إِلَيْهِto himكِتَابَهُhis book«ٱلزَّرْعَ"The Cultivationوَٱلنَّخْلَ»and the Palm Tree"
to him his book "The Cultivation and the Palm Tree"
فَمَنَحَهُso he granted himجَائِزَةًa prizeمِقْدَارُهَاits amountخَمْسَةُfiveآلَافِthousandدِينَارٍ.dinars.
so he granted him a prize amounting to five thousand dinars.
وَفِيAnd inأَخْبَارِهِhis accountsأَنَّهُthat heزَارَvisitedسَامَرَّاءَSamarraأَيْضاً،also,
And according to his accounts, he also visited Samarra,
وَٱللَّاذِقِيَّةَ،and Latakia,وَحَلَبَ،and Aleppo,
and Latakia, and Aleppo,
إِلَىٰuntilأَنْthatٱسْتَقَرَّhe settledفِيinٱلْبَصْرَةِBasraمَرْكَزِthe center ofتَأْلِيفِهِhis compositionوَكِتَابَاتِهِ،and his writings,
until he settled in Basra, the center of his composition and writings,
وَفِيهَاand in itشَرَعَhe beganيُصَنِّفُto classifyوَيُؤَلِّفُ،and author,
and in it he began to classify and author,
فَأَخَذَتْso beganحَيَاتُهُhis lifeتَتَبَدَّلُto changeمِنَfromٱلْفَقْرِpovertyإِلَىٰtoٱلْغِنَىٰ،wealth,
so his life began to change from poverty to wealth,
وَمِنَand fromٱلصَّنْعَةِobscurityإِلَىٰtoٱلْإِنْتِشَارِ،fame,
and from obscurity to fame,
حَتَّىٰuntilذَاعَspreadصِيتُهُhis reputationوَمَلَأَand filledدُنْيَاهُ.his world.
until his reputation spread and filled his world.
كَانَWasٱلْجَاحِظُAl-Jahizأَسْوَدَblackٱلْلَّوْنِin colorكَجَدِّهِlike his grandfatherفِزَارَةَ،Fizarah,
Al-Jahiz was black in color like his grandfather Fizarah,
قَصِيراً،short,دَمِيماً،ugly,جَاحِظَbulgingٱلْعَيْنَيْنِ،eyed,قَبِيحَuglyٱلْمَنْظَرِ.in appearance.
short, ugly, bulging-eyed, and ugly in appearance.
إِلَىٰUntilأَنْthatقِيلَit was saidفِيهِ:about him:
Until it was said about him:
لَوْIfيُمْسَخُwere metamorphosedٱلْخِنْزِيرُthe pigمَسْخاًmetamorphosisثَانِياًsecond
If the pig were metamorphosed a second time
مَاit wouldكَانَbeإِلَّاexceptدُونَless thanقُبْحِthe ugliness ofٱلْجَاحِظِAl-Jahiz
It would not be except less than the ugliness of Al-Jahiz
وَهُوَAnd heنَفْسُهُhimselfكَانَwasيَتَحَدَّثُtalkingعَنْaboutقُبْحِهِ.his ugliness.
And he himself used to talk about his ugliness.
فَقَدْFor indeedرُوِيَit was narratedأَنَّthatٱمْرَأَةًa womanطَلَبَتْaskedمِنْهُhimأَنْtoيَصْطَحِبَهَاaccompany herإِلَىٰtoدُكَّانِthe shop ofأَحَدِone ofٱلصَّاغَةِ،the goldsmiths,
For it is narrated that a woman asked him to accompany her to the shop of one of the goldsmiths,
فَلَمَّاand whenوَصَلَتْshe arrivedهُنَاكَthereقَالَتْshe saidلِلصَّائِغِ:to the goldsmith:«مِثْلُ"Likeهَذَا»this"وَٱنْصَرَفَتْ.and left.
and when she arrived there, she said to the goldsmith: "Like this," and left.
فَسَأَلَSo askedٱلْجَاحِظُAl-Jahizٱلصَّائِغَ،the goldsmith,مَاذَاwhatقَدْdidعَنَتِmeanٱلْمَرْأَةُthe womanبِقَوْلِهَاby her sayingذَاكَ،that,
Al-Jahiz asked the goldsmith what the woman meant by saying that,
فَأَجَابَهُso he answered himبِأَنَّهَاthat sheقَدْhadطَلَبَتْrequestedرَسْمَdrawingصُورَةِthe picture ofشَيْطَانٍa devilعَلَىٰonفَصِّthe bezel ofخَاتَمِهَا،her ring,
and he answered him that she had requested the drawing of a devil's picture on the bezel of her ring,
فَٱصْطَحَبَكَso she accompanied youلِتَمْثِيلِto representصُورَتِهِ.his image.
so she accompanied you to represent his image.
