فَلَمَّاAnd whenحَضَرَcameوَقْتُtimeالْغَدَاءِof lunchصَوَّتَhe called outبِغُلَامِهِ1to his servantوَكَانَand he wasضَخْمًاlargeجَهِيرَ2strongالصَّوْتِof voice

And when the time of lunch came, he called out to his servant, who was large with a strong voice,

صَاحِبَpossessorتَقْعِيرٍof deep pronunciationوَتَفْخِيمٍand magnificationوَتَشْدِيقٍ3and opening wide of mouthوَهَمْزٍ4and hamzaوَجَزْمٍ5and jussive

possessor of deep pronunciation, magnification, opening wide of mouth, hamza, and jussive:

يَاOمُبَشِّرُMubashshirهَاتِbringمِنَfromالْخُبْزِthe breadتَمَامَthe full numberعَدَدِof countالرُّءُوسِof heads

O Mubashshir, bring from the bread the full number of heads.

قُلْتُI saidوَمَنْand whoفَرَضَimposedلَهُمْfor themهَذِهِthisالْفَرِيضَةَobligationوَمَنْand whoجَزَمَdecidedعَلَيْهِمْupon themهَذَاthisالْجَزْمُdecision

I said: And who imposed this obligation on them? And who decided this decision upon them?

أَرَأَيْتَHave you seenأَنْthatلَمْnotيَشْبَعْdoes not satisfyأَحَدُهُمْone of themرَغِيفَهُhis loafأَلَيْسَis it notلَاnoبُدَّescapeلَهُfor himمِنْfromأَنْthatيَعَوِّلَhe reliesعَلَىonرَغِيفِloafصَاحِبِهِof his companion

Have you considered that if one of them is not satisfied by his loaf, is it not inevitable that he relies on his companion's loaf?

أَوْorيَتَنَحَّىhe moves asideوَعَلَيْهِand upon himبَقِيَّةٌa remainderوَيُعَلِّقُand he hangsيَدَهُhis handمُنْتَظِرًاwaitingلِلْعَادَةِfor the custom

Or he moves aside with a remainder upon him, and he hangs his hand waiting for the custom.

فَقَدْthen indeedعَادَreturnedالْأَمْرُthe matterوَبَطَلَand became voidمَاwhatتَنَاظَرْنَاwe arguedفِيهِabout it

Then indeed the matter returned and what we argued about became void.

قَالَHe saidلَاnotأَعْلَمُI knowإِلَّاexceptتَرْكَabandoningالطَّعَامِfoodالْبَتَّةَentirelyأَهْوَنُeasierعَلَيْنَاfor usمِنْthanهَذِهِthisالْخُصُومَةِdispute

He said: I know no solution except abandoning food entirely; it is easier for us than this dispute.

قُلْتُI saidهَذَاthisمَاwhatلَاnotشَكَّdoubtفِيهِin itوَقَدْand indeedعَمِلْتَyou have actedعِنْدِيin my opinionبِالصَّوَابِwith correctness

I said: This is what there is no doubt in, and indeed you have acted correctly in my opinion,

وَأَخَذْتَand you have takenلِنَفْسِكَfor yourselfبِالثِّقَةِwith confidenceإِنْifوَفَيْتَyou fulfillبِهَذَاwith thisالْقَوْلِsaying

and you have taken for yourself with confidence, if you fulfill this saying.

وَكَانَAnd he used toكَثِيرًاoftenمَاwhatيَقُولُsayيَاOغُلَامُboyهَاتِbringشَيْئًاsomethingمِنْofقَلِيِّهِ6his fried meat

And he used to often say: O boy, bring something of his fried meat,

وَأَقِلَّand make lessمِنْهَاof itوَأَعِدْand prepareلَنَاfor usمَاءًwaterبَارِدًاcoldوَأَكْثِرْand make moreمِنْهُof it

and make less of it, and prepare for us cold water, and make more of it.

وَكَانَAnd he used toيَقُولُsayقَدْindeedتَغَيَّرَhas changedكُلُّeveryشَيْءٍthingمِنْofأَمْرِmatterالدُّنْيَاthe world

And he used to say: Indeed everything of the world's affairs has changed,

وَحَالَand has turnedعَنْfromأَمْرِهِits stateوَتَبَدَّلَand has transformedحَتَّىevenالْمُؤَاكَلَةِeating together

and has turned from its state and transformed, even eating together.

قَاتَلَMay God fightاللهُGodرِجَالًاmenكُنَّاwe used toنُؤَاكِلُهُمْeat with them

May God fight men we used to eat with,

مَاnotرَأَيْتُI sawقَصْعَةًa bowlقَطُّeverرُفِعَتْwas liftedمِنْfromبَيْنِamongأَيْدِيهِمْtheir handsإِلَّاexceptوَفِيهَاand in itفَضْلٌremnant

I never saw a bowl ever lifted from among their hands except that there was a remnant in it.

وَكَانُواAnd they used toيَعْلَمُونَknowأَنَّthatإِحْضَارَbringingالْجَدْيِthe goatإِنَّمَاonlyهُوَit isشَيْءٌa thingمِنْofآدَابِ7etiquettesالْمَوَائِدِof the tablesالرَّفِيعَةِrefined

And they used to know that bringing the goat is only a thing of the etiquettes of refined tables,

وَإِنَّمَاand onlyجُعِلَit was madeكَالْعَاقِبَةِlike the conclusionوَالْخَاتِمَةِand the sealوَكَالْعَلَامَةِand like the signلِلْيُسْرِof easeوَلِلْفَرَاغِand of completion

and it was only made like the conclusion and the seal, and like the sign of ease and completion,

وَأَنَّهُand that itلَمْnotيُحْضَرْwas broughtلِلتَّمْزِيقِfor tearing apartوَالتَّخْرِيبِand destruction

and that it was not brought for tearing apart and destruction.

وَأَنَّand thatأَهْلَهُits peopleلَوْifأَرَادُواthey wantedبِهِwith itالسُّوءَthe harmلَقَدَّمُوهُthey would have presented itقَبْلَbeforeكُلِّeveryشَيْءٍthingلِتَقَعَso that it fallsالْحِدَّةُthe sharpnessبِهِon it

And that its owners, if they wanted harm with it, they would have presented it before everything so that the sharpness would fall on it.

بَلْRatherمَاnotيَأْكُلُeatsمِنْهُof itإِذَاwhenجِيءَit was broughtبِهِwith itإِلَّاexceptالْعَابِثُthe one playingوَإِلَّاand exceptالَّذِيthe one whoلَوْifلَمْnotيَرَهُhe saw it

Rather, no one eats from it when it is brought except the one playing, and except the one who, if he did not see it, ...
