حَدِيثُStory/Hadithسَرِيِّof Sariبْنِson ofمُكْرَمٍMukram

Story of Sari ibn Mukram

وَزَعَمَAnd claimedسَرِيُّSariبْنُson ofمُكْرَمٍMukramوَهُوَand heابْنُsonأَخِيof brotherمُوسَىMusaبْنِson ofجَنَاحٍJanah

Sari ibn Mukram, who is the son of Musa ibn Janah's brother, claimed:

قَالَ:He said:

He said:

كَانَwasمُوسَىMusaيَأْمُرُنَاused to order usأَلَّاthat notنَأْكُلَwe eatمَاwhatدَامَlastedأَحَدٌanyoneمِنَّاof usمَشْغُولًاbusyبِشُرْبِwith drinkingالْمَاءِthe waterوَطَلَبِهِand seeking it

Musa used to order us not to eat while any of us was busy drinking water and seeking it.

فَلَمَّاAnd whenرَآنَاhe saw usلَاnotنُطَاوِعُهُwe obey himدَعَاhe calledلَيْلَةًone nightبِالْمَاءِfor water

And when he saw that we would not obey him, he called for water one night.

ثُمَّThenخَطَّhe drewبِإِصْبَعِهِwith his fingerخَطًّاa lineفِيinأَرُزَّةٍa riceكَانَتْthat wasبَيْنَamongأَيْدِينَاour hands

Then he drew a line with his finger in some rice that was before us.

فَقَالَ:And he said:

And he said:

هَذَاthisنَصِيبِيis my shareلَاnotتَعْرِضُواyou approachلَهُto it

This is my share; do not approach it.

حَتَّىuntilانْتَفَعَhe benefitedبِشُرْبِby drinkingالْمَاءِthe water

until he had enjoyed drinking the water.

وَأَحَادِيثُهُAnd his narrationsفِيinصَدْرِthe beginningالْكِتَابِof the bookوَهَذَاand thisمِنْهَاis from them

And his narrations appear at the beginning of the book, and this is one of them.

وَقَالَAnd saidالْمُكِيُّal-Makkiلِبَعْضِto someمَنْof those whoكَانَwasيَتَعَشَّىdiningوَيُفْطِرُand breaking his fastعِنْدَat the place ofالْبَاسِيَانِيِّal-Basyani

And al-Makki said to some of those who used to dine and break their fast at al-Basyani's place:

وَيْحَكُمْ!Woe to you!

Woe to you!

كَيْفَhowتَسِيغُونَyou find palatableطَعَامَهُhis foodوَأَنْتُمْwhile youتَسْمَعُونَهُhear himيَقُولُ:saying:

How can you find his food palatable while you hear him saying:

«إِنَّمَا"Onlyنُطْعِمُكُمْwe feed youلِوَجْهِfor the sakeاللَّهِof Godلَاnotنُرِيدُwe desireمِنْكُمْfrom youجَزَاءًrewardوَلَاnorشَكُورًا»thanks"

"We only feed you for the sake of God; we desire neither reward nor thanks."

ثُمَّThenتَرَوْنَهُyou see himلَاnotيَقْرَؤُهَاhe recites itإِلَّاexceptوَأَنْتُمْwhile youعَلَىatالْعَشَاءِdinnerوَلَاand notيَقْرَأُhe recitesغَيْرَother thanهَذِهِthisالْآيَةِ؟verse?

Then you see him reciting it only while you are at dinner, and he recites no other verse than this one?

أَنْتُمْYouوَاللَّهِby Godضِدُthe oppositeالَّذِيof the one whoقَالَ:said:

By God, you are the opposite of the one who said:

أَلْبَانُThe milkإِبِلِof camelsتَعَلَّةَof Ta'allaبْنِson ofمَسَاوِرَMasawirمَاwhatدَامَas long asيَمْلِكُهَاhe owns themعَلَيَّupon meحَرَامٌforbidden

The milk of the camels of Ta'alla ibn Masawir is forbidden to me as long as he owns them.

وَطَعَامُAnd the foodعِمْرَانَof Imranبْنِson ofأَوْفَىAwfaمِثْلُهُlike itمَاwhatدَامَas long asيَسْلُكُit passesفِيinالْبُطُونِthe belliesطَعَامٌfood

And the food of Imran ibn Awfa is like it, as long as food passes through the bellies.

إِنَّIndeedالَّذِينَthose whoيَسُوغُgoes down easilyفِيinأَعْنَاقِهِمْtheir necksزَادٌprovisionsيَمُنُّhe bestows favorعَلَيْهِمْupon themلِلئَامِare the mean/ignoble

Indeed, those for whom provisions go down easily when he bestows favor upon them are the ignoble.

He said:

فَمَتَىAnd whenتَعْجَبُyou wonderفَأَعْجِبْthen wonderمِنْatخَمْسِينَfiftyرَجُلًاmenمِنَfromالْعَرَبِthe Arabsفِيهِمْamong themأَبُوAbuرَافِعٍRafi'الْكِلَابِيُّal-Kilabiوَهُوَand heشَاعِرٌa poetنَدِيٌّ1generous/eloquent

He said: Whenever you wonder, then wonder at fifty Arab men, among them Abu Rafi' al-Kilabi, who is a generous, eloquent poet, [footnote 1].

يُفْطِرُونَthey break their fastعِنْدَat the place ofأَبِيAbuعُثْمَانَUthmanالْأَعْوَرِal-A'war

They break their fast at the place of Abu Uthman al-A'war.

فَإِفْطَارِيSo breaking my fastمِنْwithطَعَامِfoodنَصْرَانِيٍّof a Christianأَشَدُّmore severeمِنْthanإِفْطَارِيbreaking my fastمِنْwithطَعَامِfoodمُسْلِمٍof a Muslimيَقْرَأُwho recitesالْقُرْآنَthe Quranوَيَقُولُand saysالْحَقَّthe truth

So my breaking my fast with the food of a Christian is more severe (i.e., more distasteful) than my breaking my fast with the food of a Muslim who recites the Quran and speaks the truth.

قَالَ:He said:

He said:

كُنْتُI wasمَعَwithأَبِيmy fatherوَمَعَنَاand with usشَيْخٌan old manمِنْfromمَوَالِيthe freed slavesالْحَيِّof the tribe

So we passed by the river of al-Ubulla while we were tired, and we sat by it.