وَهَذَاAnd thisمَاwhatيُؤَكِّدُconfirmsبَشَاعَةَthe hideousnessٱلصُّورَةِof the imageٱلَّتِيthatكَانَhe wasعَلَيْهَا.upon it.
And this confirms the hideousness of the image that he was upon.
وَمَهْمَاAnd whateverتَكُنْmight beتِلْكَthatٱلْبَشَاعَةُ،hideousness,
And whatever that hideousness might be,
فَإِنَّindeedٱلْجَاحِظَAl-Jahizلَمْdid notيَكُنْbeثَقِيلَheavyٱلظِّلِّ،in spirit,
Al-Jahiz was not heavy-spirited,
وَإِنَّمَاbut ratherكَانَhe wasلَطِيفاًdelightfulمَحْبُوباً،beloved,عَذْبَsweetٱللِّسَانِ،of tongue,قَوِيَّstrongٱلشَّخْصِيَّةِ.in personality.
rather, he was delightful, beloved, sweet of tongue, and strong in personality.
إِسْتَطَاعَHe was ableبِصَفَاءِby the purity ofقَلْبِهِ،his heart,وَصِدْقِand the truthfulness ofوَاقِعِيَّتِهِ،his realism,وَنَفْسِيَّتِهِand his soulٱلْمَرِحَةِcheerful
He was able, by the purity of his heart, the truthfulness of his realism, and his cheerful soul,
أَنْtoيُجَمِّلَbeautifyبَشَاعَتَهُhis hideousnessوَيُزِيلَand removeمَاwhatفِيهَاin itمِنْofقَرَفٍaversionوَٱشْمِئْزَازٍ.and disgust.
to beautify his hideousness and remove what was in it of aversion and disgust.
لَقَدْIndeedتَمَتَّعَhe enjoyedبِطَلَاوَةِthe sweetness ofٱلْحَدِيثِ،speech,وَرُطُوبَةِthe freshness ofٱلْفُكَاهَةِ،humor,وَرِقَّةِand the delicacy ofٱلدُّعَابَةِ.joking.
He enjoyed the sweetness of speech, the freshness of humor, and the delicacy of joking.
وَمُنِحَAnd was grantedأَبُوAbuعُثْمَانَUthmanذَكَاءًintelligenceفَائِقاً،superior,وَمُلَاحَظَةًand observationدَقِيقَةً،precise,وَصَرَاحَةًand franknessمُطْلَقَةً،absolute,
Abu Uthman was granted superior intelligence, precise observation, absolute frankness,
وَعَقْلاًand a mindرَاجِحاً،sound,وَثِقَةًand confidenceوَتَفَاؤُلاًand optimismعَمِيقَيْنِdeepمَاwhichجَعَلَهُmade himرَجُلاًa manعَزِيزَrespectedٱلْجَانِبِof sideغَيْرَnotمَكْرُوهٍ،hated,وَمَحْبَّباًand belovedغَيْرَnotمُحْتَقَرٍ.despised.
and a sound mind, and deep confidence and optimism which made him a man of respected standing, not hated, and beloved, not despised.
يَنْتَظِرُWaits forٱلنَّاسُpeopleفَرَحَهُhis joyٱلْحَاضِرَ،present,وَبَدِيهَتَهُand his readinessٱلْيَقِظَةَ،vigilant,
People await his present joy and his vigilant wit,
إِنْتِظَارَهُمْas they awaitكِتَابَاتِهِhis writingsوَنَوَادِرَهُand his anecdotesوَطَرَائِفَهُ.and his witty stories.
just as they await his writings, anecdotes, and witty stories.
ظَلَّRemainedٱلْجَاحِظُAl-Jahizعَطَاءًa givingيَفِيضُ،overflowing,وَفِكْراًand a thoughtيَدْفُقُ،gushing,
Al-Jahiz remained an overflowing giving and a gushing thought,
حَتَّىٰuntilأُصِيبَhe was struckبِٱلْفَالِجِby hemiplegiaثُمَّthenبِٱلنِّقْرِسِ.by gout.
until he was struck by hemiplegia and then by gout.
وَقَدْAnd indeedعَانَىٰsufferedأَبُوAbuعُثْمَانَUthmanمِنْfromهَذِهِtheseٱلْأَمْرَاضِdiseasesآلَاماًpainsشَدِيدَةًsevere
Abu Uthman suffered severe pains from these diseases
قَضَتْthat crushedعَلَىٰuponعُنْفُوَانِthe vigor ofرَجُلٍa manأَرَادَwho wantedأَنْtoيَسْتَمِرَّcontinueبِعَطَائِهِwith his givingٱلْفِكْرِيِّintellectualمِنْforأَجْلِthe sake ofٱلْحَيَاةِlifeوَٱلْإِنْسَانِ.and man.
that crushed the vigor of a man who wanted to continue his intellectual giving for the sake of life and mankind.
