مَاتَhe diedفِيهِin it«زَوِّجُونِيmarry me،,فَإِنِّيfor IأَكْرَهُhateأَنْthatأَلْقَىI meetاللهَAllahعَزْبًاunmarried»1
He died in it: 'Marry me, for I hate to meet Allah unmarried.' (1)
وَandالْعَرَبُthe Arabsتَقُولُsay::«مَنْwhoeverغَلَىboilsدِمَاغُهُhis brainفِيinالصَّيْفِsummerغَلَتْboilsقِدْرُهُhis potفِيinالشِّتَاءِwinter»..
And the Arabs say: 'Whoever's brain boils in summer, his pot boils in winter.'
قَالَsaidمِكْرَزٌ2Mikraz::«الْعَجْزُinabilityفِرَاشٌa bedوَطِيءٌsoft،,لَاnotيَسْتَوْطِئُهُmakes it comfortableإِلَّاexceptالْفَشِلُthe cowardlyالدَّثُورُ3the miserable»..
Mikraz (2) said: 'Inability is a soft bed, none makes it comfortable except the cowardly miserable (3).'
وَقَالَand saidعَبْدُservantاللهِof Allahابْنُson ofوَهْبٍ4Wahb::«حُبُّloveالْهَوَيْنَاof easeيُكْسِبُearnsالنَّصَبَ5fatigue»..
And Abdullah ibn Wahb (4) said: 'Love of ease earns fatigue (5).'
وَقَالَand saidعُمَرُUmarابْنُson ofالْخَطَّابِal-Khattabرَضِيَmay be pleasedاللهُAllahعَنْهُwith him::«إِيَّاكُمْbewareوَofالرَّاحَةَrest،,فَإِنَّهَاfor itعُقْلَةٌ6a shackle»..
And Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, said: 'Beware of rest, for it is a shackle (6).'
وَقَالَand he said::«لَوْifأَنَّthatالصَّبْرَpatienceوَandالشُّكْرَgratitudeبَعِيرَانِtwo camels،,مَاnotبَالَيْتُI would careأَيَّهُمَاwhich of themأَرْكَبُI ride»..
And he said: 'If patience and gratitude were two camels, I would not care which one I ride.'
وَقَالَand he said::«تَمَعْدَدُواbe like Ma'adوَandاخْشَوْشِنُوا7be rough»،,وَandاقْطَعُواcutالرُّكَبَthe saddles،,وَandارْكَبُواrideالْخَيْلَhorsesنَزْوًا8leaping»..
And he said: 'Be like Ma'ad and be rough (7), and cut the saddles, and ride horses leaping (8).'
وَقَالَand he saidلِعَمْرِوto Amrابْنِson ofمَعْدِيMa'diكَرِبٍ9Karib،,حِينَwhenشَكَاhe complainedإِلَيْهِto himالْحُقَاءَ10the back pain::«كَذَبَتْliedعَلَيْكَupon youالظَّهَائِرُ11the noons»،,وَقَالَand he said::«احْتَفُواgo barefoot،,فَانْكُمْfor youلَاdo notتَدْرُونَknowمَتَىwhenتَكُونُwill beالْجَفْلَةُ12the flight»..
And he said to Amr ibn Ma'di Karib (9), when he complained to him of back pain (10): 'The noons lied upon you (11),' and he said: 'Go barefoot, for you do not know when the flight (12) will be.'
وَقَالَand he said::«إِنْifيَكُنْbeالشُّغْلُworkمَجْهَدَةًa hardship،,فَإِنَّthen indeedالْفَرَاغَleisureمَفْسَدَةٌa corruption»..
And he said: 'If work is a hardship, then leisure is a corruption.'
وَقَالَand he said..

- 1.الْحَدِيثُ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا أَنَّهُ قَالَ: «إِذَا مَاتَ الْإِنْسَانُ انْقَطَعَ عَمَلُهُ إِلَّا مِنْ ثَلَاثٍ: صَدَقَةٍ جَارِيَةٍ، أَوْ عِلْمٍ يُنْتَفَعُ بِهِ، أَوْ وَلَدٍ صَالِحٍ يَدْعُو لَهُ».
The hadith from Abdullah ibn Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, that he said: 'When a person dies, his deeds cease except from three: ongoing charity, beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for him.'
- 2.مِكْرَزُ بْنُ حَفْصٍ الْخُزَاعِيُّ، صَحَابِيٌّ جَلِيلٌ.
Mikraz ibn Hafs al-Khuza'i, a noble companion.
- 3.الدَّثُورُ: الْحَقِيرُ الذَّلِيلُ.
Ad-Dathur: the contemptible and humiliated.
- 4.عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ وَهْبٍ: قَاضِي مِصْرَ، وَهُوَ مِنْ كِبَارِ التَّابِعِينَ.
Abdullah ibn Wahb: judge of Egypt, and he was among the major Tabi'in.
- 5.النَّصَبُ: التَّعَبُ وَالْمَشَقَّةُ.
An-Nasab: fatigue and hardship.
- 6.الْعُقْلَةُ: مَا يُعْقَلُ بِهِ الْبَعِيرُ أَيْ يُشَدُّ بِهِ، ضَرَبَهَا مَثَلًا لِأَنَّ الرَّاحَةَ تَقُودُ إِلَى الذُّلِّ وَالتَّقْصِيرِ.
Al-Uqlah: what a camel is hobbled with, i.e., tied with; he made it an example because rest leads to humiliation and shortcomings.
- 7.تَمَعْدَدُوا: أَيْ كُونُوا عَلَى شَاكِلَةِ مَعَدٍّ فِي الْخُشُونَةِ وَالصَّبْرِ، وَاخْشَوْشِنُوا: أَيْ تَقَلَّلُوا مِنَ التَّنَعُّمِ وَتَعَوَّدُوا الْخُشُونَةَ.
Tama'dadu: i.e., be like the character of Ma'ad in roughness and patience, and ikhshawshinu: i.e., reduce luxury and accustom yourselves to roughness.
- 8.نَزْوًا: أَيْ وُثُوبًا وَسُرْعَةً.
Nazwan: i.e., leaping and speed.
- 9.عَمْرُو بْنُ مَعْدِي كَرِبَ: صَحَابِيٌّ مَشْهُورٌ بِالشَّجَاعَةِ وَالْفُرُوسِيَّةِ.
Amr ibn Ma'di Karib: a companion famous for bravery and horsemanship.
- 10.الْحُقَاءُ: وَجَعُ الْخَاصِرَةِ.
Al-Huqa': pain in the lower back.
- 11.كَذَبَتْ عَلَيْكَ الظَّهَائِرُ: أَيْ إِنَّكَ أَكْذَبْتَ نَفْسَكَ بِالنَّوْمِ فِي الظَّهِيرَةِ، وَالظَّهَائِرُ جَمْعُ ظَهِيرَةٍ وَهِيَ شِدَّةُ الْحَرِّ.
Kadhabat 'alayka az-zaha'ir: i.e., you have belied yourself by sleeping in the midday heat; az-zaha'ir is plural of zahira, which is the intensity of heat.
- 12.الْجَفْلَةُ: الْفَزَعَةُ وَالْهَرَبُ مِنَ الْعَدُوِّ.
Al-Jaflah: the alarm and flight from the enemy.
