صَدْرًا1chest،,أَطْهَرَpurestالْفُتُورِof languorوَandالتَّشَاغُلِbusynessوَandالتَّنَقُّرِpeckingكَالشَّبْعَانِlike the fullالْمُمْتَلِئِ2filled..
Chest, purest of languor, busyness, and pecking like the full and filled.
وَandهُوَheفِيinذَلِكَthatغَيْرُnotرَافِعٍraisingيَدَهُhis handوَandلَاnotقَاطِعٍcuttingأَكْلَهُhis eating..
And he in that is not raising his hand nor cutting his eating.
إِنَّمَاonlyهُوَit isالنَّتْفُthe pluckingبَعْدَafterالنَّتْفِplucking،,وَandتَعْلِيقُsuspendingالْيَدِthe handفِيinخَلَلِgapsذَلِكَthat..
It is only plucking after plucking, and suspending the hand in the gaps of that.
فَلَاso notبُدَّescapeمِنْfromأَنْthatيَنْقَبِضَwithdrawبَعْضُهُمْsome of themوَandيَرْفَعَraiseيَدَهُhis hand،,رُبَّمَاperhapsشَمِلَincludedذَلِكَthatجَمَاعَتَهُمْtheir group..
So inevitably some of them withdraw and raise his hand; perhaps that includes their group.
فَإِذَاso whenعَلِمَhe knewأَنَّهُthat heقَدْindeedأَحْرَزَهُمْsecured themوَandاحْتَالَcontrivedلَهُمْfor them،,حَتَّىuntilيُقْلِعَهُمْhe makes them leaveمِنْfromمَوَاضِعِهِمْtheir placesمِنْfromحَوْلِaroundالْخِوَانِthe dining cloth،3,وَandيُعِيدَهُمْreturn themإِلَىtoمَوَاضِعِهِمْtheir placesمِنْfromمَجَالِسِهِمْtheir sessions،,ابْتَدَأَhe beganالْأَكْلَthe eating،,فَأَكَلَso he ateأَكْلَeatingالْجَائِعِof the hungryالْمُقْرُورِ4cold،,وَandقَالَhe said::
So when he knew that he had secured them and contrived for them, until he makes them leave their places around the dining cloth and return them to their places in their sessions, he began eating, and ate like a hungry cold person, and said:
«"إِنَّمَاonlyالْأَكْلُeatingتَارَاتٍtimesوَandالشُّرْبُdrinkingتَارَاتٍtimes»"..
"Eating is times and drinking is times."
وَandكَانَhe wasكَثِيرًاoftenمَاwhatيَقُولُhe saysلِأَصْحَابِهِto his companionsإِذَاwhenبَكَّرُواthey came earlyعَلَيْهِto him::لِمَwhyلَاnotنَشْرَبُwe drinkأَقْدَاحًاcupsعَلَىonالرِّيقِempty stomach؟?
And he often used to say to his companions when they came early to him: Why do we not drink cups on an empty stomach?
فَإِنَّهَاfor theyتَقْتُلُkillالدِّيدَانَthe worms،,وَandتَحْفِشُ5cleanلِأَنْفُسِنَاfor ourselvesقَلِيلًاa little،,فَإِنَّهَاfor theyتَأْتِيcomeعَلَىuponجَمِيعِallالْفُضُولِthe excesses،,وَandتُشَهِّيdesireالطَّعَامَfoodبَعْدَafterسَاعَةٍan hour..
For they kill the worms, and clean our selves a little; for they come upon all excesses, and make food desirable after an hour.
وَandسُكْرُهُits intoxicationأَطْيَبُpleasantمِنْthanسُكْرِ6intoxicationالْكَظَّةِ7of indigestion..
And its intoxication is more pleasant than the intoxication of indigestion.
وَandالشَّارِبُthe drinkerعَلَىonالْمَلَاءَةِfullnessبَلَاءٌ8affliction،,وَandهُوَheبَعْدَafterذَلِكَthatدَلِيلٌproofعَلَىonأَنَّكَthat youنَبِيذِيٌّwine drinkerخَالِصٌpure..
And the one who drinks on fullness is an affliction, and he after that is proof that you are a pure wine drinker.
وَandمَنْwhoeverلَمْnotيَشْرَبْdrinkعَلَىonالرِّيقِempty stomachفَهُوَthen he isنَكِسٌ9baseفِيinالْفُتُوَّةِchivalryوَandدَعِيٌّ10pretenderفِيinأَصْحَابِcompanionsالنَّبِيذِof wine..
And whoever does not drink on an empty stomach is base in chivalry and a pretender among wine companions.
وَandإِنَّمَاonlyيُخَافُis fearedعَلَىforكَبِدِهِhis liverمِنْfromسَوْرَةِferocityالشَّرَابِof drinkعَلَىonالرِّيقِempty stomach،,مِنْfromبَعْدِafterعَهْدِهِhis last contactبِاللَّحْمِwith meat..
And only is feared for his liver from the ferocity of drink on empty stomach, after his last contact with meat.
وَandهَذِهِthisالصَّبْحَةُ11morning drinkتَغْسِلُwashesعَنْكُمْfrom youالْأَوْضَارَ12the dirt،,وَandتَنْفِيrepelsالتُّخَمَindigestion،,وَandلَيْسَnot isدَوَاءُmedicineالْخُمَارِof hangoverإِلَّاexceptالشُّرْبُdrinkingبِالْكِبَارِin large quantities..
And this morning drink washes away the dirt from you, and repels indigestion, and there is no medicine for hangover except drinking in large quantities.

He says: 'chest', meaning: he became a chest.

- 7.الْكَظَّةُ: الْغَيْظُ.
Kazzah: anger.
- 8.الْبَلَاءُ: الِاخْتِبَارُ.
Bala': trial.
- 9.النَّكِسُ: الدُّونُ.
Nakis: inferior.
- 10.الدَّعِيُّ: الْمُتَنَسِّبُ إِلَى غَيْرِ أَبِيهِ.
Da'i: one claiming lineage to other than his father.
- 11.الصَّبْحَةُ: شُرْبُ الْغَدَاةِ.
Sabhah: morning drink.
- 12.الْأَوْضَارُ: الْأَوْسَاخُ.
Awdar: dirt.
