The People of Khurasan
«نَبْدَأُWe begin withبِأَهْلِthe people ofخُرَاسَانَ»Khurasan
We begin with the people of Khurasan.
،,لِإِكْثَارِbecause of the abundance ofالنَّاسِthe peopleفِيinأَهْلِthe people ofخُرَاسَانَKhurasan
because of the abundance of people in Khurasan.
،,وَنَخُصُّand we single outبِذَلِكَwith thatأَهْلَthe people of«مَرْوَ»1Marw
and we single out in particular the people of Marw.
،,بِقَدْرِto the extentمَاthatخُصُّواthey were singled outبِهِwith it
to the extent that they were singled out.
::قَالَsaidأَصْحَابُنَاour companions
Our companions said:
::يَقُولُsaysالْمَرْوَزِيُّ2the Marwazi
The Marwazi says:
لِلزَّائِرِto the visitor
to the visitor
،,إِذَاwhenأَتَاهُhe came to him
when he came to him.
،,وَلِلْجَلِيسِand to the companion
and to the companion
،,إِذَاwhenطَالَbecame longجُلُوسُهُhis sitting
when his sitting became long.
::«تَغَدَّيْتَ"Have you had lunchالْيَوْمَ»today?"
"Have you had lunch today?"
؟?
?
فَإِنْAnd ifقَالَhe said::«نَعَمْ»"Yes"
And if he said, "Yes,"
،,قَالَhe would say
he would say:
::«لَوْلَا"Had it not been thatأَنَّكَyouتَغَدَّيْتَhad lunch
"Had it not been that you had lunch,
لَغَدَّيْتُكَI would have fed you lunch
I would have fed you lunch
بِغَدَاءٍwith a lunchطَيِّبٍ»delicious"
with a delicious lunch."
؛;وَإِنْAnd ifقَالَhe said::«لَا»"No"
And if he said, "No,"

قَالَhe would say
he would say:
::«لَوْ"Ifكُنْتَyou were
"If you were
تَغَدَّيْتَto have had lunch
to have had lunch,
،,لَسَقَيْتُكَI would have given you to drink
I would have given you to drink
خَمْسَةَfiveأَقْدَاحٍ»cups"
five cups."
فَلَاSo notيَصِيرُbecomesفِيinيَدِهِhis hand
So nothing becomes in his hand
عَلَىonالْوَجْهَيْنِthe two ways
in either case
قَلِيلٌlittleوَلَاnorكَثِيرٌmuch
neither little nor much.

وَكُنْتُAnd I wasفِيinمَنْزِلِthe house of«ابْنِIbnأَبِيAbiكَرِيمَةَ»3Karimah
And I was in the house of Ibn Abi Karimah.
،,وَأَصْلُهُand his originمِنْfromمَرْوَMarw
and his origin was from Marw.
،,فَرَآنِيand he saw meأَتَوَضَّأُperforming ablutionمِنْfromكُوزٍ4a jug
and he saw me performing ablution from a jug
خَزَفٍof earthenware
of earthenware.
،,فَقَالَand he said
And he said:
::«سُبْحَانَ"Glory be toاللهِAllah
"Glory be to Allah,
،,تَتَوَضَّأُyou perform ablutionبِالْعَذْبِwith sweet water
you perform ablution with sweet water,
،,وَالْبِئْرُand the wellلَكَfor youمُعَرَّضَةٌpresent
and the well is available to you?"
؟?
?
قُلْتُI said
I said:
::«لَيْسَ"It is notبِعَذْبٍsweet
"It is not sweet,
،,إِنَّمَاonlyهُوَit isمِنْfromمَاءِthe water ofالْبِئْرِ»the well"
it is only from the water of the well."

قَالَHe said
He said:
::فَتُفْسِدُThen you spoilعَلَيْنَاfor usكُوزَنَاour jugبِالْمُلُوحَةِwith the saltiness
Then you spoil our jug with the saltiness.

فَلَمْAnd I did notأَدْرِknow
And I did not know
كَيْفَhowأَتَخَلَّصُI could get ridمِنْهُof him
how I could get rid of him.

وَحَدَّثَنِيAnd told meعَمْرُوAmrبْنُibnنُهَيْوِي5Nuhaywi
And Amr ibn Nuhaywi told me:
قالَHe said
He said:
::«تَغَدَّيْتُ"I had lunchيَوْمًاone day
"I had lunch one day
عِنْدَat the place ofالْكِنْدِيِّal-Kindi
at the place of al-Kindi,
