[[حَدِيثُHadithابْنِof IbnجِهَانَةَJihana]]

[Hadith of Ibn Jihana]

قَالَsaidابْنُIbnجِهَانَةَJihanaالثَّقَفِيَّةِal-Thaqafiyya::

Ibn Jihana al-Thaqafiyya said:

عَجِبْتُI am surprisedمِمَّنْat one whoيَمْنَعُpreventsالنَّبِيذَthe nabidhطَالِبَهُits seeker،,

I am surprised at one who withholds nabidh from its seeker.

لِأَنَّbecauseالنَّبِيذَnabidhإِنَّمَاonlyيُطْلَبُis soughtلِيَوْمِfor a dayفَصْدٍof bloodletting..

For nabidh is only sought for a day of phlebotomy.

أَوْorيَوْمِdayحِجَامَةٍof cupping،,

Or a day of cupping.

أَوْorيَوْمِdayزِيَارَةِof visitingزَائِرٍa visitor،,

Or a day of visiting a visitor.

أَوْorيَوْمِdayأَكْلِof eatingسَمَكٍfishطَرِيٍّfresh،,

Or a day of eating fresh fish.

أَوْorيَوْمِdayشُرْبَةِof drinkingدَوَاءٍmedicine..

Or a day of drinking medicine.

وَلَمْand notنَرَwe sawأَحَدًاanyoneطَلَبَهُsought itوَعِنْدَهُand with himنَبِيذٌnabidh،,

And we have not seen anyone seek it while he already had nabidh.

وَلَاnorلِيَدَّخِرَهُto store itوَيَحْتَكِرَهُand hoard it،,

Nor to store and hoard it.

وَلَاnorلِيَبِيعَهُto sell itوَيَعْقِدَand make a contractمِنْهُon it..

Nor to sell it and make a profit from it.

وَهُوَand itشَيْءٌa thingيَحْسُنُbecomes goodطَلَبُهُits seeking،,

It is a thing whose seeking is good.

وَتَحْسُنُand becomes goodهِبَتُهُits giving،,

And whose giving is good.

وَيَحْسُنُand becomes goodمَوْقِعُهُits place..

And whose place is good.

وَهُوَand itفِيinالْأَصْلِthe originكَثِيرٌabundantرَخِيصٌcheap..

And in origin it is abundant and cheap.

فَمَاthen whatوَجْهُfaceمَنْعِهِpreventing it؟?

Then what is the justification for preventing it?

مَاnotيَمْنَعُهُprevents itعِنْدِيin my viewإِلَّاexceptمَنْone whoلَاnoحَظَّshareلَهُfor himفِيinأَخْلَاقِthe mannersالْكِرَامِthe noble..

In my view, none prevents it except one who has no share in the noble manners.

وَعَلَىand althoughأَنِّيthat Iلَسْتُam notأُوجِلُ1I fearبِمَاfor whatأَهَبُI giveمِنْهُof itعَلَىonنَبِيذِيmy nabidhالنُّقْصَانَthe decrease،,

And although I do not fear that what I give of it will cause a decrease in my nabidh.

لِأَنِّيbecause IإِذَاwhenاحْتَجَبْتُI withheldعَنْfromنُدَمَائِيmy drinking companions،,

Because when I withhold from my companions.

بِقَدْرِby the amountمَاwhatأَخْرَجْتُI took outمِنْofنَبِيذِيmy nabidh،,

By the amount I took out of my nabidh.

رَجَعَreturnsإِلَيَّto meنَبِيذِيmy nabidhعَلَىuponحَالِهِits state،,

My nabidh returns to me as it was.

وَكُنْتُand I haveقَدْindeedتَحَمَّدْتُbeen praisedبِمَاfor whatلَاnotيَضُرُّنِيharms me..

And I have been praised for something that does not harm me.

فَمَنْso whoeverتَرَكَleavesالتَّحَمُّدَbeing praisedبِمَاfor whatلَاnotيَضُرُّهُharms himكَانَisمِنَofالتَّحَمُّدِbeing praisedبِمَاfor whatيَضُرُّهُharms himأَبْعَدَfarther..

So whoever leaves being praised for what does not harm him is farther from being praised for what harms him.

فَذَكَرَso mentionedابْنُIbnجِهَانَةَJihanaمَاwhatلَهُfor himمِنَofالْكَرَمِgenerosityبِهِبَةِin givingنَبِيذِهِhis nabidh،,

So Ibn Jihana mentioned his generosity in giving his nabidh.

وَلَمْand notيَذْكُرْhe mentionمَاwhatعَلَيْهِagainst himبِحَجْبِin withholdingنُدَمَائِهِhis companions..

And he did not mention what is against him in withholding from his companions.
