هَذَاthisمَرَّةًonce

This once.

فَإِنْthen ifوَجَدَhe foundقَيِّمٌ1a caretakerذَلِكَthatالْبُسْتَانِthe orchard

Then if he found a caretaker of that orchard,

رَمَىhe threwإِلَيْهِto himبِدِرْهَمٍa dirhamثُمَّthenقَالَhe said

he threw a dirham to him and said:

اشْتَرِbuyلِيfor meبِهَذَاwith thisأَوْorأَعْطِنِيgive meبِهَذَاwith thisرُطَبًاfresh dates

Buy for me with this, or give me with this fresh dates,

إِنْifكَانَit wasفِيinزَمَانِthe timeالرُّطَبِof fresh dates

if it was the season of fresh dates,

أَوْorعِنَبًاgrapesإِنْifكَانَit wasفِيinزَمَانِthe timeالْعِنَبِof grapes

or grapes if it was the season of grapes.

وَيَقُولُand he saysلَهُto himإِيَّاكَbewareإِيَّاكَbewareأَنْthatتُحَابِينِي2you favor me

And he says to him: 'Beware, beware of favoring me,

وَلَكِنْbutتَجَوَّدْbe generousلِيfor me

but be generous to me,

فَإِنَّكَfor youإِنْifفَعَلْتَyou didلَمْnotآكُلْهُI eat it

for if you do, I will not eat it,

وَلَمْand notأَعُدْI returnإِلَيْكَto you

and I will not come back to you.

وَاحْذَرِand beware ofالْغَبْنَthe cheating

And beware of being cheated,

فَإِنَّforالْمَغْبُونَthe cheated oneلَاnotمَحْمُودٌpraisedوَلَاand notمَأْجُورٌrewarded

for the cheated is neither praised nor rewarded.'

فَإِنْthen ifأَتَاهُhe brought himبِهِwith it

Then if he brought it to him,

أَكَلَhe ateكُلَّallشَيْءٍthingمَعَهُwith him

he ate everything with him,

وَكُلَّand allشَيْءٍthingأُتِيَbroughtبِهِwith it

and everything brought with it.

ثُمَّthenتَخَلَّلَhe picked his teeth

Then he picked his teeth,

وَغَسَلَand washedيَدَيْهِhis hands

and washed his hands,

ثُمَّthenتَمَشَّىhe walkedمِقْدَارَthe amount ofمِائَةِhundredخُطْوَةٍsteps

then he walked about a hundred steps.

ثُمَّthenيَضَعُhe placesجَنْبَهُhis side

Then he lies on his side

فَيَنَامُand sleepsإِلَىuntilوَقْتِthe timeالْجُمُعَةِFriday

and sleeps until Friday prayer time.

ثُمَّthenيَنْتَبِهُhe wakes up

Then he wakes up

فَيَغْتَسِلُand performs ghusl

and takes a bath,

وَيَمْصِيand goesإِلَىtoالْمَسْجِدِthe mosque

and goes to the mosque.

هَذَاthisكَانَwasدَأْبُهُhis habitكُلَّeveryجُمُعَةٍFriday

This was his habit every Friday!!

قَالَhe saidإِبْرَاهِيمُIbrahim

Ibrahim said:

فَبَيْنَاand whileهُوَheيَوْمًاone dayمِنْofأَيَّامِهِhis days

One day while he was

يَأْكُلُeatingفِيinبَعْضِsomeالْمَوَاضِعِplaces

eating in some place,

إِذْwhenمَرَّpassed byبِهِby himرَجُلٌa man

when a man passed by him

فَسَلَّمَand greetedعَلَيْهِupon him

and greeted him,

فَرَدَّand repliedالسَّلَامَthe greeting

so he returned the greeting;

ثُمَّthenقَالَhe said

then he said:

هَلُمَّcomeعَافَاكَmay Allah give you healthاللهُAllah

'Come, may Allah give you health.'

فَلَمَّاand whenنَظَرَhe lookedإِلَىatالرَّجُلِthe man

When he looked at the man

وَقَدْand indeedانْثَنَىturnedرَاجِعًاreturning

and he had turned back

يُرِيدُwantingأَنْtoيَطْفِرَjump overالْجَدْوَلَthe stream

wanting to jump over the stream

أَوْorيَعْبُرَcrossالنَّهْرَthe river

or cross the river,

قَالَhe saidلَهُto him

he said to him:

مَكَانَكَyour placeفَإِنَّforالْعَجَلَةَthe hasteمِنْfromعَمَلِthe workالشَّيْطَانِof the devil

'Stay in your place, for haste is from the work of the devil.'

