تَوْطِئَةٌIntroduction
Introduction
بِسْمِIn the name ofاللَّهِAllah,الرَّحْمَٰنِthe Most Gracious,الرَّحِيمِthe Most Merciful
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
تَوَلَّاكَMay Allah take charge of youاللَّهُAllahبِحِفْظِهِwith His protection,
May Allah take charge of you with His protection,
وَأَعَانَكَand help youعَلَىinشُكْرِهِHis gratitude,
and help you in His gratitude,
وَوَفَّقَكَand grant you successلِطَاعَتِهِin His obedience,
and grant you success in His obedience,
وَجَعَلَكَand make youمِنَofالْفَائِزِينَthe successful onesبِرَحْمَتِهِby His mercy.
and make you of the successful ones by His mercy.
ذَكَرْتَYou mentioned,حَفِظَكَmay Allah preserve you,اللَّهُAllahأَنَّكَthat youقَرَأْتَreadكِتَابِيmy bookفِيconcerningتَصْنِيفِthe classification ofحِيَلِthe tricks ofلُصُوصِthe thieves of
You mentioned, may Allah preserve you, that you read my book concerning the classification of the tricks of the thieves of
النَّهَارِ1daytime,وَفِيand concerningتَفْصِيلِthe detail ofحِيَلِthe tricks ofسُرَّاقِthe thieves ofاللَّيْلِthe night,
daytime, and concerning the detail of the tricks of the thieves of the night,
وَأَنَّكَand that youسَدَدْتَblockedبِهِwith itكُلَّeveryخَلَلٍ2flaw,
and that you blocked with it every flaw,
وَحَصَّنْتَ3and fortifiedبِهِwith itكُلَّeveryعَوْرَةٍ4vulnerability,
and fortified with it every vulnerability,
وَتَقَدَّمْتَand advancedبِمَاwith whatأَفَادَكَit benefited you ofمِنْofلَطَائِفِsubtleties ofالْخَدَعِdeceptions,
and advanced with what it benefited you of the subtleties of deceptions,
وَنَبَّهَكَand alerted youعَلَيْهِto itمِنْofغَرَائِبِrareالْحِيَلِtricks,
and alerted you to it of rare tricks,
فَمَاso whatعَسَىmightأَلَّاnotيَبْلُغَهُreach itكَيْدٌany plot,
so what plot might not reach it,
وَلَاand norيَجُوزَهُpass through itمَكْرٌany deception.
and nor pass through it any deception.
وَذَكَرْتَAnd you mentionedأَنَّthatقَدْرَthe extent ofنَفْعِهِits benefitعَظِيمٌis great,
And you mentioned that the extent of its benefit is great,
وَأَنَّand thatالتَّقَدُّمَproceedingفِيinدَرْسِهِstudying itوَاجِبٌis obligatory.
and that proceeding in studying it is obligatory.
وَقُلْتَAnd you said:
And you said:
أَذْكُرْMentionلِيto meنَوَادِرَthe anecdotes ofالْبُخَلَاءِthe misersفِيinبَابِthe chapter ofالْجِدِّseriousness,
Mention to me the anecdotes of the misers in the chapter of seriousness,
لِأَجْعَلَso that I may makeالْهَزْلَjokingمُسْتَرَاحًاa resting place,
so that I may make joking a resting place,
وَالرَّاحَةَand relaxationجُمَامًا5a refreshment,
and relaxation a refreshment,
فَإِنَّfor indeedلِلْجِدِّseriousness hasكَدًّاtoilيَمْنَعُthat preventsمِنْfromمُعَاوَدَتِهِreturning to it,
for indeed seriousness has toil that prevents from returning to it,
وَلَاand there is noبُدَّescapeلِمَنِfor whoeverالْتَمَسَsoughtنَفْعَهُits benefitمِنْfromمُرَاجَعَتِهِreviewing it.
and there is no escape for whoever sought its benefit from reviewing it.

Thieves of the day: They are the thieves who steal during the day and snatch.
- 2.الخلل: الفساد أو موضع الضعف.
Flaw: Corruption or the place of weakness.
- 3.حصّنت: حميت وحفظت.
Fortified: Protected and guarded.
- 4.عورة: موضع الخلل والضعف الذي يواجه الخطر.
Vulnerability: The place of flaw and weakness that faces danger.
- 5.الجمام: الراحة والنشاط بعد التعب.
Refreshment: Rest and vigor after fatigue.
