وَكَانَتْAnd there wasلَهُfor himحَلْقَةٌa circleيَقْعُدُin which satفِيهَاthereinأَصْحَابُcompanions ofالْعَيْنِthe eyeوَالْبُخَلَاءِand the misersالَّذِينَwhoيَتَذَاكَرُونَused to discussالْإِصْلَاحَreform

And he had a circle in which sat the shrewd and the misers who used to discuss reform.

فَبَلَغَهُمْAnd it reached themأَنَّthatأَبَاAbuسَعِيدٍSa'idيَأْتِيcomesالْخُرَيْبَةَal-Khuraibaفِيinكُلِّeveryيَوْمٍdayلِيَقْتَضِيَto collectرَجُلًاa manهُنَاكَthereدَرَاهِمَdirhamsفَضَلَتْthat had remainedعَلَيْهِagainst him

And it reached them that Abu Sa'id came to al-Khuraiba every day to collect from a man there dirhams that were due to him, and they said...

وَقَالُواAnd they said

And they said:

هَذَاThisخَطَأٌis a mistakeعَظِيمٌgreatوَتَضْيِيعٌand a wasteكَثِيرٌmuch

"This is a great mistake and a great waste.

وَإِنَّمَاAnd onlyالْحَزْمُprudenceأَنْis toيَتَشَدَّدَbe strictفِيinغَيْرِother thanتَضْيِيعٍwaste

Prudence is to be strict without waste.

وَصَاحِبُنَاAnd our companionهَذَاthisقَدْindeedرَجَعَhas broughtعَلَىuponنَفْسِهِhimselfبِضُرُوبٍkindsمِنَofالْبَلَاءِaffliction

This companion of ours has brought upon himself kinds of affliction."

فَاجْتَمَعُواSo they gatheredعَلَيْهِaround himعَلَىinطَرِيقِthe way ofالتَّفَرُّغِleisureوَالِاسْتِفَادَةِand benefitingمِنْهُfrom him

So they gathered around him in a spirit of leisure and benefiting from him; they said:

قَالُواThey said

They said:

نَرَاكَWe see youتَصْنَعُdoingشَيْئًاa thingلَاnotنَعْرِفُهُwe know it

"We see you doing something we do not know,

وَالْخَطَأُAnd the mistakeمِنْكَfrom youأَعْظَمُis greaterمِنْهُthan itمِنْfromغَيْرِكَothers

and the mistake from you is greater than from others.

قَدْIndeedأَشْكَلَhas become obscureعَلَيْنَاto usهَذَاthisالْأَمْرُmatter

This matter has become obscure to us,

فَأَخْبِرْنَاso tell usعَنْهُabout it

so tell us about it,

فَقَدْfor indeedضَاقَتْhave become straitenedصُدُورُنَاour chestsبِهِwith it

for our chests are straitened with it.

خَبِّرْنَاTell usعَنْaboutمَضِيِّكَyour goingإِلَىtoالْخُرَيْبَةِal-Khuraibaلِتَقْتَضِيَto collectخَمْسَةَfiveدَرَاهِمَdirhams

Tell us about your going to al-Khuraiba to collect five dirhams.

فَوَاحِدَةٌFirstأَنَاweلَاnotنَأْمَنُare not safeعَلَيْكَfor youانْتِقَاضَthe breaking downبَدَنِكَof your body

First, we are not safe for you from the breaking down of your body,

وَقَدْand indeedخَلَاhas passedمِنْfromسِنِّكَyour age

and your age has passed its prime,

وَأَنْand thatتَعْتَلَّyou fall illفَتَدَعَand then leaveالْقَاضِيَthe judgeلِلْكَثِيرِfor the muchبِسَبَبِbecause ofالْقَلِيلِthe little

and that you fall ill and then leave the judge for the much because of the little.

