قُلْتُI said«"إِنِّيindeed IلَمْnotأَكُنْI wasأُكَلِّمُكَspeaking to youحَتَّىuntilوَلَّيْتُI turned awayبِهَاwith it»"

I said: "I was not speaking to you until I turned away with it."

قَالَHe said::«"كُنْتُI wasلِهٰذَاFor thisجِئْتُI came،,فَلَمَّاand whenصَارَتْbecameالْمِخَدَّةُthe pillowفِيinيَدِيmy handنَسِيتُI forgotمَاwhatجِئْتُI cameبِهِwith it..

He said: "I came for this, but when the pillow was in my hand I forgot what I came for."

وَالنَّبِيذُAnd the wine،,مَاnotعَلِمْتُI know،,وَاللهِby Allahيَذْهَبُgoesبِالْحِفْظِwith the memoryأَجْمَعَall..

And wine, as far as I know, by Allah, takes away all memory.

وَحَدَّثَنِيAnd narrated to meالْحِزَامِيُّal-Hizamiوَالْمَكِّيُّand al-Makkiوَالْعَرُوضِيُّand al-Arudi،,قَالُواthey said::سَمِعْنَاWe heardإِسْمَاعِيلَIsmailيَقُولُsaying::

And al-Hizami, al-Makki, and al-Arudi narrated to me, saying: We heard Ismail saying:

أَوَلَيْسَIs it notقَدْindeedأَجْمَعُواthey agreedعَلَىuponأَنَّthatالْبُخَلَاءَthe misersفِيinالْجُمْلَةِgeneralأَعْقَلُmore intelligentمِنَthanالْأَسْخِيَاءِthe generousفِيinالْجُمْلَةِgeneral..

Is it not agreed that misers in general are more intelligent than the generous in general?

هَاHereنَحْنُweأُولَاءِtheseعِنْدَكَwith youجَمَاعَةٌa groupفِينَاamong usمَنْone whoيَزْعُمُclaimsالنَّاسُpeopleأَنَّهُthat he isسَخِيٌّgenerous..

Here we are with you, a group among us includes one whom people claim is generous.

وَفِينَاAnd among usمَنْone whoيَزْعُمُclaimsالنَّاسُpeopleأَنَّهُthat he isبَخِيلٌmiser..

And among us is one whom people claim is a miser.

فَانْظُرْThen lookأَيُّwhichالْفَرِيقَيْنِof the two groupsأَعْقَلُis more intelligent؟?

Then see which of the two groups is more intelligent?

هَأَنَذَاHere I amوَسَهْلُand Sahlبْنُson ofهَارُونَHarun،,وَخَاقَانُand Khaqanبْنُson ofصَبِيحٍ1Sabih،,وَجَعْفَرُand Ja'farبْنُson ofسَعِيدٍSa'id،,وَالْحِزَامِيُّand al-Hizami،,وَالْعَرُوضِيُّand al-Arudi،,وَأَبُوand AbuيَعْقُوبَYa'qubالْخُرَيْمِيُّ2al-Khuraymi..

Here I am, and Sahl ibn Harun, Khaqan ibn Sabih⟦1⟧, Ja'far ibn Sa'id, al-Hizami, al-Arudi, and Abu Ya'qub al-Khuraymi⟦2⟧.

فَهَلْSo is thereمَعَكَwith youإِلَّاexceptأَبُوAbuإِسْحَاقَ3Ishaq؟?

Do you have anyone with you except Abu Ishaq⟦3⟧?

وَحَدَّثَنِيAnd narrated to meالْمَكِّيُّal-Makki،,قَالَhe said::قُلْتُI saidلِإِسْمَاعِيلَto Ismailمَرَّةًonce::

And al-Makki narrated to me, saying: I said to Ismail once:

«"لَمْnotأَرَI sawأَحَدًاanyoneقَطُّeverأَنْفَقَspentعَلَىonالنَّاسِpeopleمِنْfromمَالِهِhis wealth،,فَلَمَّاand whenاحْتَاجَhe neededإِلَيْهِمْthemآسَوْهُthey helped him»"

"I have never seen anyone spend on people from his wealth, and when he needed them, they helped him."

قَالَHe said::«"لَوْIfكَانَwasمَاwhatيَصْنَعُونَthey doلِلَّهِfor Allahرِضَىpleasing،,وَلِلْحَقِّand for the truthمُوَافِقًاagreeing،,لَمَاwould not haveجَمَعَgatheredاللهُAllahلَهُمُfor themالْغَدْرَtreacheryوَاللُّؤْمَand basenessمِنْfromأَقْطَارِregionsالْأَرْضِthe earth..

He said: "If what they do were pleasing to Allah and agreeing with the truth, Allah would not have gathered treachery and baseness for them from all regions of the earth."

وَلَوْAnd ifكَانَwasهٰذَاthisالْإِنْفَاقُspendingفِيinحَقِّهِits right،,لَمَاwould not haveابْتَلَاهُمُtested themاللهُAllahجَلَّGlorifiedذِكْرُهُHis mentionمِنْfromجَمِيعِallخَلْقِهِHis creation..

And if this spending were in its rightful place, Allah, Glorified be His mention, would not have tested them above all His creation.

حَدَّثَنِيNarrated to meتَمَّامُTammamبْنُson ofأَبِيAbiنُعَيْمٍNu'aym،,قَالَhe said::كَانَThere wasلَنَاfor usجَارٌa neighbor،,وَكَانَand he hadلَهُfor himعُرْسٌa wedding..

Tammam ibn Abi Nu'aym narrated to me, saying: We had a neighbor, and he had a wedding.

فَجَعَلَSo he madeطَعَامَهُhis foodكُلَّهُall of itفَالُوذَقَ5faludhaj،,فَقِيلَso it was saidلَهُto him::إِنَّIndeedالْمُؤُونَةَthe expenseتَعْظُمُbecomes great..

He made all his food faludhaj⟦5⟧, and it was said to him: Indeed the expense is great.

قَالَHe said::«"احْتَمِلْBearثِقْلَthe burdenالْغُرْمِof the costبِتَعْجِيلِby hasteningالرَّاحَةِcomfort..

He said: "Bear the burden of cost by hastening comfort."

لَعَنَMay curseاللهُAllahالنِّسَاءَwomen،,مَاwhatأَشَكَّmore doubtfulأَنَّthatمَنْwhoeverأَطَاعَهُنَّobeys themشَرٌّis worseمِنْهُنَّthan them..

May Allah curse women; how more certain it is that whoever obeys them is worse than them.

وَحَدِيثٌAnd a narrationسَمِعْنَاهُwe heard itعَلَىthroughoutوَجْهِthe faceالدَّهْرِof time..

And a narration we heard throughout the ages.

زَعَمُواThey claimedأَنَّthatرَجُلًاa manقَدْindeedبَلَغَreachedفِيinالْبُخْلِmiserliness

They claimed that a man had reached in miserliness...
