وَقَالَand he saidفِيهَاin itأَيْضًا:also:
And he said in it also:
رَأَيْتُI sawقُدُورَpotsالنَّاسِof peopleسُودًاblackعَلَىonالصَّلَى،the fire
I saw people's pots black upon the fire,

...
وَقُدْرُand the potالرَّقَاشِيِّيْنَof the Raqashiyyinزَهْرَاءُbrightكَالْبَدْرِ1like the full moon
And the pot of the Raqashiyyin is bright like the full moon ⟦1⟧
وَلَوْand even ifجِئْتُهَاI brought itمَلْأَىfullعَبِيطًاfresh meatمُجَزَّلًاcut in pieces......
And even if I brought it full of fresh meat cut in pieces, ...
لَأَخْرَجَتْit would bring outمَاwhatفِيهَاin itعَلَىonطَرَفِthe edgeالظُّفُرِof the nail
it would bring out what is in it on the edge of the nail.
يُبَيِّنُهَاit shows itلِلْمُعْتَفِيto the seeker of hospitalityبِفِنَائِهِمْin their courtyard......ثَلَاثٌthreeكَحَظِّlike the shareالثَّاءِof the letter thaمِنْfromنُقَطِthe dotsالْحَبْرِ2of ink
It shows it to the seeker of hospitality in their courtyard, three [marks] like the share of the letter tha from the dots of ink ⟦2⟧
تَبَيَّنُit becomes clearفِيinمِحْرَاثِهَاits plowshareأَنَّthatعُودَهُits woodسَلِيمٌsoundصَحِيحٌ،healthy,لَمْnotيُصِبْهُit hit itأَذَىharmالْجَمْرِ3of the ember
It becomes clear in its plowshare that its wood is sound, healthy, not harmed by the ember ⟦3⟧
تَرُوحُit comes in the eveningعَلَىtoحَيِّthe tribeالرَّبَابِof al-Rababوَدَارِمٍand Darimوَسَعْدٍ،and Sa'd,وَتَعْرُوهَاand it visits itقَرَاضِبَةُthe cuttersالْفَزْرِ4of the chunk
It comes in the evening to the tribe of al-Rabab and Darim and Sa'd, and the cutters of the chunk visit it ⟦4⟧
وَلِلْحَيِّand for the tribeعَمْرِوٍof 'Amrنَفْحَةٌa breathمِنْfromسِجَالِهَاits bucketsوَتَغْلِبُand Taghlibوَالْبِيضُand the whiteاللَّهَامِيمُthe nobleمِنْfromبَكْرٍ5Bakr
And for the tribe of 'Amr a breath from its buckets, and Taghlib and the white noble ones from Bakr ⟦5⟧
إِذَاwhenمَاindeedتَنَادَوْاthey call each otherبِالرَّحِيلِfor departureسَعَىhastensبِهَاwith itأَمَامَهُمُbefore themالْحَوْلِيُّthe yearlingمِنْfromوَلَدِthe offspringالذَّرِّ6of ants
When they call each other for departure, the yearling from the offspring of ants hastens with it before them ⟦6⟧
وَقَالَand saidبَعْضُsomeالتَّمِيمِيِّيْنَ،of the Tamimis,وَهُوَand heيَهْجُوsatirizesابْنَthe sonحَبَّارٍ:of Habbar:
And some of the Tamimis said, satirizing Ibn Habbar:
لَوْifأَنَّthatقِدْرًاa potبَكَتْweptمِنْfromطُولِlength ofمَاwhatحُبِسَتْit was detained......
If a pot wept from the long time it was detained, ...
مِنَfromالْحُفُوفِthe scrapingبَكَتْweptقِدْرُthe potابْنِof the sonحَبَّارٍ7of Habbar
from scraping, the pot of Ibn Habbar would weep ⟦7⟧
مَاnotمَسَّهَاtouched itدَسَمٌfatمُذْsinceفُضَّwas extractedمَعْدِنُهَاits ore......
No fat touched it since its ore was extracted, ...
وَلَاand notرَأَتْit sawبَعْدَafterنَارِthe fireالْقَيْنِof the blacksmithمِنْanyنَارٍfire
and it saw no fire after the fire of the blacksmith.
