الأَرْضُthe earthوَقَالُوا:and they said:
The earth, and they said:
كَانَwasلَوْنُهُhis colorأُدْمَةَthe complexion ofلَوْنِthe color ofالأَرْضِ،the earth,
His color was the complexion of the color of the earth.
وَأَنَّand thatالمَسِيحَthe Messiahإِنَّمَاonlyسُمِّيَwas namedالمَسِيحَthe Messiahلِأَنَّهُbecause he مُسِحَwas anointedبِدُهْنِwith the oil ofالبَرَكَةِ.blessing.
And that the Messiah was only named the Messiah because he was anointed with the oil of blessing.
وَقَالَand saidبَعْضُهُمْ:some of them:
And some of them said:
لِأَنَّهُbecause heكَانَwasلَاnotيُقِيمُstayingفِيinالبَلَدِthe cityالوَاحِدِ،the one,
Because he did not stay in one city,
وَكَانَand wasكَأَنَّهُas if heمَاسِحٌa wiperيَمْسَحُwipingالأَرْضَ.the earth.
and he was as if he were a wiper wiping the earth.
[أَعَاجِيبُWonders ofابْنِson ofعَبْدِAbdالرَّحْمَنِ]al-Rahman]
Wonders of Ibn Abd al-Rahman
ثُمَّthenرَجَعَreturnedالحَدِيثُthe talkإِلَىtoأَعَاجِيبِthe wonders ofأَبِيAbuعَبْدِAbdالرَّحْمَنِ:al-Rahman:
Then the talk returned to the wonders of Abu Abd al-Rahman:
وَكَانَand wasأَبُوAbuعَبْدِAbdالرَّحْمَنِ1al-Rahmanيُعْجَبُadmiringبِالرُّؤُوسِheadsوَيَحْمَدُهَاand praising themوَيَصِفُهَا.and describing them.
And Abu Abd al-Rahman used to admire heads, praise them, and describe them.
وَكَانَand wasلَاnotيَأْكُلُeatingاللَّحْمَmeatإِلَّاexceptيَوْمَday ofأَضْحَى،Adha,
And he would not eat meat except on the day of Adha,
أَوْorمِنْfromبَقِيَّةِthe remainder ofأُضْحِيَتِهِ2his sacrifice،,
or from the remainder of his sacrifice,
أَوْorيَكُونَbeفِيinعُرْسٍa weddingأَوْorدَعْوَةٍan invitationأَوْorسُفْرَةٍ.a meal.
or unless he was at a wedding, an invitation, or a meal.
وَكَانَand wasسَمَّىhe namedالرَّأْسَthe head«عُرْسًا»"a wedding"لِمَاbecause of whatيَجْتَمِعُgathersفِيهِin itمِنَofالأَلْوَانِcolorsالطَّيِّبَةِ.pleasant.
And he used to call the head "a wedding" because of the pleasant colors that gather in it.
وَكَانَand wasيُسَمِّيهِhe called itمَرَّةًsometimes«الْجَامِعَ»"the comprehensive"،,وَمَرَّةًand sometimes«الْكَامِلَ»"the perfect".
And he would call it sometimes "the comprehensive" and sometimes "the perfect".
وَكَانَand wasيَقُولُ:saying:
And he used to say:
«الرَّأْسُthe headشَيْءٌa thingوَاحِدٌ،one,
"The head is one thing,
وَهُوَand it isذُوpossessor ofأَلْوَانٍcolorsعَجِيبَةٍwondrousوَطُعُومٍand tastesمُخْتَلِفَةٍ3various..
and it has wondrous colors and various tastes.
وَكُلُّand everyقِدْرٍpotوَكُلُّand everyشِوَاءٍroastفَإِنَّمَاthen onlyهُوَit isشَيْءٌa thingوَاحِدٌ؛one;
And every pot and every roast is only one thing;
وَفِيand inالرَّأْسِthe headالدِّمَاغُ،the brain,
and in the head is the brain,
فَطَعْمُso the taste ofالدِّمَاغِthe brainعَلَىonحِدَةٍ؛its own;
so the taste of the brain is on its own;
وَفِيهِand in itالعَيْنَانِthe two eyesوَطَعْمُهُمَاand their tasteشَيْءٌa thingعَلَىonحِدَةٍ؛its own;
and in it are the two eyes, and their taste is a thing on its own;
وَفِيهِand in itالشَّحْمَةُthe fatالَّتِيwhichبَيْنَbetweenأَصْلِthe root ofالأُذُنِthe earوَمُؤَخَّرِand the back ofالعَيْنِthe eyeوَطَعْمُهَاand its tasteعَلَىonحِدَةٍ،its own,
and in it is the fat that is between the root of the ear and the back of the eye, and its taste is on its own;
عَلَىonأَنَّthatهَذِهِthisالشَّحْمَةَfatخَاصَّةًspecificallyأَطْيَبُbetterمِنَthanالمُخِّthe marrowوَأَنْعَمُand softerمِنَthanالزُّبْدِbutterوَأَدْسَمُand richerمِنَthanالسُّلَاءِ4the tail fat؛;
although this fat specifically is better than marrow, softer than butter, and richer than tail fat;
وَفِيand inالرَّأْسِthe headاللِّسَانُthe tongueوَطَعْمُهُand its tasteشَيْءٌa thingعَلَىonحِدَةٍ؛its own;
and in the head is the tongue, and its taste is a thing on its own;
وَفِيهِand in itالخَيْشُومُ5the noseوَالغُضْرُوفُ6and the cartilageالَّذِيthat isفِيinالخَيْشُومِthe noseوَطَعْمُهُمَاand their tasteشَيْءٌa thingعَلَىonحِدَةٍ؛its own;
and in it is the nose and the cartilage that is in the nose, and their taste is a thing on its own;
وَفِيهِand in itلَحْمُthe meat ofالخَدَّيْنِthe two cheeksوَطَعْمُهُand its tasteشَيْءٌa thingعَلَىonحِدَةٍ»its own."
and in it is the meat of the two cheeks, and its taste is a thing on its own."
حَتَّىuntilيُقَسِّمَhe would divideأَسْقَاطَهُits partsالبَاقِيَةَ.remaining.
until he would divide its remaining parts.
وَيَقُولُ:and he says:
And he says:
«الرَّأْسُthe headسَيِّدُmaster ofالبَدَنِ،the body,
"The head is the master of the body,
وَفِيهِand in itالدِّمَاغُ،the brain,
and in it is the brain,
وَهُوَand it isمَعْدِنُthe mine ofالعَقْلِ،intellect,
and it is the mine of intellect,
وَمِنْهُand from itيَتَفَرَّقُspreads
and from it spreads

- 2.أَيْ مِنْ بَقِيَّةِ لَحْمِ أُضْحِيَتِهِ.
That is, from the remainder of the meat of his sacrifice.
- 3.مُخْتَلِفَةٌ: مُتَنَوِّعَةٌ.
Various: diverse.
- 4.السُّلَاءُ: شَحْمُ النَّخْلِ وَهُوَ أَيْضًا شَحْمُ الْعَجْبِ.
Al-sala': the fat of the palm of the hand, and it is also the fat of the tailbone.
- 5.الخَيْشُومُ: أَقْصَى الأَنْفِ وَمُنْتَهَاهُ.
Al-khayshum: the innermost part of the nose and its end.
- 6.الغُضْرُوفُ: مَا لَانَ مِنَ العَظْمِ.
Al-ghudhruf: what is soft of bone (cartilage).
