وَقَدْAndعَلِمْنَاwe have knownأَنَّthatالْجَدِيدَthe newفِيinمَوْضِعِهِits placeدُونَother thanالْخَلْقِ؛the worn-out.

And we have known that the new is in its place other than the worn-out;

وَقَدْandجَعَلَhas madeاللَّهُGodعَزَّAlmightyوَجَلَّand Majesticلِكُلِّfor everyشَيْءٍthingقَدْراًa measure

and God Almighty has made for every thing a measure

وَبَوَّأَand assignedلَهُfor itمَوْضِعاً،a place,

and assigned for it a place,

كَمَاjust asجَعَلَHe madeلِكُلِّfor everyدَهْرٍeraرِجَالاً،men,

just as He made for every era men,

وَلِكُلِّand for everyمَقَامٍstationمَقَالاً؛a statement;

and for every station a statement;

وَقَدْandأَحْيَاHe has given lifeبِالسَّمّ،by poison,

and He has given life by poison,

وَأَمَاتَand caused deathبِالْغِذَاءِ،by food,

and caused death by food,

وَأَغَصَّand chokedبِالْمَاءِ،with water,

and choked with water,

وَقَتَلَand killedبِالدَّوَاءِ.with medicine.

and killed with medicine.

فَتَرْقِيعُPatchingالثَّوْبِthe garmentيَجْمَعُ،combines,

Patching the garment combines,

مَعَalong withالْإِصْلَاحِrepair,التَّوَاضُعَ،humility,

along with repair, humility,

وَخِلَافُand the opposite ofذَلِكَthatيَجْمَعُ،combines,

and the opposite of that combines,

مَعَalong withالْإِسْرَافِ،extravagance,التَّكَبُّرَ.arrogance.

along with extravagance, arrogance.

وَقَدْAndزَعَمُواthey claimedأَنَّthatقِلَّةَfewness ofالْعِيَالِdependentsأَحَدُis one ofالْيَسَارَيْنِ،the two easeful states,

And they claimed that fewness of dependents is one of the two easeful states,

وَقَدْandجَبَرَsetالْأَحْنَفُAl-Ahnafيَدَthe hand ofعَنْزٍ،a goat,

and Al-Ahnaf set the hand of a goat,

وَأَمَرَand orderedبِذَلِكَwith thatالنُّعْمَانُ.An-Nu'man.

and An-Nu'man ordered with that.

وَقَالَAnd saidعُمَرُ:Umar:مَنْWhoeverأَكَلَeatsبَيْضَةًan eggفَقَدْthen indeedأَكَلَhas eatenدَاجَةً،a chicken,

And Umar said: Whoever eats an egg then indeed has eaten a chicken,

وَقَالَand saidرَجُلٌa manلِبَعْضِto some ofالسَّادَةِ:the masters:أُهْدِيَIt is giftedإِلَيْكَto youدَاجَةٌ،a chicken,

and a man said to some of the masters: A chicken is gifted to you,

قَالَ:he said:إِنْIfكَانَit isلَاnotبُدَّavoidableفَاجْعَلْهَاthen make itبَيَّاضَةً.a layer of eggs.

he said: If it must be, then make it an egg-layer.

وَعَدَّAnd Abu Ad-Darda countedأَبُوAbuالدَّرْدَاءِ1Ad-Dardaالْعِرَاقَ2Iraqجَزَرَslaughtering ofالْبَهِيمَةِ3the beast..

And Abu Ad-Darda counted Iraq as the slaughtering of the beast.

