وَدَخَلَاand they entered
And they entered,
أَقَلَّlessيُمْنًاblessingوَأَخْبَثَand more maliciousأَصْلًاin originمِنْthanسَائِرِthe rest ofالْغَلَّاتِthe revenues
less blessed and more malicious in origin than other revenues.
فَأَنْتُمْfor youشَرٌّare worseعَلَيْنَاfor usمِنَthanالْهِنْدِthe Indiansوَالرُّومِand the Byzantinesوَمِنَand thanالتُّرْكِthe Turksوَالدَّيْلَمِand the Daylamites
You are worse for us than the Indians, the Byzantines, the Turks, and the Daylamites,
إِذْsinceكُنْتُمْyou wereأَحْضَرَmore promptأَذًىin harmوَأَدْوَمَand more enduringشَرًّاin evil
since you were more prompt in harm and more enduring in evil.
ثُمَّThenكَانَتْwasهَذِهِthisصِفَتُكُمْyour descriptionوَحِلْيَتُكُمْand your appearanceوَمُعَامَلَتُكُمْand your dealingفِيinشَيْءٍa thingلَاnotبُدَّescapeلَكُمْfor youمِنْهُfrom it
Then this was your description, appearance, and dealing in a thing you cannot avoid,
فَكَيْفَthen howكُنْتُمْwould you beلَوْifامْتُحِنْتُمْyou were testedبِمَاwith whatلَكُمْfor youعَنْهُfrom itمَنْدُوحَةٌan alternativeوَالْوُجُوهُand the waysلَكُمْfor youفِيهِin itمُعْرِضَةٌavailable
How would you be if you were tested with what you have an alternative to, and the ways are available to you?
وَأَنْتُمْand youفِيهِin itبِالْخِيَارِhave the choiceوَلَيْسَand there is notعَلَيْكُمْupon youطَرِيقٌa pathلِلِاضْطِرَارِto compulsion
And you have the choice in it, and there is no path of compulsion upon you.
وَهَذَاand thisمَعَwithقَوْلِكُمْyour saying
And this is despite your saying:
إِنَّthatنُزُولَthe descent intoدُورِhousesالْكِرَاءِof rentأَصْوَبُis more correctمِنْthanنُزُولِthe descent intoدُورِhousesالشِّرَاءِof purchase
That descending into rented houses is more correct than descending into purchased houses.
وَقُلْتُمْAnd you said
And you said:
لِأَنَّbecauseصَاحِبَthe ownerالشِّرَاءِof purchaseقَدْindeedأَغْلَقَhas closedرَهْنَهُhis pledgeوَأَشْرَطَand has boundنَفْسَهُhimselfوَصَارَand becameبِهَاby itمُمْتَحَنًاtestedوَبِثَمَنِهَاand by its priceمُرْتَهَنًاpledged
Because the owner of purchase has closed his pledge, bound himself, and become tested by it, and pledged by its price.
وَمَنِand whoeverاتَّخَذَtakesدَارًاa houseفَقَدْhas indeedأَقَامَestablishedكَفِيلًاa guarantorلَاnotيَخْفِرُbetraysوَزَعِيمًاand a leaderلَاnotيَغْرَمُpays
And whoever takes a house, he has established a guarantor that does not betray, and a leader that does not pay.
وَإِنْand ifغَابَhe is absentعَنْهَاfrom itحَنَّhe longsإِلَيْهَاto itوَإِنْand ifأَقَامَhe staysفِيهَاin itأَلْزَمَتْهُit imposes on himالْمُؤَنُthe expensesوَعَرَّضَتْهُand exposes himلِلْفِتَنِto temptations
If he is absent from it, he longs for it; and if he stays in it, it imposes expenses on him and exposes him to temptations:
إِنْifأَسَاءُواthey behave badlyجِوَارَهُhis neighborhoodوَأَنْكَرَand he dislikesمَكَانَهُhis placeوَبَعُدَand becomes distantمُصَلَّاهُhis prayer placeوَنَأَتْand becomes farعَنْهُfrom himسُوقُهُhis marketوَتَفَاوَتَتْand become variedحَوَائِجُهُhis needsوَرَأَىand he seesأَنَّهُthat heقَدْindeedأَخْطَأَerredفِيinاخْتِيَارِهَاhis choice of itعَلَىoverسِوَاهَاother than itوَأَنَّهُand that heلَمْnotيُوَفَّقْwas guidedلِرُشْدِهِto his right courseحِينَwhenآثَرَهَاhe preferred itعَلَىoverغَيْرِهَاother than it
If they behave badly in his neighborhood, he dislikes his place, his prayer place becomes distant, his market moves away, his needs become varied, and he sees that he erred in choosing it over others, and that he was not guided to the right course when he preferred it over others.
وَأَنَّand thatمَنْwhoeverكَانَisكَذَلِكَlike thatفَهُوَthen he isعَبْدُa slaveدَارِهِof his houseوَخَوَلُand a servantجَارِهِof his neighbor
And whoever is like that, then he is a slave of his house and a servant of his neighbor.
وَإِنَّAnd indeedصَاحِبَthe ownerالْكِرَاءِof rentالْخِيَارُthe choiceفِيinيَدِهِhis handوَالْأَمْرُand the matterإِلَيْهِto him
And indeed the renter has the choice in his hand and the matter is up to him.
فَكُلُّso everyدَارٍhouseهِيَit isلَهُfor himمُتَنَزَّهٌa place of recreationإِنْifشَاءَhe wishesوَمَتْجَرٌand a place of tradeإِنْifشَاءَhe wishesوَمَسْكَنٌand a residenceإِنْifشَاءَhe wishes
So every house is for him a place of recreation if he wishes, a place of trade if he wishes, and a residence if he wishes.
لَمْhe did notيَحْتَمِلْendureفِيهَاin itالْيَسِيرَthe littleمِنَofالذُّلِّhumiliationوَلَاnorالْقَلِيلَthe smallمِنَofالضَّيْمِoppression
He does not endure in it the little humiliation, nor the small oppression;
وَلَاnorيَعْرِفُdoes he knowالْهَوَانَdisgraceوَلَاnorيُسَامُis he subjected toالْخَسْفَoppressionوَلَاnorيَحْتَرِسُdoes he guardمِنَagainstالْحُسَّادِthe enviousوَلَاnorيُدَارِيdoes he appeaseالْمُتَعَلِّلِينَthe fault-finders
He does not know disgrace, nor is he subjected to oppression, nor does he guard against the envious, nor appease the fault-finders.
وَصَاحِبُAnd the ownerالشِّرَاءِof purchaseيُجَرِّعُis made to drinkالْمَرَارَbitternessوَيُسْقَىand is given to drinkبِكَأْسِfrom the cupالْغَيْظِof rageوَيُكَدُّand is exhaustedبِطَلَبِby seekingالْحَوَائِجِneedsوَيَحْتَمِلُand he enduresالذِّلَّةَhumiliationوَإِنْeven ifكَانَhe isذَاpossessor ofأَنَفَةٍpride
And the owner of purchase is made to drink bitterness, is given the cup of rage, is exhausted by seeking needs, and endures humiliation even if he is proud.
إِنْifعَفَاhe forgivesعَفَاhe forgivesعَلَىuponكَظْمٍsuppressed angerوَلَاand notيُوَجَّهُis attributedذَلِكَthatمِنْهُfrom himإِلَّاexceptإِلَىtoالْعَجْزِinabilityوَإِنْand ifرَامَhe seeksالْمُكَافَأَةَretaliation
If he forgives, he forgives with suppressed anger, and that is attributed only to inability; and if he seeks retaliation