وَالشُّعُوبِيَّةُand the Shu'ubiyyaوَالْآزَادْمَرْدِيَّةُ8and the Azadmardiyyaالْمُبْغِضُونَthe hatersلِآلِof the familyالنَّبِيِّof the Prophetصَلَّىmay ... prayاللهُAllahعَلَيْهِupon himوَسَلَّمَand peaceوَأَصْحَابِهِ،and his companions,
And the Shu'ubiyya and the Azadmardiyya ⟦8⟧, the haters of the family of the Prophet, may Allah pray upon him and peace, and his companions,
مِمَّنْfrom those whoفَتَحَopenedالْفُتُوحَ،the conquests,وَقَتَلَand killedالْمَجُوسَ،the Magians,وَجَاءَand broughtبِالْإِسْلَامِ،Islam,
from those who opened the conquests, and killed the Magians, and brought Islam,
تَزَيَّدَexaggeratedفِيinجُشُوبَةِthe roughnessعَيْشِهِمْ،of their life,وَخُشُونَةِand the harshnessمَلْبَسِهِمْ،of their clothing,وَتَنَقُّصَand belittledمِنْfromنَعِيمِهِمْtheir luxuryوَرَفَاهَةِand the comfortعَيْشِهِمْ.of their life.
exaggerated in the roughness of their life and the harshness of their clothing, and belittled their luxury and the comfort of their life.
وَهُمْand theyمِنْamongأَحْسَنِthe bestالْأُمَمِof nationsحَالًاstateمَعَwithالْغَيْثِ،the rain,وَأَسْوَأُهُمْand the worst of themحَالًاstateإِذَاwhenخَفَّتِbecame lightالسَّحَابُ.the clouds.
And they are among the best of nations in state with rain, and the worst of them in state when the clouds become light.

- 2.يَعْنِي أَنَّهَا تَبِينُ بِثَلَاثِ نُقَطٍ كَحَظِّ الثَّاءِ مِنْ نُقَطِ الْحَبْرِ؛ لِأَنَّ الثَّاءَ لَهَا ثَلَاثُ نُقَطٍ.
He means that it is shown by three dots like the share of the letter tha from the dots of ink, because tha has three dots.
- 3.الْمِحْرَاثُ: الْخَشَبَةُ الَّتِي تُقْلَبُ بِهَا الْأَرْضُ، وَيُقَالُ لَهَا أَيْضًا سِكَّةُ الْحَرْثِ.
Al-mihrath is the wood with which the earth is turned, also called the plowshare.
- 4.الْقَرَاضِبَةُ: جَمْعُ قِرْضَابٍ، وَهُوَ الْقَاطِعُ؛ وَالْفَزْرُ: الْقِطْعَةُ مِنَ اللَّحْمِ.
Al-qaradiba is plural of qirdab, meaning cutter; and al-fazr is a piece of meat.
- 5.النَّفْحَةُ: النَّفْسُ الْوَاحِدَةُ مِنَ الرِّيحِ؛ وَالسِّجَالُ: جَمْعُ سَجْلٍ، وَهُوَ الدَّلْوُ الْعَظِيمَةُ.
Al-nafha is a single breath of wind; al-sijal is plural of sajl, which is the large bucket.
- 6.الْحَوْلِيُّ مِنْ وَلَدِ الذَّرِّ: الصَّغِيرُ مِنَ النَّمْلِ، يَعْنِي أَنَّهَا خَفِيفَةٌ تُحْمَلُ بِسُرْعَةٍ.
Al-hawli from the offspring of ants is the small ant, meaning it is light and carried quickly.
- 7.الْحُفُوفُ: صَوْتُ النَّارِ عِنْدَ الْإِحْرَاقِ، أَوْ صَوْتُ الْقِدْرِ عِنْدَ الْغَلَيَانِ.
Al-hufuf is the sound of fire when burning, or the sound of a pot when boiling.
- 8.الْآزَادْمَرْدِيَّةُ: نِسْبَةٌ إِلَى آزَادْمَرْد، وَهِيَ كَلِمَةٌ فَارِسِيَّةٌ تَعْنِي الْحُرَّ الشُّجَاعَ، وَقَدْ كَانُوا قَوْمًا مِنَ الْمَجُوسِ يُبْغِضُونَ الْعَرَبَ.
Al-Azadmardiyya is a relation to Azadmard, a Persian word meaning the free brave man; they were a people from the Magians who hated the Arabs.
