toجَنْبِsideقِيرَاطٍqirat؟?
And is the dirham not but a qirat next to the side of a qirat?
أَوَلَيْسَIs it notكَذَلِكَlikewiseرَمْلُthe sandعَالِجٍ5of 'Alijوَمَاءُand the waterالْبَحْرِof the sea؟?
Is it not likewise the sand of 'Alij ⟦5⟧ and the water of the sea?
وَهَلْAnd didاِجْتَمَعَتْaccumulateأَمْوَالُthe wealthبُيُوتِof the housesالْأَمْوَالِof wealthإِلَّاexceptبِدِرْهَمٍby a dirhamمِنْfromهَهُنَاhere،,وَدِرْهَمٍand a dirhamمِنْfromهَهُنَاhere؟?
And did the wealth of the houses of wealth accumulate except by a dirham from here and a dirham from here?
قَدْIndeed

- 1.المَكُّوكُ: مِكْيَالٌ صَغِيرٌ، وَهُوَ ثَمَانِيَةُ أَرْطَالٍ أَوْ نَحْوُهَا.
The mukkuk: a small measure, it is eight ratls or thereabouts.
- 2.السَّكَنُ: مَا يَسْكُنُ الْمَرْءُ إِلَيْهِ وَيَطْمَئِنُّ بِهِ، وَعَنَى بِهِ الزَّوْجَةَ.
The sakan: that which one finds rest and tranquility in, meaning the wife.
- 3.الذَّوْدُ: مِنْ ثَلَاثٍ إِلَى عَشْرٍ مِنَ الْإِبِلِ.
The dhawd: from three to ten camels.
- 4.الْعُقْبَى: النَّسْلُ وَالذُّرِّيَّةُ.
The 'uqba: offspring and progeny.
- 5.عَالِجٌ: مَوْضِعٌ مَعْرُوفٌ فِي الْبَادِيَةِ بِكَثْرَةِ رِمَالِهِ.
'Alij: a known place in the desert for its abundant sand.