وَثَانِيَةٌAnd secondأَنَّكَthat youتَنْصِبُundertakeهَذَاthisالنَّصَبَexertion

And second, that you undertake this exertion,

فَلَاso it isبُدَّinevitableلَكَfor youمِنْthatأَنْyouتَزْدَادَincreaseفِيinالْعَشَاءِthe dinnerإِنْifكُنْتَyou wereمِمَّنْamong those whoيَتَعَشَّىeat dinner

so inevitably you will increase in dinner if you are among those who eat dinner,

أَوْorتَتَعَشَّىyou will eat dinnerإِنْifكُنْتَyou wereمِمَّنْamong those whoلَاdo notيَتَعَشَّىeat dinner

or you will eat dinner if you are among those who do not eat dinner.

وَهَذَاAnd thisإِذَاwhenاجْتَمَعَcombinedكَانَwould beأَكْثَرَmoreمِنْthanخَمْسَةِfiveدَرَاهِمَdirhams

And this, when combined, would be more than five dirhams.

وَبَعْدُAnd furthermore

And furthermore,

فَإِنَّكَindeed youتَحْتَاجُneedأَنْtoتَشُقَّcut throughوَسَطَthe middle ofالسُّوقِthe market

you need to cut through the middle of the market,

وَعَلَيْكَand on youثِيَابُكَyour clothesوَالْحُمُولَةُand the loadsتَسْتَقْبِلُكَface you

with your clothes on and loads facing you,

فَمِنْso fromهَهُنَاhereنَتْرَةٌa pullوَمِنْand fromهَهُنَاhereجَذْبَةٌa tug

so from here a pull, and from here a tug,

فَإِذَاand thenالثَّوْبُthe garmentقَدْindeedأَوْدَىis ruined

and then the garment is ruined.

وَمِنْAnd fromذَلِكَthatأَنَّis thatنَعْلَكَyour sandalتَنْقُبُgets holesوَتَرِقُّand gets thinوَسَاقُand the legسَرَاوِيلِكَof your trousersتَتَّسِخُgets dirtyوَتَبْلَىand wears out

And from that, your sandal gets holes and thin, and the leg of your trousers gets dirty and wears out.

وَلَعَلَّكَAnd perhaps youأَنْwillتَعْثُرَstumbleفِيinنَعْلِكَyour sandal

And perhaps you will stumble in your sandal,

فَتَقُدَّهَاand tear itقَدًّاa tearingوَلَعَلَّكَand perhaps youتَهْرِتُهَاwill shred itهَرْتًاa shredding

and tear it completely, and perhaps shred it completely.

وَبَعْدُAnd furthermoreفَاقْتِضَاءُthe collectingالْقَلِيلِof the littleأَدَّىledبِكَyouإِلَىtoهَذَاthisوَمَاand notبَلَغْتَyou attainedمِنْهُfrom itشَيْئًاanything

And furthermore, the collecting of the little led you to this, and you did not attain anything from it.

وَأَنَّكَAnd you areأَفْضَلُbetter

And you are better.

إِلَّاButأَنَّاweنُحِبُّwould likeأَنَّكَthat youتُجَلِّيclarifyعَنِaboutالْأَمْرِthe matterبِشَيْءٍwith somethingفَلَيْسَfor notكُلُّنَاall of usيَثِقُtrustsلَكَin youبِالصَّوَابِwith the rightnessفِيinكُلِّeverythingشَيْءٍthing

But we would like you to clarify the matter with something, for not all of us trust you with the rightness in everything."

قَالَHe saidأَبُوAbuسَعِيدٍSa'id

Abu Sa'id said:

أَمَّاAs forمَاwhatذَكَرْتُمْyou mentionedمِنْofانْتِقَاضِthe breaking downالْبَدَنِof the body

"As for what you mentioned about the breaking down of the body,

فَإِنَّthen indeedالَّذِيthat whichأَخَافُI fearعَلَىforبَدَنِيmy bodyمِنَfromالدَّعَةِeaseوَمِنْand fromقِلَّةِlack ofالْحَرَكَةِmovementأَكْثَرُis more

then indeed what I fear for my body from ease and lack of movement is more.

وَمَاAnd notرَأَيْتُI sawأَصَحَّhealthierأَبْدَانًاbodiesمِنَthanالْحَمَّالِينَthe porters

And I have not seen healthier bodies than those of the porters.