فَوَقَفَso he stoodالرَّجُلُthe man

So the man stopped,

فَأَقْبَلَand approachedعَلَيْهِtowards himالْخُرَاسَانِيُّthe Khurasani

then the Khurasani turned to him

وَقَالَand said

and said:

تُرِيدُyou wantمَاذَاwhat

'What do you want?'

قَالَhe saidأُرِيدُI wantأَنْtoأَتَغَدَّىI have lunch

He said: 'I want to have lunch.'

قَالَhe said

He said:

وَلِمَand whyذَاكَthat

'And why is that?

وَكَيْفَand howطَمِعْتَyou covetedفِيinهَذَاthis

And how have you craved this?

وَمَنْand whoأَبَاحَpermittedلَكَto youمَالِيmy wealth

And who permitted my wealth to you?'

قَالَhe saidالرَّجُلُthe man

The man said:

أَوَلَيْسَis it notقَدْalreadyدَعَوْتَنِيyou invited me

'Did you not invite me?'

قَالَhe said

He said:

وَيْلَكَwoe to you

'Woe to you,

لَوْifظَنَنْتُI thoughtأَنَّكَthat youهَكَذَاlike thisأَحْمَقُfoolish

if I had thought you were this foolish,

مَاnotرَدَدْتُI would have returnedعَلَيْكَto youالسَّلَامَthe greeting

I would not have returned your greeting.

أَيُحْسِنُis it goodفِيمَاin whatنَحْنُweفِيهِin it

Is it proper in our situation

أَنْthatتَكُونَyou be

that you be

إِذَاwhenكُنْتَyou wereأَنَاIالْجَالِسَthe sitting oneوَأَنْتَand youالْمَارَّthe passing one

when I am sitting and you are passing by,

أَنْthatتَبْدَأَyou initiateأَنْتَyouفَتُسَلِّمَand greet

that you initiate and greet?

فَأَقُولَso I sayأَنَاIحِينَئِذٍthenمُجِيبًاrespondingلَكَto you

Then I say, responding to you:

وَعَلَيْكُمُand upon youالسَّلَامُpeace

'And upon you be peace.'

فَإِنْthen ifكُنْتَyou wereلَاnotآكِلًاeatingشَيْئًاanything

If you were not eating anything,

سَكَتُّI would keep silentأَنَاI

I would keep silent,

وَسَكَتَّand you would keep silentأَنْتَyou

and you would keep silent,

وَمَضَيْتَand you would go onأَنْتَyou

and you would go on,

وَقَعَدْتُand I would sitأَنَاIعَلَىonحَالِيmy state

and I would remain in my state.

وَإِنْand ifكُنْتُI wasآكِلًاeating

But if I was eating,

فَهُهُنَاthen hereوَجْهٌa wayآخَرُanother

then here is another way:

وَهُوَand it isأَنْthatأَبْدَأُI initiateأَنَاI

that I initiate,

فَأَقُولَand sayهَلُمَّcome

and say: 'Come,'

وَتُجِيبُand you respondأَنْتَyouفَتَقُولَand say

and you respond and say:

هَنِيئًاbon appétit

'Enjoy your meal.'

فَيَكُونُso it would beكَلَامٌspeechبِكَلَامٍwith speech

So it would be speech for speech,

فَأَمَّاbut as forكَلَامٌspeechبِفِعَالٍwith action

but as for speech with action,

وَقَوْلٌand wordبِأَكْلٍwith eating

and word with eating,

فَهَذَاthis isلَيْسَnotمِنَofالْإِنْصَافِfairness

this is not from fairness,

وَهَذَاand thisيَخْرُجُgoes outعَلَيْنَاupon usفَضْلًاa surplusكَبِيرًاlarge

and this causes us a great loss.'

قَالَhe said

He said:

فَوَرَدَand came uponعَلَىuponالرَّجُلِthe manشَيْءٌsomething

So something came upon the man

لَمْnotيَكُنْwasفِيinحِسَابِهِhis account

that was not in his calculation.