وَعَتَمْتُمُونِيAnd you blamed meحِينَwhenقُلْتُ:I said:«لَا"Let notيَغْتَرَّنَّbe deceivedأَحَدٌanyoneبِطُولِby the length ofعُمْرِهِ،his life,

And you blamed me when I said: "Let not anyone be deceived by the length of his life,

وَتَقَوُّسِand the bowing ofظَهْرِهِ،his back,وَرِقَّةِand the thinness ofعَظْمِهِ،his bone,وَوَهْنِ4and the feebleness ofقُوَّتِهِ،his strength,

and the bowing of his back, and the thinness of his bone, and the feebleness of his strength,

أَنْthatيَرَىhe seesأُكْرُومَتَهُ،his nobility,

that he sees his nobility,

وَلَاand norيُخْرِجُهُdoes it lead himذَلِكَthatإِلَىtoإِخْرَاجِremovingمَالِهِhis wealthمِنْfromيَدَيْهِ،his hands,

and nor does that lead him to removing his wealth from his hands,

وَتَحْوِيلِهِand transferring itإِلَىtoمِلْكِownership ofغَيْرِهِ،someone else,

and transferring it to ownership of someone else,

وَإِلَىand toتَحْكِيمِempoweringالسَّرَفِextravaganceفِيهِ،over it,

and to empowering extravagance over it,

وَتَسْلِيطِand subjecting it toالشَّهَوَاتِdesiresعَلَيْهِ،over him,

and subjecting it to desires over him,

فَلَعَلَّهُfor perhaps heأَنْthatيَكُونَwill beمُعَمَّراً،granted a long life,

for perhaps he will be granted a long life,

وَهُوَwhile heلَاdoes notيَدْرِي،know,

while he does not know,

وَمَمْدُوداًand extendedلَهُfor himفِيinالسِّنِّageوَهُوَwhile heلَاdoes notيَشْعُرُ؛perceive;

and extended for him in age while he does not perceive;

وَلَعَلَّهُand perhaps heأَنْthatيُرْزَقَwill be provided withالْوَلَدَa childعَلَىuponالْيَأْسِ،despair,

and perhaps he will be provided with a child upon despair,

أَوْorيَحْدُثَthere occursعَلَيْهِto himبَعْضُsomeمُخَبَّآتِhidden matters ofالدُّهُورِ،ages,

or there occurs to him some hidden matters of ages,

مِمَّاfrom whatلَاdoes notيَخْطُرُcrossعَلَىuponالْبَالِ،the mind,

from what does not cross upon the mind,

وَلَاand norتُدْرِكُهُcomprehend itالْعُقُولُ،the intellects,

and nor comprehend it the intellects,

فَيَسْتَرِدَّهُso he reclaims itمِمَّنْfrom the one whoلَاdoes notيَرُدُّهُ،return it to him,

so he reclaims it from the one who does not return it to him,

وَيُظْهِرَand displaysالشَّكْوَىthe complaintإِلَىtoمَنْthe one whoلَاdoes notيَرْحَمُهُ،have mercy on him,

and displays the complaint to the one who does not have mercy on him,

أَضْعَفَat the weakestمَاwhatكَانَhe wasعَنِregardingالطَّلَبِseeking

at the weakest what he was regarding seeking

وَأَقْبَحَand at the ugliestمَاwhatيَكُونُisبِهِwith itالْكَسْبُ»earning...

and at the ugliest what earning is with him.

فَعَبْتُمُونِيSo you blamed meبِذَلِكَ،for that,

So you blamed me for that,

وَقَدْandقَالَsaidعَمْرُوAmrبْنُson ofالْعَاصِ:Al-As:«اعْمَلْ"Workلِدُنْيَاكَfor your worldly lifeعَمَلَlike the work ofمَنْone whoيَعِيشُlivesأَبَداً،forever,

and Amr son of Al-As said: "Work for your worldly life like the work of one who lives forever,

وَاعْمَلْand workلِآخِرَتِكَfor your Hereafterعَمَلَlike the work ofمَنْone whoيَمُوتُdiesغَداً»5tomorrow"..

and work for your Hereafter like the work of one who dies tomorrow".

وَعَبْتُمُونِيAnd you blamed meحِينَwhenزَعَمْتُI claimedأَنَّthatالتَّبْذِيرَsquanderingإِلَىis towardsمَالِthe wealth ofالْقِمَارِ،gambling,

And you blamed me when I claimed that squandering is towards the wealth of gambling,

وَمَالِand the wealth ofالْمِيرَاثِ،inheritance,

and the wealth of inheritance,
