كَأَنَّas ifالْكُهُولَthe old menالشُّمْطَwhite-hairedفِيinحَجَرَاتِهَاits enclosed spaces

أَسَابِيَّthe waist-wrappersالْعَنَّاسِof al-Annasمَعَwithالْإِزَارِthe loincloth
The waist-wrappers of al-Annas along with the loincloth.
وَقَامَand he wentإِلَىtoسُلَافَةٍwineمُسْلَحِبٍّlong-bodied

رَثِيمِthinالْأَنْفِof noseمَرْبُوبٍmendedبِقَارٍwith pitch

Al-Kuhul: plural of kahl, meaning a man who has reached forty. Al-Shumt: plural of ashamat, meaning one whose whiteness mixes with the black of his hair. Taghtarish: it struts and acts arrogantly in its walk. Yajfil: it becomes agitated and waves.
- 4.الْتِطَامُ الْأَمْوَاجِ: ضَرْبُ بَعْضِهَا بَعْضًا. الْعَوَائِذُ: النُّوقُ الْحَوَامِلُ أَوْ ذَوَاتُ الْأَوْلَادِ. الدُّهْمُ: السُّودُ. الْمَحَلَّةُ: مَوْضِعُ الْحُلُولِ وَالنُّزُولِ. قَيِّلَ: نَامَ فِي الْقَائِلَةِ، وَهِيَ وَسَطَ النَّهَارِ.
Clashing of waves: some striking others. Al-‘Awa'idh: she-camels that are pregnant or have young. Al-Duhm: black ones. Al-Mahallaa: the place of alighting and stopping. Qayyila: slept during the midday rest (al-qaylulah), which is the middle of the day.

Ihtadamāt: its boiling became intense. Yuz'zi'uha: it shakes and agitates it. Al-Afkal: trembling and shivering.
- 6.الرَّوَاسِي: الثَّوَابِتُ مِنَ الْجِبَالِ أَوِ الْأَرْضِ، وَالْمُرَادُ هُنَا الْقُدُورُ الثَّوَابِتُ. رُكُودًا: سَاكِنَةً. نَابَهُ: أَصَابَهُ وَنَزَلَ بِهِ.
Al-Rawasi: the firm ones from mountains or earth, and here meant the firm pots. Rukūdan: still. Nābah: befell him and came down upon him.
- 7.ضَافَ: نَزَلَ بِهِ ضَيْفًا. أَبُو السَّحْمَاءِ: كُنْيَةُ سُحَيْمِ بْنِ عَامِرٍ. الْفَرَزْدَقُ: هُوَ هَمَّامُ بْنُ غَالِبٍ، شَاعِرٌ مَشْهُورٌ.
Ḍāfa: he came down upon him as a guest. Abū al-Saḥmā': the kunya of Suḥaym ibn ʻĀmir. Al-Farazdaq: he is Hammām ibn Ghālib, a famous poet.
- 8.يَجُرُّ مِنْ عَجَلٍ: يُسْرِعُ فِي مَشْيِهِ وَيَجُرُّ إِزَارَهُ مِنَ الْعَجَلَةِ. الْأَسَابِيُّ: الْأُزُرُ، وَاحِدُهَا سِبٌّ. الْعَنَّاسُ: اسْمُ ثَوْبٍ أَوْ رَجُلٍ. مَعَ الْإِزَارِ: أَيْ مَعَ ثَوْبِهِ الَّذِي يَلْبَسُهُ.
Yajurru min ʻajal: he hastens in his walk and drags his loincloth out of haste. Al-Asābīy: the wraps, one of which is sibb. Al-ʻAnnās: the name of a garment or a man. Maʻa al-izār: meaning with his garment that he wears.
- 9.سُلَافَةً: الْخَمْرَ أَوْ أَوَّلَ مَا يَخْرُجُ مِنْهَا. مُسْلَحِبٍّ: طَوِيلٌ. رَثِيمُ الْأَنْفِ: فِيهِ ضَعْفٌ أَوْ دَقَّةٌ. مَرْبُوبٌ بِقَارٍ: مُصْلَحٌ بِالْقَارِ، وَالْقَارُ هُوَ الْقَطِرَانُ.
Sulāfah: wine or the first what comes out of it. Muslaḥibb: tall. Rathīm al-anf: having weakness or thinness in the nose. Marbūb biqār: mended with pitch, and al-qār is tar.
- 10.تَدُورُ عَلَيْهِمْ: تُقَدَّمُ لَهُمْ وَيَتَدَاوَلُونَهَا. الْقِدْرُ: إِنَاءُ الطَّبْخِ. السَّدِيفُ: شَحْمُ الْكَاهِلِ وَالظَّهْرِ. الْكُومِ: الْعَظِيمَاتِ السَّنَامِ. وَارِي: مُضِيءٌ وَحَارٌّ، أَوْ مَا اشْتَدَّ حُرُّهُ مِنَ النَّارِ.
Tadūru ʻalayhim: it is offered to them and they pass it around. Al-Qidr: the cooking pot. Al-Sadīf: the fat of the hump and back. Al-Kūm: the ones with large humps. Wārī: bright and hot, or that whose heat from fire is intense.
- 11.التَّرْعِيبِ: الْخَمْرِ، سُمِّيَتْ بِذَلِكَ لِأَنَّهَا تُرَعِّبُ فِي الصَّدْرِ، أَيْ تُحْدِثُ فِيهِ صَوْتًا. الْعَذَارَى: جَمْعُ عَذْرَاءَ. يَطْلُعْنَ: يَظْهَرْنَ. الْعَذَارِي: جَمْعُ عَذَارٍ، وَهِيَ مَا حَوْلَ الْوَجْهِ مِنَ الشَّعْرِ.
Al-Tarʻīb: wine, so called because it makes a sound in the chest. Al-ʻAdhārā: plural of virgin. Yaṭluʻna: they appear. Al-ʻAdhārī: plural of a single lock of hair, which is what is around the face of the hair.
